BOSCH TALK On Saturday afternoon, it was a good feeling to drive home from Wynberg Boys High School having taken the honours on the day, after yet another tough derby away from home. But, as expected, it was not easy. All 17 matches were fiercely contested and eight of the matches ended with a score line of 10 points or less. Winning the majority of the matches on the day, with the 1 st XV victory as a nice cherry on the top, made it a successful outing. However, the way the Bosch teams played the game (although not perfect), was more important. The hard work during the week clearly paid dividends and many positive comments were made next to the fields during the lead up to the derby. Our U15As, U16As and the seconds were all desperately unlucky. In all of these matches the result could have gone either way. The U16As lost the game in the last minute after leading the entire match. The 1 st XV battled hard in the first half, but was able to adapt their game plan, with a mature and more intelligent approach in the second half, to secure a well-deserved victory.

Where should our focus be for the last two weeks of the season? Clint van Rensburg, head of coaching, hit the nail on the head with the following comment: Wynberg seemed to be more motivated, hungrier and more ready to win the mini battles during the matches. Their boys seemed to want it more. We don t need to change our mentality, but we need to start celebrating the big hits, start craving a fighting spirit by standing our ground and by not giving an inch when it comes to who wants it more. Our boys need to know it is not about winning or losing, but about fronting up and making sure they don t give the perception that Bosch boys are soft targets. Herein lies a valuable lesson in life for standing your ground and earning your respect in the world out there.

Let s focus on our preparation to engage the fighting spirit amongst our boys and make the opposition understand what is at stake in terms of manning up when it counts. The laurels of the southern suburbs are now up for grabs and the cat is loose amongst the pigeons with Bishops victorious against SACS. There is now all to play for in the last two matches of the season. For our Matric boys, this coming Saturday against SACS will be their last outing on Rugby A. The visitors will come and try to scar our proud name. The message is simple: Go out there and make it something special to treasure for a long time and for all of the right reasons. 9 U19A RBHS 23 WBHS 17 We were well aware of how hungry and dangerous Wynberg was going to be. They are always very tough, especially at home. Add to that coming off a huge victory over Boland Landbou and they had every reason to be fired up as they took the field to the sound of bagpipes playing! For the first couple of minutes we played smart rugby to pin them deep in their half. Credit to Wynberg, their lineout operated quite well and they executed effectively from close to their tryline. We did get a shot at three points, after four minutes, when they collapsed a really good maul that we got going; but the shot was just wide. We continued to play pretty intelligent rugby and were spending most of our time on their side of the half way; but our own errors cost us the much needed momentum to really make our territory count. Then we got a tighthead off their scrum and DJ Falconer carried strongly up field and from that breakdown they went offside. This time Samuel Cragg slotted the three points. From the kick off we received well and contested a well-placed box kick from Robbie Davis to get deep into their half. We displayed some good phase play before being penalised for not releasing the ball in a tackle before continuing to run. Not long after, however, from a Wynberg error and resultant scrum, we attacked effectively down the blind and held possession for a number of phases. Again we were rewarded with a penalty and chose to bank the three points. We were not in complete control but we were definitely dictating more of the rugby. However, after two silly penalties Wynberg ended up with a lineout five metres from our tryline. The players were well aware of their tactics from here and defended the maul well. Then a slip in concentration allowed their flank to run in a try from the back of the collapsed maul. Soon after, the half time whistle blew and we were still leading 6-5.

For me, the frustration at this point was just that I felt we were going through the motions. I did not see enough fire and desire in the Bosch boys and I felt Wynberg was there for the taking. We did come out in the second half and up the energy; but not before Wynberg scored an easy try off one of their scrums that resulted from a silly infringement. Again our set piece defence let us down and is something we are constantly working on. Suddenly, Wynberg was leading 12-6; but there was certainly no panic at this point. We continued to put some decent phases together and show good patience, only for a forced offload or silly error to let us down. Eventually, off a stolen lineout ball Davis put Ross Roode into a bit of space down the blind side. However, from 50 metres out, and with defenders swarming him, he had a lot to do, he went inside outside, used a hand off and then gassed the Wynberg pacy fullback to score a brilliant try. Cragg converted from in front and we had the lead at We knew we really needed to bank this and score next.

