4 North Honored for Westfield Win Westfield coach Bob North has been named the Buffalo Bills-Army National Guard Coach of the Week after his team beat Southwestern 27-0 last weekend. I thought going into the game that we would have play a perfect game to beat Southwestern, North said. Our kids played pretty close to perfect. It was easily the biggest upset of the weekend. This is one of the biggest wins I ve ever had, North said. I m still just coming down from my high. Running back Michael Okerlund led the offense as he rushed for 138 yards and scored 3 TDs in the second half as the Wolverines pulled away from the defending Section 6 champions. The loss snapped Southwestern s 29-game winning streak at home. The Trojans had not lost at home since September of the 2006 season - almost six years ago. Okerlund started the game off by returning the opening kickoff 88 yards to the Southwestern 1- yard line. That set up a 1-yard TD run by Dan Ferguson. Okerlund also ran for TDs of 12 and 31 yards. He also sealed the win with a 12-yard TD pass from QB Dylan McCubben. North has been the head football at Westfield since the 2010 season... yet this is his second stint as the Wolverines top man in the program. I was the head coach for seven years, he said. But I was in a car accident and I got out of it at that time. North coached the Wolverines from 1987 until In the fall of 1993, he was on his way home from a birthday party one night. I was on Route 20 between Fredonia and Westfield, he said. There was a Grape Truck across the road with no reflectors or any lights. I ran right into it. North was flown to the hospital in a helicopter and was out of school for more than a month. He woke up in the emergency room at 3:30 am. I still don t remember anything about the accident, he said. I don t remember anything at all. North then left the football program but, the following fall, starting coaching the girls volleyball program. He also coached girls softball in the spring. I coached girls volleyball for 10 years, he said. The last few years I have coached year-round. In his coaching career, North has won two Section 6 Buffalo Bills Coach of the Week I thought going into the game that we would have to play a perfect game to beat Southwestern. 3 titles in volleyball, three sectional titles in boys basketball and one Section 6 title in softball. In 2002, the school asked him to take over the vacant Athletic Director s job. When I took the job, he said, I told them that my first love was teaching and coaching. If the job interferes with coaching, I will not be the athletic director anymore. North stayed on as the Athletic Director for 7 years, in addition to coaching three sports and teaching all day. It took too much time for all those duties, he said. I really enjoy coaching and teaching much more than being the athletic director. His son was also coming up through the ranks and North wanted to be a part of My son played football and I wanted to coach him, he said. He s a freshman at Indiana University of Pennsylvania now. Westfield finished 4-4 in 2011 and, before this season started, North got some unexpected help when former Clymer star Jehuu Caulcrick joined his coaching staff. Caulcrick played at Michigan State before spending a few seasons in the NFL. He just came down one day and asked if he could help out, North said. Well, I m not going to turn him down. He s a Big Ten player. Caulcrick still does some work for radio and also does work for Michigan State. He s a local kid and he s so modest considering where he s been, North said. It s real nice to have him with us. North says that the $2,000 award that the Bills give to the Coach of the Week will be extremely helpful. This comes at a great time, he said. Our equipment has been cut a lot lately. Some of our footballs are deflated and half don t hold any air. We could definitely use some new uniforms. North played high school football at Forestville, graduating in He played club volleyball at Slippery Rock University before coming home to get his Master s Degree at Fredonia State. While he was at Fredonia, North played a season of college baseball. He is now in his second stint with Westfield... with the biggest win coming last weekend.

