1 CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association April 2014 President s Corner I passed someone in a narrow hallway between the waiting room and operating area at work and he chirped out fore as we barely missed each other. Since my boss plays golf and so does the other hygienist, patients try to humor us with golf references; kind of like asking how s your wife doing before submitting to any dental torture. In other words, are you in a good mood today? Of course I am, it s spring, the sun is shining, my screen saver is showing the signature hole at Waikoloa Village in Hawaii, and I m getting distracted by the view out the big picture window and thinking about golf here in Seattle. Pavlov proved that if you give a mouse a cheese pellet every time he presses on the bar, he ll continue pressing 20 or 30 times to get that reward. I ve got it bad now all I have to do is clean my golf clubs or dial up Golf Video numbers and I start salivating. Our next outing is on the peninsula in Sequim and Port Ludlow and I can t wait. Chris Aoki sat at my table at our monthly meeting and I learned from her that the pros have an entirely different mind-set than we amateurs. Like sharks who instantly sense when their prey is weak, pros know when their opponent is about to get rattled. Chris was accompanied by her partner Kirk Smith and they talked to us about situational golf; example, what s inside your head when you have to make a decision about lofting it high or running it fast and low. What club do I use? Do I automatically use a short club for close up situations? The turnout at the Big Fish last month was tremendous. There was a casual golf event at Bellevue Muni prior to the meeting that spilled over into more attendance. Many thanks to Ben Watson for organizing that outing. We also had a new item on the menu and saw many faces that we had not seen in a while. As Yogi Berra would say, Déjà vu all over again! Gotta love the enthusiasm. President s Brilliant golf tip of the day: Don t speed up your game after a bad shot take a deep breath and clear your head before tackling the next one. We re still a bit short on spring golf events, so think about where you d like to play and sign up to host an event. ~Lynn Johnson, President Golf News and Sequim Event Our golf season is in full swing. We had a casual event sponsored by Ben Watson at Bellevue Municipal. The weather was great and fun was had by all that attended. Ben has scheduled an informal event to be held on Saturday, April 12th at Northshore Golf Course. Coupons for this event can be found in the Cascade Golfer Magazine and were also available on a flyer that was given out at the Seattle Golf Show last Month. Please contact Ben if you plan on attending. Our upcoming event is going to be the Sequim Event. We have approximately 16 golfers so far that are planning to attend. We will be playing the Cedars at Dungeness on Saturday April 5th and the Sunland Golf Course on April 6th.. We then are planning to head over to Port Ludlow for a casual event on Monday April 7th. There is still room for more so be sure to sign up by sending your checks to Karen Kohler. (Port Ludlow will be paid at the course). We still have room for more golf events this year. Anyone interested, please contact me. ~Cassie Jacobson at cjacobson13@yahoo.com Golf Chair Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Memorial Day Weekend - May 22-25, Colonial Williamsburg, VA. A Day in the Life of Golf Lesson Haven t played for a few months? Most golfers are not sure how to get started and sometimes start out with mistakes on the first day out. Muscles are not ready for golf swings after a few months layoff. First nice day you feel like getting back to golf, start with putting. Spend five minutes hitting short putts under three feet. Work on rhythm and tempo. Keep grip pressure light. Work up to six or eight-foot putts. Hit a few chips if you have time. Next time out, hit pitches for ten minutes then half-swings on the range. Go easy: Let your muscles and your grip get used to swinging. Then work your way into a full swing. You might save the driver until your next visit to the range. Happy Golfing! ~Chris Aoki Excuses: Why I have to go golfing! 1. Your son bought you a sleeve of golf balls 2. You bought yourself a sleeve of golf balls 3. You found a sleeve of golf balls 4. You have 11 clubs in your bag and your zodiac sign says 11 is a lucky number today. 5. You lost the head cover on your driver and your club head is getting cold 6. You lost your stocking cap and it reminds you of your lost head cover. 