From the kick off we caught and set a dynamic maul, notwithstanding them coming in from the side and collapsing it. We got nothing from the referee and then forced a forward pass to give them a scrum deep in our half. From their scrum play their 9 kicked and Cal Smid made his second charge down of the day, this time retrieving it and making good ground. We, again, were rewarded with a penalty when Wynberg infringed and got our try banked but only with a three pointer by Cragg. We really played well off their kick off and very nearly got a try - only for Zaka Sallie to be tackled brilliantly by their fullback and then get penalised correctly for not releasing. We managed to turn over possession again. After a number of phases, Van Der Bijl Blake put a kick through in that they charged down; but it fell straight back into his hands. He sucked in two defenders and offloaded to Sallie who, this time, made sure he got to the white wash. Cragg put it over from in front and we had it at Again, we needed to score again to put it out of reach. We, again, took the kick off well but again forced an unnecessary offload. From this turnover Wynberg pounced to score. The conversion was crucially missed leaving the score at We executed two great mauls to set up a penalty to take the game away. Cragg pushed it just wide and the Wynberg flyhalf put in a huge clearance, which we knocked on. This gave Wynberg one last shot from their scrum play. However, the determined Bosch boys rallied together and held strong on defence to hold them up in the tackle and get the turnover. From here, deep in our half we, very impressively, played phase after phase with Davis asking at each ruck, Is it time up, Sir? To which the referee replied There is enough time. This went on for eight phases before he replied, Time s up! Robbie duly kicked it out. It was an impressive display of composure from all of the players.

I was very proud of the lads and they deserve to feel very satisfied with another good win. However, I still feel our best is yet to come, not on the scoreboard but in the way we play. With a strong SACS side waiting, and now hurting after being thumped by Bishops, it certainly is time for us to enjoy our full potential. 19 U19B (SOLDIERS) RBHS 7 WBHS 11 Derby day against Wynberg is always a tough encounter that the boys look forward to. This was no different, as leading up to the big clash, the Soldiers had probably had their best week of training of the whole year. Having put a lot of emphasis on the contact, breakdown and defensive areas of the game, the Soldiers were keen to put in a strong performance. However, Wynberg came out of the blocks firing. It was the Soldiers who were caught napping and eight points down before they realised what hit them. After numerous squandered opportunities deep within Wynberg territory, the Soldiers trailed 8-0 in a half that was dominated by Wynberg physicality and Bosch not taking their chances.

After some stern words at half time, the Soldiers seemed rejuvenated and determined to turn their fate around. However, again Wynberg struck first with an offside penalty to take a commanding 11-0 lead. The next 25 minutes of the match saw the Soldiers proceed with wave after wave of attack, only to be stopped centimetres short of the Wynberg tryline on numerous occasions. With six minutes to go, the Soldiers were rewarded for their efforts as Keegan Collier finished off a well-worked backline move to bring the Soldiers within one more score of a victory. This was not to be, as the Wynberg defence withheld the ongoing Bosch attempts at securing a victory. The Soldiers were brave and valiant in their efforts, but, unfortunately, their missed opportunities early in the game came back to haunt them as they went down 11-7 to the deserved home victors. Sport can be very cruel, as this is the fourth loss the Soldiers have experienced by four points or less this year! The Soldiers will continue fighting and working hard to finish the season strongly as they prepare for two more massive derby encounters. 23 U19C (DOGS) RBHS 22 WBHS 14 The Dogs were determined to take revenge on Wynberg for the last minute loss in the opening match of the season. They ran onto Silverhurst A with only one thought on their minds victory. Right from the kick off they set up camp in the Berg s red zone and, after five minutes, Jonny Murray (5) barged over for Hugo Minnaar (10) to add the extra points and establish a 7-0 lead. Five minutes later, Minnaar slotted over a penalty to stretch the lead to Shortly afterwards, Lorenzo Napoli (8) dotted down after another determined forward rush. The trusty boot of Minnaar did it again and, at 17-0, it looked as if nothing would stop the Dogs. Wynberg, however, recovered from the shock. They kept the Dogs out and sneaked in a score before the break to trail 17-7 at water bottle time. After the restart the Dogs defence was put to the test as the home side tried to save pride; but it was only after 17 minutes that they managed to breach the Bosch defence. Ten minutes from the end Murray sealed the win with a second try. At it was all over for the home side. This was a game won by the forwards. None worked harder then Ian Grant (6) whose phenomenal work rate in the tight loose laid the foundation for possession. Murray, Napoli and Luke Cammell (7) put in some strong runs. The substitutes, Luca di Giovanni and David Redelinghuys (both back from long lay-offs due to injury), had an immediate impact once they took the field, in the last 15 minutes, to continue the domination up front. In the backline Zuhair Dollie (15) put in some strong runs from the back, as well as a good hit or two. The midfield pairing of Michael King (12) and Kyle Smith (13) tackled well and made some strong line breaks too.

