1 CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association July 2014 President s Corner Because I m in the dental field, I m used to working on people with their mouths full so I m used to having the floor and getting in the last word. Having the president s corner gives me the same privilege and it s refreshing to have a corner that you are not told repeatedly to stand in! I remember talking to a member of our group a while back and asking him if he was retired. He told me that he retired several years ago but this year he s unemployed. When people inquire as to when I plan on retiring I hedge on my commitment. How does one know if they are secure enough to quit the job and still play all the golf you want? I m on the swing by swing list and last week s feature was How do you know if you re a golf-aholic? I m afraid to open the article! Too much golf sounds like a contradiction and many of our unemployed/retired members would agree. Our club is lucky enough to have members that share their love of golf by setting up casual events at local courses in addition to formal events that include overnight stays at some outstanding locations. Hats off to George Weller for his organization of the Montana trip this year and the Canadian trip last season. Thanks as well to Mary Jo, Stu, Cassie, Virginia, Florence, Sandy, John, Karen, Pat Walsh, and Brian for hosting events this spring and summer. Ben Watson has scheduled several informal outings at local courses as has Pat Bonner. We had 30 people in attendance at our last chapter meeting and 20 participants for golf at Bellevue Municipal prior to the meeting. The weather has been cooperative and we have a great up-coming golf schedule. Next month I get to pontificate about my own excursion, the Coeur d Alene trip, in September. Thank you all for your enthusiastic participation in the club. ~Lynn Johnson, President A Day in the Life of Golf Lessons Dilemma: In-Between Clubs Rules determine the decisions we make in playing golf. It's definitely an advantage to know some of the common rules to know your options and plan strategy. Do you occasionally stand on the tee and wonder whether to use a 7-iron or an 8-iron? On the teeing ground, you can tee up your ball up to two club lengths back from the tee markers. This will take care of the dilemma of being in-between distances. It is more difficult to hit an easy 7-iron or swing harder at an 8-iron than teeing a little farther back from the markers and making the same effort of golf swing that you normally would. ~Chris Aoki, PGA Golf Teaching Professional Meadow Park A perfect twenty golfers showed up Saturday for perfect weather at Meadow Park in Tacoma. The course treated us great by putting out KP signs and arranging for a special room for dinner. All that winter practice in Palm Springs paid off for Tab Bronson and Cheryl Faires, as they took front and back KP's respectively. Personally I found putting to be tough on this course but Stu Boyd and Larry Bash seemed to have no such problems. Stu took front nine putt honors with 13 and Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) ASGA in Scotland - July 24 - August 2, nights/10 days visiting St. Andrews, Gleneagles and Edinburgh, Scotland. 2 Seattle Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association President Lynn Johnson Chairman of the Board Carletta Barnes Vice President Ben Watson Secretary Sandy L'Allier Treasurer Karen Kohler Golf Chairperson Cassie Jacobson Handicap Chairperson Stuart Boyd Membership Co-Chairpersons Susan Mayon Nancy Carmen Social Co-Chairpersons Florence Solt John Sweeney Communications Chairperson Theresa Bronson Newsletter Editor Adrienne Moe Webmaster Patricia Bonner Larry got the back with 14. The team competition was won by Jan Freisen, Bob Strom, Mary Baibler, and Pat Bonner. Only one stroke separated first and second place so it was close. Congratulations to all. Thanks to all the participants for a wonderful day, ~Ben Watson Lynnwood Outing On Saturday June 7 th the ASGA invaded the Lynnwood golf course to demonstrate their dazzling golfing abilities. It was a beautiful day for June and got off to a fabulous start with Virginia DeVoe providing her special cookies. With such sustenance it was hard not enjoy the entire day. Once the ASGA golfers took the course, the police closed off the entrance to the course, declaring the whole course a hazard. People already on the course scrambled for shelter, as the ASGA started bombing away. This was a scramble event, which meant each team played the best ball of the four players. Each player on a team had to have at least three drives. We rarely have a scramble event at our ASGA outings, so this was a real treat for many of us, especially Brian Lucarelli. There was also closest to the pin for the women on hole four and for the men on hole sixteen. The teams were assembled by handicap in order to even them out by the clever Florence Solt, who as we shall see, managed to put herself on the winning team. On hole four the KP winner for the women was Pat Bonner. On hole sixteen the KP winner for the men was Bruce Benard. Bruce and I were in the same foursome and we both landed on the green on sixteen, but Bruce beat me by a couple of feet. Janet Swanson was also in our foursome and she also landed on the green on sixteen and beat both Bruce and I. Needless to say our male egos were badly bruised, as Janet claimed women rule. I say we move on to the scramble competition. The scramble competition was very close between the five teams with only six