BOSCH TALK Can it get any tougher than this? The scorecard on Sunday morning, after we had played yet another rugby powerhouse, did not make for good reading. But, when you are part of the Premier A league in the Western Cape, you will have to deal with days like these. You just have to absorb what was dished out, appreciate their talent, get perspective and regroup as quickly as possible. I saw teams on Saturday that gave their best, despite the quality of the opposition. I saw teams fighting until the final whistle blew, despite being way down on the scoreboard. I also saw the 1 st XV captain doing the jersey hand-over for the U14D side before their match. Those are all special moments that reflect the true Bosch character.

It is vital for all of our teams to refocus and prepare well for this coming weekend. It is a critical away fixture against Hoërskool Stellenberg and it will definitely not be easy. This might be one of the most important fixtures of the season for us because we don t only go there to protect our proud traditions and many decades of rugby history, but we also have to fight hard and secure our future. Hoërskool Stellenberg has been knocking on the door, for quite a while, to play in the Premier A league and they believe that they can beat any boys school in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. The message for this coming weekend is simple: Go out there, stay in the moment and make yourselves and Rondebosch proud! 11 U19A RBHS 7 PAARL BOYS HIGH 73 We knew that after a disappointing finish to Bellville we would need to really step up against, arguably, the strongest school boy team in the world. Once again, we spent the Monday after Bellville finding solutions with the leadership group and we came away feeling positive. Strangely, I don t believe we felt any negative pressure in the build up to Boishaai but rather an excitement about what we could do. On the Tuesday, Bosch legend Justin Melk paid us a visit. He spoke about the love and passion he has for the breakdown and what it means to do the little things, which no one else notices, in order for your mates to succeed around you. Justin spoke with such passion about what I call without the ball game. This is everything that happens when you don t have the ball in your hands and, therefore, are not the centre of attention. I believe that learning to be fully committed to this aspect of the game is another key lesson that rugby teaches you in preparation for life. It is something I think that we can really work on as part of improving our culture at Bosch. So it was fantastic to have Justin s input on this area, both in the change room and on the field, in our Tuesday breakdown session. We set specific process goals for this game as one of our issues, that the leaders identified, is that we are too scoreboard focused. As one brilliant mental coach explained to me, how sad it is to practice all week for only the seventieth minute! We decided to go out there and celebrate and enjoy every time we achieved a process goal or did something positive. Credit must go to the boys who never stopped trying right to the end, which is much easier said than done. Unfortunately, other than Seth Christian s brilliant try at the end, after a really good build up on attack, there were not too many of these moments that we could celebrate.

I was impressed that the breakdown was one of the few areas where, against the best school boy team in the world, we showed some serious improvement; although we are still a long way from finished. We also managed to steal some lineouts and largely disrupt their unstoppable maul. And, in moments, we threatened on attack and pressured them in defence; but these moments were too few and far between. For most of the match we made back to back errors on both attack and defence that Boishaai just murdered us on. They were brilliant and we were not. Although, we did have two judged forward passes just metres from the tryline, as well as two knock ons when we were closing in on their line, which may have painted a slightly less disastrous picture. We now face another super school in Stellenberg, who have determinedly worked their way into the top hierarchy of rugby schools. They boast about half of their team in the current group of Craven week players and recently went to the Wildeklawer top schools festival where they smashed HTS Middelburg and drew to Dr EG Jansen!

