2 President s Report ~ Randy Beardsley Spring has sprung as the HSFC kicks off its spring season with Tournaments, Kids Can Fish Too events and seminar workshops to prepare us for a great season of fishing in East Central Florida. On March 21st we had our bi-annual Spring cleaning of the Halifax River. Over twenty members and seven boats left the Dunlawton boat launch to scour the mangroves and islands of debris and hazardous materials. William Hallums and his crew retrieved a six-foot tractor tire from the shoreline near the NSB Coast Guard Station and took the prize for the most unusual find. A special thanks to Chef Slavick Vasely from Down the Hatch and Andy White for a great Low-Country Seafood boil of shrimp, crab clusters, sausage, potatoes and sweet corn. Also, a special thank you to Helen and Robert Klenk of Halifax Wrecking for providing the dumpster to collect all the debris. A good time was had by all for a job well done. On March 28 we began the Spring season with our annual Kids Can Fish Too clinics at Crabby Joe s Deck & Grill on the Sunglow Pier. Photos of this event are featured on page 10. Our thanks to Heather Scherer s coordination of this event, and to all our members and sponsors that volunteered their time to make this event a success. To prepare for our tournament season we had a special workshop session at our March 19th general meeting on bait rigging for offshore, inshore and nearshore fishing (Photos on page 8). Many members expressed that they would like to see more of these workshops at our monthly meetings. Our programs director William Hallums is expanding the content of our seminars to include more hands-on workshops. Our first tournaments of the year will be our 15th Annual Offshore Tournament held on April 11th and our 1st Annual Inshore Tournament on April 12th. Our Captain s Meeting for these events will be held on April 9th at 7:00PM at the Riverside Pavilion. We will have music, great food, raffles and much more. For more information about this event see the announcement flyer on page 7. Any questions about upcoming events or to inquire about volunteering, contact me at; tournaments@hsfc.com or by phone (386) Andy White Tournament Director Program Director ~ William Hallums HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER!! If you missed our March 19th meeting, we had an excellent presentation on bait rigging presented by some of experience members. Over 30 members were in attendance as they learned baiting techniques for inshore, offshore, near shore, and reef fishing. Vickie Davidson presented baiting techniques for near shore and reef fishing using pinfish, clams, squid, blue claw crabs, sand flees and shrimp. Joe Zsembik demonstrated rigging techniques for trolling with Ballyhoo and Bonita strips. Randy Bearsley demonstrated rigging techniques using trolling lures and skirt baits. Yours truly did inshore fishing rigging techniques using shrimp, pig fish, blue crabs, and mullets. There was something for every angler and a suggestion for continuing workshop seminars was expressed by a number of members. FISHING BUDDIES On March 14th we had a fishing outing and only three people showed up to go out fishing. We were expecting more people to turn out and enjoy a day of fishing. Al Babieri and myself went out on Joe Pietroburgo s boat to do some inshore fishing. Al caught a large blue fish, while Joe caught a blue fish, a jack, and a keeper sea trout. Yours truly caught six blue fish and a jack. A good time was had by all. I m hoping that our June 13th fishing outing will have a better turn out. APRIL MEETING Our next meeting is April 16th and we will have a guest speaker to address how to prepare for the Lady Angler s Tournament. We re hoping to have a large turnout of lady anglers at this meeting. The guys are also invited! Till then, tight lines everyone! We will need volunteers to help with the hospitality services of serving food and beverages to our members and guest. Please contact Bob Kawka our Hospitality Director if you can assist as a food handler or bartender for the Capitan s Meeting. We also need help at the docks for the weigh ins at these tournaments. Please contact Tim Colwell our Weigh- In director if you are interested in volunteering. Our club depends on its membership for volunteers to help provide all the events and programs that makes our organization a success. Keep your lines tight and take a child fishing. 3 Angler of the Year - Tom Lloyd Well, we finally caught a break on our local weather patterns allowing us of get out of the house and onto the water. While most people in the area were enjoying the bike week festivities, some few found the time to get on the water and throw a line. Randy and Coleman Beardsley were able to get out and turned in weigh slips for mangrove snapper, jack crevalle, and a bluefish. I was able to break away, also, and found the redfish bite starting to turn on. Our current leaderboard stands as follows: 1. Randy Beardsley points 2. Mike Mckee points 3. Dennis Maas points 4. Vickie Davidson - 60 points 5. Tom Lloyd - 50 points There is still plenty of time to get involved in our Angler of the Year tournament, and turning in your weigh slips is very easy. You can obtain a hard copy weigh slip from Tim Colwell and turn it in at the Club, or you can submit your weigh slip elecronically through our website at Until next month, get out there and catch em up. If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there d be a shortage of fishing poles. ~ Doug Larson Membership ~ continued from pg. 2 Please make sure you have your HSFC membership ID card to obtain your discounts at participating