1 APRIL2010 SENIOR ANGLERS OF ESCONDIDO HOOK LINE AND SINKER Volume I Issue OFFICERS PRESIDENT S REPORT I am still thrilled over and proud of our club regarding the YMCA Youth Day we hosted last month. Congratulations go to Chairman Ron Parker and his sub chairmen Will Cozzens (cooking) and Thomas Martinez (fishing). There were over 30 members of our club there helping make the experience for the youth a really positive one. We were surprised when over 50 children showed up when we were expecting only 25! Our people took it all in stride and made it a wonderful time for the children, their counselors, lifeguards, and leaders of the Y. As an added benefit, the kids caught 9 fish! Ron Casapulla s boat brought in 3 of them!! Speaking of Ron, he is heading up our 1 st picnic of the year, An Italian Fest. It s at Lake Dixon on Tuesday, April 19 th. Always delicious, he needs you to sign up for the picnic either at the meeting or by calling him at home. His number is in the Directory. Keep saving those fish for our 2 nd picnic, which is the Annual Fish Fry on May 19 th. Norm Martineau is the Chairman. He will accept both salt water and fresh water filets. Lake Hemet is the location of our 4 th campout of the year. It s goes from April 26 th to April 30 th. Marv and Joyce Van Vorst are the Wagon Masters. Anitra and I are finally going to be there. We missed the last 2 times our club camped there. We re excited as we hear that the staff is very friendly and helpful, the fishing is good, and of course the fellow Anglers are always fun to be with. I ve added a new column to the newsletters, which is called Meet our Members. I ll start with interviews of our Board of Directors. Look for it and let me know what you think about it. Keep your lines wet and feet dry. 2 Page 2 MEET OUR MEMBERS By Dave Gehrke This is the first of a new section designed to have all of us get to know our members better. I ll be starting off with our Board of Directors. Bob Taylor is our Vice-President of Fresh Water, although he would be preferred to be called Fresh Water Czar. Dave: Bob, When did you first become interested in fishing? Bob: When I was 7 my grandmother and I would fish in the Delta for bass and catfish. At age 10 I would bike from Oakland to Berkeley to fish in the bay. Dave: You grew up in the Bay area. How did you get to Southern California? Bob: I had worked for IBM and traveled extensively to places like Japan, Australia, and England. Then in 1979 I met Karen. We wanted to settle down and San Diego seemed like the right place. Dave: How did you become involved with the Senior Anglers? Bob: I have Karen to thank for that. She first saw that there was a club by going to the Street Fair in Escondido. Then she met Peggy McSpadden on Jury Duty and Peggy really was enthusiastic about the club, so we attended a meeting and got Hooked. Dave: What is your favorite kind of fishing? Bob: I love to go out on the ocean and catch Albacore Tuna. We probably eat fish twice a week and tuna is high on our list. Dave: What plans do you have for us as Fresh Water Veep? Bob: Our members like the tried and true places. They are open to new ideas and we will try out new places occasionally. Lake Hemet is an example of a new place that became popular with our members. Dave: Thanks Bob. It s been a pleasure to get to know you better. You re doing a fine job here and the Senior Anglers are lucky to have your leadership.

5 Page 5 YOUTH DAY AT LAKE DIXON MARCH 13, 2010 O ur third annual Youth Day at Lake Dixon was without a doubt a total success. We had over 30 Senior Anglers of Escondido attend and because of their help this event was better than ever. The Angler s participated in many ways which meant they drove boats and fished with the youngsters, cooked, served food, helped with the hikes, games, or just cleaned up and did what had to be done. The annual affair this year hosted 57 children, ages 8 to 12, and 13 Counselor s from the local YMCA. We also fed a few of the Park Rangers who were so accommodating to our people and the group from the Y. The Park provided the fishing permits for the kids and 7 boats. Also they arranged to have two Naturalists (one was our own member Simone Green) guide the hikes and help the children learn about the plants, flowers and animals that are part of the Lake Dixon and Daley Ranch area. This year some of the children caught some nice trout thanks to our expert Senior Angler Instructors. In addition to the hiking the children played games such as frisbee, soccer, whiffed ball and they were also offered boat rides. At noon we cooked and handed out 80 hamburgers, 160 hot dogs, and 100 bags of chips, juice, water, 300 cookies and all sorts of condiments that made those sandwiches scrumptious. Hot dogs and hamburgers always taste better barbequed out in the woods, don t they? The serving line was so organized and controlled by a few of our Angler wives that we fed everyone in short order and many came back for seconds. I want to extend many, many thanks to the people that made this possible. We need to extend special kudos to Marilyn Prewitt who baked and donated the cookies. Next year make sure you volunteer to help with this very worthwhile event. You ll have a good time and just watching the children will be thoroughly heartwarming. Ron Parker

8 Page 8 March Fresh Water Report Trip Report for Santee Lakes March 14 to 18 This was our first trip to Santee Lakes. It s close to home and it has great campsites. The people there were very accommodating. There are 7 lakes, some for trout and some for bass and catfish. There were only 4 RVs that participated in the campout, but a good time was had by those who came. The fishing was disappointing due to problem with the previous week s stock of trout (most of the fish arrived dead). A few nice bass were caught and Dave Gerhke had the largest at 16 ½ inches. In spite of the lack of trout, we all enjoyed the park and would like to go back another time. FRESH WATER Bob Taylor, Vice President NEXT TRIP Lake Hemet - April 26 to 30 Marv and Joyce Van Voorst are Wagon Masters for this trip and they have some fun activities planned for us. This is another trip that s not too far, only about 70 miles from Escondido. If you have never been to Lake Hemet, it well worth the trip. It is at 4000 foot elevation and with tall pines. For us Southern Californians it s like being in the Sierras. I m predicting we are going to have really good fishing there at that time of year. Upcoming Trips Pinezanita/Lake Cuyamaca - June 7 to 11 This has become a favorite spot for the club. Al and Simone Green with be our Wagon Masters. They are taking signups at the meeting, but you can contact them with any questions. June Lake - September 8 to 15 In the fall we ll be off to our spot in the Sierras. Karen and I will be Wagon Masters with Dave and Anitra as Assistants. We always enjoy good fishing up here as well as the incredible beauty. We need your sign-ups and deposit by the April meeting. The deposit is $109, and your check should be made out to Pine Cliff RV Resort. See you at the meeting and on the trail, Bob Taylor
