I hope most of you are reading this from your boat as you are cruising the San Juan s, Puget Sound or just enjoying a cool beverage on your deck. Unfortunately Jovita and I have not had a chance yet to venture far but still find time to enjoy the boat locally as time permits. It is very nice to see a lot of new members joining the club, We welcome you all and look forward to all the fun we can have together at this great club!! This last month we had a few great events. We had a BBQ and General Fund auction that although the crowd was smaller then desired turned out to be a blast. I tried out my amateur auctioneering skills and managed to auction off a little over $400. Thanks to my wonderful auction assistant Carol Wetmore, all that assisted, and everyone who donated all the great items!! The next day Cheryl put on a fabulous Golf tournament followed by a Louisiana style crab feed. I couldn t make but besides the rain it sounded like everyone had a great time. On the Fourth of July we once again had a lot of fun putting on a pancake breakfast. I would like to especially thank our resident experts, whom help us put this on every year, Tom & Betty Davies and Tom & Dorothy Chambers. After this event they pledge that they are officially handing over the Spatula. Here is a list of all the other wonderful volunteers who helped out at the pancake breakfast: Jorge & Peggy Fuentes Allen & Shelly Kester Butch & Sallie Brown Will Blethen & Jan Erickson Pearl Sabota Shannon English Greg Faust Ray Wetmore Diane Lenz PC Jim Simpson Cheryl Callais & Todd & Jovita Lachelt. The next event that we had only brought in a handful of dedicated members. That was our Road Cleanup and Club cleanup event on July 15 th. Although the rain kept us in the clubhouse, we managed to thoroughly clean and reorganize all the kitchen cupboards and drawers, wash all windows, thoroughly clean behind the bar, and due a deep cleaning of other interior parts. My wife Jovita was busy weeding the front of the club as that is her specialty. Thank you all that lent your time to make the club a beautiful place!! They were: Pearl Sabota, Butch & Sallie Brown, Sonny & Penny Sanzaro(just inducted), Cheryl Callais, Kathy Showman, Tom Chambers, Rick Eveleth, VC Don Sparkman, Jovita Lachelt, and I. I would like to announce that unless a member is willing to head up the scheduled BBQ/Hot summer nights event on August 11 it WILL be cancelled. I will be on vacation and we just need all members to share in the duties of hosting a event. The board over the last couple years have stepped up to try to make as many fun events as possible but as a VOLUNTEER club we need all the help we can get, Please lets all lend a hand and help host a event, Once you do it you will realize how much fun it is. It s not hard to do, just contact a board member or member that has done it before. We are happy to assist!! We are looking for a volunteer with a green thumb who would be willing to help maintain the flowers in front of the club. Contact Dorothy Chambers if interested.

Page 2 (Commodore s Report Continued) Last but not least it is getting near the end of the boards term. If any member meets the criteria listed in the bylaws to be a officer or trustee and have not been approached yet, please contact the head of the nominating committee Bob Lee ASAP. That s all from the helm, Todd Lachelt, Commodore Vice Commodore s Report Greetings from The Vice Well August is here and we have had 4 days of sunshine. The E- Board is in the process of re-writing the club rental policy. We have had some of our members using the special club member rate for their friends and business ventures. This rate was set-up as a privilege to all club members, not to be abused for self gain or profit. Club rental income is up quite a bit over last year and we want to keep this up. It's hard to believe that elections are just around the corner and that a year has gone by. Our club has grown and progressed in the past 3 years. We have gained some great new members with some fresh ideas. There has been some talk of one of our past commodores taking that position next year. I believe we have some newer members that are very qualified for this position. This is the route I feel the membership should take. Our rules state that e- board members are to work their way through the chairs. This has been disregarded in the past and has set precedence. As a group the membership needs to look within for that person to elect who will take us forward. On a lighter note, I would like to put together a offclub site Beach Party Cookout. Maybe at that small park on the bay in Kingston or somewhere else locally. Something geared more towards a family atmosphere. Any ideas or someone willing to help contact me. Thanks, Don Sparkman, Vice Commodore Rear Commodore s Report Musings from the Rear Commodore.. I was chatting with my daughter the other day and she reminded me that fall classes at WSU are starting in 3 weeks. Here I am still waiting for summer to start and Christine s summer is almost over. So get out there and get boating. Before you know it, you will be asking Tom Chambers to knock the snow off your boat. The Admiral and I cruised over to Edmonds last Friday with the Silver Mist and Sea Duction for a weekend on the boat. After loading provisions onto the No ReMorse, we headed out. The seas were angry that day my friends. At least Shelly and Sally thought the seas were rough. I just griped the wheel, laughed into the wind, and shouted bring it on. We departed Kingston with the Silver Mist a few minutes head of us. Leaving the marina we could see the Silver Mist bobbing along in large swells. The Silver Mist radioed to us should we turn back and wait it out? I of course said that this is nothing; I have seen much worse. (Of course that was on a very large naval vessel.) I stole a quick glance at the Admiral, who had a terrified look on her face and was holding on for dear life, smiled a knowing smile and said to her this will be no problem, just a little rockin and rollin. So off we went and now we are calibrated to handle adverse weather in the waters of the Puget Sound. The Admiral of the Silver Mist was happy that she was also calibrated to handle the weather. All in all, it was very nice (and short) cruise to Edmonds and a very relaxing weekend. News from the Spirit Locker: I would like to remind all members that the Yacht Club is a volunteer organization and we all need to volunteer. The simplest way is to bartend on Friday night or at the General meeting. If we do not have anyone to bartend, the bar will not be open. Remember, the bar does generate a good amount of income to the club. On-line bartending license course: Thanks to all who bartended this month: Cheryl Callais and Kathleen Kutz, Alan Kester, Pete Deboer, Shanon English, Shelly Kester, and Cheryl Callais. Drink recipe of the Month: THE PINK FLAMINGO Here is a drink that will definitely cool you off this summer. This drink is not only delicious, it is healthy too! Well it has some fruit and juices in it anyway. Start by "muudling" some fresh mint and half a lime in a shaker. When sufficiently pulverized add 1 1/2 oz. Malibu coconut rum, 2 oz. Ruby red grapefruit juice, and 3 oz. Sprite. Stir well and strain over a glass of ice Garnish with a mint sprig and enjoy! The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. - William A. Ward Alan Kester, Rear Commodore