sponsors. Any new member or renewal member who has not received a membership card, please see me at the next general meeting to get your membership ID card. HOT KNOTS MAILINGS Hot Knots is distributed to all members via and will also be posted on the HSFC website. If you have not been receiving the Hot Knots by , please contact Tom Lloyd, our Corresponding Secretary at corr@hsfc.com, or by telephone (386) , with your correct address. Hard copies of the newsletter may be obtained at our monthly general meetings. COMMITTEE MEETINGS In order for HSFC to provide all the programs, tournaments, kids programs, and special community events it needs the support of its membership to keep our club operating. We urge all members to get involved with one of our committees. The more volunteers we have, the easier the burden for us to run all our planned activities. We ask that you contact one of our committee directors to learn more about their committees and how you can help us with volunteering your time. Committee involvement is best way to make new friends and to socialize with fellow members. BLUE BOOK MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY If you did not receive your copy of the 2015 Blue Book Membership directory, you may obtain a copy at one of our general meetings; or if you would like a copy mailed to you, please send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: HSFC Memberships, 3431 S. Ridgewood Ave., Port Orange, FL Keep on trolling! Iron Pot Bob ~ continued from pg. 5 Remove pan with shrimp mixture from heat and serve immediately from pan. Serving suggestions: serve with flavored sour cream, spicy ranch, salsa, Pico De Gallo, guacamole, fresh chopped tomato, slice of lime, fresh chopped onion and peppers, etc. I know there s a lot of good seafood cooks out there. Please send me your favorite seafood recipes to: ironpotbob@eee.org I would love to give you credit. Please note it is our policy to test any submitted recipes to ensure others can enjoy them the same way as you intended. Meanwhile, keep eating seafood, (it s good for you). Sea you, Iron Pot Bob Recipes for the Everyday Fisherman with Iron Pot Bob Howdy folks, Iron Pot Bob here! Cookin Up Slavik s Sauce Recipes and Shrimp Fajitas Many of you have requested Slavic s sauces for the fish that he cooked for the club at the January 15 meeting. After tracking him down (he s harder to catch than many of the fish I ve tried to catch), here are his sauces for both fish and salad from that meeting. Slavomir Vesely s recipes contained the ingredients as follows. There are no measurements given here as these are only guidelines. The first four are for making sauces for fish. The bottled chili sauce is Roland Chili (sweet) Sauce found at Publix. The Sauces Chili Coconut Sauce: canned coconut cream and chili sauce. Peanut Butter Chili Sauce: creamy peanut butter and chili sauce. Lime and Chili Sauce: Rosie s Lime Juice and chili sauce. Also include the zest of a whole lime. Then squeeze the juice of the lime into the mixture. Add a little Kosher salt and black pepper. Cucumber and Dill Sauce (can also be used as a salad dressing): finely grated cucumber (after seeds have been removed), chopped fresh dill, white vinegar, sugar, Kosher salt, pepper, sour cream (omit the sour cream for another version of cucumber/dill sauce). The Salad Combine red bell peppers, red onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocado in a large bowl. Add olive oil, Kosher salt, black pepper, sugar, white vinegar and toss. Then add chopped lettuce and Gorgonzola cheese and toss again. The Golden Tile fish was grilled with only salt and pepper. It was partially cooked first and then put into a pan over the side heat to finish. Note: Clear eyes in a fish mean a fresh fish. Then the eyes cloud over as each day passes. The Mrs. and I were lucky enough to catch a presentation on shrimping by Capt. Lee Noga. If you missed it, you missed a great, detailed presentation on shrimping. We asked her how she likes to cook shrimp and she referred me to her website page: reelchicksfish.com. Here is a recipe for Shrimp Fajitas by one of her students taken verbatim from Capt. Noga s website. Shrimp Fajitas By Flhusker Ingredients for 2 fajitas: Please note: the amounts of ingredients can be adjusted to preference, a second meat could also be added if desired. ½ cup of small to medium peeled and deveined shrimp (or more if desired) ½ cup washed and sliced green and/or red bell peppers or about ½ of one pepper ½ cup sliced sweet onion or about ½ small onion ½ tablespoon Fajita seasoning (Consider Chef Paul Prudhomme s Magic Seasoning Blends: Fajita Magic Southwest Flavor or McCormick) 2 teaspoons of Lime or Key Lime juice 1 tablespoon butter (optional) 1 tablespoon canola oil Another ½ tablespoon Fajita seasoning Another 1 teaspoon of Lime or Key Lime juice OR liquid margarita mix 6-inch flour tortillas For an optional side combine ¼ cup sour cream, 1/3 scant teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon fajita seasoning. Refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours before serving. Directions for Shrimp Fajitas: In plastic bag or sealed container, mix the shrimp, ½ the seasoning first listed and lime juice. Try to gently work the flavorings around to all shrimp. In another bag or container mix the onion and peppers with the other half of the seasoning and lime juice. Marinate in refrigerator for about 2 hours, gently mixing each occasionally. Dampen a paper towel with water and wrap around the flour tortillas. Place in microwave and program for 20 seconds. DO NOT START YET. It is not recommended to heat more