1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Wilmington, NC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association March 2011 Message from the Chapter President We had our monthly meeting for February and thanks to all that attended. John Stenerson spoke about our next meeting which will be at Magnolia Greens. It will be a Nine and Dine starting about 3:00 or 3:30 pm with a buffet at 6:00 pm followed by our regular monthly meeting. The cost will be $20 for the golf and $15 for the food and soft drinks. This will be on a trial basis and we are looking forward to a great turnout. We will have a discussion during the meeting to see how you feel about having the Nine and Dine followed by the monthly meeting. We can return to our regular meeting at Hieronymus, if the members wish to do so. We need to confirm the numbers and we need to know how many will be playing golf, how many for the buffet and how many will just be coming to the meeting, This is important so please respond and don t wait until the last minute to start calling. Thanks to the cooperation of the weather, we finally had our first golf outing on Sunday, February 20, at The Lakes. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a great time. Beach Blast registrations are coming in from other Chapters and our Wilmington members. Don t miss this exciting weekend, support your local chapter and send your registration to Diane Degennaro today. You will enjoy a welcome party on Friday night at the Marriott, golf on Saturday at Masonboro Country Club, dinner at the Carolina Beach Marriott on Saturday night, golf at Beau Rivage on Sunday and prize money for both days. Also, on Friday there is optional golf at Beau Rivage. Take care and we will see all of you at our next meeting on March 10 at Magnolia Greens. ~John Travis, President Beach Blast Update ~Ann Howell and Diane DeGennaro The Beach Blast is fast approaching. We have folks attending from Albany, NY, Charlotte, NC, DC, Hickory, Myrtle Beach, Philly, Pinehurst, Savannah, Shenandoah in Virginia and, of course, Wilmington. If you haven't registered for this outing, get your registration form to Diane DeGennaro as quickly as possible. We still have openings and have extended the deadline to March 10 th. Spring is just around the corner and we'll have a blast!! Beach Blast We Need Your Help ~Sharon Goell The Beach Blast committee needs your help soliciting door prizes. If there is a store that you frequent and know someone in management or if you have a friend or family with a company that might donate something, please let either Ann Howell or Sharon Goell know. You can ask the company or Ann or Sharon will, but please help! Golf News The season has begun! The weather cooperated and 23 members enjoyed a beautiful sunny day at The Lakes. Everyone played their own ball, plus there was the old favorite, Yellow Ball. Amazingly, all six teams brought the yellow ball home. Afterwards, the guest may not participate in any further outings until they join and dues are paid in full. team of John Travis, Terry Hincken, Ann Howell and M J Smith. Closest to the pin for women was won by Jan Van Der Vliet; for the men it was John Macris. Our last outing in February was Porters Neck on Saturday, February 26. Winners of closest to the pin was Sue Williamson for the women and Bud Streeter for the men. We will have two outings in March. First will be Castle Bay on Sunday, March 13 ($35). Artie Scott, head professional at Castle Bay will be putting on a FREE chipping clinic for us. If you ve played at Castle Bay you know that they have an excellent area for this and who amongst us couldn t use a little help on making that up and down? The clinic will start at 9:30 and then we ll have an 11:00 shotgun start. The second outing in March will be on Sunday the 27 th at Oak Island; it will be a 9:00 shotgun start. The weather should be getting pretty warm by then so we can enjoy the island breezes. Watch your for the signup notice. If you do NOT have , please let me know so that I can get in touch with you before each outing. Regarding cancellations for the Lakes, please call or John Stenerson 3 to 4 days in advance if you think that you will not be able to attend the event for any reason. Please remember to let Gerrie Storch know if you will be eating with our group after the event. At each event, we will be collecting $1 from each player and guest for the bag attendant. WILMINGTON CHAPTER ASGA - POLICY FOR GOLF EVENTS Format for golf events will be determined by the golf chairman and posted on signup sheets. 2. Members should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to tee off. Late arrivals will have to catch up with their group 3. Members should contact golf chair(s) at least 48 hours before a registered event if unable to play; emergencies notwithstanding. 4. Any member who is a no-show for a registered event will be assessed ten ($10) before being allowed to participate in another event. 5. In the spirit of camaraderie, good sportsmanship and generally getting to know each other better, pairings will be random. 6. In the spirit of camaraderie, good sportsmanship and consideration of your fellow members there will be a no smoking policy on the golf carts. ~Sharon Goell, Golf Chair Membership Committee News Please welcome our two new members, Barbara Anderson, a transfer from Raleigh, and Carol Cullum, a referral from Ann Howell. Two members, Lucy Prell and Angel Landry renewed their membership. If you know of any prospective members, please give me their names and we ll give them a great sales pitch and recruit them. We have 19 people signed up for dinner at Antonio s after Porter s Neck golf on the 26 th. Thanks to all for participating in our get togethers. 3 The Funadmental Laws of Golf Thanks to Gerrie Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either use one more club or two more balls. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot. It's not a gimme if you're still away. You can hit a two acre fairway 10% of the time and a two inch branch 90% of the time. When you look up, causing an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again. It's easier to get up at 6:00 AM to play golf than at 10:00 AM to mow the grass. A good drive on the 18th hole has stopped many a golfer from giving up the game. It takes longer to learn to be a good golfer than it does to become a brain surgeon. On the other hand, you don't get to ride around on a cart, drink beer, eat hot dogs when you are performing Brain Surgery!!!! 5 WILMINGTON S 2011 BEACH BLAST APRIL 1 3, 2011 The Wilmington Chapter of ASGA is pleased to host the 2011 "Beach Blast. For many years we sponsored the "Winter Chill", most recently just outside Pinehurst. We thought we would make a venue change back to Wilmington and move the date to a warmer time of the year - we thus present to you "The Beach Blast" to be held April 1-3, 2011 Our host hotel is the beautiful oceanfront Courtyard Marriott in Carolina Beach. The Marriott is located in central Carolina Beach and is within walking distance of restaurants and shops. Our Friday night registration party, breakfasts, and Saturday night dinner/dance will be at the Marriott. If you plan to arrive early and stay late, contact information is provided on the registration form. The weekend consists of two rounds of golf - Saturday at the Masonboro Country Club. and Sunday at Beau Rivage. Optional golf on Friday will also be played at Beau Rivage. Included in the registration cost is Saturday and Sunday golf, continental breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday, Friday night registration party and the dinner/dance on Saturday night. This exciting weekend will also include many door prizes on Saturday night, along with generous prize money for Saturday and Sunday play, and a 50/50 raffle.