strokes separating first from last. It came down to the two final holes. The winning team needed a drive from Cassie Jacobson and Stu Boyd. On hole seventeen, a par three, Cassie drove the green. She then made her birdie putt. Now they needed a drive from Stu on hole eighteen. Stu s drive was the longest. His second shot landed on the green. He made the putt. It s a birdie!!! They birdie the last two holes and win the scramble by two strokes. I mean is there any justice in this world? The winning team members were Cassie Jacobson, Stu Boyd, Carletta Barnes and Florence Solt. The second place team was Tab Bronson, Ben Watson, Pat Bonner, and Susan Mayon. After golf we went to Romeo s restaurant for dinner where the competition results were announced, and George Weller enjoyed a few raspberry martinis. ~John Sweeney Bellevue Casual Outing It is becoming the normal for our group to golf a casual event before our monthly meeting. June's casual turned out to be our biggest yet with 21 golfers enjoying the course. A little sunshine did break through but for the most part, perfect temperature with no sun glasses needed. Odd as it may seem, we had more men than women turn out for the event and since the crowd was large, we played both women s and men s kp s separately. Odd again that the women just were not that accurate, probably awed by all the men. Since no women got on the front, the prize rolled to the second nine where Carol Whelan took top prize. Men s kp s were won by Bruce Bernard and Ron Voss. In the putting contest, we had three prizes. Low putts on the front nine was won by Ben Watson and low total for eighteen went to Lynn Johnson. The back nine was a tough battle as Terry Cowan, Terry Mead, Ron Voss, and Lynn Johnson all tied to split the pot. Based on how much fun was had, I expect our July round to be a sellout. Thanks to all for attending, ~Ben Lake Wilderness Hi Golfers, Just in case you missed out, here is a recap of our June 14th informal outing at Lake Wilderness. We had fourteen dedicated members make the trek out to Maple Valley. Once again the weather held, the after round food was good, and the course was in fine shape. KP's were won by Cheryl Faires and Tab Bronson. Putts were won by Bruce Bernard as his red hot putting took front, back and total. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all for attending. See you all in the second half, ~Ben
3 Montana Outing A hearty group travelled 700 miles to the Flathead Valley nested next to Glacier National Park. Some stopped to visit Ron Voss on his island near the Pend Oreille River. They were given the tour of his two apple tree orchard, his 1936 tractor and his lake where he raises trout, turtles and beavers. Sunday, June 22 nd, we played the Whitefish Lake Golf Course. The team low net was won by Carletta Barnes, Karen Kohler, Terry Mead, and Ron Voss. The individual player low nets went to Ron Voss (74), Karen Kohler (77), Lynn Johnson (84), and Larry Olson (85). We all enjoyed a prime rib dinner and strawberry margaritas afterward. Monday, June 23 rd, we played Buffalo Hill Golf Course in Kalispell. We had a 40- yard chipping contest which resulted in a tight contest: Lynn Johnson (4 ), Terry Mead (4 5 ), Ron Voss (5 ), and Carol Whelan (11 ). Low net went to Karen Kohler (66), Carol Whelan (75), George Weller (76), and Ron Voss (77). Tuesday, June 24 th, we played Glacier View Golf Course in West Glacier. Glacier View was a flat open course with the winding Flathead River flowing through. Between glimpses of the snowy peak and famous glaciers, we played some golf. KP s were won by Carol Whelan, Terry Mead and Carletta Barnes. Low net went HELP GROW OUR CHAPTER! New Members Are Our Lifeblood. Please print-out the Single? Play Golf? sign and post it where our future members will see it. Sign is on the last page of this newsletter and remember to cut the tabs at the bottom. (Try to post one sign each month and use bright yellow or colored paper if you have it.) to Lynn Johnson (69), Carletta Barnes (69) and Terry Mead (70). Wednesday, June 25 th, we played Meadow Lakes Golf Course. It was a beautiful course, partly lost in the forest and full of the unexpected. Everyone enjoyed a rag-tag putting contest with lots of ooh s and aah s and lots of fun. The team that seemed to enjoy the most success was George Weller and Larry Olson. After four days, we were showing wear. To bolster the body, limbs and spirit, we headed to Whitefish to Casey s Roof Top where we enjoyed ribs, wraps, cosmos, tonics, and huckleberry margaritas. That helped with the healing. Thursday, June 26 th, the venue was the highly rated Eagle s Bend at Bigfork, but clouds were gathering and the rain came. We all agreed to cancel and head home. Everyone arrived home safely and a good time was had by all. ~George Weller Auburn Outing Auburn Golf Course Event is fast approaching: July 27 th at 11 AM. Come join us and play some golf at Auburn Golf Course on July 27 th at 11 AM. There are going to be some great prizes, including a drawing for several rounds of free golf and Sandy s famous cookies. We have been encouraged by the course to keep our group moving, so please take carts, and, as most of you know, the back 9 has a big hill. Cut off is July 17 th so please send your checks to Karen at rd Ave SE, Bellevue, WA, $53 includes Cart. Hope to see you there. ~Sandy and Stu Golf Facts Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls... A recent study found the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud. Almost feel like a hybrid.
