4 Buffalo Bills & ADPRO Sports Coach of the Week Nagel Honored for Newfane Win Newfane coach Chuck Nagel was named the Buffalo Bills/ADPRO Sports Coach of the Week after his Panthers beat Lew-Port last week. The game was only the second night game at Newfane. The Newfane Sports Boosters rented lights and moved the kickoff from 2pm to 7 pm Saturday night. A lot of people have to agree for this to happen, Nagel said. The head of officials has to agree to do this. The other school has to agree to do it. We really appreciate Lew-Port agreeing to do this. The crowd was estimated at 1,700, the biggest crowd in Newfane history. There was a lot of people there, Nagel said. We had the whole Newfane Little. League there. Two years ago, we had a night game and 1,500 people were there. The excitement of the evening has spurred talk in the town of putting in permanent lights and playing night football. I m a Newfane guy, born and raised, Nagel said. I played football for Newfane. Yeah, I would love lights here. I think it would be a big thing in Newfane. Nagel says that Friday or Saturday night football would be a huge attraction in the small town. There s not much going on in Newfane, he said. It s a safe town. There s not much crime. It s a great place to raise kids. We have a couple of great restaurants but the school is the center of the whole town. Having night football would be a great thing for our community. Newfane s 30-point margin of victory was the biggest win in over a decade. We took a tough loss against a very tough Lackawanna team in Week 1, Nagel said. We really focused on being ready for Lew-Port on Saturday. We focused on coaching the kids. We worked on our pass protection. We worked on special teams. By Saturday night, these kids were really ready to play. They believed in themselves and it showed in a big way with all those people here. The played a complete game on both sides of the ball. The crowd roared early in the game when Chad Dunbar took the ball on a reverse and sped down the sidelines for 60 yards. He was knocked out on the Lew-Port 5-yard line. It was just great execution on the part of our offensive 4 line, our quarterback and our tailback. Lew-Port rushed inside and Chad took off outside down the field. One play later, Dunbar scored on an 8-yard TD run on the same play. Newfane led 13-0 after one quarter and 21-6 early in the 2nd frame. We were rolling, Nagel said. I was hoping our defense could stay tough and keep doing the job. Our offense needed to keep moving the chains. In the loss to Lackawanna, moving the chains wasn t a problem for the Panthers. We moved the ball against Lackawanna, Nagel said, but we lost the ball on downs inside the 5 and we lost a fumble inside the 10. Against Lew-Port we were able to finish the drives. Late in the first half, holding a lead, Brandon Gross hit Drew Boudeman with a 26- yard TD. Newfane took a lead into the locker room. That was a huge play, Nagel said. Brandon is a 3- year starter. If he s in distress or getting chased, he can get out of it and make it a positive play. The celebration in the locker room was intense. Photo by Mark Adair Newfane coach Chuck Nagel was named the Buffalo Bills ADPRO Sports Coach of the Week after leading his Panthers to a win over Lew-Port. After 2 minutes we told the kids that the game wasn t over, Nagel said. We needed to keep the pedal down. Newfane scored 3 more TDs and led Every single kid played, which is awesome, Nagel said. Everybody had a big game. Gross finished the night by completing 10 of 21 passes for 184 yards and 2 TDs. He also rushed for 130 yards and 2 TDs on 13 carries. Julian Nixon ran 16 times for 156 yards. Dunbar ran for 68 yards and 2 TDs on 4 carries. Shayne Harrington caught a screen pass and went 45 yards for a TD. Nagel played WR and DB at Newfane, graduating in In the fall of 1993, his senior season, Newfane finished undefeated in the regular season but lost a playoff game to Salamanca. I know we can win here, he said. We used to win all the time. Now we have kids who are putting the work in and it shows. Nagel and his wife Kristina have a daughter (Melanie, 14) and a son (CJ, 11).

