A new website has been built and is now live for members to check out on your computer, tablet, or phone. This means you can check the latest Club information, fixtures, or social news wherever you are. The site is updated on a regular basis so you can be assured that the information you see is up to date. Webmaster Arthur Todd has constructed an easy-to-navigate website which includes pages for each of the three sports - golf, tennis and squash. These pages will include fixtures, results, club information, rule changes, and anything else relating to your particular sport. You will also find a social page keeping you up to date on social activities at the Club. Mickey Dennis King of the Sand again Michael Dennis of Royal Perth Golf Club racked up his sixth Drummond Golf State Sand Green Championship this weekend at Katanning Country Club. 197 golfers made the trip to Katanning Country Club, with 79 golf clubs represented from around Western Australia. It was a vintage Dennis performance over the two days, shooting 69 and 68 to finish at 7- under for a six stroke victory over runner-up and last year s champion, Adam Davey of Busselton. Continued Page 4 Photos from sporting and social events will also be uploaded. There are photos from the Drummond Golf State Sand Greens Championships held recently at the Club already on the site. A Links page will take you to the websites of state bodies of golf, tennis, and squash, as well as to sponsors websites. You are encouraged to visit the Club s new website and add it into your favourites or bookmarks and to visit it regularly. katanningcountryclub.com
2 Katanning Country Club Nick Kyrgios and Casey Dellacqua to team up for Hopman Cup AAP/The Sydney Morning Herald Wimbledon giant-killer Nick Kyrgios will team up with Casey Dellacqua this summer as Australia attempt to end their long-standing Hopman Cup title drought. And two-time grand slam champion Andy Murray will partner British 2012 Olympian Heather Watson at the mixed -teams event, starting at Perth Arena on January 4. Kyrgios made international headlines when he beat Rafael Nadal on the way to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this year. The 19-year-old from Canberra has been touted as Australia s next big tennis star, and will attempt to end the nation s 16-year Hopman Cup drought when he teams with Dellacqua. Australia s one and only Hopman Cup title came in 1999 when Mark Philippoussis and Jelena Dokic teamed to win the event. Kyrgios has risen to No.58 in the world rankings following his recent Wimbledon heroics. Dellacqua was languishing outside the top 200 in the world rankings late last year, but she has since shot up to 30th following a string of impressive displays, which included a run to the fourth round of the Australian Open in January. Kyrgios said he was excited at the prospect of making his Hopman Cup debut. I ve heard the Perth Arena is a great stadium, Kyrgios said. Hopefully we can get that atmosphere like a Davis Cup tie. That would be just sensational to play in front of a crowd like that because it really gives me the energy and spark to perform out there. I ll be teaming up with Casey and I think she ll be the leader of our little duo. I m going to look up to her so hopefully she can lead me when we play a bit of mixed doubles. Dellacqua was forced to withdraw from last summer s Hopman Cup due to injury, but is keen to make amends this time around. Meanwhile, the Western Australia Government has signed a new three-year sponsorship deal for the Hopman Cup. The deal includes an option for a further five years, securing the event for WA until President Mike Hobley Your Management Committee welcomes you to the first edition of our Club Newsletter. We will be endeavouring to keep you informed and up-to-date through this newsletter and through our new Club website. There is a lot going on at the Club and with our busy lifestyles some things slip through the cracks. New Club Website With the advent of a new and much invigorated Website we hope to be able to better communicate upcoming events and results and have a better avenue for feedback to management. The new website is easy to use and will be kept updated so you can refer to it for fixtures, results, club information, social events and much more. We urge you to visit the site and add it to your favourites or bookmarks and visit it regularly. The site s URL is: New Office Equipment As of this week the management committee approved the purchase and installation of three new computers, two new printers and a backup system to completely overhaul our aging and sometimes unreliable current system. This will allow us to future proof our Club for at least the next five years, retrieve data if necessary and make it much easier for volunteers to do their work. Volunteers Speaking of volunteers, a big thank you to all our hard working volunteers across all sports who do a lot of work behind the scenes largely unnoticed so we can all enjoy our sport. Our facility is a vital asset for the whole community and needs this support to continue. Bowling Club It is early days in the Bowling Club co-location viability study. Peter Kerin and I are part of a steering committee, along with the Katanning Shire and Katanning Bowling Club representatives, to prepare a business case study on the possibility of relocating Bowls to the KCC. It will largely depend on grant monies from the WA Department of Sport and Recreation, Great Southern Development Commission and others, and a lot of support from the Shire. Any debt needs to be affordable and we are mindful of keeping members informed of progress as ultimately it will only happen with your support. Annual Award Night At the time of reading we will have already held our Annual Award Night and I would like to think it is well attended. Based on feedback the decision was made to experiment with a less formal night in an attempt to encourage better attendance... we will see! Congratulations to all sporting Champions and I wish you all the best in your chosen sporting endeavours. If you have anything of interest to your fellow members that you would like included in the newsletter or on the website please contact Arthur Todd at: kcclub.webmaster@gmail.com Mike Hobley.

