1 CELEBRATING 14 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Wilmington, NC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association February 2007 Message From The President Fore!! It appears that 2007 is getting off to a great start: a good turn out at the first meeting of the year, new members, and great member involvement in signing up for the first golf outing! As you will see in the Golf Chair articles we may have had a first for our chapter in January; a waiting list that far exceeding any prior January outing that I can remember. Let s keep it up!!! As I mentioned before, you will be seeing several changes this year. Wilmington Chapter members will not pay any prize money at the chapter golf outings this year! The prize money will come from the chapter treasury; however, we will continue to collect a $1 chapter fee at the golf outings. We are also going to try something new with the golf outing $10 deposit. Effective with the February outing we will stop collecting the $10 deposit. This deposit was created years ago due to the increasing number of no-shows. The $10 reimbursement for no-shows still applies. I am confident that our members will do the right thing and cancel with proper notification instead of just not showing up. This action is only for 2007, but if we see the start up of no-shows again, the deposit will be reinstated. For anyone not at the monthly meeting, Ron provided an overview of the Club Championship being instituted this year. Look for the championship details/ guidelines in the March newsletter or a mass ing in the near future. Remember, YOU are the chapter, get involved!!! Volunteer to assist one of the committee chairs AND sign up early for golf!!! ~Tony Social Committee News A good time was had by all at Magnolia Greens on the 14 th and Romanelli s is a great find out there. Happy Valentines Day to everyone, grab your Love Puff and well, you know what to do Previously mentioned, we are going to try some new events. The SUPER BOWL PARTY on the 4 th, kicks off the month with a Football Pool. Meet up at WOW - it s on the right, next to Mayfaire Cinema, great menu, ribs, large screen TV's and all. Kick off around 6:00.plan to arrive between 4:30 and 5:00, we will have tables reserved!!! Golf on the 11 th at North Shore, tee time/11:00. we will eat at the clubhouse afterwards The big event for the Month! THE WIN- TER CHILL - the 16 th, 17 th & 18 th of the month. Golf, Dinner & Dancing it doesn t get any better than that! We wrap up the month with Happy Hour at ROSSI S, at LANDFALL CENTER 7:30, on the 23 rd, see you there. ~Dianne Thistle, Social Chairperson Golf News Our first outing of the new year was held at Magnolia Greens on January 14, 2007 and a great day it was for our Chapter! The weather could not have been better. Temperatures in the seventies in January are a rare occurrence and we delighted in the day. We had 40 members play at this outing and had 12 on the waiting list. That's 52 members! With all tee times booked, we were sorry we could not accommodate everyone. That's one of the pitfalls of signing up late. Members need to get their names on the list early so that we can provide tee times for all who wish to play. If you sign up early, more tee times can be assigned to our group. The winning teams were: First Place, Upcoming Event: Western Caribbean Cruise Departs Ft Lauderdale, March 4th - Returns March 11th See website for details National Website: National ASGANational@aol.com Office Hous: 8:00-5:00 Monday - Friday National Hotline: GOLFMATE ( ) To Join or renew, visit website and join online, or call our hotline. 2 Wilmington Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association, Inc. President Tony Zitney (910) Co-Golf Chairperson Carolyn Comentale (910) Co-Golf Chairperson Mike Petruzzi (910) Social Chairperson Dianne Thistle GREEN DI (910) Communications Chairperson Susan Hammond Ziegler (910) Rick West, Doc Shuey, Susan Hammond Ziegler and Jan VanDerVliet... Second Place team, Bill Duncan, George Weinfurter, ReAnn Scott and Joanne Korsey. Third Place team, Bert Lemery, Vince Spolarich, Susan Wood and Amy Boardman. Way to go, members! Our next golf event is at North Shore. Please don't wait until the meeting or the last minute to sign up for this event as we have tee times, so get your name in the pot early. We want to have a good showing, golfers are expected by the course...and by the golf Co-Chairs. It's a great course and I know you will enjoy playing there. Dinner will be at the restaurant at North Shore. A word about playing golf when it's not Daylight Savings time; starting at 11:00am, we will have plenty of time to finish if we play ready golf. Five and a half hours is too long to play a round of golf. With a foursome waiting behind you, it is not the time to