8 Legacy Burns Bright for Flames By Mark Adair Williamsville East fought hard but lost to crosstown rival Williamsville North last week. The Flames, who were heavy underdogs entering the game, pulled within early in the 3rd quarter. That s two weeks in a row we have battled hard but lost, coach Mike Torrillo said. We have to find a way to be able to play for 4 quarters. In a Week 1 loss to Starpoint, the Flames trailed 7-0 late in the third quarter. Starpoint scored on the last play of the 3rd quarter, Torrillo said, and they scored 21 points in the 4th quarter. Torrillo says that, despite the 0-2 start, his team has played better than the final scores have shown. We are doing a lot of good things, he said, but we still have things we need to get better at. When the 2017 schedule came out, Torrillo knew that the Flames were given a brutal gauntlet during the first half. With games against Starpoint, Williamsville North, Williamsville South and Sweet Home, the Flames faced heavy competition. The kids are giving me everything they have, Torrillo said. I can t ask for anything more than that. The Flames have also had to contend with school construction. While their new football stadium will be envied by many other programs in WNY, it isn t quite finished yet. We did not practice once on our own field until this week, Torrillo said. It s gorgeous but there is still construction everywhere. The field is ready to go but there are still fences to be put up. They did a nice job with it. It s going to be gorgeous. The players have had to board a bus and rode over to the middle school for practice every day. It s been a long four weeks, Torrillo said. We ve definitely had some obstacles to overcome. We are just trying to focus on football and the other stuff will fall into place. One final obstacle happened just before the start of the Williamsville East senior Joey Shifflet is the grandson of legendary Sweet Home coach Joe Shifflet. 6 training camp. Defensive coordinator Chris Heim was injured in a weight lifting accident at the school. He s still out of school, Torrillo said, so we are down a coach. I have to give a lot of credit to my other coaches. All the assistants have worked really hard. If Williamsville East is going to survive the first four weeks and contend for a Class A playoff spot, they will need a big season from senior Joey Shifflet. He was named a team captain last fall before I was hired, Torrillo said, but I am very comfortable with him being our leader. Shifflet (5-11, 185) was moved from CB to S over the winter. He has been key for us this year, Torrillo said. If we make a mistake, he s there to cover for us. The senior has become a big hitter in the defensive secondary. He works extremely hard in the weight room, Torrillo said. He works hard at everything he needs to do with his game. Torrillo said that Shifflet s is reacts quickly to plays happening in front of him. His knowledge of the game is incredible, Torrillo Photo by Mark Adair said. You don t have to tell him anything more than once. He knows the game. He was brought up in football. I m sure he talked about football at home all the time. It s not surprising that Shifflet has an incredible knowledge of how to play the game. Football is in his DNA and his family tree. Joey s grandfather is Joe Shifflet, the legendary Sweet Home coach who finally retired in 2009 with 200 career victories. I played for Coach Shifflet at Sweet Home, Torrillo said. He has been a mentor to me for years. He has an wealth of knowledge and I ve always welcomed his advice. Torrillo says that the elder Shifflet, who actually earned his 200th career win while coaching at Williamsville East, has transitioned smoothly from the sidelines to the stands. He s a coach, Torrillo said. He ll always be a coach. But he s a grandpa, too and he supports his grandkids.

The Red Devils evened their record at 1-1 with the win. After we lost to South, we watched film the next day, Clarence coach Paul Burgio said, and 12 kids came with me to scout Niagara Falls. The kids were committed to bouncing back. The Devils led 6-0 at the half and took control after the break. We had previous experience playing the Falls, Burgio said. We knew they were a Spread football team. We know what they typically like to run. The Devils will travel to Jamestown this week for a key AA league contest. After winning just one game in 2016, Jamestown is 2-0. Jamestown is an improved team over last year, Burgio said. Wins don t come easy and beating Jamestown won t be easy either. If Clarence is going to contend for the AA title this season, they will need a big year from junior WR John Stevens. He s sneaky fast, Burgio said. He runs a 4.7 in the 40- yard dash and he runs great routes. Stevens (5-9, 165) also starts at CB for Clarence. He s not our biggest kid, Burgio said, but he s the strongest kid on the team. In the win over Wilson, the Golden Eagles led 8-0 after one quarter. Wilson has 10 of 11 starters back but we were able to get up on them early. Graham said. We were abe to get after them, Graham said. The kids played well. QB Brett Kochanski completed 6 of 10 passes for 137 yards and a TD. He s not as big a running threat as we have had in the past but he can run the football, Graham said. He also gives us a nice balance with the skill set he has. Kochanski completed 10 of 14 passes against Maryvale. That was his first varsity start, Graham said, and Photo by Mark Adair he was even more comfortable against Wilson. Kochanski, who has an academic average in the 90s, has already been offered a scholarship to play baseball at St. Bonaventure after high school. He s a pretty focused kid, Graham said. 23 CoverStory By Mark Adair A Brother s Love Mike King is inspired this season by the memory of his brother Iroquois improved to 2-0 on the season with win over Hamburg last week. Everything is going according to plan, coach Rob Pitzonka sid. We put a lot of work in during the off-season. We