5 Western New York 2012 N O T E B O O K Jackson Leads Rally By Mark Adair Cheektowaga rallied from a 14-0 deficit in the 4th quarter and beat Burgard in overtime last weekend. A lot of our character kids really stepped up and fought the urge to be negative, coach Mike Fatta said. We had two goal-line stands where they were on the one-inch line. The positive kids really stepped up and took the team over when we were down. Cheektowaga senior Marquel Jackson played a huge role in the win. Jackson ran for 96 yards on 19 carries and also made 6 tackles. Late in the 4th quarter, Jackson had a sack, causing a fumble which he picked up and returned 40 yards for a game-tying TD. We were calling timeouts at the end of the game to try and get the ball back for a little bit, Fatta said. Marquel made a great play. Jackson also caught a 30-yard pass for the game-winning TD in the OT session. The Warriors had Photo by Mark Adair Marquel Jackson rushed for 96 yards and scored 2 TDs in Cheektowaga s OT win. stopped Burgard inches from the goal line in the Bulldogs OT possession. It s hard to not feel good about what s going on, Fatta said. We earned that win. We had a lot of penalties and the kids overcame it. Cheektowaga is now 2-0 and sits squarely at the front of the B West Division. The Warrios play a crucial contest this weekend against Lackawanna. With Jackson in the lineup, Cheektowaga will be a contender for the Class B championship at the end of the year. Marquel does a lot for us, Fatta said. He s our leading rusher, he plays linebacker and special teams. We put a lot of responsibility on him and he plays hard every down he is out there. Jackson is receiving interest from some Division I-A scholarship programs. He has the talent to play college football, Fatta said. He has some of the Division I-A schools taking a look at him right now. A lot of it is up to him. For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 7 Maple Grove Senior Survives Illness By Mark Adair Maple Grove opened up a 23-0 lead at the half and beat Cattaraugus-Little Valley 30-6 last weekend. The win improved the Red Dragons record to 2-0 and set up a huge game with longtime rival Randolph this weekend. Right now, we are getting healthy, coach Curt Fischer said. We ve had a couple of kids down but they are getting better. Hopefully, by Week 4, we should be at full strength. The biggest missing piece in Maple Grove s lineup is senior lineman John Scroxton, a 3-year starter on both the offensive and defensive lines. He s a great young man, Fischer said. To say that Scroxton had an injury is a bit of an understatement. Shortly after the Dragons pre-season scrimmage, Scroxton almost died. It was scary, Fischer said. He played in our scrimmage that day and he had 11 pancake blocks. He played great. After his team s scrimmage, Fischer and some of his coaches went to Dunkirk to scout another scrimmage. While we were there, Fischer said, we got a phone call that John was in the hospital in Dunkirk. They said no one knew what was wrong with him but his kidneys were shutting down. Scroxton had begun to feel abdominal pain on the way home from his team s scrimmage earlier that day. When his pain became too great to bear, his parents called the ambulance. We were about 100 yards away from the hospital in Dunkirk, Fischer said. We were going to go right over but they were moving him up to Children s Hospital in Buffalo. We really didn t know what to think. Scroxton was put into Intensive Care at Children s Hospital in Buffalo. He was in intensive care for a week, Fischer said. We were really worried all week long. But on Thursday we started to get some better news. His kidneys had started to come back and function again. Scroxton was diagnosed with Pancreatitis, a viral infection that causes extreme swelling of the pancreas. That causes the kidneys to work harder than they normally would and it also causes extreme abdominal pain. He must have played some of the scrimmage like that, Fischer said, and he didn t say anything about it. The health scare hit hard in the Red Dragons locker room. The team vowed to play for their fallen captain. He s one of the best leaders we ve ever had, Fischer said. He always had our back and we needed to have his back. Scroxton s dedication to Maple Grove football was emphasized before the Dragons season-opening game at Silver Creek. He and his dad actually snuck out of the hospital and came to Silver Creek to watch the first half, Fischer said. They told the doctors that he was going for a walk and they came to the game. Fischer was stunned to see the senior before the start of the game. He was outside the fence when I saw him, he said. He didn t come in because he didn t want to take a chance on getting hit on the sidelines or anything. I went over and gave him a hug and told him that I loved him. Photo by Tim Frank Maple Grove senior John Scroxton survived a dangerous bout of Pancreatitis earlier this season. He is expecting to return to the lineup for Week 4. 5 Scroxton did address his teammates at halftime. He came over and talked to the guys, Fischer said. He put a jolt into us. Scroxton who was 5-8 and 240 at the start of the season, is down to about 215 pounds. He ll get it back fast, Fischer said. He s already back lifting weights and is back in school full time. He s been cleared by two doctors and we are justing waiting to hear from a third doctor. We are hoping he can play Week 4. Scroxton maintains a 97 academic average. He s a great student, Fischer said. He s in the top 10 of his class and should be on the All-Western New York Academic team after the season. Fischer says he has no plans to ease Scroxton into the lineup until his stamina returns. He s not that way, he said. When he s ready to go, he ll be ready to go. As long as the doctors say he can play, I will never be able to hold him back. That s just the way he is.

