4 Rich Robbins Honored for Win Canisius coach Rich Robbins was named the Buffalo Bills/National Guard Coach of the Week after his Crusaders beat Aquinas 34-0 last weekend. Aquinas had entered the game ranked 48th in the USAToday High School rankings. I m very proud of our kids and our coaching staff, Robbins said. We were very well prepared for the game and anything we asked those kids to do they did. It was just a great job by our whole team. Aquinas had won the NYS Class AA championship in 2013 and many thought the Little Irish were even stronger this season. Over the last 10 years, Aquinas is the best program in the state, Robbins said. To be able to get a win at home in the way that we did is just tremendous. There was a huge crowd in attendance for a game that featured two of the most heavily recruited high school players in the nation. The bleachers were full on both sides, Robbins said. Our students were out in Buffalo Bills & NY National Guard Coach of the Week force. Aquinas travels well but I noticed a lot of other jackets and jerseys from other programs from around WNY. It was defenitely a game that a lot of people were interested to see. Canisius top recruit, tight end TJ Wheatley, had a solid day. He caught 2 passes for 32 yards and made 7 tackles on defense. But Aquinas top player didn t fare so well. Quarterback Jake Zembiec, one of the top five high school QBs in the nation, was injured on the game s first play from scrimmage. He was sacked on the Little Irish first snap and suffered a broken wrist. Our outside linebacker got a clean shot, Robbins said. It was a good clean hit and unfortunately it had 4 Photo by Buffalo Bills Canisius coach Rich Robbins was named the Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the National Guard after his Crusaders shut out Aquinas 34-0 last weekend. a bad result. Jake tried to go another two plays but you could see he was favoring it. He just couldn t go. Robbins said that his players were actually disappointed that Aquinas had lost its star player. Our kids wanted to compete against him, Robbins said. We wanted to compete with the top talent and Jake is one of the best quarterbacks there is. Mitch Thomas rushed for 150 yards on 10 carries for the Crusaders. He played wide receiver last year but we moved him to tailback, Robbins said. We knew he was a good running back. He was one of the best receivers we have had and he made the transition pretty easily. Canisius QB Jakob Loucks completed 10 of 19 passes for 96 yards and a TD in the win. He also rushed for 111 yards and a TD on just 8 carries. I think he was a bit overwhelmed last year, Robbins said. but he is a night-andday different player this year. He made quick decisions all day long. He s been playing really well. Michael Tarbutt set a new Canisius record when he kicked a 52-yard FG. The 52-yarder also ties a Msgr. Martin record and is the 8th longest FG in the NYS. It s nice to have a weapon at kicker like that, Robbins said. He is a Division I-A prospect and I will continue to give him chances to kick like that. Robbins played high school football in Pittsburgh at North Allegany High School, where he was named an all-state player at defensive tackle. He played college football at Alfred University under Jim Moretti and was an All-Conference DT. He now teaches Economics and is the Assistant Athletic Director in addition to coaching football at Canisius.

