It was a great team effort, Smith said. The special teams played well. Everyone got in to play and a lot of kids contributed. St. Francis will now play St. Joeʼs for the Msgr. Martin Association championship in Ralph Wilson Stadium on Thursday. This is great for all of Western New York, Smith said. Martin Association playoffs. I did that for 2 years, he said. I was the head varsity wrestling coach at Turner both years. It was a great experience. It taught me real quick about being responsible for a whole bunch of other people. Smith then played one season at Oskaloosa College in Iowa before returning home to play for Canisius. I never wanted to be one of those ʻcoulda-wouldashouldaʼ guys, Smith said. I played outside linebacker and played a little bit. Nothing special. One year later, in 1981, Smith started at St. Francis as an assistant coach. In 1988 he was named the head coach. Smith has compiled a record of in his 23 seasons while annually playing high school powers from around the Northeast..

5 Western New York 2011 N O T E B O O K Two Move On to Dome Western New York will have two teams trying to bring home a New York State championship this weekend at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. Orchard Park, which won a NYS title in 2008, will be making it s second trip to the state final in Class AA. Southwestern will be making it s third trip in Class C. The Trojans won state titles in 2008 and Orchard Park routed Binghamton, 35-6, in the state semifinals before an estimated 1,600 at Spartan Stadium at East Syracuse- Minoa High School. Senior running back Okoya Anderson (6-1, 230) ran for 203 yards and 3 TDs on 30 carries to lead the offense. Senior QB David Photo by Tim Frank Okoya Anderson. Crowley was efficient as he completed 6-of-9 passes for 185 yards and 2 TDs. Crowley was not intercepted as OP improved to James Fitzgerald had 10 tackles to lead the defense. Fitzgerald led the Quakers Big Cat offense as Orchard Park scored 3 TDs in the fourth quarter for a comeback victory over Rush-Henrietta in last week s Far West Regionals. Orchard Park will play Newburgh Free Academy at 6 pm Sunday for the New York State Class AA championship. Southwestern beat Waverly (IV), 19-13, before an estimated 1,800 at East Syracuse-Minoa High School's Spartan Stadium. The Trojans took advantage of six Waverly turnovers as they advanced to next Sunday's state championship. The Trojans took a 13-6 lead at the half. QB Jake Pilling, tossed an 11-yard TD to junior Andy Greenlee and a 36-yard TD to Jake Swan. Tanner Hoose kicked a pair of field goals for a 19-6 lead in the 4th quarter. Southwestern suffered its first regular season loss in four years (to Salamanca) in Week Four, but has not lost since. The Trojans have won several close games in the post-season, including an OT win over Fredonia and a 10-0 defensive battle over Cleveland Hill for the Section VI championship). The Trojans also beat Section V (Rochester area) champion Wellsville 24-6 in the Far West Regionals. For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 6 Unsung Players Lead Frannies St. Francis beat St. Joeʼs in the Msgr. Martin Association Championship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium last week. I was very nervous going into the game, St. Francis coach Jerry Smith said. I was worried about how our guys would respond when they made mistakes. I was just hoping that no one walked off the field wishing they could have done more and that didnʼt happen. Every one of our kids responded well and gave everything they could. This is the first Msgr. Martin title for St. Francis since Iʼm especially glad for this group of seniors, Smith said. Itʼs always great to go out as a champion. The game was billed as a meeting of the two best players in Western New York - but it was unsung players that stepped into the spotlight. St. Francis RB Akeel Lynch rushed for 167 yards and 2 TDs in the first half. Shortly before the break, Lynch broke through a hole and suddenly went down. He had suffered a turf toe injury and left the game. Lynch carried the ball just twice in the second half due to the injury. He ran angry when he was in there, Smith said. He tried to come back in the second half but he couldnʼt go. Akeel threw all of his support behind the other guys. St. Joeʼs QB Chad Kelly had a big night but was somewhat limited. He completed 15 of 35 passes for 203 yards. Kelly also rushed 14 times for 122 yards and 2 TDs. Several of Kellyʼs runs were highlight-reel scrambles where he turned away from several would-be tacklers before heading downfield. Chad Kelly made a name for himself in this game last year, Smith