When will it ever end!?!?! All I want to do is get back to the lake hopefully with better conditions than last summer. I was listening to one of our local weather reporters telling all of us that 2008 was one of, if not THE, wettest year on record in the state of Missouri. TELL US SOMETHING THAT WE DIDN T KNOW. Here s hoping for a little dryer weather for We already have a number of events scheduled for this summer. There are going to be two Pro-Am weekends. The Pontiac Catfish dive is on. The South Dakota Tournament is a go for late July. The Lead Hill Catfish dive is supposed to be on again for this year, and there are still open weekends available for fun dives, lake clean ups, scavenger hunts, or more shoot-em-ups. So there are a lot of opportunities to get back in the water and forget about gas prices, mortgages, seedy politicians or whatever gives you heartburn. Let s get things off to a good start by attending the Spring Business meeting and helping to make this a great year for the Council. The meeting has yet to be bid as I write this letter, but we should have the information soon enough that it can be found in this issue of the Scoop. I ve been dry waaaaaaaaay toooooooo loooooong!! B, L, & M From the VP of Competition: I trust everyone was good last year and Santa had you on the correct list. Well, without much fanfare, 2009 has slipped into reality. That means that at the time of this writing, there are only 88 days till we start the annual water rodeo!! Now is the time to get the regs in for service, the tanks V.I.P./hydro-tested, the spearguns ready, points sharpened, boats cleaned/serviced, and of course, double check that the wet suit did not overly shrink during the winter. There are still plenty of dive dates open for the season. So do not be shy, fire up the club members and pick a date to sponsor a dive to have some fun at the lake!!! There are two dives that were added since the last issue of the scoop. I have gotten some info about another catfish dive on June This one is at Jordan s Landing on Norfork Lake. I will check into the details. The second dive is the dive that some of our members, (Bob Benson, Don Heskett, Mike Van Haele, and Phil Lamm) attended last year in South Dakota. The date is July 25-26, for the Third Annual Lake Oahe Spearfishing Tournament, Pierre, South Dakota. This is a great dive with plenty of fish, prizes, prize money, and a great time. For full details, contact Caleb Gilkerson - caleb@steamboatgf.com, or Mike Van Haele, Don Heskett, Phil Lamm. The Spring Business Meeting is coming up, but at this time, I do not have the details as to when and where and who!!! Keep your eyes on your s for details. Info could be in this issue from one of the other officers!! TBD!! Later, Phil Lamm

3 Page 3 News from the MDC Scuba Clubs: Save the Date! The Pontiac Spearfishing Tournament will be Saturday, June 20. Please mark your calendars. More details later... If you know anyone who might be interested in receiving info about the tournament, please send in his/her name and address, and we'll add it to the list. The format will likely be the same: Registration starting at 7 a.m. Take-off at 9 a.m. Weigh-in from 1 to 3 p.m. Awards and pizza buffet at Just Jackie's around 4:30 to 5 p.m. Any questions? back, or call Fins up! The Crew at Pontiac Cove Marina Bull Shoals Lake ************************* Hi! Hope you're staying warm! We re back up and running after a week without power...what a winter! On June 20th, the 8th Annual Spearfishing Contest and Fish Fry will be at Jordan Marina on Norfork Lake. We always give cash prizes (as well as bragging rights!) $100 Biggest Walleye -- $25 for 2nd $100 Biggest Catfish -- $25 for 2nd $25 Biggest Crappie The Fish Fry features the "best damn potato salad ever!" Anyone who is interested can call Jordan Marina at (870) Thanks! Denise Weber Ozark Scuba Divers There is a possibility we may lose our local dive shop - Ozark Scuba Center here in Rogers. Danny, the owner may try and do some things from his home. We'll still have the big shop in Springdale, Sportsco. Have killed 4 deer so far including 2 off my $200,000 deer stand. After the big ice storm, it took us 3 days to get back the electric, 4 days for cable and 8 days for telephone. Beaver Lake is getting back to normal levels, but don't know if the Corp. is going to leave that alone or not. Jerold called and said a toilet broke in his house and flooded the house for 6 hrs. while he was at dinner and a movie. Guess that's it for now, may have more to add at a later date. Between Pat, my local hunting partner and myself - we have taken six deer this year with a week left in the season. Have got to get the tanks to the dive shop for V.I.P.s, their hydro s are due next year. -Ken Kansas City Frogman Club Free Discover Scuba Class (sponsored by KCFM at Skin-N-Scuba) Know anyone who might be interested in taking scuba lessons? have them participate!!! Gilbert Wichita, KS KANSAS CITY FROGMAN CLUB Dave Camp 1501 Hanover Ct. Independence, MO daveoncemore@sbcglobal.net Attention novices. There have never been so many opportunities for new spearfishermen in the Midwest. I wish I had about thirty years less