5 Ron Schul Leads Orchard Park Defense Orchard Park took a lead after a wild first quarter and beat Kenmore West last weekend. We came out very strong, Orchard Park coach Gene Tundo said. We threw the ball well and we ran well. They were in a different defense than we expected. They committed to stopping the run but we were able to pass to counteract against that. Kenmore West scored with :01 left in the first quarter to pull within but Terius Wheatley returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a TD to give the Quakers a 9-point lead. This is a good group of guys that compete with each other, Tundo said. Our second-line players are as good as the first string players. There is a healthy competition between our kids because they all want to play. At every position our starter has guy behind them that could play. The Quakers Photo by Dan Nesselbush Orchard Park junior Ron Schul. defense has been outstanding this season. If the Quakers are going to make it back to Ralph Wilson Stadium for the Class AA title game, they will need a big year from junior linebacker Ron Schul. He started as a sophomore on the lacrosse team and he was as good as anybody who played against him, Tundo said. In the state championship game, he won the majority of the faceoffs. We lost the game but if it wasn t for Ron, we wouldn t have even been in the game. Schul is among the Quakers leading tacklers. He made 11 tackles in the win over Kenmore West and also recorded a pair of QB sacks. He s quick, Tundo said. He has good strength and great intuition. Sometimes he gets to where the ball is going before the ball gets there. Schul has an academic average in the high 80s and will probably play college lacrosse. He s a winner, Tundo said. He goes full speed right from the beginning of practice until the end of the game. He goes all out every day. For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 7 This Girl s Got Game By Mark Adair Catt-LV beat Panama last weekend to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Timberwolves beat Westfield in the season-opener. You always want a positive start to the season, Cattaraugus-LV coach Tim Miller said. You also don t want to think you are that good yet. We have a lot of work left to do but starting 2-0 gives us some confidence going forward. Miller says that his team will face the hardest part of the schedule in the next few weeks. The schedule only gets tougher from here, he said. We will hit some hurdles along the way. We have Randolph this week and that s a pretty big hurdle. Miller says he team is prepared to face the defending two-time NYS Class D champs. Our kids know what s in front of them, he said. We need to have a really solid, focused week. We need some great preparation because we have an outstanding football program coming into our place. In the win over Panama, the Timberwolves fell behind early for the second straight week. We were moving the ball well but, once again, we had some early-game issues, Miller said. We had some penalties and turnovers that stopped our drives. We got it going in the second quarter. Cattaraugus-LV took an 8-7 lead in the second quarter but allowed a TD with 1:00 to play in the half and Panama led We were able to put on a pretty quick drive and we scored again to tie it up, Miller said. We had a little momentum going into the half. After that, we tightened things down defensively. Cattaraugus-LV has a big advantage this season against other Class D teams. The Timberwolves have a kicker who has come to the team from the soccer program. It s a luxury when a class D coach has a kid that we can send on the field and put it through the uprights, Miller said. Down in Class D, good kickers are hard to find sometimes. Miller s kicker has already won a game this season when she... yes, she... kicked a PAT with less than a minute to play in the 1-point win over Westfield. Jenna Martin, a senior soccer player at Cattaraugus-LV, decided last spring that she wanted to play football. Cattaraugus-Little Valley senior Jenna Martin plays soccer for the Timberwolves. She decided that she also wanted to kick for the football team this fall. 7 When she signed up, I groaned, Miller admitted. I don t have anything against girls playing football. It s just the little headaches that come with it. We have to have separate arrangements for the locker room for practice and the games. For road games, we have to make sure there is a place she can get dressed by herself. Just the tiny little headaches that no coach wants to deal with. But, Miller said, he accepted Martin as just another player. We ve done it before, he said, so we could deal with again. Martin attended two-a-day practice sessions in both football and soccer during the August pre-season in order to be eligible for both sports. She just wanted to kick because she thought she could contribute, Miller said. When we practiced the special teams and the PAT kicks, was very good at it. She was absolutely the best we had and I don t know a coach out there that will not take the best. Miller says that any soccer player that wants to kick for him is welcome... girl or boy. Those kids are skilled with their feet and know how to kick, Miller said. Soccer players are probably an underused resource at a lot of football Photo by Heather O Donnell schools. I ve had two boys come over from the soccer team to kick and punt for us. Miller says he had been resigned to just simply not kicking this season. We had no football player could kick a PAT this year, he said, and Jenna just sort of dropped in our lap. Turns out it was pretty fortunate for us. Martin was 3-for-4 in the win over Westfield. And those little headaches that Miller was worried about? They seem a lot less significant when she is kicking like she is, he said. I know that if we get a good snap and hold, we ll get a point. Against Westfield, we got one more point than they did. Martin is an outstanding student. She is in the top 10 of her class academically and a member of the National Honor society. In addition to soccer and football, she also plays basketball. She s everywhere, Miller said. If our kids are doing something positive, you can bet that she s involved. In all, Martin has become an integral part of the team. The boys have been great with her, he said. She is a teammate and they ve accepted her. She made it easy for them to accept her. They want to win and she can help us do that.