Once again, the Bosch boys remain positive and excited to see where they can improve and who they can surprise. It is a credit to the boys for continually standing up and fighting. As it is to every boy that takes the rugby fields every Saturday morning to stand next to his Bosch brother and fight. Don t forget to give them that credit amid our desire to always be the winner. I have heard comments that Bosch Rugby is in a crisis. While I would not describe it as that, I would say that we are at an important crossroads that has been coming for a while. Some key decisions need to be made if we are to honour our 120 year heritage. Thanks for the continual support. TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Seth Christian Hugo Minnaar

U19B (Soldiers) RBHS 3 PAARL BOYS HIGH 77 After a drubbing by, arguably, the best rugby school in the country, if not in the southern hemisphere, it serves no purpose to lay the blame on the captain, team, individuals or coaches. Let s be totally honest and concede that we were given a rugby lesson by a bigger and better team that played beautiful rugby - keeping the ball alive, running hard and displaying incredible skills. Yes, there were missed tackles by the Soldiers. There were unnecessary kicks, giving away possession and far too many handling errors. Yet, there wa s a period in the first half when Bosch dominated play with hard running by Dylan Pienaar (13), Thomas Oliver (14), Matt Ginsberg (2), David Ige (3) and Ra ees Sallie (5) as well as excellent tackling and rucking by David Redelinghuys (6). The score was 15-3 in Paarl s favour and they were held at bay for 10 minutes before the floodgates opened and they ran in try after try. Ginsberg played a true captain s innings and led from the front, taking on the much bigger opposition. Ryan Leatherby, the smallest man on the field, took on the giants from Paarl and never hesitated to bring them to ground. The Soldiers now need to regroup and to, (in the words of an old Frank Sinatra hit from long before any of them were born), pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again TOP GUN (MAN OF THE MATCH): Ryan Leatherby JOHANN GERBER

U19C RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 67 The boys were very excited to take on a strong Paarl Boys High side on Rugby A this Saturday. They started well putting copious amounts of pressure on their opposition for the first 10 to 15 minutes of the first half. Paarl Boys managed to withstand the pressure and keep the boys scoreless. Two quick tries in the twentieth minute saw the team from Paarl go up 14-0, which led to a slight shock in the Rondebosch boys. This added pressure, of playing catch-up coupled with handling errors and a poor defensive effort, resulted in the boys from Paarl dictating the game. They played some scintillating rugby for the entirety of the match, which caused the game to end in a very disappointing result of 67-0 in their favour. It must be said that throughout the tough 70 minute onslaught, the likes of Reece Van Eden, Caleb Starr and Troy Fisher were among the stand out performers of the day. No matter how tough the circumstances got, these boys kept working all the way through to the final whistle, which is something to be commended. GARTH QUAITE

U19D RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 53 The 4 th team arrived early on Saturday expecting a tough battle and they were not disappointed. Due to the substantial and farreaching injuries at Bosch we were unable to have contested scrums, which perhaps allowed us to enjoy a more stable setpiece on attack. The team struggled to string multiple phases together due to a lack of intensity at ruck time and a number of unforced handling errors. Despite this, the team put up a massive fight in the first half with strong runs and big tackles by Robbie Lailvaux, James Grant and Francois Harley, in particular. Boys High was limited to only three tries in the first half, which were due to our mistakes in key areas of the field. However, the half time break saw a wave of determination emerge that was short-lived as the team dropped their heads and let the floodgates open after conceding an early try. It was clear that self belief was lacking when the pressure was on. So there will be a great focus on this mental sphere in the weeks to come. Ultimately, this substantial loss (including the loss against Gim) has highlighted our weak points as being basic hands, basic tackling technique and intensity at ruck time. These negatives will be our focus in the weeks to come in the hope that we can produce a positive outcome from these tough learning experiences. MAN OF THE MATCH: Robbie Lailvaux CHRIS NEWBY