said. This year we had two of the best players to ever come out of WNY. Our guys showed we were not a one-man team. We have a lot of talent out there and we have a very good team. Maybe we had a couple of other kids make a name for themself this year. St. Francis RB Alex Misterman replaced Lynch and rushed 18 times for 150 yards, including a 23-yard TD. If Akeel wasnʼt on our team, Alex would be our star, Smith said. I give him a tremendous amount a credit to put selfishness to the side and sacrifice for the better of the team. Misterman has played several positions this season, in addition to serving as Lynchʼs relief at running back. He plays whatever we want, Smith said. Heʼs played cornerback, linebacker and nose tackle for us. He is strong, very quick and explosive. He zips right by the offensive line and gets pressure on the quarterback. Misterman, a junior, also maintains a 90-academic average and is one of WNYʼs top lacrosse players. Alex is one of those kids where, if you look at stats, you donʼt realize how important he is, Smith said. St. Francis QB Brian Melisz threw just three passes and completed one - but it was a big one. With St. Francis holding a lead early in the 4th quarter, Melisz tossed a 50-yard TD pass. Brian had a great game, Smith said. He audibled and caught them with nine in the box and without a safetry. The pass was perfect. Melisz also had two big runs on 3rd down that kept Photo by Mark Adair Alex Misterman rushed 18 times for 150 yards and a TD to help St. Francis beat St. Joeʼs in the Msgr. Martin championship game. scoring drives alive. There is a lot more to being a QB than just throwing passes, Smith said. You have to put everyone else in the right spot. This was Brianʼs break-out game. He played great. Another player that had a big game was Dominic Buccieri, the Raiders kicker and punter. Several times, Buccieri angled his kickoffs into the corner and pinned St. Joeʼs return men deep into their own territory. One kickoff almost resulted in a safety as the Raiders made the tackle inside the 1-yardline. He placed those kickoffs perfectly, Smith said. Heʼs a kid that really should be considered for all-western New York. Buccieri also plays wide receiver and defensive back for St. Francis. He plays everything, Smith said. He also returns punts and kicks for us. Heʼs a player so we want him on the field. - Mark Adair

25 CoverStory Player of the Year QB Jordan Johnson leads Sweet Home to Section 6 Championship By Mark Adair After leading his team to a 10-1 record and a fifth straight Section 6 championship, Jordan Johnson has been named the Player of the Year by the Football Weekly. Johnson rushed for 3 TDs and intercepted a pass as the Panthers beat Williamsville South in Ralph Wilson Stadium to win Sweet Homeʼs 5th straight Class A title. The Panthers fell behind early to Aquinas in the Far West Regionals and lost We just couldnʼt stop them, Sweet Home coach John Faller said. We have a good team but Aquinas is a great team. Johnson said that he is pleased with the Panthers fifth straight Section 6 title but he will be bothered by the season-ending loss to Aquinas. As a whole it was a great season, he said. Aquinas is just a great team and they came out on top. They were the better team. Johnson said that he is proud of the way his team finished the season. I enjoyed myself this year, he said. It was a great year and it was fun to be out on the field with my team. Our players really cared about each other and came together. We really grew as a team by the end of the year. Our ultimate goal was to win a state championship. We didnʼt do that but it was still a great year. The senior finishes his high school career with a record of as Sweet Homeʼs starting QB. He started at defensive end as a sophomore when Sweet Home finished 13-0 and won the New York State Championship. In the three seasons that Johnson was a varsity player, Sweet Home won all 30 games against WNY teams. Sweet Home QB Jordan Johnson was named the Player of the Year. Johnson led Sweet Home to a 20-2 record as the Panthers starting QB. 25 Photo by Tim Frank The Panthers have now won 50 straight games against WNY opponents. The past two seasons, Sweet Home has lost only to Aquinas - despite the fact that the Panthers roster is drastically different than two years ago. Jordan had a different team in front of him, Faller said. Itʼs different. We had all-state running backs and receivers. There were more bullets in the gun with that group. Itʼs just not the same and we still won two straight championships. The Panthers, simply, were not the same team that won back-to-back NYS championships in 2008 and