4 Robbins Honored for Perfect Season Canisius coach Rich Robbins was named the Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the U.S. National Guard after his Canisius team beat Bishop Timon in the Msgr. Martin Association championship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Canisius finished a perfect 11-0 season with the win. I m so proud of my coaching staff and our kids, Robbins said. They bought into everything I was giving them for the program. With our schedule and the strength of our league, to go 11-0 is a great accomplishment. The last Msgr. Martin Association team to finish a season unbeaten was St. Joe s in The last Canisius team to finish unbeaten was the 1976 squad that finished Robbins says that, after winning the title and finishing the perfect season, he has heard from Canisius graduates from all over the world. I have received messages from our alumni from around the country, Robbins said. I have s from Canisius alumni that are in the military and overseas. That really brought it home to me that we did accomplish something very special. It was the first Msgr. Martin title for Canisius since the Crusaders won in Qadree Ollison led the Canisius offense as he ran 38 times for 195 yards and 3 TDs. Canisius took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Ollison capped a drive by powering into the end zone from 2 yards out for a 7-0 lead. Anthony Kellerman then caught a 9-yard TD pass from Tyler Mascio for a 14-0 lead. But Timon began to assert it s physical style of play in the second quarter. After a turnover, Timon scored when QB Ryan Dougherty tossed a 9-yard TD pass to Bryant Fulton. Tom Gioia s kick pulled the Tigers within On the next possession, Brad Wellenzohn intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a TD and a tie. Buffalo Bills Coach of the Week 4 Gioia closed the first half when he clanked a FG off the right upright and the teams were tied at the half. Timon recovered a Canisius fumble early in the third quarter and drove 77 yards for a go-ahead score. Adam DiMillo rushed in from the 3-yard line with 5:37 left in the third quarter. A missed PAT left Timon leading by However, Ollison had returned to the game and was feeling normal again. The Canisius ground attack began to dominate. After Timon took its only lead of the game, Canisius drove for a TD on the following possession. Ollison ran the ball every play except one. He finished the drive when he rumbled 13-yards for the TD on 3rd-and-goal. Chris Alaimo kicked the PAT and gave Canisius a lead. Canisius held Timon bottled up deep in their own end and finally forced Timon to turn the ball over on downs at their own 12-yard line. Canisius took advantage of the very short field and powered it s way Photo by Buffalo Bills Canisius coach Rich Robbins was named the Coach of the Week by the Buffalo Bills and the U.S. National Guard after his Crusaders beat Timon in the Msgr. Martin Association title game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. into the end zone, using Ollison in a bruising, methodical drive. With just 3:22 left. Ollison punched it in from the 3-yard line to give the Crusaders a lead. Canisius then forced Timon to turn the ball over on downs again after just 4 plays. The Crusaders ran for a first down and ran out of the clock. Robbins says that his team is already talking about another perfect season in We have a ton of talent coming back, he said. and we have already talked about We want to keep it rolling. The juniors that are coming back want to go undefeated in their senior year, too. Robbins said that since taking over the canisius program, he has tried to run it as a family-operation. We are a program and a family, Robbins said. We are a program for the 9th grader, the 55th kid on the team and the last guy on our bench. Everyone is an equal part of our family.

