After eating crabs and other goodies, many of the members sat on the deck enjoying a drink and listening to the live music. A Happy Hour at the Pikesville Hilton, Pikesville, MD has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 17 th at 6:00 p.m. Also, on Tuesday, September 30 th, a Happy Hour has been scheduled at The Still on York, Rd. at 6:00 p.m. Dinner is always optional at the Happy Hours. Officers Needed Our board members continue to do a fantastic job scheduling outings, organizing social events, leading monthly meetings, and many more behind-the-scenes duties; all of which help to make our organization a success. We thank John Lins for his dedication and hard work during the past two years as President of our chapter. Since John s reign will soon come to an end, we need to elect a new president in October. Being President or assuming any of the other offices is a wonderful way to really get to know the members of our group, as well as play a major role in planning the events. John is more than willing to coach any interested person as he/she enters the position. Please give the possibility of being President serious consideration and notify John Lins or any other Board Member of your interest.
3 We are currently doing some creative planning for the position of Golf Chair and Assistant Golf Chair so that all the responsibility for the planning and implementing of each golf outing will not fall on just two members, but will be shared. If you are interested in contributing a little of your time planning a golf outing, please notify Terry Carr,, or one of the other Board Members. Golf Quotes Golf is 20 percent mechanics and technique. The other 80 percent is philosophy, humor, tragedy, romance, melodrama, companionship, camaraderie, cussedness and conversation. ~Grantland Rice Golf tells you much about character. Play a round of golf with someone and you know them more intimately than you might from years of dinner parties. ~Harvey Penick ABOUT OUR MEMBERS Happy Birthday to these members: Marcia Brooks - 09/27 Bob Connor - 10/06 David Cuthie - 10/01 Sheldon Hyman - 10/06 John Lins - 09/18 Debbie Marchinetti - 10/07 William Stojak - 10/09 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Nancy McKeown - 09/30/2008 Welcome newest members: Marcia Brooks - Joined 07/10/2008 Kevin McCleary - Joined 07/30/2008 Robert Phillips - Joined 08/06/2008 These members recently renewed: Connie Shapiro William Stojak These members did not renew their dues: (date shown is date membership expired) Mark Cole - 07/31/2008 Ronald Ettinger - 07/31/2008 Glen Lisella - 07/31/2008 David Meyers - 08/31/2008 Cheryl Riisager - 08/31/2008 Our chapter currently has 48 members. Rules and More Rules Larry was participating in a singles match play. He was sharing the golf cart with his competitor and he was driving. They both hit their drives into the rough. In their search, the cart moved the ball of both players. In addition to the requirement to replace the ball in the original position before movement, what is the correct ruling? A. There is no penalty regardless of who was driving because the ball was moved during search. B. Both Larry and his opponent receive a one stroke for moving the ball. C. Larry was driving the cart, he losses the hole. D. Larry was driving the cart. He is awarded a one stroke penalty. The rider in the cart gets no penalty. And the answer is: D. Larry was driving the cart. He is awarded a one stroke penalty. The rider in the cart gets no penalty. The cart is considered the equipment of the driver of the cart, if the cart is being driven. In this case, Larry was driving the cart, it was his equipment that moved both his ball and his opponent's. Rule 18 pertains to Ball at rest moved. If a golfer, his caddie, or his equipment moves his ball at rest except as permitted under certain conditions (i.e. on the green) a penalty of one stroke is awarded and the ball must be replaced to its position before movement. This is the rule that applies to Larry If an opponent, or opponent s caddie or opponent s equipment moves your ball while he is searching for it, and your ball is moved during the search, neither you nor your opponent is penalized for the movement of your ball, but the ball must be replaced to its position before movement. This is why Larry s opponent was not penalized and why Larry was not penalized for moving his opponent's ball. Note: Had Larry moved his opponent s ball other than during a search for the ball, Larry would have been awarded a one stroke penalty for moving an opponent s ball. In this case, the opponent s ball was moved during a search for the ball and no penalty is awarded. Next time, don t be so quick to drive the golf cart. Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!