None of our starting linemen were back from last year, Faller said. We had a lot of kids that were good players but we didnʼt have the same type of guns we had in the past. It was known as early as August that Sweet Home was going to need a huge year from Johnson. There was a lot put on his shoulders this year, Faller said. He knew it coming into the season and I think he answered the call pretty well. Johnson rushed for 1,365 yards and 22 TDs this season. He averaged an incredible 9.5 yards per carry. This fall, in almost every contest, Johnson made a huge play at a critical part of the game. Even in the Panthers loss to Aquinas, he returned an interception 65 yards for a TD. Johnson completed 58 of 111 passes for 830 yards and 9 TDs in He also returned punts and kickoffs. He came into the season with confidence because of See Cover Story on page 26

26 CoverStory continued from page 25 what he did last year, Faller said. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in both years. As the Panthers began the second half of the season, Johnson began to play more on defense. He intercepted a pass in the Panthers win at ʻThe Ralphʼ. He played defensive end and defensive back, Faller said. In the playoffs, he knew we needed him more and more and he stepped up and performed. Once the Panthers reached the playoffs, Johnson did everything. He rushed for 206 yards and 2 TDs in a first-round win over West Seneca East. In the semifinals, Johnson ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to rally Sweet Home to an victory over Bennett. He led a scoring drive in the fourth quarter to put Sweet Home up, 18-14, its first lead of the day. Bennett was tough, Faller said. They were big and physical. We had to come from behind and Jordan made a couple of plays. That happened more than once this season. We had to come from behind a few times and he always seemed to make a play for us, Faller said. There werenʼt many games where he didnʼt play a key role. When anyone lined up against us, they knew they had to stop Jordan. Johnson says that it wasnʼt a one-man show. It was a team effort, Jordan said. The ball is in my hands because Iʼm the quarterback but anybody on that team could have made plays. You have to think about the linemen that blocked for you and the receiver that caught the ball. We were a lot more than just one player. Johnson a 6-1, 205-pound senior with 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash, has already verbally committed to play at UB next fall. I think UB is a good fit for him, Faller said. Heʼll be part of the recruiting class that will try to turn things around. UB can use him at wide receiver, running back or defensive back. Weʼll just have to wait and see where they put him. Faller said that, wherever he plays, Johnson could help UB coach Jeff Quinn. Jordan is that good of an athlete, Faller said. Heʼll can play wherever they need him. Heʼs upbeat, he has a good attitude and heʼs a winner. Faller also said that Johnson will walk into a good situation at UB. The MAC is a good league to play in, he said. Itʼs not the SEC but itʼs no slouch, either. Jordan has a chance to play and help turn around a Division I-A program. I think heʼll do well there. Johnson says he is looking forward to playing college football. He played basketball for three years but dropped the sport this winter so he can run track instead. I wanted to run indoor track to keep my speed up and get ready for college, he said. I really canʼt wait to play college football. Johnson says that he hopes that Sweet Home can win a 6th straight Class A title in Itʼs their team now, he said. I think theyʼll be okay. There is talent at Photo by Mark Adair Johnson rushed for over 1,000 yards two straight years and was a part of teams that won 33 of 35 games the past three seasons. 26 Sweet Home. We might have the best and the best coaches around. Weʼll be all right as far as our tradition is concerned. Heʼll be watching closely from his spot at UB - which is just a long punt from Sweet Homeʼs football field. UB is about five minutes from my house, Johnson said. Iʼm looking forward to it. I wanted to stay home and play but you still never know what will open up. As long as the staff is close and you have a coach that cares about his family and his team, thatʼs really the place you want to go. In addition to all of his accomplishments on the field, Johnson maintains a 3.0 GPA and scored well enough on the SAT and the ACT to sail through the NCAA Clearinghouse. I donʼt know how much more you can ask from a high school football player, Faller said. I think Jordan represented himself and our school very well.