experience; this would be the year to get involved. There will be two Pro-am dives, the potential of earning a spot on a United States Nationals team, being one of the first to dive in the new council out West, the Rocky Mountain Spearfishing Association, the Inland Nationals, and on and on. The Pro-am last year was a great success, in fact one of the more successful events in the last decade for the Midwest Diving Council. Lots of pros, lots of ams, and lots of fun. This year should be even better. Just because you were there last year doesn't mean you can't give it another shot this year. The rumor is still in the air about the possibility of the Midwest hosting another Underwater Society of America United States Spearfishing Champioship in The Midwest will have a potential of twelve freediving spots with nine scuba spearfishing spots for men to fill, along with other spots for women. It would be great to see a bunch of these positions taken by novice spearfishermen. There are several novices here in the Midwest that are ripe for a place on a team. To become competitive, there is generally a two year learning curve. You guys and gals that have already gained some experience have definitely got a head start, however, if you're just getting started, with a little ambition there is still plenty of time to develop the skills to show the old spearos how it's really done. This will probably be the last chance for the Midwest to host such a prestigious event for at least a decade, as our friends out West will likely enter the scene (I hope). For the novices who are not familiar with the levels of competition, with a good score in the 2010 freediving event, you could earn a position on the United States World Team to represent the United States in the World Championship. Do not forget the Inland Nationals event in Wyoming this June. What a brutally competitive, and fun event. Lots of prizes, money, and most of all, fun, maybe even a fishy or two. This will be one of the Rocky Mountain Spearfishing Championship Series dives. Believe me, with the competition from those guys if you finish dead last you've done good, really good. I know there will be some atttending from the Midwest, so let's show 'em what we can do. It's was months, now weeks, by the next Scoop issue it will be days until we make our first splash of the year. I can't wait. Don't be bashful, get ahold of a partner, or one of the old salties and let's go. Sharpen up your spearpoints, Mike V. Van Haele s Spearpoints SHOW ME DIVERS Randy Depley P.O. For those that are interested, here is a weight loss plan that will work,!!!!!!!!!! A guy calls a company and orders their 5-day, 10 lb. weight loss program. The next day, there's a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike running shoes and a sign around her neck. She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads, "If you can catch me, you can have me." Without a second thought, he takes off after her. A few miles later huffing and puffing, he finally gives up. The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens. On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 10 lbs. as promised. He calls the company and orders their 5-day/20 pound program. The next day there's a knock at the door and there stands the most stunning, beautiful, sexy woman he has ever seen in his life. She is wearing nothing but Reebok running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, "If you catch me you can have me". Well, he's out the door after her like a shot. This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck. So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape. Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 20 lbs. as promised. He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/50 pound program. "Are you sure?" asks the representative on the phone. "This is our most rigorous program." "Absolutely," he replies, "I haven't felt this good in years." The next day there's a knock at the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads, "If I catch you, you re mine." He lost 63 pounds that week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look! New Advertiser!!! Aloha! Fun Definition for the Month: Diameter Indexing Safety System (DISS) -- Intermediate pressure port where a hose attaches, leading to demand valve or other apparatus. The More you Know... Has your cell phoned been I.C.E.d????????????? Here is a really great idea that came from a paramedic!!! We all carry our cell phones, (well most of us do) where ever we go so that we can be reminded to bring home the milk, call the wife to let her know that you will be home late for supper, or to call 911 in case of an emergency. But what happens if you are the reason for the 911 and are unable to call or even communicate with the police or paramedics???? That is where I.C.E. comes into the picture!! I.C.E. stands for: In Case of Emergency!!! The suggestions is that you make a listing in your cell phone address book titled ICE and then list whomever you want to be called. You may even have more than one listing such as ICE #1, ICE #2, etc., so that your family can be contacted in case you are not able to do so!!!