5 The All-FW Team In this issue is our annual All-Football Weekly team. Before the season started I asked six area fans who are deeply involved in the Western New York Football scene to help with the selection process. Each of the six went WAY above-and-beyond the call of duty and submitted four complete all-star teams. I will not name these people. One of our criteria is that the committee members identities will remain a secret. I do not want them to start getting pressured to name certain kids because people know who they are... and where they live. Here are a few items to remember when looking over the selections. 1. All-Football Weekly: These teams are made up of players from teams that have participated with the Football Weekly. If your school has chosen not to participate, your players are not eligible. There are four teams in Western New York that chose not to participate Brought to you by the Letter Q with our magazine in Players from those four schools are not recognized on the All-Football Weekly team. 2. Positions: Each Offensive Team is made up of 1 Quarterback, 3 Running Backs, 2 Wide Receivers, 5 man, 1 Tight End, 1 kicker and 1 Specialty Player total. S E C T I O N 6 Football Upstate W E E K L Y Each Defensive Team is made up of 4 Defensive Linemen, 4 s, 4 Defensive Backs, 1 Punter and 1 Specialty Player total. 3. Team Record: The All Football Weekly Team is loaded with players who helped their teams reach Ralph Wilson Stadium and the Section 6 finals. It makes sense... the best teams obviously have the best players. While a losing record did disqualify any player from being recognized as one of the best players in Western New York, players certainly got noticed when their teams won more games. 4. Big Games: Big regular season games and playoff games carried more weight than other games. Big players deliver in big games. 5 Sopko is Coach of the Year November 15, 2012 Issue No Pages Canisius junior RB Qadree Ollison is WNY s 2012 Player of the Year Springville coach led a miracle rebound from WNY Teams Move on to Carrier Dome State Records Team Reports NYS Rankings Schedules ALSO: PLUS: Sideline Chatter Extra Point Section 6 Standings Canisius Wins MMA title over Timon Football Weekly names Annual All-star team 5. Behavior Counts: Players who were suspended for behavioral reasons were not eligible for our postseason honors. The best players should carry themselves with some sense of dignity. Players who were discipline problems for their teams or their schools were not recognized at all. Behavior counts kids... behavior counts more than winning football games. 6. Grades Count: Most of these players are superior students... or at least good students. A few struggle with academics but they try hard. Players who were academically suspended because of outright laziness were not eligible for the team. If you can t give half an effort in the classroom, we will not reward you with post-season honors. 7. One Per Customer: Many all-star teams will list players at multiple positions. For the All-Football Weekly team, each player is listed once. If a lineman is named a 1st-team offensive lineman, he is not eligible to be recognized as a 2nd-team linebacker. Canisius RB Qadree Ollison is our Player of the Year and, therefore, is not eligible to be listed at a position. 8. Attitude Counts: Players that were guilty of poor sportsmanship were downgraded. We may not throw them off the team, but our best players do not taunt opposing players or get into obscene screaming matches with opposing fans. The best know they are the best INSIDE: and they act like it. 9., All-League Teams: Each League in WNY submitted an All-League team as chosen by the coaches. Also, each coach in Western New York was asked to nominate players for a catagory that we call Super Seniors. These are players that have given everything they have to their programs. These kids may not be allstars, but they are all good kids who gave everything they possibly could for the betterment of their teams. We wanted to salute them one final time... and thank them for putting on a great show for all of us fans out here.

15 Canisius Finishes Perfect By Mark Adair Canisius fell behind in the third quarter but rallied to beat Bishop Timon in the Msgr. Martin Association championship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. I am very proud of our coaches and our program, Canisius coach Rich Robbins said. And I m relieved that we were able to finish an undefeated season. Robbins said he was excited after the game - but did not understand the Crusaders accomplishment until Monday. I have received messages from our alumni and people from around the country, he said. My box is jammed and a lot of those messages are from Canisius grads who are in the miltary and are overseas. That s when I started to realize that we did accomplish something very special. It was the first title for Canisius since the Crusaders won the MMA title in Qadree Ollison led the Canisius running attack as he ran 38 times for 195 yards and 3 TDs. When all 55 guys come together as we did, great things can happen, Ollison said. Even worse for Canisius, Ollison was shaken up and dazed from a ferocious hit he took with just 5 minutes left in the quarter. He spent the next two series trying to regroup on the bench. With 3 minutes left, he entered the game on defense but struggled to find his footing. Timon was keying on Qadree and he took some huge hits, Robbins said. We are a different team when Qadree is not out there. We Q is out, we are just a very different team. Gioia closed the first half when he clanked a FG off the right upright and the teams were tied at the half. We made so many mistakes, Robbins said. We had 4 turnovers, 3 of them in the second quarter. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Not only that, but Timon was winning the physical battle in the trenches. Timon s line out-physicaled us and that s the first time that has happened all year, Robbins said. I challenged our line at halftime. We have to out-physcial them in the second half and our kids did that. Early in the third quarter, Timon recovered a Canisius fumble and drove 77 yards for a go-ahead score. Adam DiMillo rushed in from the 3- yard line with 5:37 left in the third quarter. A missed PAT left Timon leading by Canisius began to wear down the physical Timon team and the Crusaders line began to dominate. Also, Ollison returned to the game in the third quarter and Canisius began to control the ground game again. On the following possession after Timon took it s only lead, Canisius drove for a TD. Photo by Mark Adair Senior tackle Ryan Hunter led a bruising Canisius line as the Crusaders finished a perfect 11-0 season with a win over Timon in the MMA title game. 15 Ollison ran the ball every play except one and he rumbled 13-yards for the TD on 3rdand-goal. Chris Alaimo kicked the PAT and Canisius held a lead. It speaks to the tougheness of our kids, Robbins said. They were not going to let that game go the other way. Canisius held Timon bottled up deep in their own end and finally forced Timon to turn the ball over on downs at their own 12-yard line. Canisius took advantage of the very short field and powered it s way into the end zone, using Ollison in a bruising, methodical drive. With just 3:22 left. Ollison punched in from the 3 to give Canisius a lead. Canisius then forced Timon to turn the ball over on downs again after just 4 plays. The Crusaders ran for a first down and then ran out of the clock. With our linemen up front, we wear people down, Robbins said. At the end of the third quarter and in the fourth quarter, we do what we need to do.

30 CoverStory By Mark Adair Player of the Year Canisius RB Qadree Ollison named WNY s Best Player Canisius RB Qadree Ollison has been named the Player of the Year by the Football Weekly. Ollison, a junior, had an outstanding season as he led Canisius to a perfect 11-0 season and the Msgr. Martin Association title. It s been an amazing 11 months, Canisius coach Rich Robbins said. I don t think a lot of people outside our locker room believed we could do it. Canisius entered the game ranked #2 in New York State s Class AA pol. The top-ranked team, Shaker, lost to New Rochelle in the NYS playoffs - and with a perfect 11-0 record, the Crusaders have a real shot at ending the season as the top-ranked large-school team in New York State. We have to let other people worry about that stuff like rankings, Robbins said. We just had to take care of our own business. Ollison rushed for 195 yards and 3 TDs to lead Canisius to a win over Bishop Timon in the MMA title game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Ollison (6-1, 205) finished the season with 1,976 yards and 27 TDs on 202 carries. He scored 26 TDs rushing. He also caught 9 passes for 116 yards and a TD. Ollison scored a school-record 156 points this season. He also set the school s single-season rushing record. Ollison broke the single-season scoring record held by his friend, last year s starter, Mercer Timmis. Mercer was a great tailback, Ollison said. Mercer is a guy I really looked up to as someone I wanted to be like. It s a great accomplishment for me and the school. Ollison still stays in touch with Timmis through texting. Photo by Mark Adair Qadree Ollison rushed for 1,976 yards and scored 27 TDs as he led Canisius to an 11-0 season this fall. He ran for 195 yards and 3 TDs as Canisius beat Timon in the MMA title game. 30 Mercer is at Calgary University and they are in the quarterfinals in the national tournament in Canada, Ollison said. In the biggest game of the year, a win over arch-rival St. Joe s, Ollison ran for a singlegame record 344 yards and 4 TDs. That was the best I have seen him, Robbins said. It was such a big game, there so much on the line, the weather was terrible and he responded to all of it. Ollison also led Canisius to wins over Section 5 Class AA champion Aquinas, Rochester s McQuaid and Walsh Jesuit of Ohio. The last Msgr. Martin team to finish undefeated was St. Joe s in Ollison grew up playing youth football in Niagara Falls. His father, Wayne, was his coach for much of that time. But when the time came to choose a place to play high school football, the Ollison s chose Canisius. Qadree came to our school as a freshman, Robbins said. He s been with us the whole time. His dad was looking for a good athletic and academic opportunity for him and so they chose Canisius. Ollison fit into the football program right away. In fact, he was called up to the varsity team halfway through his freshman year. Physically, he was still developing, Robbins said. What amazed me was how well he understood the game at such a young age. He was 13 years old and playing varsity football. Ollison played wide receiver that first season and See Cover Story on page 31

