1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Tampa Bay Chapter- American Singles Golf Association July 2011 Golf Committee Plantation Palms Outing June 21, ASGAers and one guest enjoyed a companionable hamburger and hotdog luncheon at Plantation Palms. The course was well prepared and the layout was in great shape. Then the heavens opened up and we got rained out before completing nine holes. Plantation Palms provided rain checks and we are looking forward to having the opportunity to play there again. Looking forward to seeing all of you at our next outing at Westchase on July 17. Isla Del Sol - Thanks, Gail By invitation of Gail Kutay twenty-eight ASGA golfers spent Saturday, June 4 golfing at Isla Del Sol followed by recalling our game over food and drinks at a nearby restaurant. Thank you so much Gail for arranging such a delightful day at one of the best courses in our area. When What Where Sunday, July 17 Play Own Ball, 12:00 p.m. Westchase Sunday, August 21 Scramble, 12 :30 p.m. River Strand July Outing: Our upcoming monthly outing is scheduled for Sunday, July 17 at Westchase Golf Club in Tampa. This outing will be tee-times, beginning at 12:00pm, followed by after-golf dinner at a nearby restaurant. You can enjoy one of the premium golf courses in the Tampa area for $41 (price includes green fees, tax, & ASGA prize money). Sign-up now for a day on the course with good friends and fun. Registration is available either online at or by mailing a completed registration form to the address on the form. Please remember to include your current address (in the memo field if registering online) or the field on the form for notification of the pairing and your tee time. For more information regarding Westchase Golf Club can be found at August Outing Scheduled: River Strand Golf & Country Club The 27-hole River Strand championship golf course was designed by worldrenowned architect Arthur Hills and gracefully skirts the tributaries and estuaries of the Manatee River. Located at 7155 Grand Estuary Trail, Bradenton, FL Phone: (941) , the golf course fits harmoniously with the environment. The Manatee River and its tidal water areas are incorporated into several holes making the course a remarkable and memorable experience. Golfers will find wide fairways and lush greens. It offers a challenge for the low handicap golfer and a fair, even fun, round for those who might find the fairways and undulating greens a bit of a test. The ASGA outing will be a scramble with a shotgun start on Sunday August 21 at 12:30 pm, cost is $ A team total gross score will be used to decide first and second place winners. The team must use at least two drives from each player. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before tee time and check in at the registration table. After-golf dinning has been arranged at Gecko s Grill & Pub at 4310 E. State Road 64, Bradenton, FL (Directions will be provided at check in). Be sure to bring your golf card with you as it will entitle you to a free drink at Gecko s. See you at River Strand! Lisa Johnstone won $53.00 and hopefully will become a new member. Handicap Coordinator The winners of the Most Improved handicap for the month of June were Cynthia Martell and Rob Brauns. Congratulations!! From the President We had the pleasure of having Vicki Goetze-Ackerman, LPGA Tour Professional & Golf Instructor as our special guest speaker at our June monthly meeting. She gave us an outstanding presentation captivating the audience not only with her love and knowledge of golf, but also with her fun and interesting anecdotes. Although none of our ASGA members will be hitting the pro circuit anytime soon, she gave us some great tips on how to improve our game and to have fun while doing so. Many thanks to Danny Leslie for arranging to have Vickie speak at our meeting. Before our speaker, we had a short meeting in which we talked about our most recent events which include Memorial Day weekend at Orange Lake Resort, golf outing at Isla Del Sol, and Kayaking at Ft. DeSoto Park. All three events were well attended and enjoyed by all. Upcoming events will be posted in this newsletter, on our website, and on MeetUp. Betsy Schwartz is in the process of organizing a Labor Day weekend outing at Mission Inn in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fl. (NW of Orlando) for us, so mark your calendars accordingly. 2 Rob Brauns reported on our Survey results. This is the survey (see results next page) that was sent to all members via e- mail. We had approximately 50 members reply and based on the results of question #10, "Should the monthly meeting be more of a mingle or formal meeting?", 76.3% wanted more of a mingle. Therefore, we will be changing our July meeting to a mingle-type format rather than a sit-down meeting. It will still be at Crabby Bill's but outside under the gazebo area. Board members will be available for any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you all there. On July 4, 1776, the United States claimed independence from Britain and Democracy was born! 3 SURVEY RESULTS: Recently the members were asked to participate in a short survey. The survey results are in. The overwhelming majority of you said: 1. We should plan more golf outings per month. 2. You are satisfied with the golf course locations. 3. You are satisfied with the price we are paying for golf. 4. You like playing for prizes. 5. You want more weekend getaways. 6. You would rather have a mingle type monthly meeting. 7. We have enough social activities. 8. You would like to eat at the course but not prepay. The board will use the survey results to determine the direction of the Tampa Bay Chapter. Highlights from Orange Lake Memorial Weekend For thirty two golfers, the official start of summer began Friday afternoon at Breezes Bar in Orange Lake Resort, Orlando. Members of three ASGA Florida chapters (Tampa Bay, Orlando, and West Palm Beach) were on hand for the fun. Later that evening chapter president Linda Floyd and villa mates Midge Orris and Donna Douglass hosted a red, white and blue welcome cocktail party. Saturday began with a Tropicana Breakfast. Cindy Simon, Betsy Schwartz, Deb Smith and Maralyn Gable set up their villa s breakfast bar to accommodate golfers arriving with breakfast casseroles, bagels, sweet roles, and champagne. Rob Brauns hustled to the Arnold Palmer designed Legends course to make sure golf games and golf carts were ready for play. The day s events concluded at The River Island Grill. After dinner, our group mingled at the outdoor bar to enjoy the music and the company of friends. On our final day, we left Orange Lake s spacious villas and headed to play through wetlands and woodlands on The Reserve Course. Golfers gathered once again at Breezes Bar for 19 th hole cocktails and goodbyes. We all agreed we should do this again. Manus, Diane, Rob and Julie SPECIAL EVENT OUTING LABOR DAY WEEKEND!! With a slightly better schedule this year, you can check in Saturday afternoon in the hospitality room and go to the pool or antiquing in nearby Mt. Dora. Our golf days will be Sunday and Monday, with tee times conducive to sleeping in 10 a.m.!! Checkout will be Monday, Labor Day, before we golf so that we can all head for home after our game.
