1 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Wilmington, NC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association September 2008 Message From Your Chapter President We re pleased to have Joan Port (Teaching Professional) and Gary Port (Teaching Pro) of Lori s Golf Shoppe in Calabash at our September 11 th meeting. While this is NOT a sales presentation, they ll talk with us about how to choose equipment and the psychology of golf. How many of us have bought new clubs, balls, tees, etc. to improve our game and forgotten to focus on a positive mental attitude? Please join me in welcoming Joan and Gary for this informative, interactive and fun presentation. At our October 9 th meeting, we ll elect officers for Your nominating committee: Tony Zitney, Ann Howell, Pat Steger, Gerrie Storch or I should be contacted if you d like to serve. Our three elected officers are President, Treasurer and Secretary. Committee chairs are appointed by the president. Consider volunteering it s a great way to get to know each other and enjoy golf. Our Members Party is planned for October 3 rd at Watermark Marina from 6:00- pm. It s open to anyone who might be interested in learning more about our local ASGA group so feel free to invite your friends. Diane Degennaro and I need volunteers to help plan the fun stuff for our Christmas Party December 5 th at Wilson s. Santa may pop in to treat all of you who have been good girls and boys. You have time to make the list! Take the initiative in car pooling once you know the pairings. You can contact any of the group by using the membership roster in this newsletter. Most of us have ; however, all of us do not. Thanks to our members who have assumed responsibility for keeping non e- mail members connected. Each member is encouraged to invite guests and increase membership. Any member who has recruited a minimum of 5 new members will have their annual dues paid. Remember to check with our web site for current events. ~Eloise Eller, President Social Committee News To those of you not in attendance, The 50/50 winner...$14.00 was ReAnn Scott. 2 Wilmington Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association President Eloise Eller Chairman of the Board Tony Zitney Golf Chairpersons Bill Duncan and Sandy Ettinger Social Chairperson ReAnn Scott Membership Chairperson Lucy Prell Communications Chairperson Gerry Storch Secretary Diane Fastnacht Treasurer Pat Steger Beach. Where you dine will be a jointdecision made by all those playing golf that day not a pre-determined choice made by the social committee. The front desk at Beau Rivage has a list of every restaurant within a 15-minute radius of the club, with phone numbers, and they will be glad to share to assist in your choice. ~Diane Degennaro, Social Chair Golf News Our Lockwood Folly outing on July 27 th looked like it might be threatened by stormy weather, but the skies cleared and we started without a hitch. Unfortunately, cart path only conditions called for a switch in format to Captain s Choice. We ended up with 8 teams, with first place wins by the team of Bud Streeter, Eloise Eller and Bert Lemery. The 2 nd place team included Diane Degennaro, Brian Huff, David Beauchamp and Larry Salava, while 3 rd went to Mike Saunders, Ann Howell, Jim Conley and Sandy Ettinger. Closest to the Pin for women was Faye Curren and for men, Bill Duncan. Congrats to all. Carolina Sands on August 9 th also turned out to be a beautiful day! We had a start with 6 teams playing a Team Net format. Due to a couple of No Shows, we had to do a little last minute shuffling of teams, but I think a good time was had by all. (Remember folks, if you don t call or to cancel, there is a $10 No Show fine.) Two teams tied for first, but the winning team on a card-off was Tom Wylie, Eloise Eller, Jim Conley and Bud Streeter. (Note: I can see that I need to separate Eloise and Bud in the future with 2 first place wins in a row!!) Losing the card-off to get 2 nd place was Faye Curren, Buck Rogers, Sandy Ettinger and Joe Johnson. Third place, using a blind draw went to Elaine Conklin, Pete Peterson and George Weinfurter. The Closest to the Pin awards were won by Bert Lemery and Sandy Ettinger. Outings in September include Castle Bay on Saturday, September 13 th at a cost of $36. This will be a Modified Captain s Choice with a start at. The last September event will be at the St. James Members Club on Sunday, September 28 th, with s starting at 9:16 A.M. The format will be 2 Best Balls; the cost $38. Just a reminder, on the closest to the pin holes, the ball must be on the green to qualify to compete. A ball closer to the hole, but off the green does not beat a ball further away from the hole that is on the green. Just want to make sure there is no confusion on this point. Sign up for local events by ing Sandy at aol.com ( ) or Bill at wearldunc3@yahoo.com. You may also Sandy if you need driving directions to any of the courses. Of course, the easiest way to sign up for future events is at our monthly meetings. Let s all try to support our club by attending the next meeting on September 11th. ~Bill Duncan & Sandy Ettinger, Golf Chairpersons Communications Committee News Summer is on the wane and new opportunities abound to work on your golf and meet new friends. Check the Star News for your area, State Port Pilot, Jacksonville Daily News, Brunswick Beacon, Island Gazette, Lumina News, Pender Chronicle, Topsail Voice, Whiteville News Reporter for ASGA news in the Community sections. The Communications Committee wishes to thank all who send information and update their records. Please check yours and let me know if there are any changes. Send any changes to gstorch@ec.rr.com or ~Gerrie Storch and Susan Hammond Ziegler, Communications Co-Chairs

Wilmington Chapter Policy: New guests may attend one meeting and one golf outing (normally the first outing following the meeting date). Afterwards, the guest may not participate in any further outings until they join and dues are paid in full. Rules and More Rules Q. Larry hit the ball out of bounds. And the rules discussion began. What is the penalty for hitting a ball out of bounds. A. One stroke penalty, drop ball inbounds at nearest point of relief, not closer to the hole. B. One stroke penalty plus distance. Replay ball from previous hitting position. C. Two stroke penalty, drop ball inbounds at nearest point of relief, not closer to the hole. D. Two stroke penalty plus distance. Replay ball from previous hitting position. AND THE ANSWER IS... The answer is B. Rule 27-1b Ball Out of Bounds applies. When a ball is hit out of bounds, the player incurs a one stroke penalty and must re-play the ball from as near as possible to the spot from which the original ball was last played. Failure to comply results in Loss of hole in Match Play and a two stroke penalty in Stroke Play. Don t Let Your Membership Lapse... Be sure to renew so you won t miss receiving a newsletter.
