It s been an amazing year for me and I feel that I have learned so much being the Commodore of KCYC. Congratulations to all of our newly elected Board. I know that Jerry has a great team to work with and I know he will lead this club to the next level. We have accomplished quite a bit this year. We ve secured our club house for at least 10 years. We ve made Kingston Opening Day of Boating a community event. We had some great cruises this year. We ve added lots of new members. We ve contributed to our community. We ve kept the club on solid financial footing and next year we will continue to work on bringing even more value to the membership. It s a great time to be a KCYC member. As always, our club cannot run by the Board s efforts alone. We ve had a lot of great volunteers this year and we will need more next year. If you can help with an event, help set up for a General Meeting or assist the Board in any way please do not hesitate to contact one of the Board members. We love to get new ideas from everyone so don t be shy. Speaking of events, we have several coming up over the next month. First, we will have our annual Change of Watch at the October General Meeting on October 19 th. On Saturday October 21 st we have the Commodore s Ball. This year we have the awesome Blues Counselors for our band, so don t miss out. The next weekend we will have our Halloween Party. I know Robin Lott can use some help so please reach out to her if you can assist. Some other events to keep an eye on are the Christmas Stocking project headed up by Cheryl Graham. There will be 2 sessions this week. October 10 th and 12 th from Noon to 3PM. There is also a session scheduled for Tuesday October 17 th at Noon as well.

Commodore s Report (Continued) In November we have now scheduled Comedy Night for Saturday November 18 th. Details will be forthcoming but this will be a Membership Drive event so we will be advertising this to the public. If you know anyone that might be interested in becoming a member this is a great event to bring them to. We will have 2 comic acts along with food. At our November General Meeting, on Thursday November 16 th the Board will prepare a holiday dinner and we will have our annual food drive for the Kingston Food Bank. Please bring canned goods and dry goods we can donate to the Food Bank. We also like to collect cash donations to buy turkeys for our needy families in Kingston. I want to thank everyone on our Board of Directors. You were all great to work with and you were responsible for making things run smoothly. I know the club is in great hands going forward and I see a very bright future for KCYC. I also want to thank everyone that volunteered to help no matter how big or how small the job may have seemed. Last but not least I want to thank my wife Kim for supporting me and being so helpful, often behind the scenes. You re the best. Sincerely, Tony Clark Outgoing Commodore KCYC 2017 The Best Little Yacht Club in Washington

Vice Commodore s Report I d like to dedicate my last Bosun s Pipe article to the 4-legged members of Kingston Cove Yacht Club. Of course, these are only the canines that I came to know personally on the docks at our many cruises, so excuse any omissions of KCYC Doggies dear to you. I ll begin with our Commodore s darling Mishka here in the arms of her porter at Belle Harbor. She tends to keep somewhat to herself, pampered, warm and well-fed, and usually seems to have the best seat on the boat. Sweet Corie patiently waits for her Admiral and Captain (our Rear Commodore Jerry and Fleet Captain Nancy) to finish lunch. All of KCYC are so glad that scar over her eye turned out to be good news. She s a trooper! Next is our Grand Old Gal, Dory, always ready with her sweet face and timidly friendly demeanor. She just may have been on more cruises than most of the humans in KCYC. If not on the dock, you ll find her curled up on her rug in David and Janice s Shine. Chester is a new Cruiser Dog who always seems to be on a mission as he lopes down the dock lately in a cone, Poor Guy. He travels with Steve and Kim Page who, I understand, didn t expect him to be quite as big as he is. Still, he s a gentle soul. Myrtle and Millie are twins who travel with Dan Schoenfeld and MaryAnn Harris on their new sailboat. MaryAnne says, Most of the time they are delightful, but not when I have to clean up poop! Poor dears seem to have some trouble distinguishing inside from outside when on the boat. Sheer cuteness makes up for their lack in judgment.

