1 CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA North Jersey Chapter - American Singles Golf Association November 2011 President s Message Well, this will be almost my last message to you as President of the chapter. I am beginning this column in this way because as of the date I am writing this, nobody has stepped up to be nominated for this office. I cannot emphasize enough how rewarding this job has been! I have had the opportunity to get to know so many more of our members over the last two years, while working with a wonderful Board of committee chairs and cochairs. I know one (or two) of you would gain so much from the experience of leading this group of wonderful and friendly people! Yes, two the Presidency can be shared, and it would make the job a little less demanding. The election will take place at the November brunch meeting, so there is still time to throw your hat in the ring. Our holiday season is beginning, so make sure you check out the Social committee s column. Ruth Elk and Grace Zucaro have been making some terrific arrangements, so make sure you keep your calendars open for November 20 and December 3. In addition to celebrating, our chapter also encourages the spirit of giving. In November, bring canned goods to the brunch since we will be making a trip to the local food banks. If you forget to raid your pantry, you can always write a check and it will be gratefully accepted for the purchase of much needed food items. In December, bring an unwrapped toy to the holiday party. I will be bringing those toys to the Audrey Hepburn House at Hackensack Hospital for children who are staying there during the holiday season. Please consider the fact that as we all are affected by this suffering economy, so too are the charitable organizations that continue to do their great work. Everyone should be able to spare a little extra something at this time of the year. As I mention the poor economy, I must remind you all that the ASGA dues will be increasing as of January The new yearly dues will be $ This does not seem like a great deal of an increase, but I am sure that for some of you, it may be so. Consider renewing before the end of 2011, as the national headquarters has indicated that you may do this at the current price level of $ Have a wonderful Thanksgiving if I do not see you at the brunch. I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the winter months as we continue to socialize with non-golfing activities. ~Flo Weiner, President Social The holiday season is finally upon us, and needless to say, the end of our social season. There will be no single mingle in November and December due to the holidays. ~Ruth Elk/Grace Zucaro Social Co-Chairs Social Events Several enjoyed a busy non-golf weekend. Our October outing took 8 members and 4 guests to the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side where we took a walking tour learning about how it was at the turn of the last century. It s amazing how much the area has changed- NO More bargains! It was interesting how many of our grandparents experienced aspects of the life described. After completing a walk of the neighborhood we took tours of the museum, which is a real tenement building. I think spending time in the various tenements gave us all a new perspective on how difficult life was in the early 1900 s for new immigrants. This experience gave us a new appreciation of what we have and what they worked for. After some time shopping in the Museum Store, we walked a few blocks to Fatta Cuckoo for a delicious lunch. A little plug for Fatta Cuckoo: A cute little restaurant with very good affordable food owned by the niece of Janice s Bistro in Ho Ho-Kus and a friend of Susan, Flo s daughter. After our late lunch /early dinner several of us got back on the subway to return to our suburban lives and ended a fun filled city day. The next day four of us were off to the Papermill Playhouse to see the play Newsies a Disney production heading for the Great White Way- While we enjoyed the play we liked our dinner better at Basilio s in Millburn, an excellent choice. Our next outing will be to: Doin Dishes in Montclair, a paint your own ceramics studio. This event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 29th from 6-9 p.m. The cost for ladies is $7 for fun, wine and cheese & crackers plus the cost of the dish you wish to paint. Of course our male members are welcome as well. If interested Geri at geri.powder@ gmail.com ASAP as we need to make reservations. ~Sandy Fink/Geri Powder, Social Events Co- Chairs Golf Hi Members, I am happy to report that the postponed Skyview outing took place on September 25 th. 13 golfers participated with 1 st and 2 nd prizes for the scramble teams. The weather was gorgeous and fortunately this golf course does not have a flooding problem. Thank you Linda Davidson for making the arrangements. On October 1 st 16 golfers enjoyed a day up at Winding Hills. Leon Saddler and Joe Cifune garnered prizes for closest to the pin on the front. The gals who won on the back were Elizabeth Mark and Lesley Rothfeld. Geri Powder was the organizer and again she did an excellent job. The last official golf event was held on Sunday, October 9 th at Patriot Hills. In summer-like weather, 7 players ventured out on this

