1 CELEBRATING 23 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Sarasota Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - May 2015 President s Message Summer is upon us offering lower rates, earlier tee-times, and warmer weather. The SSGA would like to thank our guests from other chapters who visited this past season and we look forward to seeing you again. We are happy to announce that our Chapter has a new Members Meeting location. Our June 8 th and subsequent meetings will be held at the Bobby Jones Golf Course Club house Mattison s Grill restaurant. We will follow the same format as in the past, Board of Directors Meeting from 5 to 6 PM followed by the Membership social and meeting from 6 to 8 PM. The Mattison s venue offers more privacy, a tasteful menu and spirits to share with all. Have a great summer! ~Lana Craig Golf Past Events Palm Aire Country Club A fabulous day was had by 28 fun loving golfers at Palm Aire Country Club. The breeze kept us comfortable, the day was perfect and the course was in great condition. The one hour lesson prior to the shot gun start was attended by six golfers who learned a lot and were seen applying their new skills and loving it. Best Team score was carded by Gary Slavin, Betty White, Eileen Merchant and Linda Davis. Closet to the Pin prize went to Cliff Buck (no lady qualified). The Longest Drive winners were Tony Bacci and Janet Dean. Craig Talbert was delighted to win $58 in the 50/50 drawing. The food at dinner got rave reviews and evidentially the bread pudding and macaroons were just like "Mother" made! All in all everyone had a great time and as they said about Marshall on the Senior AM tour we "reduced golf to the simple elements: player, ball, grass, air" but at Palm Aire I noticed the SSGA members added a couple of other qualities...fun and friendship. Thanks to all for coming out for the glorious day. ~Clare Evers, Event Host Fore! Après Golf Dinner at the PACC Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Sacramento's Gold Country Weekend - June 5-7, Play in this beautiful setting in Northern California. 2 Sarasota Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association TM President Lana Craig Secretary Nancy Troy Golf Co- Chairpersons Laurie Lawrence Tatum Ridge We had 8 groups playing at the Tatum Ridge outing. The weather was good but the temperature got a little warm (maybe hot is a better description) throughout the day, which is why the snowbirds have been heading north lately. We played our own ball and most of us did a good job keeping our handicap number up. Micky Bernard hosted the event with Lynn Kramer & Jane Bruno assisting at check in. Jim Fitzpatrick and Lynn Kramer stuck it closest to the pin on the Par 3s to win prizes. Rick Krueger who is Treasurer for the Tampa Bay chapter also rattled a pin. Joan Colwell snaked in the longest putt. Micky Bernard finally nailed one for the longest drive. The 50/50 raffle was won by Bruce Haworth who is an Albany Chapter member. Lawrence and Brenda Tipton. We all enjoyed drinks and dinner served at the clubhouse after golf. ~Barbara Hopton, Event Host Ready to Tee Off! ~Micky Bernard, Event Host & Melissa Littlewood littlewood@verizon.net 1st Place Team Social Chairperson Sally Reeder sareeder@comcast.net Membership Chairperson Alice Elgrim alicefl@tampabay.rr.com Communications Chairperson Jim Johndrow Seadiver101@att.net Treasurer Mary Brown mhb190@gmail.com On Deck at Tatum Ridge Misty Creek Country Club Twenty golfers gathered on a perfect May afternoon to enjoy the natural beauty of the Misty Creek golf course. The group played the format of Best Two Net scores. The top two teams were recognized as well as closest to the pin on the par 3 holes. First place team was won by Tony Bacci, Mary Gibbs, Carol Drew and Karen Ohnmacht. The second place team members were Allen Brewer, Mary Buckley, Gary Slavin and Carol Drew. Two gals, Barbara Queller and Mary Gibbs and two guys, Larry Klotz and Tony Bacci, claimed recognition for closest to the pin competitions. The lucky lady of the day was Brenda Tipton who won the 50/50 drawing. Jim Johndrow and Barbara Hopton co-hosted the event and the following were willing workers: Debbie Berry, Linda Davis, Carol Drew, Laurie 2nd Place Team
3 Ready to Hit the Stoneybrook Stoneybrook Golf & Country Club Thirty lucky SSGA players enjoyed the challenging greens and well-kept fairways of Stoneybrook Country Club. Fun company, sun shining with a light breeze doesn t get much better. However, the fantastic brunch did add a special ending to our Stoneybrook golf day. This is, for sure, one to attend next time! Awards were given to the two lowest scoring teams. There was tie (get this at -36) so the golf pro had one player from each team do a putt to a plate on the floor. The 1st Place Team members were Lana Craig, Brenda Tipton, Gudrun Newman and Gary Slavin. The 2nd Place Team members were Clare Evers, Patricia Morris and Fred Weinberg. The Closest to the Pin prizes were won by Mary Brown and Jerry Fosco. The 50/50 kitty went to smiling Cynthia Borck! ~Pat Samuels, Event Host Golf Upcoming Events The Highlands Golf Club June 5th (Friday), 18 hole scramble. Please provide your full name, contact number and handicap or average score. Senior Golf Rules One of our members discovered some new rules for senior golf play that might be useful to us: Rule 1.a.5. A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the rough with no penalty. The senior should not be penalized for tall grass which ground keepers failed to mow. Rule 2.d.6 (B). A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there. Rule 3.B.3(G). There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging himself or herself with a penalty. Rule 4.c.7 (h). If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The Law of Gravity supersedes the Rules of Golf. Rule 5. Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game. Rule 6.a.9(k). There is no penalty for socalled "out of bounds." If penny-pinching golf course owners bought sufficient land, this would not occur.. The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty. Rule 7..G.15(z). There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior golfers should not be penalized for manufacturers shortcomings. Rule 8.k.9(S). Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment. Since this is financially impractical for many senior golfers, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.
