1 S PRING Taberna Way New Bern, NC T aberna Taberna Tigersharks New Swim Coach The 2018 Taberna Summer swim season is right around the corner. In anticipation of hosting the Tigersharks swim team again at the Club, we welcome our new swim coach, Sgt. Tyler Treadway, USMC. Tyler was introduced to the Club because of his passion for coaching. He is currently coaching the New Bern Flames, the travel baseball team. A K-12 Physical Education major in college, Tyler was (and still is!) a competitive swimmer; he qualified for the USA National Swimming Championships and was the NC State Champion in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 butterfly, and 200 butterfly. He also had the Olympic Cut times for the past Olympic Games. Tyler currently serves as MCAS Cherry Point s Marine Corps Instructor of Water Survival for the entire Base; as a certified swim instructor, he has taught children for the past 10 years ranging from water confidence level instruction (babies from 1 3 years old accompanied by a parent), toddlers up to teenagers. Not only will Tyler be the Taberna Tigersharks swim coach, he will be offering swim lessons at the Club to members of all ages. If you are interested in the Taberna Tigersharks team for this summer, mark TWO important dates on your calendar: registration is Sunday, April 29, from 5-7pm at the Club. Tyler will be on hand to meet our parents and swimmers. Then, Friday, May 4 from 6-7pm is a mandatory parents/coach meeting for the 2018 season. Taberna Country Club members pay $125 coaching/supplies fee for the first child and $110 for subsequent children. W elcome to Springtime in Taberna!

Ed is the Director of Spiritual Life at The Epiphany School and they co-pastor Broad Street Christian Church. This seminar is free to all Taberna Country Club members who have a Wellness, Wellness Plus, or Full Golf Membership; otherwise, there is a $10 seminar fee. As announced on the front cover of our February member newsletter, our new Executive Chef, Mike Lynch, hosted a menu tasting night on February 28. This afforded Mike the opportunity to reach out in a personal way to give a hint of the menu ideas that he is considering for both lunch and dinner. This was a working night for Mike, as he and his kitchen staff crafted a sampling of three lunch and three dinner proposals (and dessert, of course) for the attendees. With the intimate setting, Mike was very encouraged that he was able to receive one-on-one feedback from our members as to what they enjoyed, what they would change, and some suggestions on future menu items to consider. Mike will continue to host this type of event, where he intends to showcase seasonal menu offerings, to connect with as many of our members as he can over food, his favorite thing! As many of you already know, Menu Tasting Event... Mike is accessible to all our members, visiting the dining room during every evening and often during lunch to engage our members about their food experiences here. Please feel free to stop by any day Tuesday through Sunday to welcome Mike!

3 Furniture Facelift in Taberna s Dining Room- Over 20 member volunteers donated their valuable time and talents on a sunny weekend in February to renovate the Club's dining room tables and chairs, giving them a much-needed facelift. The result of their hard work and many, many hours of donated labor was immediate and a huge improvement in the aesthetics of the Club's dining room, transforming the space into a crisp, clean and stylish gathering space for our members. The Club cannot express enough gratitude to each and every one of the volunteers and their leader, member Jason Raper, who organized and coordinated the entire project - from start to finish. Jason also painted every single chair on his own, tirelessly overseeing the smallest of details during the project. This endeavor truly took a village and the Taberna member village stepped forward to make it happen. Thank you for helping with this huge project; it would not have been possible without the dedication of the members who took part.

4 Chalk COUTURE On Tuesday, April 24, Taberna will host the tennis competitors from The Neuse River Senior Games and Silver Arts. In the past, up to 25 tennis players have competed in the games, & Taberna Country Club hopes to have at least that many Playing on our courts, starting at 9am. News from the Golf Pro Welcome Back, Kraig! Pictured above are some of the folks who came out last month to welcome Kraig Butler, our returning pro, back to Taberna.

We look forward to the golf season ahead and renewing friendships as well as our golf games! Hello to all of our Taberna golfers, It finally looks like spring is in the air.

As a way to kick off the new golf season I would like to go over some helpful hints that will make our golf course the best it can be.

Especially around the greens. Those areas can get awfully tight after only a few carts roll through. I, for one, need all the grass under the ball I can get.