31 CoverStory continued from page 30 moved to RB as a sophomore. He played some running back behind Mercer Timmis, Robbins said. and he played some linebacker. Qadree started most games at WR but saw enough time in the backfield to rush for 803 yards and 8 TDs on 87 carries. But Robbins said one thing stood out with Ollison. His love for the game, Robbins said. He loves football and loves being around it. He loves to play, he loves to be preparing to play. Ollison actually prepared for this season like no other player has in Robbins memory. He started working out with us in the off-season, Robbins said. Every day, when he left us, he went to work out with his personal trainer. Robbins noticed Ollison getting physically stronger and faster over the winter. We do the passing league at the Ralph, Robbins said. We went to a few tournaments at colleges and we did the passing league at Lancaster High School in July. At each stop this season, Ollison seemed to be better than the tournament before. You could tell he was faster, Robbins said, but once we put the pads back on we really were able to see how much more powerful he was. He added 10 or 15 pounds of muscle. The first time we went live in August, he was just running people over left and right. Canisius had to battle to beat Timon in the MMA championship game. While many people expected Canisius to roll past the Tigers, Canisius trailed in the third quarter and had to come back to claim the trophy. We expected a competitive game, Robbins said. We have a lot of respect for Timon. They are very physical up front and they have lot of good players. We were not at all surprised to see them in the championship game. Ollison said he was surprised to hear he was named the Player of the Year by the Football Weekly. It s an honor, Ollison said. Especially being a junior. I thought a senior would get named. Ollison is already getting some hard recruiting looks from some Division I schools. His performance this season will only make his stock rise. I ve heard of interest from a lot of MAC schools and some Big East schools, Robbins said. If he puts up big stats and has another big season next year as a senior and we ll be hearing the phone ring quite a bit. Ollison has been timed at 4.6 in the 40-yard dash and has the added advantage of relative youth. He s still a young junior, Robbins said. He just turned 16 during this past the off-season. With another season of work he will improve on his combine-type measurables. Robbins also said that playing in the Msgr. Martin will automatically raise interest in Ollison. We have John Urschel playing at Penn State, Robbins said. Jimmy Gaines is playing at Miami. St. Francis just sent Akeel Lynch to Penn State. Qadree definitely fits that mold and could compete at that level. 31 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!! 32 CoverStory Sopko Named Top Coach By Mark Adair Springville coached honored by WNY Coaches vote After soliciting votes from every WNY football coach, Springville coach John Sopko has been named the Coach of the Year by the Football Weekly. Sopko s team posted a record of just 5-5, but the coach led his team to a miracle turnaround that ended when they played Alden for the Section 6 championship at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Springville started the season each loss seemingly more disheartening than the previous loss. A last-play, Hail Mary pass, a late-game kickoff return and an overtime defeat all would have crushed many teams. Springville playing at the Ralph was just not on anyone s radar. But Sopko kept his team looking forward and the Griffins won the next 5 games to qualify for a spot in the Class B championship game. The kids knew they were competitive, Sopko said. We actually thought we should have won all of those games. But they never lost focus. After each loss we just went back to work. Sopko, grew quiet when he was told of the coaches vote that named him WNY Coach of the Year. That s a bit overwhelming, he said. To think that there are guys like John Faller at Sweet Home and Pat Slater at randolph and Glen Graham at Cleve Hill... to even be talked about with their programs is a bit overwhelming. Sopko says that many coaches in Western New York have done what he hopes to do at Springville. I look at Jay Sirianni at Southwestern, Sopko said. There are tremendous people coaching and doing great work and building tremendous programs. These are guys Photo by Tim Frank Springville coach John Sopko was named the Football Weekly s Coach of the Year after a vote by all football coaches in Western New York. Sopko led Springville to the Class B title game. 32 that have all dealt with their own stuff and had their own moments of doubt. I absolutely admire the great work these guys do and to get that sort of acknowledgement from them is humbling. Sopko says that when he was hired three years ago at Springville, he didn t really want the job. It wasn t something I was soliciting, he said. I had coached in the district a long time but gone on to coach at Canisius College. They dropped their program and I really didn t want to be a problem for anyone so I didn t coach for a while. But, Springville had experienced a few years of turmoil and turnover at the administrative levels of the district and the disjointed approach began to show in the results on the field. We used to do things the same way from the varsity, to the junior varsity, right on down to the Little League here in town, Sopko said. Everything down to how the center holds the ball to snap it to the quarterback was taught the same exact way. The teaching was done on the lower levels - not at the varsity level. With all of the changeover at the administrative levels, the continuity of the football program was lost. Eventually, the football program bottomed out. With the community in an uproar, the district hired Archie Bradley, Silver Creek s longtime Athletic Director, as a consultant to look at the athletic department and suggest improvements. When people ask what happened to Springville, there was no mystery, Sopko said. Somewhere along the way, See Cover Story on page 33

33 CoverStory continued from page 32 we lost that vertical alignment you have to have to be successful at anything. Sopko said that he doesn t mean his way is the only successful system - or even the most successful system. You can do things any way you want, he said, but you do have to have a way. The way you do things at the varsity level need to be taught and enhanced at the lower levels. You can t teach systems at the varsity level and expect to have any sustained success. I m not trying to re-invent the wheel. I m trying to use the wheel that Springville used successfully for 35 years. Three years ago, in Sopko s first season on the job, Springville finished 1-8. But, the rebuilding had started. We started to put a staff together, Sopko said. I ve had one excellent assistant coach with me from Day 1. Rob Valenti joined me early on and has been with me side-by-side the whole way. Valenti is now the line coach and works with the defense. Later, Bill Bursee and Garret Girst joined the varsity staff while Greg Hodges and Bill Dickinson were asked to take over the JV program. Ed Bates and Rick DeKay were installed at the modified level. It took us three years to get the staff in place, Sopko said, and it s a great staff. Each of these guys have been tremendous for the program. This past season, the Griffins made their miracle turnaround despite suffering several hardships throughout the season. Three players on the Springville team suffered the loss of a parent during the season. When you suffer setbacks, it s important that people are there to support you, Sopko said. It wasn t lost on many people that our players went to the wakes and the funerals. If your teammates will be there for you at a time like that, then they will be there for you when you lose to Salamanca by a point. The kids understand that they mean more than just the bodies for your Xs and Os. Sopko says that the players are the central focus of any football program. These are great kids and they are going to be great adults, he said. What s always kept me going is these kids. If I ever stopped coaching, I would really feel the loss with the kids. That s never changed. Sopko started his teaching career at Alden and was there for 4 years before accepting a job at Springville. He has taught Social Studies at Springville for the past 24 years. His wife Crystal also works for the district. His son Erik lives in Buffalo and his daughter Nichole is a Guidance Counselor at Cattaraugus-Little Valley. Sopko and Crystal have three grandsons and a granddaughter, They make you laugh, they are funny as hell, he said. Crystal and I just laugh at what they do all the time. The two oldest grandkids come to all the home games and a lot of the road games and I just love having them around. 33 For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 65 THE EXTRA P O I N T school student. He had a teaching job at Williamsville East and had worked as an assistant football coach at East for 15 years. I started as a JV assistant, he said, and then I did 15 years as a varsity assistant. When East coach Dan Kelly retired from coaching in 2005, Torrillo applied for the head job. I didn t get it, he said. They hired someone else. I wanted to continue coaching football so I went back to Sweet Home. Torrillo coached under John Faller for three years as a volunteer. Being on Faller s staff meant he could watch his sons play - which would never have happened if he had been the head coach at Williamsville East. 66 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?