Vice Commodore s Report (Continued) Ah! Here we have the handsome lady s man, Todd and Jovita s Roman Lachelt! Rumor has it that there will be little Romans running around in a few months. He s a friendly guy, but if he s on a mission on a dock, stand aside! Butch and Sallie Brown s Sprit (aka BowSprit, Spritticus, or Spritser) takes command in the captain s seat while her pilot and first mate do the navigating. IN MEMORIAM Shelly and Alan Kester had to say goodbye to sweet old Jake not long ago. Some may have thought the many times he slipped overboard off the swim platform meant he was the clumsiest dog in the fleet. To be fair, he probably did better than most humans at an equivalent age would have and Alan got pretty good at hoisting him back on board! This year, we lost the manliest Labrador in the fleet, Tank. He could easily swing himself onboard Jim Simpson s boat with little traction available. Here, however, he is trying to be invisible. Jim went to a Husky game and left him with Coug Fans, Alan and Shelly Kester. The result should not have been a surprise. I thought he looked good in those Coug colors! It s been fun and rewarding serving as your Fleet Captain, Rear Commodore and Vice Commodore. I m looking forward to what s ahead in KCYC. Sallie Brown

Rear Commodore s Report Jerry Kirschner The bar operations continue to work well. Statements for the month of August are available. (September Statements will be available at the General Meeting.) Club activities have been slow because of many members have been enjoying the great outdoors. The August transfer to the General Fund was $900, bring the total for the 10 months of this fiscal year to $10,500. After the Board granted the Rear commodore the prerogative of hiring a bar manager, scope, pay and timing have been discussed with Denise Harrington. We agreed to move forward to further clarify expectations. Denise will be seen around the Club more frequently. Please, welcome her in her new role. Seahawks Sundays have been off to a good start. We need to get the team off to a better start! The next Seahawk Sundays will be October 8 (@ LA), 22 (@ New York) and 29 home). Watch for the details. There a few left over clothing items at the bar. If you want to claim any, check at the bar. Volunteer Club bartenders are always needed to fill in on low volume events. A notice went to all Club members. Gaining the MAST license is not difficult. Training behind the bar will be Oct. 14 at 9:00. Contact Jerry (kirschnerj43@gmail.com). Volunteer bartender of the month is Chuck Turner! All good things must come to an end.. as the saying goes! This will be my last Bosun s Pipe as the Rear Commodore. I have very much enjoyed this role, interacting with Club members from behind the bar, and the sharing the progress of the bar. I know that the next Rear Commodore, Jack Lott will have as much fun. Looking forward to serving the Club as Commodore. Report from the Fleet Nancy Langfwith, Fleet Captain KCYC hosted its second Bocce Tournament on Saturday and its first Olympic Games at Pleasant Harbor over Labor Day. The winners were: Bocce - Alan Kester, Linda Pickens, Robin Lott and Tom Pickens Blind Dinghy Race Todd Lachelt and Alyssa (Jim Simpson s step-daughter) Knot Tieing Dan Schoenfeld Margarita Pong Jovita Laschelt Team Gold Winners Potty Mouths: Jovita Lachelt, Steve Young, Craig Powell, Ilsa de Groen, and Dan Schoenfeld. Jerry Kirschner Go to the KCYC Facebook page to see all of the great pictures!

Report from the Fleet (Continued The Shilshole Cruise, Sept 19 Oct 1 is the final cruise of the season. We will have appetizers at the picnic area followed by meat on the grill and sides on Friday evening. Joe Charnes is hosting a Gourmet Burger pitch in on Saturday night and we will head in to Ballard on Saturday afternoon to see what mischief we can stir up! Thanks to everyone that participated in our cruises this season, both those with boats and those that find their way by car, ferry or RV. It was a season replete with activities, cooperative and beautiful weather, new friends, and as usual, lots of wonderful food. It was an honor to be your Fleet Captain! GOLFIN AND STUFF Now that the hot and dry weather is upon us, the golfers are warming up their bags of weapons of mass destruction, preparing to attack the local courses. Golf, just like other sports, has really undergone very few changes from the day it was created in Scotland. Sure, new clubs are invented every day. Soon a driver with a head larger than a cabbage will come into play or radar guided putters or balls guaranteed not to miss or a nuclear powered retriever will dive to deep depths to find that ball. But we re talking about rule changes. Football changes rules every year, baseball added the designated hitter and steroids, and basketball added the three point play. There needs to be changes for golfers over 60 and should be put into effect in Some examples: There shall be such thing as a lost ball. That missing ball is somewhere on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else and pocketing it makes it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging him or her a felony. If a ball passes over a hole without dropping in, it is indeed deemed to have dropped. Gravity supersedes the law of golf. A ball hitting a tree is deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball there. There is no penalty for so called out of bounds. If penny-pinching golf club owners bought sufficient land this would not occur. The player deserves an apology, not a penalty. Advertisements claim golf scores can be improved by purchasing new clubs, balls, shoes, etc., and since this is financially impractical for the average senior golfer, ½ a stroke hole may be subtracted for using old equipment. Gardening is upon us. When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed is to pull on it if it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant (not a weed!). When cutting back bushes, make sure a certified botanist has verified the species. Many men have incurred the wrath of the chief gardening mate for attacking the wrong shrub! Last year the moles created a mountain range and today all that remains is deep holes where the dynamite decimated the grubby critters. Watching old TV re-runs and I was curious to note that on Gilligan s Island the professor could make a radio from a coconut but couldn t fix a hole in the boat. What do they call male ballerinas? Why are you IN a movie but ON TV? CAN YOU CRY UNDERWATER?? Tom