The improbable win improved the Wolverines to 2-0 on the season. This team is very young, coach Don bass said. We start 7 juniors and sophomores. They are hardworking young men who want to get better and they don t ever give up. With just :33 left in the game, Cheektowaga led and had the ball. The Falls had just used their final time out. We told the kids to hold and strip, Bass said. We practice the strip drill on a daily basis and this is exactly why. Cheektowaga called a running play, hoping to get the first down and clinch the win. Instead, The Wolverines Joe Medley stripped the ball and ran 82 yards down the sidelines for the game-tying TD. Jeff Menyah kicked the PAT to give Niagara falls the win. That kick would have been good from 40 yards out, Bass said. This is the Wolverines first 2-0 start in several years. We ve been getting a lot of positive feedback from our students and teachers at the school, Bass said. It s been wonderful. If Niagara Falls is going to contend for the AA North title, they will need a big year from Shaolin McCray. He rushed for over 100 yards both games, Bass said. He had 141 yards against Cheektowaga and he also backs up on defense. McCray (5-11, Photo by Mark Adair Niagara Falls senior Shaolin McCray #2. 175) can bench press nearly 300 pounds. He s a very strong kid, Bass said. He s also fast. You are not going to run him down. McCray was named a team captain and has an academic average in the 90s. He was one of the hardest workers in the weight room, Bass said. He s a quiet leader and the kids respect him. GIVE YOUR CHILD MEMORIES THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME

McDuffie said that, despite the scores, his team has not played poorly. We are shooting ourselves in the foot with a fumble or a holding penalty, he said. Those are things that we can control and we need to correct. We talk about alignment, assignment and effort. You have a better chance to win if you can control those three things. The week following the loss, Marshall sensed that his players had a renewed purpose. I thought we had a focused, physical football team, he said. I had a good feeling about where the kids were mentally going into the Hutch Tech game. Kyle learned a lot of lessons on the fly, Marshall said, but those lessons are paying dividends now. He is a completely different player this year. Seifert (6-2, 205) put in a ton of work in the off-season to make himself better. He went to every clinic or camp possible, Marshall said. McPhail leading JFK JFK fell behind 28-0 at the half and lost to Class B Tonawanda 35-6 last weekend. The Bears were heavily out-sized in the contest. They have size and speed, JFK coach Mark Ostempowski said. We stressed it all week but I don t think we were quite ready for it. They were just bigger and had more speed than we did. Ostempowski says that he was pleased with his team as they have started 1-1 this fall. We played a great game against Akron, he said, and we lost to a team from a bigger class. It s a nonleague loss so it doesn t affect the playoffs at all. We re 1-0 in league games and that s what matters. Last season the Bears struggled as a lineup loaded with sophomores and freshman learned the varsity game. We ve matured, Ostempowski said. You can tell that we have kids with some experience but we are still a young team. We only graduated a few seniors from last year. Our juniors have stepped up and taken the leadership role. One of the few seniors on this season s team is SE Shawn McPhail, who is also starting at LB. McPhail (5-11, 160) is one of the Bears leading tacklers. He s not huge but he has pretty good speed, Ostempowski said. He was mostly at running back last year but toward the end of the year we moved him out to receiver. McPhail started the 2013 season at CB. Photo by Tim Frank JFK senior Shawn McPhail. He was moved around on defense too, Ostempowski said. He s pretty aggressive at linebacker. They are picked to go to the states but you can t let that stuff dictate a game before you get on the field. Gabel said he was pleased his players effort. Our kids played hard and they didn t quit, he said. We re over it and we are looking forward now. Gabel also said that it has taken time to get some cohesion in a lineup that underwent a drastic change before the season began. We got some Pine Valley kids when their program folded, Gabel said. But they didn t have enough practices so they were a week behind. They couldn t scrimmage and it took a while to get them into the lineup. We are getting our feet under us. Gabel said that the merger has gone well thus far. The kids have been great with each other, he said, but it takes a little more time