We had our annual pig roast, which for the most part was a success. I'd like to extend a great big thank-you to all those behind-the-scenes people who worked to make the roast a success. The food was fantastic, the decorations were great, and the pig races were a hit. Again, thank you. I'd also like to thank all the members who came to our event. It takes everyone to make the event a success. Moving on to the Car Show, which unfortunately wasn't quite so successful due to bad weather. We only had seven entrants with cars for the show and maybe double that for spectators. Ouch! Nonetheless, as always, members of our club stepped up and did a fantastic job setting up everything needed for the show. My personal thank-you to all of you for getting so involved. Our next event will be the Lobster Boil and Steak Fry, which is on September 6. Again, we will welcome any and all volunteers to help throughout the event, so if you re interested in being involved just let any bridge or board member know. We would greatly appreciate your time and energy. I'd like to hear from our membership with any suggestions for our end-of-the-season dinner in November. It won't be long before it's here, so please feel free to get involved and present any ideas. Kids Day is also coming up and we are in need of ideas and volunteers. The kids are the future of our club, so let s get creative and show them they re appreciated and give them a good time. All WWYC members and prospective members are encouraged to attend. Volunteers are needed to serve on the nominating committee to select a slate of candidates for the 2015 season. If you re interested in serving on the nominating committee or as an officer or director next season, please plan to attend or contact one of the current officers or board members. Self-nominations are welcome. Volunteers needed to serve in WWYC leadership positions The club needs people to fill the positions of Commodore, Secretary, and Treasurer, as well as two Directors. Officer positions are for a one-year term; Director positions are for a three-year term. If you re interested in serving the club on one of these roles or would just like to learn more about it, please contact Judie Jacobs. WWYC Kids Fishing Derby Last Chance! The annual WWYC Kids Fishing Derby began on Memorial Day weekend (Friday, May 23) and runs through Labor Day weekend (Monday, Sept 1). Rules are as follows: Contest is open to affiliated yacht club members and family, ages 15 and under; Fish must be caught on a hook in the harbors or on an official cruise and verified by a Wide-Waters member; Register length, type, weight if possible, kid s name, member s name, and a picture if possible; Awards for the Fishing Derby will be presented at the WWYC Kids Day on October 4. 3 Lobster Boil and Steak Fry Date: Saturday, September 6 Time: 5:00pm Location: Starved Rock Marina The annual Lobster Boil and Steak Fry is a favorite of many. Cook your own steak or lobster and enjoy a selection of several sides. After dinner, party down with live music from West MacQueen Street Band. Raffles and lobster races will round out the evening. BYOB. Tickets must be purchased in advance! Lobster dinner, $30; steak dinner, $15. See the flyer at the end of this newsletter for the order form. Lots of help is needed for this event. WWYC members are encouraged to help with setup (9:30am Saturday morning), during the event, and Sunday morning cleanup. Please contact Lynne Jones to volunteer or just show up! Website of the month Each month, we ll let you in on a useful website or smartphone app to use while cruising or just hanging out in the marina. In this issue, Jack Dare talks about the Active Captain website. If you have a favorite app or website that you d like to share with club members, send the info to me at lauradare@gmail.com Before taking off on a cruise, boaters can learn a lot by visiting activecaptain.com. Active Captain is an online boating community that you can join for free. Registering gets you access to view and contribute to the Active Captain Interactive Cruising Guides. The Cruising Guides are detailed navigation maps covered with markers that mark everything, including individual bridges, marinas, launch ramps, hazards and points of interest of all types. Active Captain members are encouraged to contribute reviews of all the marinas and points along the way, turning the charts into interactive resources rich with input from fellow boaters, their opinions, recent observations and experiences. Mobile versions for ios and Android are also available for use during your cruise, and map data can be downloaded for offline access when you are out of wi-fi or cellular range. 4 Meet the Bridge and Board In each issue this year, we ve profiled a member of the Bridge or Board. I hope you ve enjoyed getting to know your WWYC leadership. This is our final profile (last, but definitely not least!), featuring Judie Jacobs, Director. Tell us about your boat, Judie. I have a ' Gibson Houseboat (darling and for sale), named Aunt Judie. I chose the name because I am "Aunt Judie" to many. Originally, it was to be Witchcraft, because I was dating a man whom I met on Kids Day whilst wearing my witch outfit (a look to remember). I bought the boat shortly after meeting him and thought Witchcraft was appropriate; however, some family members thought the name was too close to Bitchcraft, thus Aunt Judie. Who s your crew? My crew has jumped ship including my cat Joey Jacobs, who used to come with me. I have since jumped ship as well. How long have you been boating? My boating life started sometime in the 60's - I was just a child. My friends and I rented cruisers and traveled around Lake Michigan. Then one of my many careers was that of a sales/assistant to the sales manager of Grebe Yacht Sales (no longer of course) in the 70 s. It was a company on the North Branch of the Chicago River, just west of Riverview Amusement Park. There probably isn't anyone around who would remember that or Grebe Yacht Sales, but I got to use the sales boats for my own pleasure, mostly sailboats, so we would pack up and sail around the Lake. At the same time I belonged to Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago and became crew of many cruising and racing sailboats. Then I moved to the suburbs and found the Illinois River. Well, there is more to that story another time. What was your first boat? My very first boat, which I still have, is a ' Chris Craft speedboat. No, I didn't buy it new. I got it from a man I met in a bar (surprise, surprise). He won it in a card game and wanted to get rid of it, enter me. What s your favorite WWYC event? I have always enjoyed the Pig Roast/Draw Down and, of course, Kids Day. What s your beverage of choice? Well, that really depends where I am and with whom; however, I am very fond of Grey Goose vodka martinis (no vermouth) and, of course, VO and a splash of water on the rocks. What has been your most memorable trip on the Illinois River? My most memorable trips on the Illinois were when my parents, sister, brother-in-law, kids and dogs traveled downriver. The first time we did it was in my parents newly purchased 36' Chris Craft Cruiser. We all fit, looking like the Clampetts from the Beverly Hillbillies. Then, my folks bought the "Bessie K, the Powers family's 50' Whitcraft houseboat. We were traveling in style then and would go to the Mississippi River every chance we got, cruising to Saint Louis or north to Hannibal, Missouri. Lots of fun, gas was cheap! What is your favorite spot in the Starved Rock pool? I like the area across the river by Starved Rock. It s sometimes tricky to get to, but worth it. What do you like to do when you re not boating? When I am not boating, I am an avid gardener. There s not much time between trips to the river to do much else. I manage to dine out, drink in, and read. 4

5 What s your vision for WWYC? I sincerely hope that WWYC will continue to be the hardworking club it is and has been, and that it will continue to offer the camaraderie and good will to all as it has done for 49 years. What else would you like for WWYC members to know about you? Things you may not know about me: I am retired now, but I worked for a major shopping center developer for many years, which took me all over the country working on new developments as well as established properties. I am a Master Gardener, Master Naturalist, and I serve as a Plan Commissioner as well as an Open Lands Commissioner for the Village of Orland Park. I like to read, cook, and draw. I shoot skeet, trap, and sporting clays not as much as I would like, though, because it s a summer/fall kind of sport, as least for me. I have traveled to exotic places like Africa, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and Hong Kong. I ve cruised the Mediterranean, and have been to France, England, Switzerland, Italy, Hawaii, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Ottawa, Illinois.