The Blue Devils evened their record at 1-1 after opening the season with a loss to Jamestown. We had a huge improvement this week, coach Rich Harris said. In Week 1, we had a lot of execution problems. Those are things that happen with a young team. Harris says he has a far different team this season. We won the AA North last two seasons, he said. I was spoiled with all the 3-year starters we had. We are putting a whole bunch of new kids on the field this year. We are starting two freshman and a bunch of juniors. They made one mistake after another in the first game but, this week, the kids focused and we executed a lot better. Harris will now get a true test as to how much his squad has improved when the Devils host Sweet Home. We have a tough one this week, he said. It s a great opportunity to play a great football team. Unfortunately, the Devils will take the field without one of the veterans, senior center Joe Fumerelle, who suffered a knee injury. He dislocated his knee cap during the wrestling season, Harris said. Then he twisted it early on in camp and didn t play in the scrimmage. Fumerelle s knee was re-injured in the win last week. He was tackling somebody and I saw his knee buckle under him, Harris said. It swelled up again. Fumerelle is a high honors student and a stalwart on Photo by Mark Adair Kenmore West senior Joe Fumerelle. the line. It is not known how long he will be out. He s one of your tough guys, Harris said. He won t even show any pain. Fumerelle also starts at MLB on defense. He hits everything moving, harris said. He shows up every day and gives you his best. This group of seniors is a special group, coach Joe Cantafio said. When things didn t go our way, they kept believing in us. The Indians are in first place in the AA South for the first time in several years. However, they will face their stiffest test of the season when they play Orchard Park this week. We need to come back Monday and get ready to play the defending NYS Champions, Cantafio said. It s been four years since we were in the playoffs. Right now, we are in charge of our own destiny and we are playing for our playoff season. One player who has had a solid season thus far is MLB Zach Marshall. Zach has become a monster in the middle, Cantafio said. He is one of the hardest working kids you will ever come across. Marshall also starts at TE for West Seneca. We really have to get him to the ball, Cantafio said. We just have to find a way to get him the ball more. West Seneca has a lot of players getting the ball right now. We ve had six different players who have scored this year, Cantafio said. We have five kids with plays of 20-yards or longer. Marshall, a senior, is a team captain. He s a tremendous leader and a tremendously hard worker, Cantafio Photo by Mark Adair West Seneca West senior Zach Marshall. said. Zach stayed after practice every day to help with the younger kids. I m proud of our kids for playing hard, coach Dean Santorio said. We have confidence in our kids and we ll be ready to play every week. The Vikings rushed for more than 300 yards in the win over NT and added another 150 yards passing. We re pretty happy with that, Santorio said. That s pretty good production. The Vikings now play a crucial game when they host Starpoint. The game will have huge implications for playoff standing at the end of the season. I try not to worry about that, Santorio said. We have to take care of our own business and get our own team ready. We expect this to be a competitive game. Starpoint beat us last year and that ended up being the difference when we didn t make the playoffs. DN If Grand Island is going to qualify for the playoffs this season, one player they will be relying on is senior captain Anthony Zogaria. He s a tough kid, santorio said. He s very physically tough and he s a very smart player. Zogaria is a twoyear starter at FB and ILB. He understands the game and picks things up right away, Santorio said. We will have 8 or 9 underclassmen on the field at any time this season. I saw tremendous improvement. Osburn was also impressed with the speed shown by East High. I coached 5A football in Texas, he said. I got a chance to scout teams with a lot of speed. I scouted Vince Young when he was in high school. Wilson fought until the very end of the game. JFK finally clinched the win when Wilson lost the ball on downs with :30 left. The win was huge for the Bears, especially after losing to Fredonia in Week 1. This was a big game, Ostempowski said. It meant a lot for the playoffs and we were happy to have it on our home field. If JFK is going to make the playoffs in 2012, they will need a big year from senior QB Nick Anderson. JFK senior QB Nick Anderson. The Warriors scored TDs on their first two possessions and led 14-0 at the half. That set the tone for the game, Salamanca coach Paul Furlong said. It seemed like we had them pinned back the whole first half. The Warriors held Cassadaga Valley to just 49 total yards in the first half. I was afraid of their offense, Furlong said. They were real explosive. I didn t want to give them a chance to put together a