to get the timing of the offense down. If the Panthers are going to bounce back from the 0-2 start, they will need TB Jon McCarthy. He starts at tailback, Gabel said, but he also plays flanker, linebacker and cornerback. The Panthers are now 1-1, in what will be the final Panama football season. This is it, Payne said. We will merge with the Sherman-Clymer team for the 2015 season. Payne says that the smaller numbers affecting every small school in WNY is now hitting Panama. We have 12 juniors and 12 seniors on the team, Payne said. We have only 6 sophomores in the entire program and none of the freshman are ready for varsity football yet. Our JVs are already merged with Sherman and Clymer. Payne says he was tempted to join the Sherman-Clymer merger this season. But we weren t ready yet, Payne said. We had 24 seniors and juniors coming back and we all wanted one more goaround as Panama. 21 CTF s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches and athletes to be men of character for others. The 2014 season is in high gear. What a great first week. Cross Training Football is honored to be walking through the season with you. We want to encourage, equip and empower you to be an Athlete of Character. Teddy Roosevelt said, Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike. I believe this to be true for any team as well. This year s Theme is: BE RELENTLESS. The first two weeks we have talked about BELIEVE. All things are possible for those who believe. If you believe something is true then you need to take action. Just Believe and go for it. The Heart of a Champion Character Playbook theme is Be Relentless! The second word we talked about was ENVISION. We defined envision as a clear, powerful picture worth pursuing. What is your vision for the team? Write it down make it plain even for others. Then run with it, work it out. This week s word is RESPONSIBLE: Commitment even if it requires unexpected sacrifice. If you can be trusted with a little, you can then be trusted with much. If you are dishonest a little, you will be dishonest with much. Athletes... Know what s right and do what s right, even if it means sacrifice. Athletes who are RESPONSIBLE can and will be trusted. 22 CoverStory NT s Great Eight By Mark Adair Chris Woodard leads Lumberjacks against Sweet Home North Tonawanda beat Williamsville East last week as the Lumberjacks started the season 2-0. The Jacks opened the season with a 28-0 win over Riverside, the first shutout NT has earned in three years. We re excited, NT coach Tony Truilizio said. we ve played pretty well but I still don t know how good we are. Truilizio said that the Lumberjacks will come into sharper focus following this weekends matchup with Sweet Home. The big bench mark will be Sweet Home, he said. They are always the team to beat. We ll see how we do against Sweet Home. Truilizio says that he feels better about this season than any of the three years he has coached at NT. We worked very hard all off season, he said, more so than in any other year. These guys definitely put in the time. Sweet Home - a team that has won 7 of the last 8 Class A titles - will provide a stern test for North Tonawanda. The Panthers are coming off a win over Kenmore East last week. I m looking forward to playing them, Truilizio said. They are the team to beat year in and year out. The Lumberjacks two wins have been fashioned by good old-fashioned, hard-hitting defense. We re playing good defense right now, Truilizio said. Those kids are doing a great job. We ve given up 14 points in 2 games. Riverside has tremendous athletes. We shut them out and had 6 sacks. Williamsville East may not have won yet but their offense is pretty powerful. We had 5 turnovers and 4 passes defended so the Photo by Mark Adair North Tonawanda QB Chris Woodard ran for 208 yards and 3 TDs in the Lumberjacks win over Williamsville East last week. The senior also passed for another 3 TDs. 22 defense is doing it s job. Truilizio says that the improvement of the defense over last year is a big reason for all the excitement in North Tonawanda right now. Our offense has always been high-paced and scored a lot of points, he said, but the defense has really improved. If we can continue to get the full combination of offense and defense, we ll be in good shape. The Lumberjacks also have one of the biggest weapons in Western New York in quarterback Chris Woodard. Chris is the real deal, Truilizio said. We ve been saying it for the last couple of years. He does so many different things really well. Woodard ran all over Williamsville East last week. The senior rushed for 208 yards and 3 TDs on just 9 carries. His TD runs covered 24, 63 and 75 yards. He s deceptively fast, Truilizio said. He has long strides. It doesn t look like he s moving fast but if he gets to the edge very few people can catch him. His speed and the sheer power he has is pretty special. I haven t seen anything like it since I played college football at Canisius. Woodard also completed 7 of 9 passes for 79 yards and another 3 TDs in the win. If he continues the pace he s on, Truilizio said, he ll be up for the Connolly Cup at the end of the year. Woodard is a dual threat at QB. In 2013, he rushed for 888 yards and 11 TDs. He also passed for 1,533 yards and 9 TDs. Additionally, he was named a first-team punter for the See Cover Story on page 23