U16A RBHS 12 PAARL BOYS HIGH 45 With nothing to lose, the U16A boys took on their opponents with great spirit and determination. Brave defence eventually gave way to the visitors first try. Bouncing back was key and Bosch struck back right away: Jake Tredoux took the kickoff and beat a number of defenders to dot down in the corner. Paarl scored a second before Dalvon Blood pounced on a loose ball to sprint 60 metres and dot down under the poles. Twelve all, moments before half time, represented a great effort by the Bosch boys; but the constant pressure led to a turnover just before half time and a try that took the score to With a few boys on the injured list, the further loss of Campbell Slater, to a knee injury late in the first half, left a patched up scrum creaking and the Paarl pack started dominating. While Bosch did well in the lineouts it became a tough second period. The Paarl side scored five second half tries to eventually seal an emphatic win. A few positives came from the game, but the injury count is starting to mount. Some tough matches coming up provide new players the opportunity to fight for starting spots in the future. 25 U16B (Bears) RBHS 22 PAARL BOYS HIGH 35 With, undoubtedly, the top rugby school in the country visiting, the lads knew it was going to take a monumental effort, by all 15 players, to match the physical, skilful and more-fancied Paarl Boys High team. The past two weeks saw a massive emphasis being placed on skills, tackle technique and basic structure off 9 and 10. The Bears, however, took to the field knowing that anything short of their physical best would lead to a long day at the office. It was clear from the kickoff that the Bears meant business, as the lads were flying into any blue and white striped jersey that came their way. Newly selected Jonathan Swanepoel, by far the smallest on the park (playing open side flanker!), set the tone with some textbook tackles that surprised and knocked a few of the visitors backwards. With Bosch matching Boys High in most collisions, and dominating possession throughout the first half, it was baffling and extremely frustrating to be trailing 21-0 at the interval. Unfortunately, some poor kicking, over-folding on defence and a lack of concentration saw Boys High score three unanswered tries against the run of play. The traditional backs and forwards split at the half time team talk may have been the catalyst for what transpired in the second half. Whilst the forwards were urged to keep fronting up physically; it was Mr Edwards who aborted the kicking game plan and encouraged the backs to run at the visitors and test the tiring Boys High defence a bit more. The second half saw the Bears play their best 30 minutes of the year. Off the kick off, the backs ran straight back at Boys High and after some glorious interplay between the backs and forwards, and some great maturity and patience, flyhalf, Matthew Dalrymple, got Bosch on the scorecard with a clever pick and go try. This lifted the Bears spirits and the momentum shift was clearly rattling the visitors.

Up next was, arguably, the highlight of the season thus far. With a lineout five metres from the Boys High line, after some sustained pressure, the Bears called a lineout move that would see John Caine crash over for his first try at Rondebosch. The celebrations that ensued, which saw all 15 Bears surround Caine hugging him in jubilation, were indeed a special moment. Fayyad Galiem and Aidan Rooke added two more tries - again after some pretty impressive interplay between the backs and the forwards. Unfortunately, the Bears struggled to convert their tries and were also unable to finish off a few more clear opportunities, which meant that the five tries to four contest ended in favour of Boys High. Whilst the Bears are weary of commiserating a loss, and being too excited about merely running powerful team s close, the performance, the fight-back and the never say die physical approach must be celebrated. Winning the second half is a positive that can t be ignored. Some great lessons were learnt, and the belief in the Bears ranks is now at an all time high. As coaches we could not have asked the boys for any more than what they gave on Saturday. Well done! JOSH CAREW

U16C RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 42 Paarl Boys High is always seen as a big challenge for the boys. Coming off of a bye, the team knew that they would have to put a huge effort in during the week to prepare themselves for the weekend. After a massive week of hard work on the training ground, the mighty U16C team came up against the lads from Paarl. Unfortunately, the first half was definitely not the performance that the team was looking for. We went into the break trailing 28-0 as Paarl Boys High punished us for any lapses in concentration. After a stern talking to at half time, a completely different side appeared for the second half. After letting in two early tries, the team finally started believing that they were good enough. This ensured that the Bosch boys completely dominated the last 20 minutes, with some rumbling forward play and some huge defence from the backline. In particular, recognition must be given to Aadam Mowlana who delivered a real body on the line performance. As coaches we are very proud of the fight back shown by the boys. Hopefully, all involved will have learnt that they are more than good enough to beat these infamous sides. We look forward to the rest of the season, knowing that with hard work and self belief the mighty U16Cs will roar once again. JORICH LOUBSER

