1 CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Asheville Chapter - American Singles Golf Association July 2008 Message from the President How about that TIGER! Watching golf matches on TV usually puts me to sleep, but the 2008 U.S. Open couldn t have been more exciting. About fifteen Asheville ASGA members began watching it Saturday evening while John Hill cooked hamburgers for us at his beautiful country/ city home in Hendersonville. That day s golf outing at Crooked Creek was pleasant with only one brief shower, which didn t stop play. Some members were still glued to the TV when I left. After I arrived home, I watched Tiger sink that 30 foot putt on the 18 th to take the lead. I looked forward to Sunday s play all the next day and couldn t believe Tiger pulled it off again on the last hole. I missed the Monday play-off, but hope to catch a replay on the Golf Channel. I think I m becoming a real golf fan. If only I could monkey see, monkey do. ~Judy Clouse CROOKED CREEK A HUGE SUCCESS Once again, we were blessed with perfect weather for our monthly outing. The format was a Shamble and here are the results: First Place, with a combined score of 143 went to Hank Parish, June Reece, Bill Dawson and Ruth Chewing. Second Place, with a combined score of 149 went to Cliff Orr, Milt Bullard, Kathy Miritello and Lynne Stafford. Thanks again to John Hill for hosting the after golf social. He was the perfect host and a good time was had by all. NINE AND DINE IS DOING FINE There has been a great turnout every Monday for Nine and Dine. At least 10 players each week. Come join in the fun and get in some extra practice. See you all at Highland Lake Golf Club. Don't forget July 4th golf and cookout at Highland Lake Golf Club. This has become a yearly tradition. So if you are planning to attend and can handle the cash flow, please get me your check ASAP. We are obligated to pay for a minimum number of sleeping rooms, so (except for our members who actually live in Lake Lure) all registrations will include sleeping accommodations. (See the event summary and registration form which are included with this newsletter). There is a special website for this event and you can view it at mountain fallweekend.com/. At the top you will see a few tabs, including a registration form, a list of those registered, and a summary of the optional Friday golf event. As you will see the theme of the event is You'll have the time of your life and that is exactly what we have in mind for all who attend. We still need volunteers to assist with some of the planning and on-site management. Please contact me or one of the names below to help out. Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins. And on top of that, the winner buys the drinks. Golf is harder than baseball. In golf, you have to play your foul balls. If you find you do not mind playing golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here's a valuable tip: your life is in trouble. Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot... rarely make a perfect shot. The term 'mulligan' is really a contraction of the phrase 'maul it again.' An interesting thing about golf is that no matter how badly you play; it is always possible to get worse. Golf's a hard game to figure. One day you'll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and, for no reason at all, you really stink. If your best shots are the practice swing and the 'gimme putt,' you might wish to reconsider this game. 3 You'll have the time of your life at Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure October 17th to the 19th, ASGA Mountain Fall Weekend at Lake Lure, NC - Rumbling Bald Resort, in the mountains of Western North Carolina. This will be the site of a spectacular weekend of golf and fun from October 17th to the 19th, The event will be hosted by the Asheville Chapter of ASGA. The theme: You ll Have the Time of Your Life is taken from the words of the Bill Medley/Jennifer Warren song of a similar name; the theme of the movie Dirty Dancing which was filmed on the site of this outing. Rumbling Bald is 1 hour from Asheville, 1 hour from Greenville/Spartanburg, and 2 hours from Charlotte. Click HERE for directions. This world class resort has a variety of facilities that will support this outing including a large restaurant (Lakeview) area with private rooms to accommodate a reception, breakfasts, and Saturday night dinner. In addition there are a couple of restaurants that can handle Friday dinners for those who are interested. All accommodations (Fairway Villas) have two bedrooms and two bathrooms and also have full kitchens and living areas so people can dine and party in the unit. Golf: The Apple Valley course is a Dan Maples creation, and is called one of the most beautiful mountain courses around by Golf Digest s places to play. Apple Valley s length provides a number of opportunities for spectacular drives. It's after the drive where golfers need to think clearly to score well. The Course Rating is 73.2 and the Slope Rating is 140. Bald Mountain's name come from the rock faced cliffs towering over the course. This course is a true challenge in a lovely setting and is popular for golfers of all abilities. The course has a rating of 70.9 and a slope of 128. 6 CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION JULY 2008 Tom Alsop woke-up on Wednesday, June 11th a new man, a little sore but with potentially another fifty years in him. The day before, he had successful quadruple bypass surgery. Yes, maybe too many hot dogs at the turn or maybe too many rides in the golf cart when he should have been walking. Literally two days before ASGA s largest event of the year at Pinehurst, Alsop found out he had to have bypass surgery. Knowing surgery was a couple of weeks off, I just wanted to focus on doing a good job and taking care of people s needs. Some players were asking why aren t you playing golf? and I gave them the same reason as I haven t played golf at the event in the past I enjoy taking pictures of each player out on the course. Although my doctor wanted to schedule it before Pinehurst, I pleaded with him to postpone it. I suppose because he s a golfer himself, he allowed me to finish the event. Resting easy at his home in Charlotte, Alsop reflects on the experience. It does make you think this is pretty serious stuff. I could miss my tee time for the rest of my life! We ve had a lot of members go through a lot of things in their lives. You get close to them and then every now and then, something tragic happens and we lose them. It s easy to get philosophical when faced with something this dramatic, Alsop continues. We all pray that we can enjoy life to its fullest and that we fulfill our given purpose. As we grow older, each of us realize we have fewer and fewer years on this planet. We want to push away Father Time with the longest club in our bag. And most of the time, we re successful. We re fortunate we live in the 21st century. Regardless, major surgery makes you reflect on the important things in life. Pinehurst Went Well - New Year s is Next National Event We had 310 people attend Memorial Day Weekend in Pinehurst at the reviews went well. For 2009, we re looking for locations. Criteria: should be mid-atlantic where at least 50% of the attendees can drive to the event, and keep us somewhat in one location. We d prefer a location with three golf courses coming out of the same clubhouse (due to members driving together). If you have suggestions for Memorial Day next year, please go to the CONTACT US button at SinglesGolf.com. We will announce our New Year s location by mid-to-late August. Details TBA August, Clarification Policy Announced Back in April, a new policy relative to membership terms was announced via the website in order to clarify a few things. It is our policy to post this in this newsletter as well: Membership, Equality, Marriage and Termination of Membership (established April, 2008) ASGA membership is open to any person, 21 years of age or older, who is unmarried (i.e. never married, divorced, legally separated or widowed) without regard to race, creed, gender or national origin. Any official event sponsored by the national organization or local chapters must be open to all members on an equal basis subject to space availability. Members who marry during the term of their dues period shall remain members until the end of their dues period. The national office has the right to decline or terminate any member's membership if the national office determines that such membership is not in the best interest of ASGA. In such cases, dues will be refunded on a prorata basis.