23 CoverStory continued from page 22 All-Football Weekly team. Chris is getting a lot of looks from Division I-AA schools right now, Truilizio said. There is nothing wrong with that but I think he could play at a higher level. I think that teams like Syracuse and UB should be looking at him a little closer. Woodard, at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, has the size to play Division I football. He s not thin at all, Truilizio said. He is all muscle. He runs with a lot of power. He s not afraid to take a hit and he ll definitely give a hit. Where ever they play him at the next level, he will be a huge asset. Woodard is an outstanding student and maintains an academic average of 98. All the Ivy League schools are looking at him, Truilizio said. Every one of them. Woodard has already received a scholarship offer from Central Connecticut State but says he is trying not to think about college too much. I m trying to keep all the college scholarships in the back on my mind right now, he said. I don t want to think about that and mess up my game. Academics will take me farther anyway. He wants to major in Exercise Science or Physical Therapy. I definitely want to be involved in sports, he said. I would love to be a trainer for a college team some day. Woodard says he is so focused on getting to the Ralph Wilson Stadium this season that he hasn t thought much about the future. I think we are going in the right direction, he said. We knew we could have a good year if we worked really hard in the off-season. Woodard has played football with six of his teammates since they were small children. Woodard, Alex Molik (OL), Taylor Mellott (LB), Ryan McDonough (LB), Ryan Gilbert (CB) and Drew Krantz (CB) were teammates on the Little League team in North Tonawanda. We ve been teammates since forever, Woodard said. We d always go to the games on Friday nights and cheer on the Jacks. I thought those kids on the high school team were huge back then. North Tonawanda went to The Ralph five straight years and won the NYS title when Woodard was growing up. I thought those guys were the greatest players ever, he said. It s awesome when I look and see the little kids at our games now. I know just what they are thinking when they watch us play. It s so important to handle ourselves with class at all times. We don t want to show them something bad. Woodard knows that the season s biggest game is this weekend. Sweet Home was 9-1 last year and they have a lot of kids back, he said. We saw them at the Buff State camp. It will be a great game. I think it will be close and hopefully we can come out on top. 23 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! 54 By Mark Adair Utica College has started the season 2-0 with a 55-0 win over Misericordia and a win at Union. The defense has, thus far, been outstanding. The Pioneers are allowing an average of 8 points per game and have allowed a total of 174 yards of offense. In back-to-back games we have scored defensive touchdowns, head coach Blaise Faggiano said. Our kids have played really well. They have a shutout and two defensive touchdowns and you really can t ask for a whole lot more. In the win over Misericordia, James Lenehan returned an interception 30 yards for a TD. In the win over Union, cornerback Irvens Eristil returned a fumble 17 yards for the game-winning touchdown and sealed the win with an interception. Eristil was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Utica actually trailed 16-0 at the half against Union. The defense kept us in the game and got us started, Faggiano said. We recovered two fumbles that led to scores and turned things our way. The Utica defense is led by Defensive Coordinator Will Pluff, a graduate of Kenmore West. Coach Pluff actually helps me with special teams, too, Faggiano said. And, we had a 74-yard return for a TD. So, I would say that Coach Pluff is doing pretty well. Pluff played high school football at Ken West under Rich Harris. He graduated in Utica was in