U15A RBHS 7 PAARL BOYS HIGH 33 It is always tough preparing to face a colossus of schoolboy rugby, especially with Bieber fever striking in the middle of the week. One always feels like you need to do more, say more and cover everything. However, a decision was made to save the intensity and physicality for when it matters most, on match day. On Saturday 20 May, the Rondebosch U15A team faced Paarl Boys High School on Meadow B at Rondebosch. A change in the order of the components of our warm up saw us take to the field with real intensity and excitement. After a strong start to the game, and a couple of brutal physical exchanges, Paarl Boys capitalised on a missed touch kick and a few slipped tackles to open the scoring at 7-0. Another try shortly thereafter, once again as a result of an error - this time a pass not quite going to hand in a forward pod of nine - meant that Paarl ran in another seven pointer to take a healthy 14-0 lead. At this stage in the first half a real test of character was imposed on the Rondebosch U15A side. The reason for that was that they had matched them physically in the contact situation, but had made errors which lead to an early, flattering 14 point lead. We fought back valiantly and put together great passages of attacking play, which saw interchanging with backs and forwards, to put the Paarl defence under real pressure. A brilliant kick by Cameron Van Rensburg trapped Paarl deep in their 22 metre area. Defending the Paarl maul and placing pressure on their exit meant that we capitalised on a charged down kick for Callum Whitson to score under the poles.

The game plan during our week s preparation was to put enormous pressure on Paarl with massive line speed on defence. We also wanted to play rugby in their half to compound this pressure and thus would try to kick the ball in behind them or kick contestable kicks in order to do so. On the whole we managed to achieve all of those objectives and even exceeded our expectations with some promising attacking and counterattacking play. A soft try, just after half time, once again due to Paarl capitalising on our mistakes, effectively ended all hopes of us winning the game. There were real encouraging signs for the U15A coaches. A case in point was late in the second half when two substitutes, fringe A team players, namely, Oscar Bonnes and Jonathan Sands, linked up in the backline with some of the other A team boys to run nearly 70 metres out of our 22 metre area in a wonderful display of skill. Unfortunately, as was the theme for most of the match Paarl turned the ball over and scored a long range try against the run of play, yet again. Paarl ran out deserved winners as the final score read 33-7 in a fiercely contested match. The U15A team is starting to settle in terms of selection and understanding of the structure. Set pieces, especially our scrum are starting to tighten up and match any one of our opposition in the league. Some defensive organisation work, more skills work in terms of handling and straight running, will go a long way in moving this side forward as we approach the final stretch of the term two fixtures. There were two challenges posed to the U15A team after the match. Firstly, they were challenged to get up for every single game like they did for Paarl and secondly, to bring a real hunger to learn and improve at practice each week. Thank you to all of the staff, coaches, parents and boys for all of your support. TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Callum Whitson Kian Davis JACO ZEEMAN

U15B RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 50 After a good week of training the boys were keen to test their ability against the best: Paarl Boys High. We made a shaky start to the match and conceded two tries in the first eight minutes. We couldn t hold onto the ball for more than five phases and, although we visited the opposition half a few times, our attack never amounted to much. A lack of defensive discipline, communication and missed tackles meant that our line was penetrated at will by Paarl, who scored with ease - regularly. Perhaps the one thing that we improved on during the match was our ability to count (in multiples of seven). We take this as a learning opportunity and will be looking to improve in our next fixture, fixing our weaknesses and building on our strengths. Our major areas of focus will be communication and spacing on defence and catch up defenders. Our main focus on attack will be clean ball resulting from effective rucking, and straightening the line when running. MICHAEL PALFRAMAN U15C RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 51 The boys did a lot of hard work at training, throughout the week, in preparation for the big fixture on Saturday 20 May. Unfortunately, with last minute flu symptoms, we struggled, losing four of our starting line up players. The replacements fought bravely and yet another first half fight kept the score to 12-0 at the break. In the second half the boys switched off and the tries started pouring in - unlike the rain! The huge victory though is the improvement by each individual. Soon the team work will make the dream work! WHALEED WILLIAMS

