1 October 2017 Address Cover: Parade, summer festival, photo Marilyn Smith Volume 20, Issue 3 PARADISE LAKE ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER Case Study of Pond Efficacy in Petoskey Michigan Conducted by U of M Bio Station students for Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council Best Management Practices: Sediment Ponds Purpose: to give sediment time to settle out of water flowing into a natural body of water and prevent spread of pollutants. Project Design: this experiment analyzes the composition of water, sediment, cattails and algae in 3 locations, using a variety of techniques to determine efficacy of Petoskey sediment pond. Goals: Mercury analysis: Determine mercury content present and where concentrated. Volatile organics analysis: determine which volatile organics were reduced by the sediment pond and to what extent. Sampling conditions: Data was gathered on from 9:30 to 11 am during light rain (0.18 ), temperature high of 51 and low of 39 degrees F. Method: Water sampling in 3 locations 1) inflow, 2) pond, 3) out flow Method: Algae collection, used forceps and placed in centrifuge tubes. 1) Inflow taken from wall of inflow pipe, 2)pond taken from rocks and 3) outflow taken from artificial turf mat. Method: Cattail collection, living cattails collected by hand at base of stalks and leaf shoots. Collected from a single plant at 1) inflow, 2) center of pond and 3) outflow. They were scanned for traces of gasoline. Results: Volatile analysis results from study show traces of gasoline in cattails with peaks of octane and heptanes in the chromatogram of the cattails. Conclusion: Gasoline compounds were found in the cattails in the pond. These plants help filter out the gasoline entering the pond through storm water. Trends among the water sample data also show less heavy metals are leaving the pond than entering it. Thanks to Dr. Steve Batemen, Tim Veverica, Kate Hogan, Chase Stone, Matt Clauchery from TOMWC, Shane Gallagher, Mikaela Bradley, Haley Divis, Ashley Mark and Erin Rodewald for their input into the study. Editor Note: This study may help you rethink your dedication to preserving part of the cattails as well as other vegetation on or near your shoreline. Isn t our goal to keep pollutants out of our water?? 2 PLA 2017 ACTIVITIES Saturday a.m. CBCW Jan 21 Ice Fishing Tournament June 10 Spring Bike Tour July 01 A Summer Day in Paradise Aug 05 Boating Safety Class August 6 Annual Meeting Sept 16 Fall Bike tour PLA OFFICERS President: Greg Torsky Vice President: Donna Karbowski Treasurer: Barry Potter Secretary: Jolene Michaels Past President: Mary Lu Norton Trustees: Terry Burge, Mike Madden, Mary Lu Norton, Jim Pauling Seasonal Trustees: George Bearden, Dale Berry, Dick Elliott, Paul Karbowski 2017 PLA BOARD MEETING DATES Members & Public Welcome January 3 February 7 May 2 June 6 July 6 Aug 6 (Sunday) September 5 October 3 November 9 December 5 From the Desk of the President Consideration.. Hey, where did our summer go? It seems like it lasted about 15 minutes. After a cool, wet and windy May and June the weather improved for a nice July and August. It seems to me there was more activity on the lake this year than the few previous summers. We had lots of boaters, tubers, skiers, kayakers and jet skis enjoying our beautiful lake. I have also had reports that fishing was great as well. Now cooler temperatures will move in and it will be time to put on that fall jacket. Soon, docks will start to disappear along with our seasonal friends and neighbors. It will soon be time to put out fall plants Forand YourHalloween decorations. Consideration.. Our fall activities include our 2nd annual walleye planting project and repair of the Bear. This year in early October we will plant 2, walleye in our lake. Again, we have donation canisters at many businesses in the community. You can also send a check to the PLA, ear marked walleye planting project. Your donation toward this project would be greatly appreciated. The Bear is still under repair. Virginia Stevens has requested that the Bear be taken down and moved to her studio so that she can work on it during the winter to be returned in the spring. We are also considering revamping of the triangle that the Bear is sitting on. I would like to welcome our new PLA seasonal trustees: Paul Karbowski, Dick Elliott and George Bearden. I would also like to thank Betty Waak, Stephanie Patil, and Dick Guernsey for their past service and contributions to the PLA. Let s hope for a beautiful fall season.. Greg Nxxdxd Vxry Much! 3 PLA NEWS CLEAN BOATS CLEAN WATERS(CBCW) Trained PLA members and board members conduct a CBCW program at the MDNR public access on Paradise Lake each Saturday morning through the summer months. This program informs lake users of invasive species and how to prevent their spread by using the boat wash station to clean your boat when moving between different bodies of water. Informative and useful handouts are available. Visit and learn. A SUMMER DAY IN PARADISE The fun summer festival, hosted by the PLA was held on Saturday July 1 st this year. Delicious pancake breakfast, Trot the Trail walk/run, bake sale hosted by the Bliss Bunch and an outstanding street parade made for a fun community day. See page 5 for photos. Kudos to Chairmen Dick Elliott(Breakfast), Michelle Boyer(Trot the Trail) and Annie Coffin(parade)and to Dale and Angie Berry for their contribution to the PLA from their delicious lunch booth proceeds. LOON NESTING PLATFORM The loon nesting platform purchased from the local Loon Corps and placed in our lake both spring of 2016 and 2017 was ignored by the loons for a second year. The hope is to entice a third pair of loons to make