be talking on cell phones, lollygagging around the greens and recording scores. We have to be considerate of everyone else who might like to finish the round before the sun goes down. It's that "do unto others" rule that gets lost somewhere along the line. So, let's pick up the pace and have a good time while doing it. ~Mike Petruzzi / Carolyn Comentale, Golf Co- Chairpersons Chapter Member Handicap Service Our chapter has a program that will compute your handicap for golf. We need to make an honest effort to maintain our handicap and keep it updated. When our golf outings allow the scores to be entered, the Golf Chairperson will provide the scores of the players. This is dependent on the format; you must play your own ball to enter your score. If you play a round of golf other than a chapter outing, please provide your individual score. The chapter is making every effort to provide this service to our members and we need the help of everyone. We know that this process will take time to develop, but with the help of all members we will have a real and current handicap in place for every member within a few months. This handicap can then be used in our chapter outings and for your personal play. When a round of golf is played other than our chapter outings, please submit your score, the date played, and the name of the golf course to Ron Carey. You can save your score cards and submit them at the monthly meeting or the information to Ron at oldsrgaf@ bellsouth.net. Please submit these scores in groups of five or more. If scores are sent by be sure to include your name, the name of the golf course, the date played, Membership Chairperson Pam Shaffer pshaffer@cfcc.edu (910) Newsletter Editor Susan Hammond Ziegler shzgolfer@aol.com (910) Chairman of the Board Carolyn Comentale carbur@ec.rr.com (910) Secretary Ann Howell nantucketgal@charter.net (910) Treasurer Eloise Eller ellelafleur@aol.com (910) Sign-up North Shore Feburary AM - $33 Sign-up CONTACT: Mike Petruzzi Home Cell mpetruzzi@ec.rr.com Or at the Feb 8 th monthly meeting (remember-the Jan golf outing SOLD OUT before the meeting) If you have an address change, phone number change, change, etc notify National at or MEMBERSHIP DUES Dues for the Wilmington chapter of ASGA are $70.00 per year. We urge you to start saving your scorecards and take advantage of this free service. Chapter members who are established members of local golf courses can provide their updated handicaps quarterly. Membership Committee News New Members Hello to Bonnie Dugan, John Davis, and Robert Stoffel, our three newest members. Thank you for joining us! Membership We had one guest attend our January meeting. Thanks to all of you who renewed your membership. Let me take a minute on behalf of the 2007 Membership Committee to first, thank the 2006 Membership Committee for a great job. We are going to really try to fill your shoes! Secondly, we want to ask our members to continue giving such a warm welcome to all of our potential/new members. Our organization has a wonderful reputation for friendliness. We all remember attending our first event. You're a little nervous, especially if you don't know anyone. At my first event I was amazed at how people kept coming up to me and introducing themselves. It made me feel great, and that s what a new person wants. It s a win/win, you feel good and so does the new person. Lastly, in case you missed the January meeting, we threw out a challenge to all members. We announced that the member who brings in the most new members by Nov. 1 will receive a year s paid dues. (In case of tie, one name will be drawn) Who will be the winner? ~Pam Shaffer, Membership Chairperson ABOUT OUR MEMBERS Happy Birthday to these members: Glenda Dennis - 02/09 Bonnie Dugan - 03/05 Barbara Ervin - 03/11 Chuck Fleming - 02/12 Carole Foy - 02/22 Ellen Mood - 03/01 Barbara Parton - 03/02 Buck Rogers Jr. - 02/17 Charles Rooks - 02/24 Carol Spires - 02/02 Robert Stoffell, Jr - 03/03 Fran Young - 03/03 John Zeko - 02/13 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Joan Kuebler - 02/28/2007 Pat Leader - 02/28/2007 Clifford Orr Jr. - 02/28/2007 Billie Piner - 02/28/2007 Lucy Prell - 02/28/2007 William Vinson - 02/28/2007 Millie Williams - 02/28/2007 Welcome newest members: John Davis - Joined 12/19/2006 Bonnie Dugan - Joined 12/06/2006 Robert Stoffell, Jr - Joined 01/09/2007 These members recently renewed: Ronald Carey Charles Carr Sandra Ettinger Mary Lockfaw Susan Ziegler These members did not renew their dues: (date shown is date membership expired) Angel Macias - 12/31/2006 James Parton - 12/31/2006 Johnnie Simpson - 12/31/2006 Our chapter currently has 118 members Wilmington Chapter Policy: New guests may attend one meeting and one golf outing (normally the first outing following the meeting date).