U15D RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 42 On Saturday 20 May, the boys were amped, excited and ready for the game. They fought bravely and stood tall. Unfortunately, an intercept try put the boys on the back foot. They were 10-0 down at half time. The boys dominated the second half, coming close to scoring on three occasions, but silly unforced errors were the downfall on the day. The boys really impressed themselves with how they managed to keep improving and their making first time tackles. WHALEED WILLIAMS

U14A RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 36 The boys stood in the post-match circle with heads held high. They had taken on, arguably, one of the top rugby schools in the country and stepped out of the arena with pride intact. It was a very physical encounter and the boys manfully stuck to the game plan of holding on to possession. Coach, Clinton van Rensburg, praised his charges but stressed the need for the boys to believe that they are good enough to mix it up with the best. The final score-line, of 36-0, suggests a one-sided contest; this certainly was not the case. The boys played to the final whistle and left nothing on the field. A defensive error out wide and a midfield lapse of concentration led to early PBH tries, On half time, we conceded a third try from a tighthead on our line, In the second half, we put Paarl Boys under significant pressure with our pack taking the fight to the opposition. Daniel Kalell had their defence at sixes and sevens with a number of barnstorming runs. John Vermaak marshalled the backs nicely and we split their defence twice with enterprising play. Handling errors, however, saw us unable to finish and convert pressure into points. As a team, we are still conceding too many turnovers. In total we handed Paarl Boys 14 opportunities to attack, through not finding touch and turnover of possession. Furthermore, we lost a crucial lineout five metres out from their line. Any top side will punish you if you don t value your possession. Players are realising also that, in any game, there are key moments to recognise and exploit. The boys are on a steep learning curve and we believe that we are on the right track. We simply have to minimise our mistakes, learn, grow and get stronger as a team. We look forward to travelling to Stellenberg knowing that we are in for yet another very tough encounter. NEIL TEUBES

U14B RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 69 On a stunning day for rugby the boys from Paarl met our local lads. After a week of disruptions the teams were finally selected late on Friday. Coach, Hilio De Abreu, did his best to get the boys ready for the game and we knew that we needed to be 150% better than last week. Bosch played the game mostly defending the big runners. Eventually, after solid defence, the manne from Paarl scored. Our set-piece scrum was very good and the pack deserve a lot of praise for fronting up in that department. Half time arrived and some changes were made in personnel. In the second half we, again, struggled to get any ball to attack. When we did in the backline, yards were made with Michael Stronach running hard and being well supported by Kamva Makhasi in the pack. It was a tough day at the office for the boys. To their credit they never looked like giving up and always tried to stay in the match. Next week we travel to Stellenberg. This will be my last week with the boys as I am moving on to the corporate world. I want to thank each and every one of them for being true gents and look forward to watching them play on Rugby A in the future. Remember boys, never give up and always have FUN! See you on the sidelines. WAYNE JACKSON

U14C RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH U14D 46 From the kick off we conceded two quick penalties and, from a lineout in our 22m, Boishaai scored an early try. Bosch rallied and put a few phases together, however, our attack lacked directness and we struggled to break through the Paarl defensive line. While our defence was better than it had been against Gim, we consistently conceded soft tries in the first half. The team did show some character in the second half and I do believe that there is real potential within the side. If we can tidy up our work at ruck time and start to run a bit straighter and a bit harder I am positive that we can start to turn our results around. I would like to make special mention of Man of the Match, Daniel Martin, who came off the reserve bench, was probably the smallest man on the field and didn t stand back for anyone. His excellent work in the second half was so nearly rewarded with a try that would have been very well deserved. DAVID VAN DER LINDE U14D RBHS 0 PAARL BOYS HIGH 22 The mighty Bosch U14D team went down 22-0 to a very strong and well-drilled Paarl Boys High side. Our boys in blue and gold showed massive heart, tackling low and hard and not standing back from their opposition. At the end of the day, Paarl was just too good - sucking in defenders by grinding it up with the forwards and then releasing their lethal backs. A special mention must be made to the D side for not giving up and putting in a huge second half performance - they only let Boys High cross the white wash once! Although we have lots to work on, I was very happy with the lads performance and the way that they fronted up. JAMIE KING