the second year as a program, Pluff said. I ve been here for every year of Utica football except the 2000, 2001 and 2006 seasons. Pluff was a captain on the 2005 Utica team, the first to finish the season with a winning record. When I graduated from Utica, I moved back home to Buffalo, Pluff said. Mainly, because I had no idea what I wanted to do. I got a full-time job at Baker Victory Services, College Football Ken West Grad Leads Utica D working in a group home for Developmentally Disabled Adults. After one year away from football, Pluff got a call from his old college coach, Mike Kemp. Coach Kemp asked me to come back as a grad assistant and coach the LBs, Pluff said. I jumped at the chance. However... During my first year of coaching, Coach Kemp got fired in the middle of the season. Pluff said. Pluff said that he was crushed when Kemo was fired. That hurt, he said. I was 22 years old and the guy who I played for and who hired me for my first job was out. I was shocked. I had not even coached an entire season yet. It was a very emotional week. Pluff prepared to look for work again. I m thinking that I m going be out and have to move back to Buffalo again. However, Faggiano Photo by Utica College Will Pluff is the Defensive Coordinator at Utica College. 54 interviewd Pluff for a job on the staff and was impressed. I saw his passion for Utica College football, Faggiano said. He had a lot of pride in his program and wanted to stay and be a part of it. I just knew it was important to keep him on staff. Pluff gets back to his hometown often as he handles all recruiting duties in Western New York. We had a great recruiting class this year, Faggiano said. In fact, every student-athlete we have had from Buffalo has been a very good football player. Pluff, who is still just 30 years old, has spent more than 12 years with the Utica football program. I m the last guy from Blaise s original staff that s still here, Pluff said. I played for four years, I was a grad assistant for 4 years and now I am in my 4th year as defensive coordinator. I m in a great position. Pluff says that he is still at Utica for the same reason that he came to the college as a freshman football player. We ve worked really hard to get the program to where we are now, he said. I want to be really successful here, which is exactly what I came here to do back in 2002.

Hobart opened the fall campaign with a win over traditional rival Dickinson College. We ve won that game 9 out of the last 10 years, Hobart coach Mike Cragg said. They have been a traditional rival for 25 or 30 years but they are dropping us in a couple of years. Cragg is pleased with the start for the Statesmen. I m very happy that we re 2-0, he said. Our back-ups have been able to get playing time and experience. We have played pretty good football. The Statesmen are averaging 30 points per game. We have moved the ball well, Cragg said. Endicott made the NCAA playoffs last year so that was a good test for us. Hobart will go back to the Boston, Massachusetts area to play Curry College this weekend before hosting Kings College (Pa.) for Homecoming. If we play our game, we ll be okay, he said. We needed to improve the pass defense and we ve done that. We just try to keep focused on the next game and not look at the big picture. College Football Brandon Ball Helps Hobart Brandon Ball Hobart has finished the last two regular seasons undefeated. The Statesmen have won the Liberty League both years and have made the NCAA playoffs. Cragg is also delving deeper into the Western New York recruiting waters. Section 6 is an important area for us, he said. There s an awful lot of good football players in Buffalo. One recruit who is playing well is DE Brandon Ball, a 2014 Springville grad. Brandon is playing defensive end for us and he s rotating in right now, Cragg said. We use him a lot on passing downs because he has a high motor and good football instincts. Ball is also able to get varsity playing time while learning the position from 1stteam All-American DE Tyre Coleman. We bring in about 30 freshman each year, Cragg said. It s really difficult for a freshman to get any playing time. But, the jump to college football hasn t been too much for Brandon. Cragg says that Ball is improving and earning more playing time each week. The thing that stands out is his strength, Cragg said. He s very strong and has a nice job against the run. He is a very hard working individual. And he gets better every day on practice. Ball is not making much noise, but he is opening some eyes. He s a quiet individual, Cragg said, but football and Hobart are very important to him. I am very pleased with him. 59 Otto Weighs in