drive. We wanted to be aggressive and it worked out. Salamanca is now 2-0 and the Warriors game with Allegany-Limestone this weekend will decide the early front-runner in the C South Division. The kids are excited, Furlong said. The Springville win gave the kids some confidence in themselves and in me as a new coach. They knew we could win a tight game. But now we don t want to get caught up in any hype. If Salamanca is going to win the C South title for the second straight year, the Warriors will need a big season from senior QB Tanner John. He s a big, strong kid, Furlong said. He runs real well. I have been as impressed with his defense as with his QB play. He s all over the field. John rushed 9 times for 60 yards and 2 TDs in the win over Cassadaga Valley. He also tossed an 8-yard TD pass. 22 CoverStory Big Man on Campus Orchard Park Lineman Mike Senn has size, speed and smarts By Mark Adair The highly anticipated match-up between Orchard Park and Clarence never happened last weekend as OP flexed its muscles in a win. The Quakers led 35-7 in the second quarter as they took control of the game early. I never feel like it s easy, Orchard Park coach Gene Tundo said. We practice hard all the time. We just made some really good plays and some really great catches that night. But, while Tundo may not think winning football games is easy, his team is certainly making it look easy. In Week 1, the Quakers turned the ball over five times and still scored 42 points in a win over Lockport. When you don t turn the ball over, Tundo said, and play great defense, you win games. Orchard Park has now won 15 straight games and is the defending New York State champions in Class AA. The Quakers are also winning big with almost an entirely new lineup. We have nine new guys on defense, Tundo said. We have eight new guys on offense. That s not new starters. That s a whole new team. Tundo says that he and his coaching staff knew they would have a lot of work after suffering heavy graduation losses from the 2011 championship team. Our coaches have done a tremendous job, he said, and the kids have done a tremendous job. For us to play the way we are playing, guys are stepping up as leaders because they know it s their turn. Many area fans acknowledge that Tundo and the Orchard Park coaching staff begin work as soon as a Photo & Cover Photo by Mark Adair Orchard Park senior lineman Mike Senn throws a block in the Quakers win over Lockport in Week 1. Senn has already been offered scholarships by several Division I colleges. 20 season ends. Tundo says that s not quite true. We actually started working on this season two weeks before last year ended, he said. I m always keeping the future in mind. Our system allows guys to step in and continue from the year before. If you change what your doing, then you have to start over every year. If you have a continuous process, then all the seasons connect. One connection from last season is All-WNY lineman Mike Senn. Senn, a senior this fall, was a starter last season. He is now 6-3 and 300 pounds and is virtually unstoppable on the offensive line. Against Clarence, Senn made a call at the line and proceeded to wipe out three Clarence defenders as RB Mitchell Wilson walked into the end zone untouched. Mike has been working hard for the last four years, Tundo said. He has really prepared physically and mentally for this season. However, Tundo says, Senn is far more than just the biggest kid on the field. He s a good, smart kid, Tundo said. He makes all the line calls for us and changes any blocking schemes at the line. He knows exactly what needs to be done every single play and he s a great leader. He has all the attributes to have a successful football career in college. Senn is also a physical player, proven by the wipeout block against Clarence. It s like a bus hitting somebody, Tundo said. Senn also had no trouble picking up the Quakers Zone See Cover Story on page 23

23 CoverStory continued from page 22 Blocking scheme, which is normally too complicated for high school teams to handle. We zone block a lot, Tundo said. We started doing that four years ago and it became our best play. You have to have smart, patient runners to find the creases and the cut-back lanes. Tundo says he studied the techniques that were designed by famed line coach Jim Mouse McNally. Jim McNally invented it, Tundo said. I took 40 of his tapes and started studying it. You block an area to the side you are running the ball to, instead of blocking a particular man. You end up with temporary double-teams and I think we ve gotten pretty good at it. Not that Senn needs an edge. He s already widely acknowledged as one of the top lineman in Western New York - if not THE best - and is a virtual lock to be a Trench Trophy finalist after the season. He s a great kid, Tundo said. He s modest and hardworking. He is the key to our front group. Senn was given the Underclassmen Award by the Be The Best Football Camp at last winter s Trench Trophy banquet. He s got the size, strength and knowledge, Be The Best owner Dave Hack said. He has all the intangibles you need in a top