7. The sun came out. It s not still out but what difference does that make? 8. Free tees and ball markers at the golf course this week! Casual Outing on March 11 We had a beautiful day and a great turn out for what I hope is an ongoing event preceding our monthly meeting. We had eleven golfers competing in KP s, Low Net and Putts. KP s went to Pat Walsh at 7 feet from the pin on Number Three and Terry Mead at about 18 feet on Number Fifteen. Pat Bon- ner and Stu Boyd tied for low putts at 30 each and Stu also won Low Net at 71. After the round, most of us proceeded to our monthly meeting for food and drinks with our golfing friends. ~Ben Watson ASGA Bowlers Back in the Alleys Yes, incredible as it may seem, the ASGA All Star bowlers have struck again. This time in spite of the best efforts of the CIA, FBI, and Homeland Security, the ASGA bowlers infiltrated a new and unsuspecting location. On March 1 st the bowlers quietly slipped into the Acme Bowling Alley in Tukwila across from the South Center Mall. The Acme management was completely caught off guard. On can only hope that they will be more vigilant in the future. The bowlers used the demure and innocent looking Cassie Jacobson to reserve two lanes. Once the ASG bowlers took possession of the two lanes, it was too late for management to do anything. The ASGA bowlers only used a small contingent of bowlers in order not to raise any suspicions. They were led by their leader, the notorious Florence Solt. Also involved in this travesty were Ben Watson, the aforementioned Cassie Jacobson, George Weller, Bob Strom, Ron Voss, and John Sweeney. On lookout were Carolyn Handley and Greg Brace. Fortunately, there was no competition and therefore no scores were recorded for posterity. However, I must say that many people in the establishment were questioning exactly what the All Star bowlers were doing. Many thought that the All Stars were inventing a new sport, as they didn t recognize anything close to bowling. Unfortunately the automatic scoring system was there for all to see, so there was no hiding the scoring results. However, these atrocious scoring results can be explained, if we just delve a little deeper into the past issues these bowlers had faced prior to their taking up bowling as a means of therapy. Let s start with their leader, Florence Solt. Florence had always wanted, ever since she was a little girl, to be an Olympian shot put thrower. However, since she could only throw the 16 pound shot three feet, she just missed making the Olympic team. Therefore, her therapist suggested taking up bowling,
3 where you could roll the ball instead of throwing it. Ben Watson always wanted to be a doctor and Sherlock Holmes assistant. Alas, Ben faints at the site of blood and had trouble solving his way out of his house at times. His therapist suggested bowling, since there was no blood and the pins were straight ahead. No need to solve where the pins were. Cassie Jacobson always wanted to be a dance instructor. Thus, she attended the Arthur Murray dance studio in Twin Peaks. Unfortunately she accidently stepped on her teacher s foot causing him to break his leg in three pieces and having his leg in a cast for six months. Her therapist suggested bowling as a means to work on her foot work coordination. George Weller always wanted to be a pro golfer. After years of playing golf, George never became a pro golfer, because he developed a notorious hook. His therapist suggested taking up bowling in order to reduce that hook. Now George s hook only goes from one side of the alley to the other instead of from one side of the fairway to the other. Next is Ron Voss. Ron always wanted to be a ballet star, but could never find a tutu that would fit him. This so frustrated Ron that he would lose his focus and often drop the ballerina that he was dancing with. His therapist suggested bowling as a means to concentrate and regain his focus. Unfortunately, this doesn t seem to be working. Bob Strom always wanted to be a demolition expert. Bob became frustrated when no one would recognize his demolition talent. So he took it upon himself to blow up the Kingdom. Of course there was a cover up to hide the fact that Bob blew it up. However, he was banned from ever blowing up anything again. His therapist suggested bowling, so he could watch the pins explode. Finally, there is John Sweeney, who always wanted to be a sumo table dancer. Unfortunately after gaining 400 pounds, John could not find a table that would support him. His therapist suggested that he could dance after every strike on the bowling alley. We have seen very little dancing. After bowling Carolyn and Greg joined us for dinner at the bowling alley, where we all discussed our issues. ~John Sweeney Retirement How many days in a week? 1 Saturday, 6 Sundays Golf News and Sequim Event About Our Members Happy Birthday to these members: Larry Bash - 04/09 Sharon Berry - 04/04 Shirley Danielson - 05/15 Virginia DeVos - 04/19 Penny Freedman - 05/04 Cheryl Howlett - 04/20 Cassie Jacobson - 04/19 Lynn Johnson - 04/19 Florence Solt - 04/19 Robert Strom - 04/01 Jack Toker - 05/05 Patricia Walsh - 04/08 George Weller - 04/03 Carol Whelan - 05/14 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Stuart Boyd - 04/30/2014 Nancy Carmen - 04/30/2014 Kathy Gable - 04/30/2014 Susan Mayon - 04/30/2014 Florence Solt - 04/30/2014 Robert Strom - 04/30/2014 John Sweeney - 04/30/2014 Marcy Tufarolo - 04/30/2014 Welcome newest members: Carole Leslie - Joined 02/13/2014 Guy Richards - Joined 03/18/2014 These members recently renewed: Larry Bash Bruce Benard Shirley Danielson Sorell Fischer Andrea Hudson Steve Mills Janet Swanson Vera Taylor Jack Toker These members did not renew their dues: (date shown is date membership expired) Ann Hinken - 02/28/2014 Our chapter currently has 68 members.
