The 122 vehicles invited to the concours represented the number of years from the resort s founding. In addition, cars from local clubs participated in the Fairway Club, an area adjacent the concours field, with more than 250 Porsches, Jaguars, Ferraris and of course, Mercedes-Benzes. There were 40 Mercedes in the Fairway Club with owners from 19 different Sections. Seven national officers, board members and regional directors attended including president, Terry Kiwala. A tent was set up for volunteers to talk about MBCA and answer questions about our club. There See Concours, page 2 President s Message Hello Triangle Section Members, Well, ready or not, summer is here! We had a great first half and I am looking forward to much fun in the second half, also. Since being elected president of Triangle Section I have been impressed by the number of members who continue to volunteer their help with various activities and duties. I want especially to recognize and thank Rob VanDewoestine for the outstanding job he has done as Tri-Star newsletter editor. With four-plus years of keeping members well informed, Rob is ready to take a break and let someone else assume the editorship. So, the next time you see Rob, please thank him for his service and / or send him an thank you to rvandewoestine@nc.rr.com. Fortunately for us, Rob will continue to submit articles and Triangle events to the national web site. Rob did a great job in spite of little help from the rest of us contributing articles or other information for the newsletter. Consequently, we are going to more actively solicit members input for the newsletter; early results are reflected in this issue. You may have noticed that the format of this newsletter is different from the last one. People new to a position often bring their own unique style and I am excited to tell you that Vicki Wilson is now the Tri-Star newsletter editor and responsible for this second quarter edition. Vicki was newsletter editor for Tarheel Section before transferring to Triangle so she brings experience and creativity with her. Please thank her for taking over this very important responsibility. Her address is vickihwilson@me.com. See President s message, page 2

2 Concours, continued were 21 new members signed up that day and 24 membership renewals. Heavy rain had gone through the area the night before and there were intermittent showers in the morning. The tough grass and good drainage on the Pinehurst fairways, however, presented no difficulties in getting our cars placed on the field. By 10 a.m. the sun was out and it was a great day all the way through the concert by Sara Evans in the late afternoon. Two 1955 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwings received awards in the Post-War Closed class and a 1928 Mercedes-Benz Type 300 received an award in the Pre-War European Classics Class. Adding considerable variety to the Concours was a group of a dozen racing cars from the 1940s to the 1970s. In addition, Rick Hendrick brought three of his new super cars to the event; unfortunately (for our beloved Mercedes marque) they were Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren marques. President s message, continued I usually spend more time talking about the events and the importance of bringing in new members, but I felt that this was the perfect time and place to thank both Rob and Vicki for their efforts for ensuring members stay well informed through our quarterly newsletter. I also want to thank the many volunteers who made Pinehurst a wonderful success. (Details of Pinehurst and the other events are in this newsletter.) Members working the Fairway Club tent had a great time signing up 21 new members! At Saturday night s dinner following the concours, when I asked everyone who worked on the Pinehurst events to stand up, about 75 percent of the 60 plus members rose to their feet. THANK YOU ALL! Now, about the ads in this newsletter. These ads by our Dealer & Specialist Sponsors provide financial support that allows us to have more and better events for you. So, please make sure when you are visiting and buying from these sponsors to tell them you are a MBCA Triangle member and appreciate their support of our club. As a bonus, some of our sponsors offer special discounts for Triangle members, so don t forget to ask for them when you are there. As always, please bring a friend or associate to our events and sign them up as members! See you at the next event, Steve Some of the 40 Mercedes in the Fairway Club at Pinehurst Concours d Elegance. The famous Pinehurst Resort Club House is in the background. In the Pinehurst Concours d Elegance European Classics Pre-War Class, this 1928 Mercedes-Benz Type S, owned Robert Kauffman of Charlotte, earned the Pinehurst Award. 2

6 Triangle s Wilmington Division Hosts Tech Session Article and photo by Herbert Selbach Triangle Section Wilmington members hosted a tech session on April 22 followed by lunch at the Ogden Tap Room. Many area members attended using the meeting as a good excuse to enjoy a weekend at the beach. Franz Oberbauer (pictured right), a master technician at the Bob King Mercedes-Benz of Wilmington, informed the members about the importance of preventive maintenance. Using a variety of service parts, he demonstrated the difference between after-market and OEM. The topic led to an extensive exchange of experiences among the members. Franz also answered questions about specific issues members had with their Mercedes. Another presenter, Triangle member Josh Schwartzman, shared techniques and processes that he uses in his detailing business. 6