Where the Heck is Pete? Trying to Reason with the Hurricane Season End of September In the Coast Guard, I spent many days off shore between the Carolinas and Virginia. A few of my most exciting bridge watches happened in storms east of Cape Hatteras NC. Walking around the shoreline and museums on the Outer Banks was a real adventure. It s interesting how each state has different rules for dogs on the beach. In Maine, off leash was fine before 10:30am and after 5pm. New Hampshire had dog poop bag dispensers at each beach approach but big signs saying; No Dogs Allowed on Beach. Cape Cod had about 30% of the beaches open to dogs and half of them allowed off leash running. The Carolinas are much more dog friendly and pretty much anything goes so long as she doesn t jump into someone s space. When September started we were being thrashed around by the remnants of an un-named tropical storm called Number 10. Shortly after that, Gert threw a little wind and rain on the NC Coast. Then Harvey showed up and dumped about 10 inches of rain, Dave Lucas wears a dress, on our campsite at Hatteras. We were on a little bit higher ground, a good foot above the road but at one time the water was about halfway up to the bottom lug nut on the RV tires. I parked the Fiat on a little higher mound of sand and it stayed dry. I will put a few pictures of angry Atlantic, then 3 days later. The street outside my RV Park, Then a few other sites. Water temps are in the 80 s.

On a nice day, the ocean is great but the storms have caused serious run-out problems. You can feel the pull just being knee deep in the surf. Leaving North Carolina, I headed across Alligator River and into South Carolina. Along the way, a broken branch was sticking out under the canopy of trees and I struck it with the passenger side windshield. Progressive Insurance says it is not comprehensive but a collision issue so my one grand deductible is in play. I am still arguing with them but don t have high hopes. First stop in SC was Camden at a beautiful lake side park on Watteree Lake The town was 9 miles away but offered lots of fun activities and history. I learned a lot about Baron Johan dekalb an interesting Bavarian/French General who came over to help George Washington with his little skirmish against the Brits. Camden had a little parade of cool cars while I was there. They were all modified into interesting vehicles only rule was that you could not have more than $500 invested in the rig. The next day there was an endurance race where 80% of them broke down.

0Now I am in Charleston, the town I spent three years in while I was assigned to USCGC ES- CAPE. If you read HEAVE TOO you know about that. I am tied up at the home of the parents of one of the kids (now 61yo) who worked for me on ESCAPE. They have graciously allowed me to hook up to their backyard RV setup for 11 days. Here I have explored all my old haunts, sang in a few open mic venues, attend a Charleston Kiwanis meeting and hook up with Keith Gannett Commodore of Charleston Yacht Club to exchange burgees. This one is number two for the trip. I added it to my collection of one from Arundel Yacht Club in Kennebunkport Maine, the Bush s club. I visited Fort Sumter, a key piece of my book and was surprised to find that the four additional flagpoles besides Old Glory have been taken down. You can guess why. The rangers are not happy As a final event in this wonderful city, this afternoon I went to the Citadel Military University to watch the 3000 member Corps of Cadets Pass in Review, for their Friday afternoon parade. A very impressive group of young men and women. Whenever I do stuff like that it renews my faith in our future. I will be posting a couple pictures and a video or two of the event. Tomorrow I am moving on to the area around Beaufort SC and Savannah then on further south. I just booked a week at the RV park at Kings Bay Georgia. The park manager thinks he will hold a book signing event for me there. What fun! I expect my next edition will come from someplace in the Keys. Here are a couple of pictures of the journey:
