1 CELEBRATING 23 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association June 2015 President s Message Hi Golfers, Summer is upon us. For the most part, we have lucked out on the spring weather and enjoyed a lot of cheap golf. In May we enjoyed rounds of golf at Mt Si, Bellevue, Redmond Ridge, Meadow Park, and the planned outing at Lynnwood. With summer s arrival, the prices go up along with the temperature and chances of good weather. It's a tradeoff we are looking forward to, as some of our upcoming summer events are best of the year. Be sure to watch for upcoming announcements and signup early. Keep in mind that we have a garage sale planned for our next meeting on June 9th. Bring your unwanted golf equipment to the Noble Court. You never know what someone else will need or want. Our club is going to be well represented at the Gold Country outing near Sacramento in early June. While not golfing, I will be traveling that same week and will get back just in time for the June meeting. Can't wait to share travel stories. ~Ben Meadow Park Saturday May 23rd we had a perfect twelve show up to golf Meadow Park in Tacoma. It looked a little rainy at first but as forecast the weather held and a great time was had by all. The first nine KP was won by Mary Yax with a shot only four feet from the hole. The second nine KP went to Carole Leslie and keep in mind the tee boxes for men and women on this hole were side by side. Great job! Brian Lucarelli and Ben Watson shared the putting Nassau with Brian getting the bulk of the kudos. Brian only had 12 putts on the front nine and Ben did nearly as well on the back with 13. Everyone stayed for dinner at Foley's on the green which is a much better than average golf course restaurant. Great food and they provided a private room for our meal and awards. I want to give extra credit to the staff at Meadow Park. We had quite a few golf show half off coupons for this event but we came up one short. The staff elected to give our last two entrants half off so everyone was treated equally. We really appreciate that classy action. ~Ben Watson Wenatchee Outing I hope more folks will decide to join this year s expedition to Chelan, Wenatchee, and Leavenworth. We had made plans for six foursomes and have but three registered to date. The schedule is very open with informal pairings at Bear Mountain on Friday (we ll each pay when we get there, and I talked the pro into including range balls with our greens fees) and competition more organized Saturday at Highlander and Sunday at Leavenworth. Folks are welcome to join us for all three venues or just one or two. Do consider being a part of what has become a more-or-less traditional event on the other side of the mountains where the sun always shines (except when it doesn t) and where the courses are all pretty spectacular. (They really are.) Here s what you need to know: Make reservations for a room (two queen beds) at Cedars in E. Wenatchee - $119/night until June 10. Bear Mountain - Friday, June 26 - first tee time 11:30. Fee - $98 includes cart and range balls - pay at course Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Sacramento's Gold Country Weekend - June 5-7, Play in this beautiful setting in Northern California. Details at SinglesGolf.com/GoldCountryWeekend Denver's Rocky Mountain High Weekend - August 13-17, Info at SinglesGolf.com/RockyMountainHigh Battle at the Boardwalk - Atlantic City, New Jersey - Fall, Details this Spring. It s going to be a fun outing. You won t want to miss it. ~Sally, A Day in the Life of Golf Lessons Play for the Fairway I recently returned from a fun golf trip with our students in Arizona. Golf course design depends on local terrain, vegetation and weather. I noticed several fairways with slope to the right or left. A drive down the middle could come to rest in deep rough. It s easy to think of always aiming down the middle of the fairway. Consider landing your drive where it can come to rest in the fairway. This might mean aiming at the upper right of the fairway so it will come to rest on the lower left side. A good lie in the fairway is better than a ball nestled in thick rough. Set yourself up for a good second shot. Chances are, your next shot will have better results. Two putts and you make par! ~Chris Aoki, Golf Professional A 5 Hour Walk Turns Bad. The Doctor is a Bit Worried... During my physical examination, my doctor asked me about my physical activity level. I described a typical day, Well, yesterday afternoon, I took a five hour walk about 7 miles through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake. I pushed my way through brambles. I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I avoided standing on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I took a few leaks behind some big trees. The mental stress of it all left me shattered. At the end of it all, I drank eight beers. Inspired by the story, the doctor said, You must be one hell of an outdoors man! No, I replied, I m just a crappy golfer. ~Compliments of Sandy L Allier About Our Members Happy Birthday to these members: Mary Baebler - 06/26 Nancy Carmen - 06/05 Sally Hollister - 06/18 Jay Holman - 06/21 Karen Kohler - 06/06 Roger Wilson - 07/10 Timothy Witthauer - 06/20 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Cheryl Faires - 06/30/2015 Katy Jusenius - 06/30/2015 Barbara McDowell - 06/30/2015 These members recently renewed: Patricia Bonner Nancy Carmen Katherine Curry Cheryl Howlett Kathy Hutton These members did not renew their dues: (date shown is date membership expired) Jim Ollom - 04/30/2015 To renew your dues today, go to Singles- Golf.com/renew If you wish to renew over the phone, call , M-F, 9-2 Eastern Time.