preached all off-season that the stronger we were and the better condition we were in, we would have the stamina for the second half. Pitzonka, in his first season as a head coach, says stamina is crucial for the Chiefs this fall. We are running an up-tempo offense, he said. We want to average about 13 seconds in between plays. Right now, because of the work they put in, our guys are built for that. Pitzonka says that he changed the Iroquois offense out of necessity. With HS football you have to gear your gameplan to the kids, he said. We lost some big, powerful players to graduation. We are a smaller team this season. We have one kid that is 250 pounds or more. The lack of size meant a change in tactics. We have guys who are strong, Pitzonka said, but we don t have a lot of height and weight. We needed to be in shape and in condition. The players embraced the program. We had 120 workout sessions over the off-season, Pitzonka said, and a lot of kids made almost every session. They put in the effort. The extra effort seems to be paying dividends in the early season. Iroquois trailed West Seneca East late in the 3rd quarter and rallied for a win. Against Hamburg, Iroquois led 21-7 at the half and Iroquois senior Mike King is playing football this season. His older brother Anthony was killed last fall in an accidental shooting. 21 Photo by Mark Adair stretched the lead to 30-7 in the 4th quarter. The Chiefs are also playing with emotion, especially senior WR Mike King. Mike is Mister Do- Everything, Pitzonka said. He has been all over the field. In the win over West Seneca East, King caught 7 passes for 88 yards. He also returned a fumble 60 yards for a TD, blocked a PAT, and sealed the game with an interception with :11 left in the game. He has always had a knack for making big, drama-filled plays right when we need it the most, Pitzonka said. Mike King is playing inspired football this season, despite dealing with a profound family tragedy. On November 6th, 2016, Mikes older brother Anthony was killed in an accidental shooting. We had just wrapped up the season, Pitzonka said. A couple of weeks after our last game, I got a phone call at 1 am. Pitzonka looked at his phone and saw the name of Jared Gasz - one of his players. When one of your players is calling at that time of night, it s never good, Pitzonka said. Gasz gave Pitzonka devastating news. Anthony King had been killed a few hours earlier. One of his friends was handling a gun and it accidentally went off, Pitzonka said. Anthony King, 19 at the time and a student at the University at Buffalo, died at the hospital. See Cover Story on page 22

24 CoverStory continued from page 21 Anthony s friend, Jake Klocek, who is now 20, was arrested and will be sentenced Sept. 28. He faces anywhere from probation to 15 years in prison. It was not a good time in our school, Pitzonka said. It shocked the entire community. Pitzonka says he had trouble figuring out how to handle the situation with his players. Kids look to teachers, coaches and grown-ups on how to handle those situations, he said. But something like this, especially when it s one of your player s, affects us pretty deep, too. Pitzonka says that he also had to try to help Anthony s younger brother Mike, who was still in his program. Mike is a phenomenal kid, Pitzonka said. He works very hard in the classroom. I had the opportunity to coach him last year in football and last spring in lacrosse. He is just a great teammate. King says that he went into a very dark place when his brother died. We were very close, Mike said. We we re like the same person. We always had everything in common and we always had each others back. We hardly ever fought. Mike also said that. The first couple of months I couldn t focus in school, he said. It still doesn t seem like it can be true. Once we started the off-season work, it was 5 days a week and it kind of took my mind off it. The players on the team, which was already close, really pulled tighter after tragedy. We are a very close team and that helped a lot, Mike said. Everybody in the community was there for us. Pitzonka actually got a custom-made 17-yard marker made to honor Anthony King, who wore #17. A lot of our kids were friends with Anthony, he said. I wanted something that we could gather around on the field and channel our thoughts. I thought it would be a cool idea to have our kids huddle around a 17-yard marker. However, finding one, was not easy. I had to make a ton of phone calls, Pitzonka said. Most people buy a set of 10s through the 50. Nobody makes a 17-yard marker. I finally got a hold of the Champro company. They heard the idea and ran with it. They made it, shipped it out to us before the first game and they didn t even charge us. The grounds crew also painted an Iroquois helmet on the field with the number 17 on it. Before the game, the players gathered around the yard marker and a moment of silence was observed. Early in the first quarter of Iroquois win over Hamburg, the Chief s took possession on the 50 after a punt. The ball sat on the #17 that commemorates Anthony King. On the snap, Mike suddenly found himself wide open. He caught a pass over the middle and sped 50 yards for a TD. No one came close to bringing him down. That was really cool, Mike said. That made the game even more special for me. I know Anthony was with me. 22 Roger Weiss Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!! Tony Caligiuri (716) Frank Wolf