The Force came back and tried hard to get on the scoreboard but the hosts added another try, after eight minutes, to go further ahead at The Force continued to attack and was finally rewarded when Gino Ribeiro went over in the corner, mid way through the second half. Four minutes from the end, Wynberg added another try and at 20-5 their win was assured. Up front, James Grant (7) worked hard, while props Max Green and Lloyd Witten had a few strong runs, as did lock Cameron Dell. Captain, Chris Cloete (9), sent his line away well and Sam Alexander (12) tried hard. 25 U19E (FLYERS) RBHS 24 WBHS 0 The Triple Crown saga started with a bang, as the Flyers took on Wynberg in an away fixture that was always going to be an all out battle. Both teams were fired up and the majority of the first half saw neither side on the score board. The Flyers dominated the possession but a strong wall of defence made capitalising very difficult. Every player faced up on defence and tried every trick that we had on attack. Finally, the end of the first half saw us score the first try of the match, which was quickly followed by another. The Flyer s lineouts were faultless and we were clinical at the breakdown, which allowed us to retain ball and string together multiple phases. We went on to score two more tries, one intercept and another hot knife through the Wynberg defence. The final score was That s one victory down and two more to go for the Triple Crown. 26 U19F (STUNNERS) RBHS 25 WBHS 12 The Stunners invitational team pitched up on Saturday morning to prove a point and they most certainly did. They proved that through the pure enjoyment of the game, one can be victorious. The boys went down by 12 points to Wynberg in the first 15 minutes. After the boys started to get the hang of things, we opened up the game by scoring two quick tries. We went into half time drawing with our competitors. The second half was a battle of defence in which both teams did not want to let through tries. After persistent attacking by the Stunners we eventually got a penalty. The boys went up and from there they did not hold back. 27 U16A RBHS 7 WBHS 13 Derby matches are often closely contested affairs and this one was no different. The match went down to the wire with Wynberg scoring at the death to take the match away from us. Bosch started like a house on fire and controlled both the territory and the possession in the first half. We, arguably, played our best rugby of the season and the interplay between backs and forwards was out of the top drawer. After a period of sustained pressure, Thoubaan Gabriels scored out wide and Jordan Child slotted the conversion, to see Bosch take a well-deserved 7-0 lead. Wynberg hit back with a penalty just before half time. We gathered over water, leading 7-3, and felt confident about reversing the first round defeat we had suffered against Wynberg in April. Wynberg came back into the match through a penalty, after yet another Bosch infringement (7-6). Our indiscretions at the breakdown cost us dearly and, after yet another penalty, Wynberg were able to set up a lineout 5 metres out. From the rolling maul they scored and converted (13-7). Bosch had one final opportunity but it was not to be. It was a bitter pill to swallow as our team played some excellent rugby and, arguably, deserved a share of the spoils. We look forward to hosting a very strong SACS side at home. TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Thoubaan Gabriels Jordan Child NEIL TEUBES

U16B RBHS 31 WBHS 12 The U16B team faced another exciting challenge on their quest to a Grand Slam. Coming off the back of a bye weekend, and with two full weeks of preparation behind them, they put in a clinical display of rugby. The match started slowly for the Bosch boys as Wynberg dominated the early exchanges and would have opened the scoring very early on had it not been for fullback Caleb Starr s last-ditch tackle. This early pressure seemed to wake the boys up, however, as they fought their way back into the contest. First on the scoreboard was winger, Ismaeel Bakardien, who collected the ball in his own 22 and ran the length of the field to dot down between the Wynberg poles. Wynberg then responded with a try of their own. Just before the end of the half, Robbie Lailvaux dotted down for Bosch after a period of sustained pressure. The half time score was 12-7 in our favour. The second half was a much more open affair. Gareth Petersen displayed some great running early on to score his first of the match, to which Wynberg responded with their second try soon after. At to Rondebosch it looked as though we were in for a tight finish. However, the Busties pushed on into a higher gear and ran Wynberg ragged in the final 10 minutes. They scored a further two tries through Ammaar Andrews and a second by Gareth Petersen to widen the gap between the sides. 30 U16C (CHIEFS) RBHS 17 WBHS 24 I was truly proud of the performance and effort that the boys put in on Saturday. Although the result didn t go our way, considering the first game against Wynberg, which we lost 42-5, it is evident that these boys have improved tremendously and have truly developed as rugby players. The first half was a tight affair with possession continuously changing. Wynberg ran in the first try of the game and went up 7-0. Bosch replied a few minutes later and speedy flyhalf, Jeremy Owen, dazzled through a gap in their defence and cantered in under the sticks. Joshua Venter converted to even the scores. Wynberg scored their second and went up Once again, Bosch replied soon after and Ammaar Andrews produced the best offload of the season to put Jeremy Owen away for his second try. The score at half time was to Wynberg. At half time in our huddle, I could see that the boys were extremely determined and up for the contest. Bosch scored first in the second half with Josh van Rhyn using his brute strength to drive over the line from a pick-and-go movement. We continued to lead for most of the second half but, heartbreakingly, with about eight minutes left on the clock, Wynberg scored and converted, giving them a lead. The boys in blue and gold did not give up and gave their everything to steal a try at the death. Unfortunately, Wynberg were awarded a penalty and opted to go for poles. The kick was successful and extended their lead to Honourable mention must go to Lloyd Watermeyer and Matt Wilson who, as a flank pairing, were absolute terriers on the field. They made a nuisance of themselves at the breakdown and disrupted Wynberg countless times.