Sunshine and Clouds By Carol Wetmore Page 3 This past July wasn t the best month for Sunshine in the weather or in our personal lives. I broke a bone in my foot and leg. BUT, I have my boot off and am healing well. Then Greg Faust was in an accident involving his truck. Thank God it was his truck that was totaled. Not him! A speedy recovery for Greg as he heals from his ordeal. Notice is hereby given pursuant to Article III, Paragraph 2 of the KCYC Bylaws that the following named individuals have made application for membership in the Club: Family Membership: Sandy and George Morgan (Sponsored by Jerry Kirschner and Nancy Langwith) Remember if you know of anyone who needs cheering up from an illness or a death in the family, contact me. You can me at: kingstoncoveyachtclub@yahoo.com or call home at (360) and leave a message. Calypso Carol Wetmore Wrinkles Only Go Where the Smiles Have Been. KCYC Golf Scramble I want to say thanks to all of the golfers that played this year! The weather was bad, but the company was great! We weathered the storm and persevered!! We had 34 golfers and lots of Jell-O shots to help keep us in good spirits! Following the tournament was an amazing Dungeness Crab dinner with prizes for all of the players! Thanks to Alan and Marilyn Kutz for help putting this together, Tom and Dorothy Chambers, Tom and Bette Davies and Kathleen Kutz for cooking, cleaning and bartending. A special thanks to Kathy Showman, Todd Lachelt and the unknown man on the dock who helped clean all of the crabs he was a lifesaver for us novices!!! 1 st place team: Rick Rayment; Pat McLaughlin; Tom Snyder and Larry Todd (hopefully all future members) Closest to the Pin: Becky Garret & Rick Rayment Longest Drive: Becky Garret & Ron Eliason Last Place: Bruce, Pete Deboer, Larry Bartholomew and Christy Snoops Marshmallow drive: Shannon English Kids Club Drive: Larry Bartholomew Also a Congratulations to Adela Lucas - it was her first time on the golf course...and she said she enjoyed it! (or was that the Jell-O shots talking???) Hope to see all of you again at next years tournament!! Cheryl Callais Vessel: First Bite Any comments regarding the acceptance of the above applications should be directed immediately to Commodore Todd Lachelt or any Board member. Cheryl Callais, Secretary Treasurer Report: July has been another good month for KCYC. The membership drive has finished with the addition of many new members to our KCYC family. The yearly dues invoices are still coming in and all but a few members have paid. Please send in your dues if you have not done so this year. We have had several great events in the last month. Thank you Cheryl Callais and your crew for putting on the Golf Tourney & Crab Diner. Also Tom and Bette Davies & Tom and Dorothy Chambers and their crew for an outstanding 4 th of July Pancake Breakfast. Last, but not Least, Todd and Jovita Lachelt ran the annual General Fund Auction. These three events brought in over $ to the club. (The Treasurer personally thanks you all). A lot of fun was had for all at these events. We look forward to seeing more members come out to the Friday Night Social. We know as the weather warms up, there are a lot of options for your time, but come out to the club and meet new and old members and friends. Check the club calendar often, as new events are often scheduled with short notice. If you have contact information changes, please let us know ASAP. Thank you! Regards, Butch Brown, Treasurer

KCYC Upcoming Events: August 11th - Hot August Nights (bar-b-que)- looking for a member to take on this event otherwise it will be cancelled. This event can be whatever you want it to be and others will help. September 15th - Comedy Night - see Pete Deboer for tickets as they sell out fast. October 18th - General Meeting - Election for new Board Members October 20th - Commodores Ball October 27th - Halloween Party!! It's never too early to start thinking of costumes!!

