1 CELEBRATING 16YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA North Jersey Chapter - American Singles Golf Association September 2008 President s Message Dear Members, Although we still have many days of good golf before us, winter is just around the corner. Our members have expressed a desire to remain active with the chapter after the golf season ends, and to meet this goal we encourage you to consider organizing a social event. The chapter will only be as active as we have members that volunteer to host and run events. Sandy Fink recently organized a wonderful event, Tango on the Hudson. I am sure many of you have interests that we would love to experience also. Let's all do our share, partner with a friend and commit to organize a social outing and give our members the opportunity to engage in an active chapter year round. While talking about Commitment, sit back and reflect on your time as a member of the North Jersey Chapter. If your memories are fond, if you have met some really special people and cultivated friendships that might not otherwise have happened, and generally enjoy golfing with the NJ Chapter, consider adding your name to the slate of Officers for Members interested in giving back to your Chapter please contact any current officer to add your name to the ballot. The slate will be presented at the October meeting and the vote will take place at the November brunch meeting. Let s all do our part to reach out to fellow single golfers and encourage them to attend our meetings, mingles, and outings. Remember, our policy has changed and guests may attend only one meeting and one outing as a non member and then must COMMIT scary but true! I have said this before - ASGA membership dues $70, meeting and outing cost savings for members $5, the opportunity to golf with the North Jersey Chapter members - priceless. ~Linda Madernini, President Social Events Sorry that most of you missed our Tango On The Hudson concert on the 20th. Linda, Lillian, Judi, Gus and myself really enjoyed a terrific evening. The musicians were EXCELLENTE' and the dancers-wonderful. Adding to this was the picturesque setting overlooking the Hudson. The NYC city skyline looked absolutely gorgeous, especially as it glowed in the clearest night-sky. We ended the evening at Houlihan's for good conversation and a good meal. I am looking into theater schedules in both NY & NJ. I will keep you posted as to the next event. Please check your e- mail. Meantime, enjoy this glorious weather out on the greens. Our September Single Mingle will be at our usual 6:00 p.m. time on Thursday, September 25th at: McCormick and Schmick s Riverside Mall Paramus, NJ ~Ann Browne/Grace Zucaro Social Co-Chairs Golf On Saturday morning July 26, 2008, members of the club traveled to New York State to a well-maintained, very beautiful golf course called Apple Greens. The weather was perfect and the golfers were treated to some challenging golf starting on the new East Course. The front nine provided beautiful scenery with elevated tee boxes, and some very different hazards including carefully placed rock walls. The group finished on the front nine of the old course where the fairways are lined with apple trees. I'm sure some of our members had visions of coming back in the fall when the apples are ripe for picking. Bert Hermann and Marc Levinson won longest drive prizes. Donna Boylan took honors for closest-to-the pin. A delicious seafood dinner was enjoyed by all at a local restaurant called Gadaleto's. Thanks go to Bert Hermann for organizing the fun and successful outing. The month of August brought a group of 23 golfers back to the Water Gap Country Club for another year for an overnight outing. Saturday proved to be a glorious but long day as we waited patiently to tee-off. Once on the course though, we were challenged by the undulating, sloped fairways and lighten- ing fast greens. Prizes for Saturday s round were as follows: Long drive, men: Joe De Pergola (guest), long drive, women: Peggy Crane (guest), closest to the pin, women: Lisa Kinziger (yet another guest!) and closest to the pin, men: Frank Hopler. Joe s drive settled in front on the green on #7, 320 yards off the tee. We hope our guests come back as members to win yet more prizes! Once back at the clubhouse, some enjoyed a cool beverage at the outdoor bar overlooking the course; while others went to their rooms to get ready for an evening of dining and entertainment. Dinner was superb and OH THOSE CRABCAKES WERE GREAT! Frank Hopler's persistance in getting them on the menu proved to be a delight of quite a few golfers! After dinner, we were treated to some outstanding entertainment. Ron Richardson, the legendary voice of the Drifters and the Coasters, offered songs of the rock and roll era throughout the evening to the enjoyment of all in attendance. The golf shoes came off and the dancing shoes were on!!!!!! Some of our members even showed previously unknown dancing prowess to these nostalgic songs. We have the photos to prove that some members DANCED and STROLLED to complete a wonderday at the WGCC. On Sunday, after a morning breakfast, 16 players ventured out and got in 9 holes before lightning forced the closing of the course. Most of us ate an early lunch while a few brave souls ventured out after the storm passed. Prizes went to Joe De Pergola (another 300 yard plus shot) and Corinne Cullison for longest drives, and Dave Gray took closest to the pin. Thanks Frank for another enjoyable outing at the Water Gap! Sat. Aug. 16th we stayed in NJ for an outing in Parsippany at the Knoll East Golf Club. The weather was spectacular and NJ-ASGAer's and some guests enjoyed a round of golf at a local course. Marc Levinson (who arranged the outing) presented prizes to Gary Koop and Corinne Cullison for longest drive honors for men and women, respectively. Tony Perino and Elizabeth Mark took home prizes for their accuracy shots on the closest-to-the-pin hole. Congrats to

3 those 4 members for theirs skills. Most golfers headed to Poor Henry's in Boonton for food and drinks to complete a very nice day. Thanks to Marc for his time and efforts in arranging an enjoyable outing in NJ. As the season winds down, there are still openings for the Sept. 13th outing at Winding Hills GC being arranged by Debbie Jordan. Get your checks to her ASAP! Two outings have been added to the schedule. They are the Meadows GC in Lincoln Park for twilight golf on Oct. 4th. Ben Ellison is arranging that one and a phone call or will make your reservation for you. Ann Browne has arranged an outing in Vermont for Oct , Details are on the website, as well as the schedule in the newsletter. Once again, thanks to all the members who have stepped up this year and helped make the golf outing schedule a very successful one. ~Bert Hermann/Lisa Rademacher, Golf Co- Chairs Membership I find it very hard to believe that the golf season is winding down to maybe a few months left. I hope the weather holds out and we have a good Indian summer for the next couple of months to play golf. Whoever went to the Delaware Water Gap outing, I hope you all had a great time. The weather was great except for a few thunder showers on Sunday which cleared most of us out early. I want to thank Frank Hopler for his photography skills as always he does a great job. I hope to get them printed and in our ASGA photo album that I have. If anyone has taken any pictures in the past year and would like for them to be put in the photo album please contact me. If any of you know a friend, co-worker or anyone who is interested in playing golf feel free to bring them to a social or meeting. I am trying to building the membership to a new record high and with all the members cooperation we can accomplish this. If you need flyers to post, let me know. Just as a reminder to check your membership renewal date I would not like to see any one of you not be able to join us in playing golf. Larry hit the ball out of bounds. And the rules discussion began. What is the penalty for hitting a ball out of bounds. A. One stroke penalty, drop ball inbounds at nearest point of relief, not closer to the hole. B. One stroke penalty plus distance. Replay ball from previous hitting position. C. Two stroke penalty, drop ball inbounds at nearest point of relief, not closer to the hole. D. Two stroke penalty plus distance. Replay ball from previous hitting position. AND THE ANSWER IS... The answer is B. Rule 27-1b Ball Out of Bounds applies. When a ball is hit out of bounds, the player incurs a one stroke penalty and must re-play the ball from as near as possible to the spot from which the original ball was last played. Failure to comply results in Loss of hole in Match Play and a two stroke penalty in Stroke Play.
