1 CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Philadelphia Chapter - American Singles Golf Association April 2014 From the Prez Jenn Ott, our next President, is writing the article for this month. It s Almost Over!!!! It has been a long cold winter, the longest and coldest in recent years. But, it finally almost over and it s time to dust off the clubs. The schedule is filling in nicely, thank you to all those who have volunteered to coordinate an outing. We are once again looking forward to having an outing on Masters Weekend at Westover. It will be a special outing to enjoy, and get in to watch the Masters. Hope to see you all there!!! And for those of you, who aren t adventurous to brave the early season conditions, please feel free to join us for dinner and some fun! Tee-Off Meeting Meet-up Season tee-off On March 12th we had our first of the season meet-up at the Black Powder Tavern in Wayne to kick off the 2014 golf season. After such a harsh and long winter, a lot of golfers came out for the night. The turnout was terrific with lots of familiar faces from previous seasons along with quite a few new faces. A few of the new faces signed up to become members of ASGA! It will be so fun to see folks on the links with longtime members and new ones. Next meet-up is April 9th at 6 pm at Black Powder Tavern. St. Patrick s Day Pub Crawl We celebrated St. Paddy s Day with our 3 rd annual Pub Crawl on Saturday, March 15th, riding the rails and resting on the bar rails along the way. We truly had the luck of the Irish when it came to the weather. After this Winter, Spring jackets were a welcome surprise. Fourteen of us took part in at least some part of the day. Lyn, Rich and Liz were there for our send-off at McGillicuddy s. Liz stuck around for Kelly s as well. Our core group (Ed, Gene, Tom, Shell, Troy, Jen, Terry, Paul, and Jim) stayed on course with the Grog and McShea s. The Grog gave us the second floor bar all to ourselves. Did they know we would get rowdy? Our last eastbound stop was the fan favorite, McShea s. It s such a cozy bar with a great neighborhood vibe, and Jim s boss found us there once again. We lost Paul! He was a trooper for coming along while still recovering, so we weren t really surprised when he said he was heading home after McShea s. Then he pulled an Irish good bye (an Englishman, no less) and left on an earlier train. We doubled back and searched all over. Luckily, Jimmy tracked him down in time for us to catch our train. We settled in at Ardmore where Maria caught up with us. We had such a great spot that we decided McCloskey s would be our final stop. Fortunately, the bartender had the perfect recipe for Irish Car Bombs. Delish! It was the perfect ending to a truly Irish day. Golf Handicap Hello fellow handicappers and potential ones! I know I am inundating you with technical "stuff" but for those who are curious here is some handicap information. A Handicap Index (HI) compares a players scoring ability of a "Scratch Golfer" to one of us. The HI is calculated from the 10 Best Handicap differentials of the last 20 rounds posted. The HI is calculated for you by GHIN, all we, Handicappers need to do is post our Equitable Score, simple. In order for us to compete equitably, Deb vs Liz, they need to know their course handicap. Every course has a set of tees, which have a different degree of difficulty. Most every scorecard lists the course rating and slope for every set of tees, and these define the difficulty. The higher the number the more difficult the course is. It is simple to determine your course handicap (CH) all you need is the slope for the tees you want to play (find on scorecard). Here are the 3 common ways to determine your CH. *1. Log onto GHIN, click onto Handicap Lookup, Enter your GHIN #, click look up, find C.H. Calculator (under your Index) click tab, enter slope, your CH is displayed. *2. Click on GAP APP on your smart phone, click on calculator, enter Slope, Fore! Your CH is displayed. *3. The old fashioned way, pure math. (Handicap Index x's Slope divided by 113 = CH. Once Deb and Liz determine their CH the "match" may begin and will be equitable! 4 ASGA WESTERN REUNION May 30-June 1, 2014 Every year we have a May golf outing and National has one back east over Memorial Weekend. They annually call theirs The Reunion. So this year we have tabbed ours The Western Reunion. We have also picked a location that most of the members of western chapters of ASGA can get to easily. It s Carson City, home of The Devine Nine, located 30 minutes south of the Reno-Tahoe Airport in Nevada s Capital City. We have scheduled golf on Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st allowing those to travel home late on the 1st or take Monday off and travel then. Golf is scheduled for Dayton Valley on Saturday and Sunridge on Sunday, both beautiful layouts. We have a two night, two golf day package with a dinner on Saturday night plus breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday. The standard package includes lodging, golf, two breakfasts and Saturday dinner. We have both single and double occupancy available. We will be staying at the Gold Dust Resort Hotel and Casino. The rates are as follow: Standard package: Junior Suite: Dble Occ. $250/person, Single Occ. $340/person (double queens or king available) If you want to get in early and play golf, we have a bonus round available at Silver Oak, for an additional $50.