3 extremely hilly course. Everyone chuckled over the unusual ratio with 4 guys and 3 gals playing at this challenging venue. Rob Jensen won closest to the pin and Elizabeth Mark won for the ladies. The unbelievably warm day ended with a delicious seafood dinner at Gilligan s. Debbi Wolf set up the golf at Patriot Hills. It s possible that some of you will still be playing in November. Of course, the days get much shorter as the weather gets colder. Please get in touch with us and let us know about your autumn golf adventures. Will you find your ball under the leaves? Do 3-4 layers of clothing restrict your swing? Did you remember the golf gloves to warm both your hands? Good luck and enjoy!! Bev and I would like to thank all of you for planning and running the outings for the 2011 season. It takes participation from the group in order to have a successful golf season! We had many great outings this year - thanks to you that helped make it a great season. ~Beverly Boyle/Debbi Wolf, Golf Co-Chairs Membership Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow When we look back at our year we are so pleased to see that not only have our numbers grown but our new members are active and involved in our chapter. Today we begin to say good-bye to our role as co-chairs of the membership committee. We thank everyone for all their help in growing our chapter; through bringing in new friends, distributing cards and flyers, welcoming prospective members, chatting at the bar, and extending personal invites. Looking ahead we hope that this level of growth will continue through the efforts of the committee and the collective assistance of our membership. Remember that we all have a responsibility in keeping our chapter growing and active. Let us grow together and enrich our chapter with the friendships we share. A reminder about nametags New members have remarked how helpful it is when members wear nametags at the meetings. It helps people mingle and get to know each other with ease and comfort. Rules and More Rules Size limitation when a rock is no longer a loose impediment Our foursome was playing golf in the North Georgia Mountains. Larry's drive on #4 landed 20 yards to the right of the fairway about a foot behind what I would describe as a very small boulder and Larry characterized as a large rock. This rock was resting on the ground in a direct line to the green. With some considerable effort Larry was able to push the rock out of the way of his intended swing. Scott protested Larry's action. Larry said he was within his rights, the rock was a loose impediment, as witnessed by his ability to move it. Scott said that Larry violated the intent of the loose impediment ruling by moving an object that clearly required considerable effort to move. Scott said Larry had improved his lie illegally and should incur a two stoke penalty. What is the correct ruling. A. Larry did nothing wrong. Stones of any size that can be moved are loose impediments. B. Scott was correct. The stone required more than a moderate amount of effort to move and therefore was not a loose impediment. Larry incurs a two stroke penalty And the answer is... The correct answer: A. Larry was correct, stones of any size (not solidly embedded) are lose impediments and may be moved.

ASGA members will again be treated with two choices as to where to go for New Year s this year. These options will no doubt satisfy all of your dreams and desires to celebrate 2012 in grand fashion. West Coast New Years: Our Palm Springs chapter will host New Year s at the Hyatt Grand Champions and will treat you to some great golf at Indian Wells on our traditional celebration dates of December 29- January 1. West Coast: Hyatt Grand Champions East Coast New Years: The ASGA National Office will host New Year s a tad late. With 80% of those polled responding favorably, the decision was made to head to Florida a few days after the new year begins in order to save on airline costs East Coast: Ritz-Carlton / Sarasota and airport hassles during the holidays. The East Coast / Sarasota event will be at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota. We ll play golf at the Ritz-Carlton Member s Club. Each foursome on this golf day will have its own caddie. Then we ll play Legacy, one of the area s top-rated courses. We ve got a phenomenal rate at the Ritz-Carlton. Deluxe rooms have a rack rate of $379 per day this time of the year, but the ASGA rate will only be $149. The event begins Wednesday, January 4 and normal group departure will be Saturday, January 7, however, there will be optional rounds for those who wish to come early or stay late. Book Your Airline Ticket Now! The further out you book, the better your rate, generally speaking. Have you been on one and simply not put on the weight you d like to put on? Now s the time. Now s your chance to become a world traveler. No matter what you eat, you ll lose it playing some great golf at two fantastic layouts: St. Kitts Golf Course and the Greg Norman-designed Temenos. But best of yet, we ll cruise on the beautiful Celebrity Eclipse ship parting out of Miami, FL. Sue Eliasberg of our DC chapter, who works with Cruise Web, is your contact. She ll answer any questions you have, but first, we ask that you check out the flyer on the website. A mass e- mail went out on September 25 announcing the event in full detail with a request to get your registration and deposit for this event in by September 30. Beyond that date, we will continue to accept registrations although there could be some slight variations of the package based on changes the cruise line may make. So for all the deets, go to Ireland Summer of 2012 We ve been closely watching the Dollar / Euro exchange rate and there is current trend favoring the dollar. So the trip is still on and details should be viewable at by late November (yes, I know we said October last month!). About 200 members have shown interest in this event. 201 of our members visited Scotland in August, Denver Chapter Looks to Host Colorado Event Recently, we surveyed our membership to determine if there was sufficient interest in our Denver ASGA chapter hosting an event in Colorado in Here s the result of the survey, as reported by Connie Stevens, event chair: Your information to our questions has been very helpful as our committee plans the event for We are moving forward on getting the best prices and value for your trip to Colorado next year, and we will be sure to keep you updated on our progress based on your choices and responses. CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA From the President It s November, the weather is cooler, and the re-seeding is done for the most part. Now is a great time to be golfing with ASGA. Carol