4 Katanning Country Club Dennis lost to Davey last year at Wongan Hills in a playoff, but in 2014 he left the Championship in no doubt. Dennis held a two stroke lead at the start of the second round, but raced out of the blocks early with a birdie on the second and the fifth holes while Davey succumbed to back to back bogeys on the third and fourth. Davey narrowed the deficit with birdies on seven and eight to get back to even par for the day and limit Dennis lead to four at the turn. The hole of the tournament was arguably the par-5 12th, where the top two really upped their games and Davey made a move that could have turned the tournament on its head. Dennis hit his drive right into the trees where his ball fell in the clear about 100m short of Davey s drive on the left. Davey was in his own spot of trouble just off the left edge of the fairway with no view of the green thanks to the hole curving to the left and out of sight. Despite having little room to work with Davey hit what was the shot of the tournament, a lovely draw over the trees to land on the green just 15ft from the pin where Dennis faced a similar putt for birdie. Not to be outdone, Dennis put the pressure on Davey sinking his putt to the delight of the gallery while Davey left his eagle chance agonisingly short of the hole. I was just trying to be consistent and play him out of it so to speak, said Dennis after his round. You can never count out Adam, he ll make for or five birdies and an eagle like that and then it s all over! After the 12th Dennis was never troubled, and the Royal Perth member was delighted to be crowned Champion again and get his name back on the coveted shield. It s my favourite of the year just because of the comradery of the fellas who come here. I grew up on the sand greens in Augusta, which is as far south as you can go. We hosted the Sand Greens in 1992 I think. They were oil greens and still are. Katanning Country Club was presented beautifully over the weekend, with clear and cool days giving perfect golfing conditions over the Championship Weekend. Katanning s course has recently had a facelift, moving from oil sand greens to compacted sand that is watered to keep its consistency. Dennis, the greenkeeper at Royal Perth, was full of praise for the setup and its welcoming members.. I think these greens are as good as we ve played on, probably since Bridgetown in On sand it s a bit harder to play than grass. On some holes you have to run it on and some it might stop well short. It s inconsistent as some times you ll land on and shoot off and some will stop well short, so you have to patient and take it as it comes. It s a great weekend and it s why I keep coming back! Katanning put on a really good show so Northam really have their work cut out for them! Northam will host the event next year, with Mount Barker Golf Club being announced this evening as the host of the prestigious event in Of the locals, Francois Van Zyl had Katanning s best result at 10-over par in a tie for 14th place and winning the best first round prize with a score of 70. Francois was a part of the winning Thursday s Super Scroungers competition with fellow local Nigel Aitken. Rob Gearine of Merriden took out the best nett prize with a 68 and 66 over the two rounds and Brian Carter of Gingin won the Veterans competition. Gilliam Jones of Mukinbudin won the Closed Gross Competition, with the best overall score out of the Sand Green Clubs at 1-over par and in 3rd place overall. GROSS WINNERS 1st Michael Dennis (RPGC). 2nd Adam Davey (Busselton). 3rd Andrew Monk (RPGC). 4th Tim Gilotti (Bunbury). 5th Carl Naake (Goldfields). Closed Winner, Gilliam Jones (Mukinbudin) & finished 3rd overall. Best 1st Round, Francis Van Zyl (Katanning).