Despite being heavily favored, the Spartans led just in the 3rd quarter. East came to play, North coach Mike Mammoliti said. : In the first half, East played like it was a rivalry game and we didn t. Mammoliti says he tried to warn his players that the Flames would not be intimidated by the Spartans. They didn t heed my warning, Mammoliti said. East came to play and they played hard. At the half, we had to have a little re-focusing. Mammoliti says he re-focused his players in loud, emphatic voice. You could say that, he said. The kids woke up. I think it showed in the way they played in the second half. The Spartans are 2-0 and are fueling excitement about their playoff chances. This is a really talented group, Mammoliti said. There are as many good athletes in this group that we have had in a very long time. No less than 15 kids have joined the varsity after a year on the JV team. That group of kids has not lost at the modified or the JV level, Mammoliti said. They are now The athleticism is matched with size. They are extremely talented athletes, Mammoliti said. The top 6 players on the JV basketball team are also football players. They are all over 6-feet tall. They are just big, athletic kids. However, Mammoliti says, despite the talent, immaturity has also shown through the first two games. They are so used to being better than other teams, he said, the last 2 weeks we started slow because they relied on that. Well, that doesn t work on the varsity. Varsity football is different. You can be talented but every team comes to play and they found that out the last two weeks. If the Spartans are going to harness their talent and advance deep into the playoffs this year, they will need a big year from junior LB Scott Becht. He s a junior, Mammoliti said, but he is already a 3-year starter. He has started both ways since he was a freshman. Becht actually won a starting job on the varsity before he was officially enrolled in high school. He came and practiced with us in the summertime before his freshman year, Mammoliti said. He was better than anybody we had at the time at Photo by Mark Adair Williamsville North junior Scott Becht. LB. He was already bigger and smarter than most of the other kids. After 1 game at LB, the Spartans had an injury on the offensive line. We put him in at tackle, Mammoliti said. He dominated and he never left. Becht (6-4, 226) is a solid student that maintains an academic average of 95, despite having a class schedule loaded with Advanced Placement classes. His intelligence is superior, Mammoliti said. He spends as much time watching film as anybody I have ever seen. He logged on last week and he watched more than 6 hours of film. Becht is also a team captain. He s a natural-born leader, Mammoliti said. Other kids followed him in the off-season. A lot of times, the kids will have a Players Only Meeting. They ll eat dinner at someone s house and they watch even more film. He leads the show on that, too. He just has that passion about football. That s what leaders do. 51 By Mark Adair Alfred opened the season two weeks ago with a win over Ithaca and enjoyed a bye week last weekend. I actually don t like a bye this early but we don t get to choose that, Alfred coach Bob Rankl said. The conference has rotations as to who gets their bye each week but we want to get started and get some momentum. In the win over Ithaca, the Saxons trailed at the half. Alfred shut the Bombers out over the last 30 minutes. We definitely did not play our best football game, Rankl said. No doubt about that. We need to improve every single week. Rankl did say that the only stat that matters is the final score. I m not dissatisfied but we definitely need to be cleaner, he said. We have stuff to work on. Alfred, ranked 21st in the nation, will host Utica in their first Empire 8 game this weekend. Every win is vital, Rankl said. It s a dogeat-dog conference. Blaise Faggiano has done a great job with that program and we know we ll have our hands full with them. If Alfred is going to win a second straight Empire 8 Conference title, they will need another big year from senior captain AJ Licata. AJ is an outstanding student and an outstanding football player, Rankl said. He s pretty much everything you want in the leader of your football program. Licata starts at OLB and was Alfred s leading tackler in 2016 as the Saxons finished 12-1, setting a school record for most wins in a season. He finished the season with 153 tackles, just one off the single-season school record. He runs well, he s strong and he s tough, Rankl said. He does everything well. College Football Senior AJ Licata Leading Alfred Alfred advanced to the NCAA Final 8. They were also given the Lambert Cup by the ECAC as the top Division III team in Northeast. Rankl recruited AJ out of Frontier High School. I watched him on film and I could tell he was a very aggressive football player, he said. Did I think he would turn out as good as he has? Probably not but he has worked his tail off to become the kind of player he is. Licata, a Finance Major who maintains a GPA of 3.62, was also given the Jay Berwanger Award as the top Division III player in the northeast. It s a testament to the kind of season he had last year, Rankl said. Those awards usually go to running backs or quarterbacks. It shows how much he is respected by the teams he has played against. He s been amazing. This summer, Licata was named a first-team Division III All-American. AJ deserved it, Rankl said, but he would tell you that he s more interested in winning football games. We are much more interested in winning football games, conference games and playoff games. Photo by Alfred University Alfred senior AJ Licata, a Frontier graduate, was given the Jay Berwanger Award as the top Division III player in Licata was chosen as a team captain by his teammates. The other players see him as a guy who is a leader, Rankl said. He will always does the right thing, in his pads, in the off-season and outside of football. He is a guy you can count on and other people respect him. Licata is also driven to win football games, according to Rankl. He s a very intense competitor on the field, he said. He doesn t like to lose and loves to compete. He doesn t lead by yelling at people. Incredibly, Licata may even be better this year than he was in He has improved every year, Rankl said, and he is playing his best football right now.

52 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
