1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Tampa Bay Chapter- American Singles Golf Association December 2009 From the President As my term as President is quickly coming to an end I want to thank the entire board for all their time and energy. Without the efforts of these dedicated volunteers we would never be able to have enjoyed so many social and golf outings. I want to especially thank the Newsletter Coordinator (Diane Jennings), Secretary (Deb Smith), Website Coordinator (Heidi Gillespie), Facilities Coordinator (Donna Dunlap), and Hotline Coordinator (Anne Phillips) for their time. These are support functions that I sometimes forget to thank but are really keeping things going on monthly basis. For those of you who couldn t make it to the picnic at Ft. Desoto Park it was the best day. The weather was perfect. The park is truly a treasure in our backyard. We played games, biked, walked the beach and enjoyed a good barbeque lunch. There was a lot of talk of doing it again next year. Several of us went to the Tampa Downs practice range on November 7 for a putting lesson. We were introduced to a new putter that is also a training device. It took a little practice to get the hang of it but it was an interesting session. We were told that the Downs has purchased the same putting system that Tiger Woods uses to train. You can go there and get a lesson on this device that analyzes your putting stroke so you have evidence of why you miss putts. Then I believe the special putter is to help you become more accurate, basically by making your stroke more consistent. It is definitely what every golfer needs. Again the weather cooperated at Northdale on Nov. 22 nd. The course was in good shape and we had lovely day. The scenery at the Tilted Kilt restaurant was equally lovely after the round. I am looking forward to the Christmas party on Dec 5 at The Eagles. The White Elephant gift exchange is a big hit, so take this opportunity to get rid of or recycle an unwanted item from your closet. Wrap it up and bring it to the party. Also, please bring a gift for the Toys for Tots collection. Representatives from the Marine Corps will be with us to collect the toys. And, of course, the food will be great and all you dancers will get to dance the night away. I think we have had a successful year. The nature of our group is to have a constant turn-over which makes it a little difficult to keep continuity. We have additional challenges because we draw members from more than five area counties. Please get involved you will benefit and so will the association. I casually and unwittingly chose golf as my hobby when I was a youngster of 21 years. Upon reflection it has taught me many valuable lessons about living. TEN TOP REASONS WHY I GOLF It is a love affair with difficulty. It is the most social of all sports. It is impossible to hide your true self for an entire 18 holes. It is often a family affair. Losers get drinks. It can be the highest high and the lowest low-- all in one round. Social Committee News DECEMBER 5 TH (SAT.)...is almost here!!! Let's get in the holiday spirit at our annual end of the year CHRISTMAS PARTY celebration. Eat, dance, socialize, and exchange a "gift". Location: The Eagles Golf Club Nine Eagles Drive Odessa, FL Time: 7:00 pm 'til... Cost: Members: $15.00; Non-members $20.00 For those in the spirit of giving, please bring an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots collection sponsored by our United States Marine Corps Reserves. Dick Howard is making arrangements for some of our handsome Marines to join the party and collect our gifts. And we'll have our annual White Elephant gift exchange again. Wrap up that unwanted or un-used item to re-gift to someone else at the party. Give a gift; receive a gift. Don't you love a surprise? We hope to see you all there! JANUARY 23, 2010 (Sat.) Let's go to the races! Greyhound dog racing, that is. Location: Derby Lane Club Restaurant Gandy Blvd. N. St. Petersburg, FL Just follow the signs to the Derby Club. Time: Sat. Matinee at 11:30 am For the price of only $15.00 you get a reserved section in the clubhouse overlooking the track to share with your ASGA friends, including an all-you-can-eat buffet brunch and luncheon with items such as made to order omelets and hot entrees. Tax & gratuity is included. Beverage is extra. Entry and a program are also included. Parking is free. This space is limited to a minimum of 20 and maximum of 48 people. Reservations have to be paid for by Jan. 13 th to hold this area. Please send your money to Edie as soon as possible. Derby Lane is the oldest greyhound track in the country. The owners, Weaver lumber company, opened its doors in It has been owned and operated by the Weaver family ever since. Come join the fun and bet on your favorite dog. FEBRUARY 7TH (Sun.)...is SUPER BOWL Sunday. Mark your calendar accordingly. This event is in the planning stage. A total of 44 golfers enjoyed the fantastic weather that day on very well laid out course. The Chapter Championship will be held at Heritage Harbor G.C., Lutz, FL on December 12 th at 12 noon. All are welcome to play. However, you must have a handicap to qualify for the Championship. In October, chapters should have elected their chapter president for the 2010 calendar year beginning January 1. At the November meetings, chapters are suppose to elect their committee heads. All of this is according to your chapter bylaws ( If you have not elected your leaders for next year, please make sure you do it by the end of November. As soon as you have completed your elections, please inform the national office by submitting the new names to: A Time to Give a Little Thanks Thank you s are something we should and probably do hand out daily. At this time of the year, we do look back and can be very thankful for all of the folks who ve made this year a success. But special thankyou s go out to our chapter presidents. These are the folks on the front line who accept as volunteers the burden of anything headed their way. When someone else doesn t do their job, it s the chapter president who fills in. So take a little time this year to thank your president and other chapter leaders who ve made a difference.