than six at a time. If you are heating more than two tortillas, add 5 seconds for each additional tortilla up to six or a total of 40 seconds. Heat butter in medium size frying pan to medium temp. When the butter turns a light brown it is ready, add the shrimp and slowly stir. After the shrimp have been coated by the butter and have begun to turn to opaque (not translucent) on the edges, about 30 seconds, add the tablespoon of canola oil, the peppers and onions, and the second ½ tablespoon of Fajita seasoning. Toss and mix to allow shrimp to cook through (about 3 minutes) and for vegetables to become tender but still crunchy. Note: If you prefer your vegetables to be more tender or you do not want to use the butter you can adjust the recipe. Just before pulling the pan from the heat, start the preprogramed microwave. If doing more than one batch, adjust your process accordingly. Serve the tortillas in the warm paper towel or a tortilla keeper. Iron Pot Bob ~ Cont. on page 4

Jim and his charters you can reach him at (386) or on-line at saltytalesfishing@gmail.com. April Fishing Forecast Capt. Jim Britton (386) Well, it will not be long and all of the talk will be about our nearshore Cobia bite! These big bruisers should be following the Manta Rays (currently in Brevard County) north just as soon as our water warms up a little more. When these fish arrive we will see everything from 10 foot jon boats to 30 + foot offshore vessels chasing them. On busy days remember to be courteous too many boats chasing the same ray will ensure that nobody gets a good chance to hook up. If you see another angler stalking a ray, stay back and keep alert, chances are another ray will come into the picture shortly. Artificial baits like large topwaters or plastic eels, and large swimbaits should make for a productive day. If bait is more your thing try pogies, mullet, shrimp, blue crabs, or even a large mud minnow. Inshore anglers can expect a steady diet of redfish, trout, and flounder now that spring has arrived. Fish deeper holes and creeks on an outgoing tide with shrimp, mullet, or your favorite artificial jig. Follow the fish onto the flats, on the incoming tides and target your favorite shoreline or oyster bars with these same baits, as well. Offshore captains will be productive with trolling spreads, dolphin show up in numbers at the start of spring. Skirted and naked ballyhoo have been the bait of choice. A few large wahoo are still being caught, as well. In the surf (much like the cobia) pompano are starting to show up in good numbers just to the south of Flagler County. Therefore, it should not be long and these delectable treats will be making their way north also. Shrimp, sand fleas, clams, and even jigs tipped with Fish Bites will all work well for an invitation to dinner! Surfcasters can also look forward to Spanish mackerel showing up in April. These fish are a lot of fun to target with Gotcha plugs, silver spoons or topwater plugs. Remember to use a heavier leader to prevent these toothy creatures from cutting you off. 5 Halifax River Cleanup!! Tournament Prep Seminar
6 Children s Fishing Pgr. ~ John Baller We had 200 kids in attendance during our kids fishing clinic held on March 28th at the Sunglow Pier. This annual fishing clinic held in conjunction with Florida Fish and Wildlife, Sponsored by Crabby Joes Sunglow Pier and Fish Florida has been one of our most popular events throughout the years. Children learned the importance of protecting our natural resources and the nuts and bolts of fishing through the FWC s learning stations. Kids had the opportunity to learn fishing knots, the importance of conservation, how to cast a fishing pole and some caught there first fish! Through a donation from Fish Florida we were able to give away 200 fishing rods and reels to children beyond Volusia County. The Fishing Shack supplied all the bait and tackle necessary for a great day of fishing. Thanks for your continued support! Thank you to all of our members who volunteered to make this event a success and a special thanks to Heather Scherer for all her hard work in planning and coordinating this event. New to the Kids Can Fish Too program, The Marine Max Crew. Marine Max brought along ice cream for all the kids and fit right in as volunteers in our fishing clinic, thanks Kimberley and we are looking forward to working with you in the future! Our next event is in the works and scheduled for October, the event will be held at the marine discovery center in NSB. Event Coordinator Needed The Halifax Sport Fishing Club is pleased to announce its participation with The Marine Discovery Center. This year s event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 in New Smyrna Beach on the Halifax River. The fishing club is excited about this new opportunity to present the club s Kids Can Fish Too program. The Kids Can Fish Too program was started over ten years ago by the Halifax Sport Fishing Club to promote ethical angling and awareness of the marine environment to children ages six through twelve in the east central Florida area. The club has presented its program to thousands of kids at various venues throughout Volusia County and has distributed over eighteen hundred free rods and reels in conjunction with Fish Florida. The Kids Can Fish Too clinic will run on Saturday from 9AM to 3PM. The club will set up learning stations that consist of a series of booths highlighting Knots, Tackle, Good Angler, Habitat, Casting and a finish line where the kids will receive a goodie bag with FWC regulations and fish identification cards. These booths will be staffed by volunteers from the fishing Club.