SPORT, COMPETING, RANKINGS & SUPERBRU Gustaf Pienaar: Deputy Headmaster - Sport Why does Rondebosch offer sport? The answer could easily be found in our school s Sports Policy. RBHS SPORT PHILOSOPHY - Play for the sport, not the game 1. We play sport as part of the overall educational product that a boy will experience at RBHS. 2. We approach the game to WIN by: a. playing better than the opposition; b. preparing ourselves as best as we can; c. having the best coaching structures and coaches; d. playing within the rules/laws governing the game. We do not tolerate gamesmanship or unsportsmanlike behaviour. 3. To win at all costs must never be part of sport at RBHS. To state that as a philosophy might sound wonderful, but sport is by a competitive thing, and boys are competitive by nature, so how does the school measure if we competed successfully? After all, Rondebosch often have teams ranked as amongst the top in the country, while some sports at times find themselves not ranked in the same bracket. Does that mean that some sports are successful while others are failures? One of our most successful and celebrated Old Boy sports celebrities, Gary Kirsten, sums it up best when he says that one should shift one s success metrics away from win/loss ratios and ranking systems towards a value system: This value system or philosophy is non-negotiable regardless of the win/loss or rankings column. This does not mean RBHS stops becoming competitive. In fact, I would argue the opposite. A sustainable and long lasting high performance sporting programme based on a non-negotiable sport philosophy, in my opinion, would help develop, a more rounded holistic individual. It will also impact many more schoolboys, rather than just the most talented.

What are the values that our sports philosophy and people like Gary Kirsten believe sport at Rondebosch should add to our boys? What value systems will make successful adults, and successful sportsmen? Here are just a few of them: Compete while giving of your best and not give up. Teaching leadership skills - learning how to make good decision and get the best out of people. Learn how to play for others and be part of a bigger picture as a member of your team. Experiential learning - encouraging an environment of truly expressing skills by taking risks and making mistakes even if it leads to a defeat. Learning how to celebrate success humbly. Learning how to accept defeat as a crucial part of growth and learning. Understanding the value of strong opponents to bring out the best in me Respecting officials and decisions made in competition Every year, as some stage during a sports season, the topic of National ranking list come up usually with a lot of controversy amongst some players and supporters, and often to the detriment of the team. Apart from the many obvious flaws in such rankings, I want to make it very clear that Rondebosch Boys High School does not support the principle of these ranking list, nor does the school make decisions for our sports and the boys playing the sport, for the sake of National ranking lists. The obsession with rankings is counterproductive to any educationally sound sports program. The bottom line of any such a list, is that it has the same value as being at the top of the leader board in your SuperBru group. It does not prove anything, and only serves as good banter amongst friends around the braai it gives one some bragging rights. It should be seen in the same light as someone who pays you a compliment they recognise your good efforts, say thank you, and move on. Don t let it go to your head.

We have learned over the several years of these lists, that whenever boys, parents, or supporters started taking these rankings (in any sport) seriously, those teams tended to lose focus and then did not perform to their real ability. They start to compromise their values for the sake of a ranking. The real focus of any team is to concentrate on the next match and the values that they hold dear. I want to appeal to all our parents and supporters that should you hear your sons or anyone else get involved in serious discussions about these ranking lists, to please add a bit of sensibility to the conversation and ask them how their SuperBru is doing?
