1 CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association February 2014 President s Corner A new year and a new itch to get out and play golf. I can't drive past a golf course without straining my neck to see how many golfers are out there. Most of them look like normal people, however, I did notice a foursome on the 11th green at Maplewood just prior to the Seahawks championship game. I doubt they were from either Seattle or San Francisco. Our first event is coming up soon at Legion Memorial on February 16th at 11 o'clock. Our ever so faithful Mary Jo Eland sponsors this event every year. We wish MJ a speedy recovery from her hip surgery so that she can get out there and actually play. Our golf calendar for the year is starting to fill in. Virginia will be sponsoring Lynwood in March, George put Snoqualmie on the calendar in April, Karen is planning on setting up play at the Home Course in July and our ever so fun over nighter with Cassie features Avalon in August. Pat Walsh is also working on getting our Peninsula outing together in mid- August. Details will be forthcoming from George about his 4 or 5 day trip this summer to White Fish Montana, an easy train ride. I will be putting on a 4 day excursion to Coeur d Alene Idaho featuring Circling Raven. Golf will be less expensive this year, since golfers will bring their own snacks and competitions will be optional to be paid for at the course. Organizing events is becoming much easier. Just call the course and tell them you want 6 tee times (more or less) and would prefer a shotgun start. The more frequently we start together the more often we will be dining together afterwards. Golf courses are trending away from contracts so just let them know that you will adjust the reservation a couple weeks out if you have cancellations. If they insist on a contract, be sure to send it to our treasurer, Karen Kohler. She will look it over, sign it and send it back to the course with a copy for you. Pick a course and as they used to say on Hawaii Five O - -book em Dano! ~Lynn Johnson, President Season Opener Golf Outing February 16th Sunday, February 16 th kicks off the 2014 th season of the ASGA golf. We will be playing golf at the Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett. The first tee time is 11:00. The cost is $33.00 payable to ASGA. Mail check to Karen Kohler at rd Ave. SE, Bellevue, WA on or before the deadline of 2/8 to reserve your spot. Power cart rental cost is $15.00 per person payable at the course. There will be an optional competition. We have plans to meet at the Tulalip Resort Casino after golf. I hope this all makes sense to you as I am rehabbing from a total knee replacement and I am on some high powered drugs. When you see a really good golfer, you don t have to feel guilty about imagining the two of you golfing together. 8. If your regular partner isn t available, he/she won t object if you golf with someone else. 9. Nobody will ever tell you that you will go blind if you golf by yourself. 10. When dealing with a golf pro, you never have to wonder if they are really an undercover cop. 11. You don t have to go to a sleazy shop in a seedy neighborhood to buy golf stuff. 12. You can have a golf calendar on your wall at the office, tell golf jokes and invite co-workers to golf without getting sued for harassment. Next month: The final six reasons ~Submitted by Lynn Johnson Golf Update and Changes There have been some new changes for this year s golf season. The board voted to do away with the fee for snacks and prize money. This will cut the cost of golf this year. So please be aware that the event coordinator will no longer be providing snacks & water at the course. Each player will be responsible for his/her own. Because we will not be collecting the competition fee up front, the event coordinator will collect it at the course from only those who wish to be in the competitions. Also the club will no longer be compensating the event sponsor for putting on an event. Last week Carletta, Pat B., Ben & I went to Clubhouse Golf Center in Lynnwood and played a round of golf at Kapalua Bay. They offer 36 different courses like Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, etc. It was great indoor golfing experience. It would be fun to get a group together to play on a cold winter day. We have several golf outings on the 2014 GOLF CALENDAR for the upcoming season. So mark your calendars to save the dates. If you have a golf course that you would like to play or would like to sponsor an event please let me know so we can get it scheduled. Looking forward to a fun year of golf and entertainment. ~Cassie Jacobson - Golf Chair The Big Golf Match The Pope met with his Cardinals to discuss a proposal from Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Israel. Your Holiness, said one of his Cardinals, Mr. Netanyahu wants to challenge you to a game of golf to show the friendship and ecumenical spirit shared by the Jewish and Catholic faiths. The Pope thought this was a good idea, but he had never held a golf club in his hand. Don t we have a Cardinal to represent me? he asked. None that plays very well, a Cardinal replied. But, he added, there is a man named Jack Nicklaus, an American golfer who is a devout Catholic. We can offer to make him a Cardinal, and then ask him to play Mr. Netanyahu as your personal representative. In addition to showing our spirit of cooperation, we ll also win the match. Everyone agreed it was a good idea, and the call was made. Of course, Nicklaus was honored to be made a Cardinal, and agreed to play. The day after the match, Cardinal Nicklaus reported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of the result. I have some good news and some bad news, your Holiness, said the golfer. Tell me the good news first, Cardinal Nicklaus, said the Pope. Well, your Holiness, I don t like to brag, but even though I ve played some pretty terrific rounds of golf in my life, this was the best I have ever played, by far. I must have been inspired from above. My drives were long and true, my irons were accurate and purposeful, and my putting was perfect. With all due respect, my play was truly miraculous. And what s the bad news? the Pope asked. Nicklaus sighed. I lost to Rabbi Tiger Woods by three strokes. Winter Golf Tip When cabin fever gets to be too much, diehard golfers can t wait for those few sunny, winter days. Winter golf can be a little different than summer golf. The ball

3 doesn t carry as far and the ground can be a bit saturated with yesterday s rain. When you have a delicate 20-yard pitch shot to the back of the green, many golfers use the pitching wedge just as they would during the summer. When the ground is wet, the ball won t roll as much and guessing at how much carry will land the ball near the hole can be difficult. Try using a 6-iron. It might take a little practice, but the ball will roll easier and you may be able to use a shorter swing. You may also find ball contact in wet grass may be easier too. 5 ORLANDO S SUNSHINE FLING MARCH 21-24, 2014 We are returning to the beautiful Mission Inn Resort for the 2014 ASGA Orlando Sunshine Fling. Come enjoy the SUN and temperatures in the low 80's and evening lows in the 70's. We all had such a wonderful time in 2013 we decided to return for all the fun. Once you arrive all beverages will be HAPPY HOUR priced until you depart. That is the first new twist. We also added a second night of dancing in the lounge and pool deck area with games and pool tables.