9 Pinehurst Weekend Provides Car Shows and More Article by Rob VanDewoestine Evening with the Stars An informal car show at Little River Golf Club and Resort Thursday evening, May 4, launched the Pinehurst weekend for MBCA members. Mercedes-Benz of Fayetteville (N.C.) sponsored the event providing 50 weekend early arrival members and guests the opportunity to mingle and trade car stories and advice before enjoying a classic North Carolina barbecue dinner. Triangle members shown from left are Tom Lewis, Nancy Goodman, and Barbara and Rob Van- Dewoestine. Photo by Vicki Wilson Photos by Tom Reedy Mercedes on the Green It is a tradition at the Pinehurst Concours d Elegance for a local car club to have a display of their marque the evening before the concours and this year it was the MBCA s turn. The Green in the center of mirror to the delight of this little girl. Village of Pinehurst provides an elegant venue for about any event, but the addition of fine motorcars, champagne with strawberries and piano music in the background made it a truly memorable evening. The Triangle Section set up a canopy to provide information for visitors and a focal point for the cars on display. There was informal judging for awards to be given at a dinner on the following evening. Several different sections of the MBCA were represented along with national officers so it was a good opportunity for members from a wide area to get acquainted and to introduce young visitors to their potential future cars. The participants went to dinner just across the street at Dugan s Pub to complete the evening. More Pinehurst weekend, page 11 9

13 N.C Museum of Art is Backdrop for Art with the Stars Article and photos by Dave Waters Friday, May 19, was a warm North Carolina day, a wonderful day to display Mercedes cars (but every day is that sort of day, warm or cold!). Eleven vehicles belonging to Triangle MBCA members, plus two new Mercedes from a dealer, were on display at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) in our Art with the Stars evening event. Windows were open, cabriolet tops were lowered, and Gullwing doors were open to let the balmy breezes blow and art patrons enjoy looking at our cars as members and guests enjoyed snacks and libations. The clouds began to look ominous and smartphones were deployed to see if we were going to get wet, or stay dry (didn t know we had so many weather prognosticators in our club). As it turned out, the evening was dry, and only the nervous raised tops and windows. Nineteen of us enjoyed dinner at the Iris Café in the NCMA, and enjoyed a great time of fellowship and conversation. As a follow-up to the Pinehurst event, Steve Redwine,Triangle president, presented Bill Faison vice president, with an award for all of his hard work in organizing and bringing to fruition a very successful MBCA Special National Event. In turn, Bill Faison presented Martin Little with the Cinco d Mercedes AMG Members Choice Award for his Mercedes on the Pinehurst Village Green Friday, May 5. As we were getting ready to be seated for dinner, a young woman asked us if we were giving ride-anddrives in any of our cars (She was especially interested in Fred and Kathy Hayes SL Gullwing.). She didn t get a ride, but as we left dinner she was getting her picture taken underneath the open passenger door as though she had just emerged from a ride. It was just a great and fun evening for all! Group photo above from left back: John Byrne, Nancy Goodman,Kathy Hayes; from right back Tom Lewis, Al Goodman, Barbara VanDewoestine, and Fred Hayes. 15 Cars and Coffee and Tech Session at Sevan Motorworx Article and photo by Dave Waters April 8 dawned cool, but a beautiful clear day for the Triangle MBCA Cars and Coffee and technical session held at Sevan Motorworx in northeast. Twelve club members attended, and along with the Sevan owners, technicians and other friends, about 20 total were in attendance. Members cars were displayed in front of the shop. Sam Sigarto had his supercharged 2008 E63 AMG and his 2002 Porsche GT2/ GT1400 on display, along with Phil Templeton s 2009 SL65 AMG Black Series, which was the center of attention. Steve Redwine brought his wife Pam s new acquisition, a 1995 E320 Cabriolet (nice!). Evan and Joe, the Sevan technicians, led the technical session, which was conducted in a question and answer format. Evan and Joe each have more than 12 years of experience (beyond their technical training) in servicing Mercedes and a variety of vehicles. In response to a member s question, they said that they did not have much experience with cars earlier than the 1970s, but were confident that they could apply their skills as mechanics and knowledge of how to research solutions to mechanical issues to work on earlier vehicles if one was brought to them. They were confident that they could perform many service and maintenance jobs for two-thirds of a typical dealer s cost for parts and labor. They typically warrant their service for one year. Following the technical session, Sevan provided a catered lunch of barbeque, coleslaw, scalloped potatoes, mac n cheese, and nanner pudding (that s banana pudding for those from outside the South). In all, it was a great event, and Dave Waters thought it was a fine way to spend his birthday, with friends and fellow car aficionados. 15
