Happy New Years! I am looking forward to a great 2013 for our club. It sure would be wonderful to see more than just a few of you at the clubhouse for our planning meeting on Saturday January 5 th at 3pm. This is the time we talk about and schedule all the rest of the club events for the year. Your input is very important so it would be great to see a lot of you there. Once we get settled the club will call out for some pizza and I am sure the Rear Commodore Art will make sure we have something to wash it down with. Once the schedule is finalized, Kat our rental manager will be able to advertise and market the clubhouse to maximize our rental income. Do you know someone having a wedding or family reunion this coming year? KCYC is a great place for those events so make sure they know about us. January 17 th is our next general meeting. We have two new couples Mike and Diana Kingsley and Lin and Dorothy Harris who are getting ready to join us. They were at the club on the Friday when the world was supposed to end. I hope you can make it the meeting on the 17 th and get to know them. They should be there then we will induct them into the Club at the February meeting. Of course on the last weekend of the month January 25 th through the 27 th is our famous Polar Bear Cruise. (Yes, there will be a polar bear there. He lives on my boat) PC Jim Simpson and his team will be preparing a fantastic PRIME RIB DINNER for us on Saturday night. We will gather at the Edmonds Yacht Club for this. There is plenty of room at the marina in Edmonds for the weekend and if you want to land cruise, we can find RV parking and there is a great hotel nearby. On Saturday morning a bunch of us will be hopping on the train and heading to the Great Seattle Boat Show. PC Chris Heide is working on getting us free or discounted tickets for the show. I believe that Sallie has more details on this event in her Fleet Captain article here today. I want to thank everyone who came down to the club for our Christmas party and to help decorate the tree. We had a couple of great happy hour parties and Alan and Shelley did a wonderful little End of the World party when 12/12/21 showed up. But the world didn t end so come help us plan the year on the 5 th! Let s get together and make 2013 a KCYC year we will all remember Happy New Year! Commodore Pete DeBoer

2 Vice Commodore s Report Greetings from the Vice Commodore! I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season. I am writing my newsletter from snowy Spokane, where we enjoyed time with the Admiral's family. This was the 2nd year that the admiral and I attended the port Christmas lighting event and the first time we participated in the Yacht Club boat decoration competition. There were a lot of very festive boats along with cookies, snacks, and Christmas cheer. Thanks to everyone who participated for sharing your beautifully decorated boats with everyone. As is the tradition, the boat lighting was followed up with a chili feed. All the the different pots of chili were awesome. I tried to taste them all. Butch definitely had the hottest one. Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Yacht Club for the end of the world celebration and taco bar. Those of you who did not make it missed out on a fun time. A special thanks for all of you who partook in the drink special, "Mayan Sacrifice". Your sacrifices must have appeased the Gods because the world did not end. We are planning a few more events during the new year including a Mardi Gras party with homemade gumbo that the Admiral learned to make while vacationing in New Orleans. More ideas are always welcome. This past month, I replaced the rental lock box for the rentals so our facility renters will have access to their own key once again. The port fixed a leak in our roof that will ensure the wet weather stays outside of the building. I would like to thank Butch for getting the TV, phone, and new internet access organized and set up. Along with the internet access, we now have wifi available. See one of us for the password. Now that wifi is available, we were able to change the way we run credit cards. Butch donated an ipad that we will use with a card reader called "The Cube" to handle credit card transactions from the bar and ship store. This will reduce the amount of fees we were paying for running credit cards. 3 Rear Commodore s Report Happy New Year s Boaters! It s time to wrap up 2012, and hopefully you get to do it with a big bang! 2012 has turned out to be a very good year for the yacht club! We had a great turn out for our Commodore s Ball, Christmas Boat Lighting, and Chili Feed. Our End of the World Party was one for the books! A fabulous taco bar by Alan & Shelly was worthy of an award, not to mention our Mayan Sacrifice drink of the night, lit on fire by the lovely Cynthia (well at least we got the 151 lit!). I am pleased to announce that thanks to some great ideas from our members we have seen an increase in attendance and profits for our Friday Night Open Bar nights. A huge Thank You to all who have come up with ideas; Pete, Alan, Shelly, and Carol! If anyone has ideas for ways to make Fridays a little more fun (events, speakers, food, etc) please let me know! These nights are a great opportunity for us to socialize, take advantage of the benefits of our club membership, attract new members, and bring income to the club. No idea is too small! I would also really like to encourage everyone to get their bartender s license. Remember, you don t have to bartend for an entire night, the goal is to have enough people volunteer that each person only has to bartend for an hour or two a night. If you can come early and bartend for a few hours, someone else can take over and finish up and close. January s Drink of the Month is one sure to get all your 2013 celebrations off to a good start. Lava Lamps are a simple drink that will really stir up some action. In a medium bowl, stir together 1 3oz package of red instant Jell-O mix and 1 cup boiling water until completely dissolved, about 2 minutes. Stir in 1 cup vodka. Pour the liquid into small paper cups. Chill until set, at least 2 hours. Pour champagne into glasses. Break up the gelatin with a fork, and pour into a larger glass of champagne. 