lineman. Later that night, Senn watched his teammate Devon Leach pick up the Trench Trophy. I enjoyed that, Senn said. It was nice to see a teammate s hard work pay off. He definitely deserved it. Senn, who maintains an academic average around 90, will have a few scholarship offers to sort through before signing day in February. I have a full offer from Bucknell on the table, he said. I had an offer from UB but they took it off the table. UB only has two scholarships available for linemen this year, so they ll make their decision after they see the senior films. Senn is also talking to Lehigh, Lafayette, Monmouth, Syracuse, Rutgers and Old Dominion, one of the top I-AA programs in the country. Coaches from each of those schools are calling him once a week. It s very exciting, Senn said. So far, I ve gotten four calls this week. It s a nice feeling to know that someone wants you. Senn wants to major in Biology or Physical Therapy in college. Maybe Strength and Conditioning, he said. I want to stay in the game when I m done playing. Senn, a senior, says that he has tried not to compare this season s Quakers with the 2011 NYS champs. This is a different year and a different team, he said, But, this year s team is pretty well put together. He does admit that he and his teammates are focused on winning at the Carrier Dome again. That s definitely the goal, he said. We don t want to let down our school or our community. We have to get back to the Dome and win. 21 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! The Panthers opened the season with a win over North Tonawanda, a game Sweet Home led 46-6 at one point. We ve played well, Faller said, but we ll see what happens this week against Kenmore West. Faller says that his team has improved quite a bit between the first two games. But Kenmore West got better too, Faller said. They are improving like we are. Sweet Home has now won 52 straight games against WNY opponents. The Panthers has won five straight Class A titles and public perception is that Sweet Home is a veteran group. However, this season Faller actually has a younger roster than he has had in a while. We have a nice mix this season, Faller said. We do have some very young players but we have a few veterans, too. We have three seniors on the line and a senior quarterback. The Panthers also have three sophomores starting on defense and all three play significant roles on the offense. Jordan Evert and Brandon Smiley start in the defensive backfield while Brad Zaffram starts at linebacker. They are all able to play and they are good enough to start, Faller said. If they weren t good enough to start we wouldn t bring them up at all. Zaffram had a huge game against Kenmore East as he caught 3 passes for 42 yards and a TD. He could play any of our three linebacker spots, Faller said. On offense, he starts at one of our slot receiver positions. He has great hands. Zaffram was a standout on the JV team as a freshman. Zaffram won the Iron Panther Award during Sweet Home s offseason workouts. The Award is given to the player who scores the best in a total of six different physical tests. Being an athletic director has been a goal of mine for a while, Vecchio said. I had been the Sports Information Director for a long time before Paul Vecchio taking on a more administrative role for UB. Being an Athletic Director seemed possible and it was something I wanted to do and I ve been working towards that for a while. This past summer, Vecchio attended the wedding of UB s basketball-great Turner Battle. He spent much of the time saying goodbye to longtime friends. It s hard to say goodbye to all of those people, Vecchio said. I poured so much of myself into UB over the years. I got my Master s Degree from UB. To have all those memories and also leave UB with a degree is something I take a lot of pride in. Vecchio is actually returning to Alfred University. He grew up in Olean and while working as a sports reporter for the Olean Times-Herald, he covered many of the local players who went on to play football for Alfred University. I ve certainly followed Alfred from afar for many years, Vecchio said. I worked with a lot of people from Alfred for a long time. He left the Times-Herald in 1992 to take the Sports Information Director s job at the school. He was with the Saxons Athletic Department until I had a good experience at Alfred and I felt good about the institution, Vecchio said. To return to Alfred as the Athletic Director is really a dream come true for me. Vecchio says that he enjoyed working in the Division I-A level and sees many similarities between I-A Buffalo and Division III Alfred. It doesn t matter what level you compete at, Vecchio said. It s still about the student-athlete experience; learning how to reach your goals, becoming a complete person and leaving the University with a degree. Vecchio takes over for Don Moretti, who served as Alfred s Athletic Director for 14 years before retiring. I got to know Don when he coached football, Vecchio said, and I was a sports reporter for the Times-Herald. 55 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?