27 CoverStory All In The Family Southwestern coach Jay Sirianni is named Coach of the Year By Mark Adair Southwestern advanced to its third New York State championship game in four years as it beat Section IV champion Waverly, last weekend. The Trojans took advantage of six Waverly turnovers - five in the second half - as they held off the Binghamtonarea school. Southwestern, which beat Wellsville 24-6 in the Far West Regionals, is now The Trojans will try and win the schoolʼs 3rd NYS Class C title this weekend against Dobbs Ferry on the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University. Southwestern coach Jay Sirianni has been named the Coach of the Year by the Football Weekly. While the previous NYS championship teams from Southwestern were loaded with All-state players who would move on to play in college, this yearʼs Trojans had to do more with less. All season long people were saying that we werenʼt the Southwestern teams of two years ago, Sirianni said. Well, weʼre not. We lost a lot of kids from the 2010 team but, coming back, we had kids that wanted to work. Talent can only get Southwestern coach Jay Sirianni has led the Trojans to the Carrier Dome for the third time in the last four seasons. you so far anyhow. These kids have bought into what we are trying to do and they wanted to work hard. When you have 30 kids that have faith in the system, you can accomplish a lot. Sirianni is proud of the fact that his team bounced back from a regular-season loss to eventual league-champion Salamanca. It was the first regular-season loss in four years for Southwestern and they dropped fast in the NYS rankings. We lost a football game, Sirianni said. It happens. He also said that naming him Coach of the Year was a reflection on the entire program. I havenʼt made a single tackle this year, Sirianni said. We are all excited to be here but our kids earned it. 27 Photo by Mark Adair Sirianni is certainly near the top of any list of WNY coaches. In fact, his entire family can be considered itʼs own small WNY Coaching Tree. Sirianniʼs father, Fran, was the head coach at Southwestern from 1976 until My older brother and I would go to practice with my dad all the time, Jay said. When a lot of my friendʼs dads were at work, I was at work with my dad. Iʼve been a part of Southwestern football since the day I was born. Itʼs an understatement to say the Sirianniʼs are a ʻfootball familyʼ. For the last ten years, Jayʼs older brother Mike has been the head coach at Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania. Entering the 2011 season, Sirianni had a won-lost record of Jayʼs younger brother Nick is an offensive assistant coach in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs. Thatʼs a lot of coaches to lean on for advice and ideas... something Jay says he does regularly. Nick and I talk Wednesday night after the Chiefsʼ practice, he said. Sometimes heʼll call me after our game. Sometimes we talk on weekends at midnight or 1 in the morning. Mike will get updates from my dad on the sidelines during our games. Jay Sirianni says his family was not consumed with football as he was growing up. We were a typical family, Jay Sirianni said. My parents were very much involved in what we were doing. Football was just a part of our life. Family was our focal point and football was only a part of it. Sirianni says that he understands how that popular misconception could be spread. See Cover Story on page 28

28 CoachoftheYear continued from page 27 Iʼve been asked about that a lot, he said. People have defined us that way but itʼs not the most important thing to us. We donʼt just talk strategy. Thatʼs certainly a part of it but thatʼs not all we talk about. This past season, Jay asked his father to join the varsity coaching staff at Southwestern. My dad is a big part of Southwestern football, Jay said. Heʼs always been around. Fran Sirianni was working with Southwesternʼs modified team until the school district discontinued the team during recent budget cuts. When we dropped modified football we brought him up, Sirianni said. I use him as a QB coach and that enables me to work with WRs and RBs. He gives us an extra coach at practice and thatʼs just huge. Fran Sirianni actually got some professional tutoring in how to work with QBs - from a family member of course. He went out to Kansas City and watched some quarterback drills with Nick, Jay Sirianni said. He came back with a notebook full of stuff that he got from Jim Zorn, one of the best QB coaches in the NFL. Dad was pretty excited. Fran Sirianni was Southwesternʼs head coach from 1976 until He left the position after he was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. I had to step back and re-evaluate things, Fran said. I wasnʼt able to actively coach but I was able to help out a bit. He also said that was a difficult period for the family. It was hard on those guys, Fran said. Mike and Jay were old enough to know where our family stood and what we were facing. Mike was going into freshman year and Jay was playing modified football. I was able to go to all the games and eventually I beat it. Doctors say re-mission, I say healed. Fran Sirianni played football for Kane High School in Pennsylvania, near Bradford. He played Division II football for Clarion College and was named an All-Conference DB. He and his wife Amy have been married 40 years and, when his kids were small, he never once thought that they would all grow to be coaches. Itʼs ironic, Fran said. In high school, all three of them would much rather play and coach basketball but they all settled on football. They came to every practice and game with me when they were young children. They have been around football since they were old enough to walk, so itʼs nice. Sirianni said that he is immensely proud that each of his sons has been as successful as they have. They all put in a lot of hard work, he said. and they have all made their own tracks. Nick could never coach anywhere but the professional football. Mike is at Washington & Jefferson and has the 3rd best winning percentage at all levels in the NCAA. Jay will be a lifer at Southwestern. Heʼll never be interested in coaching anywhere else. Jay has put up some amazing records lately. His teams won 39-straight games and have posted a record 47-2 over the past four seasons. Heʼs an amazing coach, Fran Sirianni said. Heʼs amazing teacher, too. Heʼs so good at working with young men. Heʼs so concerned about their character and what they will be after football. 59 It s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again......who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeekly Upstate Are You Game?