Ahoy from The Fleet Captain! Dockside again to Bell Street was outstanding. Great turnout, fantastic water and even some sun. It's always a treat to view the changing Seattle skyline from there. The Market, Baseball, dueling piano bars, the Wheel, shopping, Ghost walk tours and great friends. August finds us heading to Victoria August 2nd - 7th. Pete called Wednesday (July 24) and is already up there. He just tied up in Fisherman's Bay, Lopez... cruising Friday Harbor, Poets Cove, Sidney, then meeting us for the Splash Festival in Victoria on Thursday Aug 2. Past member Don Knipe in the Reef Raider will be there along with Linda and Tom Pickens on the Linda Lou. Anyone else? Be there early, we are each on our own. Dock space is tight but they refuse no one. Labor Day Cruise (Aug 31- Sept 3) to Bremerton was reserved back in January. Slip assignments were confirmed mid- July. We are sprinkled a bit around permanent moorage tenants but are all grouped pretty close together on "D" dock. They may be able to tighten us up a bit if more tenants vacate. Port of Bremerton has these slip assignments: Linda Lou D32, Blue Moon D 34, Phantom Seahorse D36, Silver Mist D38, Shine D40, Deni Lee D42, Tenacity D33, Tiarafied D37, No Remorse D39, Beach Bouy D41, Jolly Mon D50, Highlife D48. There may be a slight overhang on the 42 foot docks for the Linda Lou and Blue Moon but everyone else should fit in 36, 38, 40 foot slips (see harbor layout on line for locations) Tide tables are also listed on their website. A slack tide approach is recommended. We will be getting you more info on planned Fiesta Party for Sunday Sept 2nd. Plan Friday night and Saturday for an Appetiser to share. The Bar will be open! No Boat...not a problem. Two years ago, We got a room Dockside above the BlackBerry Festival for $109/ night, Breakfast included. That was far cheaper than fixing un-expected boat repairs. Fall Cruise Sept 28-30th is confirmed for Everett North Harbor with Party Dock. Oktoberfest in the Beerlands of Everett.. Room for boats in the new Marina. The Scuttlebutt Brewery will share their party room with us on Saturday Night, Sept 29th. First Mates...talk your skipper into taking you out to dinner. Never an issue on the Linda Lou but Jolly Mon may have to trade some services! I can finalize your plans on the Labor Day Cruise. Land lovers, there is room for Motorhomes, just contact the Port of Everett or have it craned onto the Party Barge. Bring a dingy, some rain gear, and a fog horn! A dingy cruise to Jetty Island or up river is a must. Be Safe Cruising Your Fleet Captain (see picture on wall to see what I look like!) Greg and (Sandy) Sarvis... onboard the "Tiarafied"

INTO THE SUMMER by Tom Davies Now the exciting Fourth of July parade is history and life has returned to normal. Pondering the parade: besides the beautiful logging truck and dump truck procession followed by a stream of politicians, I think the dogs certainly stole the show. Kingston is a dog town--most all my friends have one. Have you ever wondered why dogs are called Man s best friend? Dogs love to have your friends come over and don t mind if you use their shampoo. A dog s time in the bathroom is confined to a quick drink. They don t expect you to call if you re running late, in fact the later you are the more excited to see you. Dog s parents never visit, they love long car be and they understand instincts are better than asking directions. Dogs like it when you have lots of things on the floor, You never have to wait for a dog they are ready to go 24 hrs. They have no use for flowers, cards or jewelry and never borrow your shirts. When a dog gets old and starts to bite incessantly you can shoot it. Dogs don t shop. But we do shop--nearly every day. When we have too much time on our hands we visit the store. Normally a gallon of milk costs $89, all of the items being carried by hand since a grocery cart was not essential for one item. I actually like to read labels and was amazed at what I saw. For instance a bag of Fritos displayed You could be a winner! No purchase necessary. Details inside. (The shoplifter special) On a bar of Dial soap. Directions: Use like regular soap. (And that would be how?) On Nytol sleep aid Warning may cause drowsiness (Really) On Marks and Spencer bread pudding Product will be hot after heating (are you sure; let s experiment)on Tesco s Tiramisu dessert (printed on the bottom of the box) do not turn upside down. (Too late! You lose!) On some Swanson frozen dinners Serving suggestion: Defrost. (but it s only a suggestion) On a Korean kitchen knife Warning--Keep out of children (or pets! What s for dinner) Coming through the soup aisle I always wondered if illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet soup. Oh well INTO THE SUMMER Leaving you with this thought--two wrongs do not make a right but three lefts do.

July 4th Pancake Breakfast (AKA Tom Davies Annual Pancake Cookoff)

Kathy Showman August member in the SPOTLIGHT is Kathy Showman! What can I say about Kathy Showman! Dedicated Daughter, Mother, Grandmother, Flight Attendant and my favorite..extreme Party Girl!