4 Fleet Captain s Report AHOY FROM THE FLEET CAPTAIN! Despite high winds, pouring rain and a shipwreck, we not only survived the Boat Lighting Event, we had 9 boats turn out beautifully decorated and filled with holiday spirit (and some had holiday spirits as well). We held down the tablecloths, cookies and hot chocolate with festive silver duct tape, huddled in foul weather gear and watched crews work on the boat trapped on the break water due to high tides and a recalcitrant anchor. We had the Aurora, Reflection, Nordic Queen, Silver Mist, Tenacity, No Remorse, Jolly Mon, and SeaDuction on the guest dock. The Shine was decked out but wisely stayed under cover at E Dock. (Please let me know if I missed any hardy captain who braved the elements with us.) Commodore Pete decided against parading our Festive Fleet in the wind, tides and current lest we risk adding more shipwrecks to the breakwater An extremely informal discussion at the December Board Meeting gave highest honors to the decorators of the Aurora, Jolly Mon, and Tenacity. ALL boats, however, were stunning. Chile and offerings from the bar were especially welcome after the lighting ceremonies. (Thank you, Cynthia Hammond, Shelly Kester, and Al Kester for bartending.) If you attended and tried the chile, let me know which one you preferred. Just describe it. The styles were individual, so I should be able to get another extremely informal sense of who our champion chefs were. ( response to wordstitcher430@gmail.com or text ) This is no Foo Foo Fleet, so we will be underway to Edmonds January 25, 26, and 27 th, for our Polar Bear Cruise. Let me know if you need moorage ASAP. This will be my first dockside Captain s Bar, so also let me know what your favorite beverages are. (Hot Toddies are sounding pretty good for a cruise with polar bear in the name.) I ll be stocking up for the year the first week in January. Of course, you could also cruise on a ferry and join us for the evening on Saturday, January 26 at the Edmonds Yacht Club an easy walk from the ferry docks. Accommodations are available nearby if you d like to spend the night; more details to come via . Past Commodores Todd Lachelt and Jim Simpson will prepare a prime rib dinner including wine at the tables and a nohost bar for $25/person. Tickets are available at the bar at KCYC or through me. A group is forming to go to the Seattle Boat Show via train from Edmonds on Saturday, January 26. Our Commodore has details for those interested in the side trip. Be sure to save the weekend of February 15, 16 and 17 for cruising to Brownsville. At least, bring your Valentine to a Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by Tom and Linda Pickens at the Brownsville Yacht Club Saturday, February 16 whether you cruise in by boat or car. Please see the flyer in this issue of the Bosun s Pipe for more details. It s a 3-day weekend, so moorage will be available Sunday night as well. We ll have the Brownsville Yacht Club, and Shelly Kester s ipod for the weekend. Sallie Brown, Fleet Captain

5 Sunshine and Clouds By Carol Wetmore December was filled with some sunshine but lots of clouds. Cynthia Hilland is recovering from her hysterectomy and found out that she is cancer free now! That s great news!!! On the other hand, it s been a month of mishaps and a bit of sadness. Rick Eveleth had a pulmonary embolism and was rushed to the hospital. He also found out he had atrial fibrillation. He is recovering at home. Cynthia Hammon has been battling a series of sinus infections over the past month but still bartended and helped out tons at the club. Norm West is fighting cancer with lots of GUSTO! He is in his 3rd round of chemotherapy but he still comes to the club with a big ole smile and lots of hugs. Jerry Kirschner had a wicked accident with injury. He is recovering well per Nancy. And Marilyn Kutz fell and broke some ribs on Christmas. She was in the hospital. At the time of this report she was either going to rehab or going home. Check with Janice or David on that. Calypso Carol Wetmore Wrinkles Only Go Where the Smiles Have Been. Hello from the treasury! Hello from the treasury! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! In hope everyone has enjoyed the holidays! Club rentals have been picking up. Thanks to Katherine for all her hard work. We now have a cooking class renting the club monthly which will help the income. The Boat Lighting and Chili Feed was a big success with a large attendance for chili. Unfortunately we had fewer visitors to the guest docks for cookies and hot drinks due to the weather. The Annual Gift Exchange was a lot of fun this year with some very Unique gifts. Alan and Shelly s End of world taco party was fun. We have changed our phone provider but the phone number is unchanged. We now have wireless internet in the club. The password for members is: letsgoboating. There is a separate password for guest non-members: KCYCguest. This has also allowed us to have a new method of accepting credit cards that will save the club greatly on fees. Our KCYC checking account is getting low, so we need support from ALL members in attending Events, Social Evenings, and other club functions. This is YOUR club, please come out and support it. 13 January 2013 Member in the SPOTLIGHT is Dorothy Chambers!!!! AKA Ma to me..dorothy Chambers is the hardest working member in the yacht club along with her hubby Tom. She is the QUEEN of Kitchen Duty. She has spent more hours in the kitchen than most of us have been drinking at the bar! Just Sayin!!!! LOL! She has always been there when she is needed. Always volunteering to help in any way she can! I don t know how the July 4th Pancake Breakfast could make it without her! Work.Work..Work...that s Dorothy. She also spends way too much time on the calls to members getting info out about upcoming events. Hey...she could use some help in that department for sure. So this month we celebrate Dorothy Chambers...my Ma! Congrats Ma! We Love Ya!