The errors that the boys made on Saturday were of the nature that they can be corrected at practice this week. The character that the boys showed once again amazed me! They continue to surprise and impress me with how much they have improved and how far they have come this season! 32 U15A RBHS 7 WBHS 17 When playing the local rivals, the return game is always doubly difficult if you have won the first outing. On Saturday, against Wynberg, this proved to be the case. A few late withdrawals saw a few late inclusions and positional changes that perhaps did not help, but at the end of the day did not have a bearing on the result. The first half was very tense with Bosch needing to defend very well. The Wynberg playmakers put their side into good positions with a neat tactical display putting our new back three combination under pressure. One chip over led to the opening try, which was converted to take Wynberg to a 10-0 half time lead.

Bosch now needed to respond and, after a period where we seemed to get a foothold into the game, we scored a try through a great run by Dalvon Blood. With the deficit cut to only three points it was game on. Brave attack was met by very tenacious defence. We had our opportunities with two lineouts just five metres from the tryline but, with both opportunities squandered, Wynberg intercepted a pass and ran 95 metres to score their own match-winning try. A lesson, perhaps, that scoring opportunities don t come by often in local derbies and that calm heads will need to prevail in similar situations in the future. TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Dalvon Blood Matthew MacLeod Smith PIETER BENADE

U15B RBHS 12 WBHS 10 A cold, cloudy morning and an 8am kick off ensured that we had a slippery start to our game. We did not control the ball well and had to defend for most of the first half. By and large, we defended exceptionally well, however, Wynberg punished our one defensive mistake and we were 7-0 down at half time. A try shortly after half time got the boys fired up and the measure of our defence was shown when Wynberg took the points on offer via a drop goal. It was a sign of how far this team has come that we continued to stay in the fight and defend strongly. From a tackle turnover Keegan Stewart gathered the loose ball, beat a defender and put on the afterburners to score under the poles. Wynberg attempted to steal the game late, but a penalty turnover by captain Kyle Klein in our own 22 ensured a win for RBHS. It was a much needed win, which will hopefully help us build into the final two games of the season. TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Ben Akin Brown, Keegan Stewart Matthew Dalrymple DAVID VAN DER LINDE

U15C RBHS 19 WBHS 12 The Castle stood firm, once again, this past weekend albeit not a very pretty performance. Maybe I tend to be hard on the boys, but we struggled to find rhythm in the game. There were a couple of late changes which had to be made to the starting line up, which disrupted the team slightly. On a more positive note, there were passages of play which really made us smile. Aidan Wittels s execution in the lineout was on point again, equally so were the jumpers timing and handling of the ball. On two occasions we saw wins against the hit in the scrum from pure Bosch strength. Our tryline defence was tried and tested over a lengthy onslaught from the Berg; but they battled and didn t breach us during that stage. Nur Salaam, who ended up being Man of the Match, continues to impress us, using his gunda-gunda legs to power through the tackle and bump off defenders at will. Gunda-gunda refers to the wheels of a tractor. Rhys McBeth fed him a superb flat ball as he ran a venomous second channel line inwards and brushed off two defenders to score close to the uprights. What a glorious sight!

We let the opposition back into the game through turnovers, not clearing past the ball and, at times, being selfish with the ball. But in the end we had done enough to hang on to another well fought victory. Luke Smith and Christian Bezuidenhout were Trojans, as always, as they made countless tackles and carries. Well done boys, only two battles left - let s make them count. TRIES: Nur Salaam, Rhys McBeth Jay Reiback CONVERSIONS: Rhys McBeth (2) JEREMY FOSTER U15D (DRAGONS) RBHS 17 WBHS 0 The Dragons came away with a nice victory over the weekend against rivals, Wynberg Boys High School. Conditions were wet underfoot from the early morning dew. Considering the conditions, I thought the boys did really well in terms of handing the ball. We shifted the ball coast to coast, managing to put some good phases together as well as gaining forward momentum; which is impressive for a team of this level. Both of our wings, Zack Bowman and Luqmaan Ryklief, crossed the white line, each getting a try in, as well as our outside centre, Tristan Bowden. This shows that good width and hands were utilised in the game. The boys played for each other and communicated well on defence not allowing the opposition to take any points in the match. Well done boys, great performance! TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Luqmaan Ryklief, Zack Bowman Tristan Bowden Derek Parfitt JEREMY FOSTER

U14A RBHS 10 WBHS 31 It was an exciting morning for the U14As as they took on their counterparts on the Wynberg 1 st XV field. With an eight o clock start, the field was always going to be quite dewy. These conditions proved to be difficult for us as we made many a handling error. The slippery ball, along with a fiery attitude on defence from Wynberg, meant that these errors continued throughout the game. Our decision making too was not up to scratch which ensured a very stop, start game. Picking up on all of our errors, Wynberg ran in six tries. On attack our structure was good and patience on the ball was decent. This allowed us to go through phases but often led to a lapse in concentration, which resulted in an error. It allowed us to put Wynberg under a little bit of pressure but not enough for us to be too dangerous. This paid off once for us with Cameron Van Rensburg dotting down just before half time. The errors continued in the second half and like our practices during the week the game became a very frustrating one. With such a high error rate we never really gave ourselves the opportunity to show our worth. HILIO DE ABREU

U14B RBHS 24 WBHS 38 On Saturday 13 August the Rondebosch U14B team made the short trip across to Wynberg Boys High School to play a determined and fiery Wynberg U14B team. With, arguably, one of our best selected teams of the entire season and after a lengthy layoff, the boys were all excited for this derby fixture. We started like a house on fire off the kick off. After turning the ball over and running some amazing forward pods, we were awarded a penalty as one of their boys did not roll away. William MacDonald kicked the ball into touch and we applied sustained pressure with our lineout maul and forward pods. The pressure eventually led to points as we managed to cross the whitewash for an unconverted try. The score read 5-0 to Rondebosch. Wynberg responded true to their school motto of "never give up". They slowly clawed their way back and started gaining momentum. The pendulum eventually swung in their favour and saw us make crucial errors in dangerous areas of the field - Wynberg capitalised on the plethora of errors that we made. Missed tackles, intercept passes and charged down kicks cost us three tries as we went into the half time break 24-5 down. The half time team talk focused on bettering our tackle success rate, accuracy of clean out at the breakdown and running with more width and purpose. In spite of some silly errors, we managed to oust Wynberg in the second half by 19 points to 14. The entire team was very disappointed to lose the match as we did not play with our usual consistency on the day and, by all accounts, probably are the better side. A special mention must go to Callum Whitson for his Man of the Match performance. He was all over Wynberg like a rash, dominating the tight loose exchanges and being a menacing presence on the park. Thank you to all the boys who gave of their best and to everyone who supported us. The U14B team will bounce back next weekend against SACS on the fortress, Lower Desert A. JACO ZEEMAN

U14C RBHS 44 WBHS 0 After a two week break with no matches, the boys were determined to get back to winning ways, which showed in the way they trained throughout the week. Intensity, focus and purpose were the correct words to describe practice this past week. When match day came the hunger to make it two in a row against rivals, Wynberg, was very evident. The boys got going from the first whistle, hitting every ruck and tackle hard and not giving the Wynberg boys any room. On attack we managed to retain the ball well and took it through phase after phase. It didn t take long for us to open the flood gates. After this we managed to run over five tries in the first half by running the ball wide, breaking the line and running it over on the next phase. The boys provided some very creative and entertaining rugby and credit must be given to them for never taking their foot off the pedal. In the second half, our defence was tested time and time again. However, the boys stood firm with an excellent defensive line, which they had been working on extremely hard in practice and, as a result of this, they managed to keep a clean sheet. On the counter attack the boys were relentless with our blitz fullback, Ross MacDonald, running over the full field to score his second try of the match. It has been awesome to see how this team has improved throughout the season. The improvement in their individual skills as well as teamwork has been phenomenal. As coaches we as are very proud of how far they have come. We are looking forward to a very important end to the season. Man of the Match was shared between Tate Haarhoff and Cameron Brooks but the whole team played extremely well. Go the Dragons! RYAN GRANT