56 Perillo Stands Tall THE EXTRA P O I N T By Mark Adair West Seneca West used a bruising running attack to beat Lancaster 34-7 last weekend. It was a huge win for the Indians and gives them the inside track for making the playoffs for the first time in several years. However, the biggest win of the night came before the game even started... it happened with the coin flip. Longtime Section 6 referee Matt Perillo suffered a devastating bout with septicemia this past year. On January 12th, Perillo began feeling sick and left work early. After a sleepless night, he got out of bed and found that his legs were numb and wouldn t support him. His wife Karen rushed him to the doctor. When we got to the doctor s office, his ears were dark red, Karen said. His body had already started to shut down. The doctor called an ambulance and they took him to Buffalo General. Perillo was immediately placed in intensive care and his wife and two daughters were told that he would probably not survive. What followed was a nightmare for the family. Matt was in a coma for two weeks before it was determined that he would have both legs and some of his fingers amputated. With medical bills overwhelming the family, Perillo was flown to Kalamazoo, Matt Perillo. Michigan for a special surgical procedure that might allow him to referee again some day. After he arrived home, Perillo had to go through several months of re-hab just to get fitted for two artifical legs... at the cost of $20,000 each. The Western New York community stepped forward with a benefit night and the money was raised. I m so humbled, Perillo said. I don t even know what to say. Everyone thinks coaches and referees are on different sides but that s just not true. Every coach in 3 counties has come forward to help me. It really drove home to me that we are one football family. With medical bills still threatening the family, West Seneca West coach Joe Cantafio got the idea to host a Matt Perillo Night for the Indians game against Lancaster. When I saw this game on our schedule, Cantafio said, it was a perfect fit. Matt graduated from West Seneca West and he works and lives in Lancaster. People from both communities know him and wanted to help in some way. What a perfect thing to bring everyone together. Cantafio says it was far more than just two teams coming together to help a football family. About three o clock that day, I got a call from one of the West Seneca East coaches, Cantafio said. One of the assistants at East drove over to our place, met me in the parking lot, and put $200 in my hand. He said it was something for Matt from the West Seneca East football program. When Perillo arrived at the game, he slowly made his way across to parking lot to the field. While the crutches made the trek difficult, he refused a ride in a golf cart. He led the West Seneca West team onto the field before the game but that really wasn t enough for his fellow officials. The night s referee, Dale Mussen approached Cantafio before the game. He said, If Matt s here, we are going to put him to work, Cantafio explained. We want him to flip the coin. So Matt was going to go out and flip the coin with the captains. Suddenly, as officials and captains gathered at the center of the field, Perillo looked at Cantafio and said, I m going to do this without crutches. Cantafio was dubious. Then he just stood up and walked out there, he said. I was just overwhelmed. I turned around and looked at my players and their eyes were as big as saucers. They were just fixated on him. Perillo, for the first time since his illness, walked without crutches. He reached the center of the field and stood tall as he gave the captains the Photo by Mark Adair pre-game talk, and flipped the coin. When the P.A. announcer let the crowd in on the fact that this was Perillo s first time walking without crutches, an enormous roar went up. The crowd stood and gave him a long ovation. Perillo looked at Mussen, the referee who demanded that he join his fellow officials for the coin flip... and his heart broke. Dale s wife went into the hospital at the same time I did, he said. She had septicemia, too. Dale s wife didn t make it and I did. She passed away in February just as I was getting ready to lose my legs. Dale and I are fighting the same battle here. Dale became my hero that night. As he left the field, Perillo wondered if he would ever walk on a football field again... and then he made a decision. I m going to be on the football field again, he said. I will ref again. Even if it s just a little league game, I will ref again. 55