60 THE EXTRA P O I N T By Mark Adair The All-FW Team In this issue is our annual All-Football Weekly team. Before the season started I asked six area fans who are deeply involved in the Western New York Football scene to help with the selection process. Each of the six went WAY above-andbeyond the call of duty and submitted four complete all-star teams. I will not name these people. One of our criteria is that the committee membersʼ identities will remain a secret. I do not want them to start getting pressured to name certain kids because people know who they are... and where they live. Here are a few items to remember when looking over the selections. 1. All-Football Weekly: These teams are made up of players from teams that have participated with the Football Weekly. If your school has chosen not to participate, your players are not eligible. There are four teams in Western New York that chose not to participate with our magazine in Players from those four schools are not recognized on the All- Football Weekly team. 2. Positions: Each Offensive Team is made up of 1 Quarterback, 3 Running Backs, 2 Wide Receivers, 5 man, 1 Tight End, 1 kicker and 1 Specialty Player total. Each Defensive Team is made up of 4 Defensive Linemen, 4 s, 4 Defensive Backs, 1 Punter and 1 Specialty Player total. 3. Team Record: The All Football Weekly Team is loaded with players who helped their teams reach Ralph Wilson Stadium and the Section 6 finals. It makes sense... the best teams obviously have the best players. While a losing record did disqualify any player from being recognized as one of the best players in Western New York, players certainly got noticed when their teams won more games Big Games: Big regular season games and playoff games carried more weight than other games. Big players deliver in big games. 5. Behavior Counts: Players who were suspended for behavioral reasons were not eligible for our post-season honors. The best players should carry themselves with some sense of dignity. Players who were discipline problems for their teams or their schools were not recognized at all. Behavior counts kids... behavior counts more than winning football games. 6. Grades Count: Most of these players are superior students... or at least good students. A few struggle with academics but they try hard. Players who were academically suspended because of outright laziness were not eligible for the team. If you canʼt give half an effort in S E C T I O N 6 All In Football Upstate W E E K L Y The Family November 18, 2011 Issue No Pages Player Year Of The Sweet Home s Jordan Johnson leads Panthers to their 5th Straight Title Southwestern s Jay Sirianni is Coach of the Year the classroom, we will not reward you with post-season honors. All-Star Teams Announced by WNY Teams Southwestern, Orchard Park get to Dome Unsung Heroes Lead Frannies to MMA Title PLUS: State Records Team Reports NYS Rankings Schedules ALSO: Sideline Chatter Extra Point Section 6 Standings 7. One Per Customer: Many all-star teams will list players at multiple positions. For the All-Football Weekly team, each player is listed once. If a lineman is named a 1stteam offensive lineman, he is not eligible to be recognized as a 2ndteam linebacker. Sweet Home QB Jordan Johnson is our Player of the Year and, therefore, is not eligible to be listed at a position. 8. Attitude Counts: Players that were guilty of poor sportsmanship were downgraded. We may not throw them off the team, but our best players do not taunt opposing players or get into obscene screaming matches. The best know they are the best and they act like it. 9., All-League INSIDE: Teams: Each League in WNY submitted an All-League team as chosen by the coaches. Also, each coach in Western New York was asked to nominate players for a catagory that we call Super Seniors. These are players that have given everything they have to their programs. These kids may not be all-stars, but they are all good kids who gave everything they possibly could for the betterment of their teams. We wanted to salute them one final time... and thank them for putting on a great show for all of us fans out here.