their residence on our lake. Information presented by the Loon Corps suggests that loon chicks fledged from a particular lake will often come back to the same lake as adults to nest. Maybe next year. Who doesn t love a loon? BOATING SAFETY CLASS A Boating Safety class was conducted on August 5, 2017 from 9 until 3 at the Carp Lake township hall. Thanks to the Emmet County Sheriff Marine officers who continue to train perspective boaters in legal and safety boating regulations in the State of Michigan. Kudos also for the attendees who care enough to learn proper boating procedures and to Dick Elliott who contacts, schedules and advertises the event each year. Safe boat operations can save lives. Safe boating is pleasure boating. Enjoy our lake!! WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS We would like to welcome new PLA Seasonal Trustees George Bearden, Dick Elliott and Paul Karbowski. Dick had been vice President a few seasons back. Mike Madden also stepped from seasonal to full time trustee. We voice appreciation for their willingness to serve and also many thanks to parting trustees Dick Guernsey, Stephanie Patil and Betty Waak for their years of service!! PLA WEBSITE The PLA website is Visit there for updated information about our lake and community. There are a number of beautiful photos submitted by PLA members. If you have photos you would like to share, send to photos@paradiselakeassociation.org. Members can reach a given board member at specific addresses noted on website or all board members using address: board@paradiselakeassociation.org. If You Love Paradise Lake You Should Join the Paradise Lake Association Our $15 (or more by choice) annual membership fee is far less than 1 tank of gas or a dinner out. For that cost you receive water quality monitoring with oversight by Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, surveys by various organizations, walleye planting, loon raft placement, Clean Boats, Clean Waters program, sponsorship of Emmet County Sheriff Boating Safety class, our fun summer festival and quarterly newsletters to keep you advised. Our membership year runs January 1 st through December 31 st, the address label on your newsletter reminds you of the year your dues are paid through. An application/renewal form is on page 7 of this newsletter. Join us in protecting our beautiful lake. The fun times and events are a bonus! (Continued on page 4) 3

Paul Karbowski, behind the camera, also helped. Our White Knights spiffin up our community image!! Join the team and enjoy Donna s grilled pizza afterwards. DEQ LANDING BLITZ was conducted on July 8, 2017 by PLA volunteers (from left) Cathy Freebairn, Greg Torsky, Barry Potter and Marilyn Smith at the Paradise Lake Public access. During this year s Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Awareness Week, members of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Michigan Department of Natural Resources, as well as dedicated volunteers held public education events at more than 60 boat launches across the state. The fourth annual AIS Landing Blitz helped prevent the spread of harmful AIS by encouraging boaters and anglers to comply with laws and best practices. AIS are nonnative aquatic plants and animals that disrupt the natural ecosystem, tourism and the economy. 4

6 Community Notes PARADISE LAKE IMPROVEMENT BOARD (PLIB) The last PLIB meeting was held Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Carp Lake town hall budget was approved. The next meeting will be Wednesday, November 8th at 7 PM. Results of the U of M Biological station study regarding sediment on a small section of Blake s Beach shoreline will be presented. Lake Saver s John Tucci finds Biological control of Invasive Hemlock Invader Detroit Free Press Hemolck trees line Michigan lakes and rivers, cooling them for fish that would die without the protection. Hemlocks and aquatic ecosystems go together; their fates are intertwined along our lakes and rivers. Today hemlocks are in danger of falling to another ghastly Great Lakes invader, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA), identified as a waxy material at the base of the trees needles. The woolly intruder threatens hemlocks, trout and other fish. It sucks nutrients wherever it lands. Dead woodlands and stagnant water follow in its wake. And it has landed in Michigan. So far the MDNR has issued public alerts and are quarantining wood but no solution has been forthcoming. At stake are our waterways. A Michigan entrepreneur specializing in ecosystem restoration may have an answer. John Tucci of Richland is the founder of Lake Savers (which provides the aeration system, Clean Flow, in our lake) which has a mission to make lakes healthier using natural, sustainable strategies that work. Tucci stumbled upon something in his work with water issues around the country. I realized that the hemlock is such an important part of the rivers out there, that we branched into a natural approach to HWA, one that is biological. What Tucci found is a beetle, Sasajiscymnus tsugae or Sasi. Sasi is a predator beetle that eats only HWA. USDA traced the origin of HWA to Japan where the first Sasi predator beetles were collected in Tree Savers is the only commercial lab in the country mass-rearing Sasi for distribution and release on private as well as state land said Tucci, who formed Tree Savers in We hope the State of Michigan will consider a solution like this. Pesticides alone can t solve the problem. Editor note: Thanks John. The world needs more folks like you, searching for natural solutions to natural problems. If people fought sin as hard as they do middle age, earth would be a moral paradise HAL BOYLE, columnist 6
