1 VOLUME 24 NUMBER 4 APRIL 2013 MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR 25 th ANNIVERSARY EDITION Bob and Lois Brady are from Middletown, New York and still have a home there. They bought their first Sweetwater home on 365 Melbourn in November of 1988, but did not live there and rented it out. In the spring of 1989, they bought a home on 335 Victoria that was used as a model for a while, and lived in the home on Easter and Thanksgiving holidays. They had been looking around Florida for a retirement home and originally wound up in Zephyrhills in a community that had families with young children. The Zephyrhills community was run by Rusty Green, who sent the Brady's to look at his newest development in Haines City, called Sweetwater, which was a senior community. By 2001, both Bob and Lois were retired. Bob worked for 35 years at Chrysler Corporation in their New York zone office. Lois worked part time in a grocery store and was also a teaching assistant. They now live 6 months in Sweetwater and 6 months in New York. While in Sweetwater they enjoy playing tennis and attending the various activities in the Clubhouse.

2 April 2013 Page 02 MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR 25 th ANNIVERSARY EDITION Jim and Mary Bray live at 330 Melbourn. They bought their home in the fall of 1988 and moved into it in July of They come from Virginia Beach, Virginia. They had been coming to Florida with the intention of retiring here. Jim's brother, J.R. had seen an ad in a magazine about Sweetwater, and told Jim and Mary to check it out. They liked what they saw. Few people were here at that time, so everyone was close and did everything together. The Bray's attended a party in November of 1988 and everyone in the community was there. Jim retired from C & P Telephone Company (which is now Verizon), as a cable splicer. Mary retired from the pediatrics department at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, as an RN. When they moved to Sweetwater in 1989, they immediately became involved in the community activities. Mary took blood pressure at the Friday morning coffees at the Clubhouse. Both played golf and went to the pool. Jim served on the Board of Directors and continues to work on the annual elections. Jim also was a member of the Gut Bucket Band. He read water meters and worked on putting the community water pipes above ground. Both Jim and Mary continue to attend activities in the Clubhouse and both are members of C.A.P. Jan Swayze

3 April 2013 Page 03 HOW TO SUBMIT ARTICLES Articles for Sweet Times may be submitted for consideration for publication by placing them in the box at the clubhouse. We must have your name and phone number, in case we have questions. The deadline is the 22 nd of every month. If you would like to have your anniversary included in Sweet Times, we will need to know the month, day, and how many years you are celebrating. We need this information before the deadline for the issue in which it should appear. As a reminder, we do not retain anniversary dates from year to year, so you will need to submit the date to us each year. Changes or items for the calendar must be submitted by whoever is in charge of that event. We do keep a listing of birthdays, but if yours is not already included, we need the month and day only. Thank you. June and Howard Shaw, Editors New Pickle Ball Mondays and Thursdays 10:00 A.M. 8 April 2013 Page 08 LADIES MONDAY GOLF LEAGUE The Ladies League is coming to a close for the season and it has been a good year. We had some good tournaments and regular play, tasty luncheons and lots of fun with good friends. We are finishing up the season with an interleague tournament and the spring luncheon on April 8 th. Awards will be given at the luncheon and new officers for the next year will be elected. See you next fall. Joy Bailey Secretary SHUFFLEBOARD In an effort to get more people playing shuffleboard, we are going to have the same times set up for play. Starting March 9, we will set 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, as our start times. We hope to get as many playing as possible. These are the set up times, but the shuffleboard courts are available to all residents any time they want to play. We hope to spark enough interest that we can end the season with a tournament. All anyone has to do to play is just show up at these times. So, talk to your neighbors and friends and come on down and let's have some fun. Joe Settles Shuffleboard Chairman