Again THE EXTRA P O I N T By Mark Adair I saw Otto Slamkowski the other day. He had a scowl and was chomping on his ever-present cigar. Hey, Otto. How ya doin? He gave a resigned sigh and shook his head. What s the matter, now? I asked. Oh, my wife got a computer a few weeks ago, he said. I joined this thing called Facebook... big waste of time. Well, I answered, If that s the case, why did you join? I m trying to keep up with the Western New York football scene and if you wanna do that nowadays, you have to have a computer and use that internet thing, he said. I asked him what he was seeing on Facebook. Everyone s all up in arms, he said, because teams are scoring 60 and 70 points in some of the games. People are ranting about the game without mentioning the teams involved... like they don t want to embarass anyone. Well, I said. A lot of people don t like it when a teams pound on an opponent like that. They kind of took advantage of a weaker team. Oh, Otto said, wrinkling his forehead. But, isn t that what football teams are supposed to do? Find a weakness in your opponent and take advantage of it? Well... I started. So, if your opponent has a weakness, you re supposed to try not to score? Maybe the coach could tell his running backs to fall down as soon as they get the ball. That might make it easier on the other team. I don t think you understand the spirit of high school football, I said. You are supposed to use good sportsmanship and not humiliate the other guy. Who said anything about humiliating? Otto asked. What s humiliating about getting beat as long as you did your best and played your hardest right to the end? I guess I see your point, I conceded. But some people are saying that those teams should have stopped scoring because the game was out of hand. Out of hand? Otto asked. Check the New York State record book, pal. In the old days, there were a lot of games that ended I mean, quite a few teams have won games 48-0 this year. Should we punish them for that? Jamestown has scored 68 points the other night. We make rules so that successful people are as mediocre as everyone else. 59 Should they get a letter of reprimand? And why should the losing teams be embarrassed? They fought hard to the very end. They have nothing to be ashamed of. I guess... I started. Besides, Frontier just got caught on a bad night, Otto said. What about those other programs? What other programs? I asked. There are a few football programs out there that haven t won more than two games in a season since McKinley was shot in Buffalo, Otto said with disgust. Their community does not take the sport seriously and all the opposing coaches protect these programs by not scoring on them. For years, these same teams lose 45-0 each and every week. Why not truly roll it up on them and let everyone know how bad they really are? That wouldn t be very nice, I said. So what? Otto laughed. Football isn t nice. It s a competition. The idea behind a competition is to do your very best. After it s over, shake hands, share some mutual respect and leave the field together as fellow warriors. By beating them 121-0? I asked. Sure, he said, Then these kids might understand how much work they have to do to get better. You see, the really good programs don t just get lucky. Those coaches and their players work their butts off to get good. They work all winter, spring and summer to get ready for the season. They do a ton of fund-raising so they can attend camps and coaching clinics. Their community and their school district makes sure they have all the equipment they need to get bigger, stronger and faster. But... I started. Unfortunately, not everybody wants to work hard, Otto said. Some kids sit around all summer watching cartoons. Did they run the bleachers? Did they lift weights every day? Maybe if they got beat every single week, they would understand exactly how much work and effort it takes to be good at football. But we re trying to do more than just coach football, I said. We re trying to teach life s lessons to these kids. By not making them feel bad, Otto said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Let me tell you, teaching kids that life will take it easy on you when you don t work hard is exactly the WRONG kind of lesson we should be teaching. Um... I said. Wow... maybe you have a point. Of course I have a point, he said, but it ll never happen. Everyone would rather complain about the successful programs than try to be more like them. We make rules so that strong and successful people are as mediocre as everyone else. That way, nobody gets their feelings hurt. It s the American way.

60 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