It was great to see such a good turnout Kraig seemed to enjoy meeting old and new friends that evening.the club provided a lovely array of appetizers and there was a cash bar. We look forward to the golf season ahead and renewing friendships as well as our golf games! Hello to all of our Taberna golfers, It finally looks like spring is in the air. So join me and wishing old man winter a fond farewell. I can see hints of green in the fairways so I am encouraged that better days are ahead. As a way to kick off the new golf season I would like to go over some helpful hints that will make our golf course the best it can be. Obviously the less traffic we have in the fairways and rough, the better the grass will be. By doing this, it will help the grass stand up giving us better hitting surface. We can help by doing a couple of simple things: keeping the number of carts in our group to no more than two on cart path only days this rule isn't too important; also, trying to keep on the cart on the cart paths as often as possible. But if we all make an effort to get back on the concrete as much as possible, I guarantee we will see a difference that we will all appreciate. Our never ending goal is to make sure everyone has a positive experience at Taberna. And we want to put our best product out there for you and your guests to enjoy. 8 TABERNA GOLF LEAGUE NEWS SPRING 2018 TMGA NEWS MARK FARLEY Can you believe it? Even the northerners here at Taberna have been overheard saying When will this winter ever end. Even by North Carolina standards, it was a long wet chilly winter. With the weather now breaking it is good to see that many of us have not succumbed to cabin fever. In fact, three of our members are off to a really good year. Charlie Webb, Tim Tabak and Rich Ilsley have all carded hole in ones. Rich Ilsley s hole in one was the smartest. He accomplished this feat on a Saturday when the bar and dining room were closed! He was heard saying that in lieu of a free drink, everyone playing that day would receive a $5.00 check in the mail. I m still waiting. Our new 2018 season started March 7th. The event was a Modified Scramble with luncheon and beer following. The team of Doug Uhland, Terry Smith, Thomas Whitty and Bob Dellorfano took top honors at 13 under par. There were four teams one stroke back. It has been suggested to me that I mention in this article, that all players are responsible to fill in their divots, repair ball marks, rake traps, obey the exit signs and scatter your carts. Maintenance on the range of filling in our divots is also our responsibility. All these items are there to benefit all, as they help maintain the playing conditions. Perhaps, we can t improve the conditions as we play, but we can sure make them worse! The greens committee members are working to improve course conditions. They are constantly observing the course conditions and making recommendations to management. All while getting unwarranted criticism. They had no control over the weather and the effects of Mother Nature. Constructive criticism and fresh ideas are welcome. They are happy to listen when you have a good delivery. Kudos to the tournament committee for experimenting with the tee placements. They are attempting to ensure this game is fun and fair for all. Now that the TMGA fall/winter season is over I would like to thank Mel Walczak and Larry Narolis for their efforts to keep us all playing as much as possible. Since we are now entering the regular golf season, I just wish to remind everyone that on any Wednesday if you are not participating in the TMGA event, you will have to obtain tee times starting after the TMGA plays through. This is how it has always been. This also facilitates the grounds crew in their efforts to maintain the course. Lastly, our injured reserve list: Dale Swan is back home recuperating from his recent surgery. Bill Culipher, Bo Wernersbach and Glen Killian are at home on the mend. We wish them a speedy recovery. Prayers would especially be appreciated for their significant others. ooooooooooooooooooo TWGA 18-HOLE LEAGUE JULIE JONES We were graced with a few great, hopeful days of Springand Summerlike weather during the last two weeks of February. Naturally, many of us were delighted to get out on the golf course to play it was wonderful to see the course and the clubhouse bustling again! The 18-Hole Tuesday League women had their Spring Meeting on Tuesday, February 20th, followed by the General Meeting of all the TWGA women and dinner. At the meeting, presided over by Pat Baader, our new TWGA President, we talked about the coming golf season and signed on for different committees and events. On Thursday, February 22nd, Lisa Durante, leader of the Saturday 18-Hole Ladies League, hosted a party for all the 18-Hole players at her house. It was loud and friendly, the food was delish and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening tremendously! Thanks so much, Lisa, for your gracious hospitality! The Tuesday 18-hole league will start this year on Tuesday, March 13th. The Saturday 18-holers will start their season on Saturday, March 24th, since the Opening Day Tournament is slated for Saturday, March 17th. The season will run until November 13th (Tuesday) and November 17th (Saturday). If you haven t already, you may sign up for the Opening Day Tournament at the desk in the pro shop or online through the Golfgenius portal. Betty Rovins and Debbie Walczak are the group leaders for the Tuesday league again this season and Lisa Durante is once again the leader for Saturday. We re looking forward to seeing everyone out on the course as well as in the dining room, the pro shop and tennis courts in the coming season! Fun at Lisa s!

We would like to welcome our new members: Peggy Beijen has been here for 4 years, and is looking forward to playing and having fun; Nancy Dillon, a new golfer, is looking forward to learning; Beth Larkin moved here from Dallas last July and is looking to improve her game, meet new people and have some laughs; Marianne McMillan has had a home here since 2008 and is looking to meet a nice group of ladies (she s in the right place); and Susan Narolis was a member of our group but has been working for the last nine years and is now ready to get back playing with us. Everyone is looking forward to our opening day March 13th! oooooooooooooooo ALL ABOUT YOGA AT TABERNA A significant back injury in 2012 led Ally to yoga as a method to heal and strengthen her back. After experiencing yoga's beneficial results for herself, she felt called to share it with others. Certification was the obvious next step so Ally began her training as a yoga instructor. Now with several trainings complete she would love to share her love of yoga with YOU. She has been teaching for almost 4 years and took over the Taberna Yoga program in August Classes are ALL levels and can always be modified to meet your personal needs and goals! On Mondays in April, Ally will be offering her yoga free of charge to all Members so that we can hope to encourage our Dining and Pool members to consider upgrading their membership to Wellness or above, which will get them 16 of Ally's classes a month for free. On these Mondays, weather dependent, Ally will be holding her classes outside on the back veranda, overlooking the lake. Fresh air, the sounds of nature, and mindful yoga - all at the Club! Regina Gemignani April 2018 Winter finally relented allowing us to start our season with a scramble on March 27th. Special thanks to computer wizard, Larry Narolis, who enabled our ladies to sign up online, and to Kraig Butler, who is ing our pairings and tee times. April 10th is aeration day so we will have an 8:30 am start time (that day only). Format will be a no-putt game so strokes are only counted until each player s ball reaches the green, then is picked up (so no putting). April 17th is play your own game format, and the following week we will be playing on Monday the 23rd due to an outside tournament being scheduled on our regular day. Start time will be back to 9 am, and since the kitchen is closed on Monday, lunch will not be available. April 30th is again play your own game format. There will be some special formats in May, including a Pink Lady game day so we hope more ladies will come out on Tuesdays. oooooooooooooooo