12 April 2013 Page 12 $ For American Cancer Society On Sunday, March 10 th, our Sweetwater residents and the pm cart crew came thru again. The pm crew serviced over 70 carts and made over $1900 for the American Cancer Society. The pm crew had a nice clean work area, thanks to Jason and his men (it was very much appreciated). We missed a few workers but, these fantastic guys and gals pulled it off without a hitch. The taxi crew, Joe MacNamara, Fred Mullin, Avie Stein, Ray White, Don Swayze, Bob Danis, Cheryl Wald, and Fred Golden kept the workers with carts to be worked on. The taxis also picked up the donations and delivered the carts. Great job guys. Down two greasers, Russell Reints greased over 70 carts alone. A bodacious job Russ. Thanks Board of Directors president Kyle Ewing also proved to be a super performer. Kyle alone checked and filled over 70 rear ends. A back breaking job, lying on the ground (eating dirt, dust in eyes, greasy, knuckle busting, and hip aching) job. But a must do procedure. Kyle really performed for the crew. He is one of the "best" my kind of guy. Of the more than 280 tires, not one left feeling low, thanks to Perry Harkness and Peter Carr (our newest American). This is also a back breaking job. Perry and Peter have a good system, one on each side and they keep the flow moving. Another super job done by two pros. After entering the yard, there are eight stations each cart goes through. Peter Vanos, Ron Couch and John Grande, kept the flow moving to the next area without a hitch. No easy task considering our limited work area. A good safe job, well done by these guys. Luv them. Any program of this scope needs people who are multi- taskers. We are lucky to have many who will do different tasks. Leon Felix, and Ben Wheatley are our brake men who are great at multi jobs. After, ensuring the carts are safe, and will stop. These guys will jump to anywhere the line is slowing down and help out. Can't buy help like this, or beat them. The battery crew is also a fantastic gang of guys. Jack "Doc" Hollowell our chief water man,and his men, Harold Mead, Ron Tankersley, Laurent Gravelle, and Bruce Julin, made sure not one of more than 420 battery cells left thirsty. A fabulous job guys. Marilyn Best brought us coffee and donuts at 10 o clock. We needed a break. The cart crew gals, (our lovelies) Jackie Couch, Melissa Greenwalt, Deb Hollowell, Cheryl Harkness, Joan Wheatley and Barb Ewing, were beautiful washing carts and making over $150 for the cause, super job. xxxxs and oooos, my sweeties. Besides washing carts these gals along with Barbara Marcuccilli, Joyce Macnamara, Gwendolyn Julin, Diane Mullin, Opal Fields, Dixie Grande, Johneanne Gibbons, Ann Records, and Marilyn Best fed us. The gals had a chili dump and hot dogs and onions. What makes this so special is, the cart gals furnished everything. Five different chilis, hot dogs, salad, silverware, napkins, bowls, plates and the condiments. also crackers, and corn bread, apple cake, honey bell cake, banana nut bread, were all donated by the cart gals. It takes a program like this American Cancer fund raiser to prove, the people of Sweetwater and the Sweetwater Golf and Tennis community are the" best" in Florida. Jim Gibbons and I thank the cart crew, the residents whose carts we serviced and Frank and Willa, for the success of this program. Thank you all 1973 times. That s the total for the American Cancer Society fund raiser $ Luv ya... Al Best

19 April 2013 Page 19 INJURED BIRDS There has been a large number of injured birds recently due to fish line being left in the canal and at the lake. If you are fishing and break your line please be courteous and pull it in and throw it away. Last week a great blue heron lost it's life due to being tangled in the line. Before that an owl and a heron were caught in the same line and nearly died. We are lucky to have some caring and courageous residents to have helped these birds survive. We are also connected to a wildlife refuge who has been here a couple of times and helped in the rescue. According to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission it is illegal to feed cranes, herons, bears, raccoons, foxes and alligators. So when you are done fishing please remove the remaining parts of the fish and dispose of them. When you throw them back into the water it becomes food for the alligators. This also can spread disease among wildlife. Intentionally attracting birds and alligators to feed is prohibited. If you get caught doing this you may be fined. 20 April 2013 Page 20 ATTENTION ALL RESIDENTS The Social Club was disappointed in canceling our Easter Sunrise Service due to a lack of a Chair Person to organize the program. We placed two requests in the Sweet Times, and also posted a lengthy request on our Bulletin Board for the month of March. No one responded. WHAT IS HAPPENING????? We had a full page listing in the March Sweet Times of all our events scheduled for 2013 and specific areas where volunteers were needed. No responses were received. Our community has been extremely fortunate, up until the present, to have so many eager volunteers. In order to continue all of the great events planned by the Social Club, volunteers are required on a continuous basis. Volunteers are necessary for other areas in the community as well as the Social Club events. We all need to be a part of our community in one way or another. Yes, we have all worked hard in the past in our various occupations and are now RETIRED, but each of us can volunteer and support our community in some capacity. If you are willing to volunteer but are uncertain how, please contact Jeanette at and she will help you decide where you can participate and also explain what certain areas would be required on the part of a volunteer. If at some time you volunteered for a specific event and a problem occurred, please let us know. We would also appreciate any suggestions that would benefit us with regard to volunteers. Volunteers are a huge element that makes Sweetwater the great community it is. Sweetwater Social Club

21 April 2013 Page 21 FRANK HABERSTROH Our condolences to Willa Haberstroh and family on the death of Frank Haberstroh who passed away on March 12 th THANK YOU What a blessing it is to live in Sweetwater. Thanks to all of you for the many words of encouragement, cards, prayers and visits. Pastor Miles, you are a special blessing. Also, special thanks to our neighbors John & Mary Lane, Dick & Bets Weaver and Maryln Bell for helping Carolyn and for watching over her mom while I was in the hospital. God provided many angels during a very trying time. Thanks again, John and Carolyn Amstutz Thank You My family and I want to thank all our friends in Sweetwater for the cards, prayers and calls we received at the passing of our much loved husband and father (J.R. Bray) He loved living in Sweetwater for 20 years before leaving due to ill health. He is always telling people in Virginia about the things he and Nancy did with their friends in Sweetwater. Such as attending church, playing golf, playing cards, taking trips and especially going out to eat together. Thank you Nancy Bray and Family. A Hearty Thank You I just want to say thank you so much for the meals, phone calls, get well cards, and greeters, I received during my recent illness. It was a long month during which I had 2 stents inserted by the heart; 2 dual aneurysms repaired in the aorta, and in 2 further medical treatments, I must have stents inserted in both legs. Again thank you and after all the procedures are finished, I hope to see all of you on the golf course or in the pub. Ray White, 153 Victoria SPECIAL THANK YOU A special thank you to all the people who sent us anniversary cards. It makes a special day more special. I am sure next year we will be in better health. John will not need his air tank and my floating disc will be healed. When these are cured we both will be able to get out and have a good time, see you all then. John and Barbara McMenamin Thank You I want to thank all of you for the cards, calls, visits and prayers in the recent passing of my husband Frank Haberstroh. He truly felt that you all were his family and he could be with God Knowing that all my friends and neighbors would be here to look after me. Again I want to thank you all and will be truly indebted to you all for thoughts and presence here for me to lean on if need to. Again Thanks!!! Willa Haberstroh

22 April 2013 Page 22 MEMORABILIA Thank you all for contributing to our Memorabilia table including the pictures. I really enjoyed seeing all of it. Hope you looked over everything on the table and saw the pictures and enjoyed it too. There were a lot of pictures that we shared and left for anyone to take. However some were taken with the name Littlefield on the back. She would like these so she can put them back into her album. Would you check to see if you have one of these and if you do, please put them into her basket at 189 Dartmouth or give them to me. Johneanne and I enjoyed doing this and thank you again. Also, thanks go out to Audrey Mahakian and Pixie Blackwell for setting up the picture collages. They were great. And a big thank you to Bob Shea for formatting the calendar. Jan Swayze and Audrey assisted with a supply of pictures. It really came out so good. As many of you know I took pictures for years of every event and it was good to see many of them again with all our Sweetwater people in the calendar. We appreciate all the time people gave to make this happen. Thanks, Marilyn Best LET'S HAVE FUN On April 1 st we're having a golf cart parade. Where we meet is on the poster in the clubhouse and in last month's Sweet Times and on Channel 95. If you have doubts or questions, maybe I can answer some of them in this article. 1. If you don't want to decorate, don't. 2. If you want a little something put 1 or 2 balloons on your cart. 3. What we would like you to do is put your last name and year you moved into Sweetwater Example: Jones or Jones 1994 Please put this on the bottom half of window. If you want to decorate but can't think of anything maybe this would help. Themes: Mardi Gras, Valentine, St. Pats Clowns, Bowling, Golf, Any sport. Ladies; Since this is on Monday, your carts are already decorated for golf. You can also decorate for the anniversary itself. After the parade, it s off to the clubhouse to see Sweetwater as it was many years ago. If you are staying at home, put a chair outside and say HI to us as we go by. WE WILL ENJOY IT. THANK YOU. PLEASE CONTACT US WITH ANY QUESTIONS. J. GIBBONS OR M. BEST
