1 CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Triad Chapter - American Singles Golf Association February 2013 A Message from the President We kicked off the New Year with two meetings of the Board to discuss our plans to help the Triad Chapter grow its membership, get more members involved in outings and home play and make the club even more enjoyable for everyone. Our new golf chairperson, Dave Jacobson, is open to hear your ideas about playing on Sundays, playing earlier in the day( especially during the heat of summer) and improving social golf rules so play is quicker. He says to call him at Since Dave is hosting our first social event of the year, the Super Bowl Sunday party on February 3 rd, you may want to call him to let him know if you re coming to that and to give him your input on golf outings. Kathy Giba, our new social chairperson, is going to send out a survey to members about their interests in extra-curricular activities baseball games, bowling, concerts, plays, etc. We are hoping to have a cook-out at Maple Leaf after a home round. Such a great idea! Kathy, too, is open to getting phone calls about your interests. Her number is Cindy Green and Tish Stidham, our new membership and communication chairpersons respectively, have some great ideas about marketing our club to the community. We are so fortunate to have them utilize their talents to grow our membership and let the Triad know we re here. As an aside, I looked for a club like this for three years before a friend told me about it! Finally, we continue to be lucky to have the voices of wisdom from our long-time members on the board: Steve Motsinger, Kevin Crestman and Karen Vaughn. I m looking forward to this season and welcome your thoughts for me, too. My phone number is ~Jeanne Peters, President Schedule for February and March 2013 We will be playing at our home course, Mapleleaf Golf Course each Saturday until the first weekend of April. Our standing tee -time is 11:00 except for the 2 nd Saturday of the month then it is 1:00 p.m. Please call the course (336) to inform the office that you are playing with the ASGA singles group. Cost is $ This is a great course to play and they are happy to have us. Feel free to contact Dave Jacobson at (336) if you require further information. Where we will gather for the post round meal will be announced prior to play that day. It is usually in a golfer friendly restaurant in Kernersville. ~David Jacobson, Golf Chair New Year s Golf trip December 28 th January members and 1 guest traveled to Myrtle beach, SC for our New Year s outing at the Legends Golf Resort. We had the opportunity to play its 3 distinct courses: Heathland, Mooreland and Parkland. The accommodations were great. We stayed in fully furnished 2 bedroom/2bath condominiums. With breakfast and lunch served buffet and restaurant style at the club house each day. Although we experienced unusually cool and wet weather, everyone had a great time. The 1 st day we played the Heathland course. It was rainy and cool but 10 of us braved the weather. Our high scores did not reflect the great time we had on the course. The 2nd day we play the Mooreland course. The weather was overcast, cool and breezy. Even though the course was still wet, it played well and was quite challenging. 2 more adventurous players fielded the course. Although the scores were high, they did not reflect our enjoyment of the round. Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) ASGA in Hawaii. March 16-23, Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. Seven Days in Heaven. See attached Flyer. Orlando's Sunshine Fling - March 8-10, 2013 at Mission Inn Resort and Club, Howie-In-The-Hills, FL. 2 Triad Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association TM President Jeanne Peters Chairman of the Board Steve Motsinger Golf Chairperson David Jacobson Social Chairperson Kathy Giba Membership Chairperson Cindy Green Communications Chairperson Patricia Stidham Treasurer Kevin Chrestman Handicap Chairperson Karen Vaughn Landon Woods, Steve Motsinger and Frank Dorn, talleying the score for the last round in 2012! The final round of 2012 was played on the 3rd day on the Parkland course. The weather finally cooperated and we enjoyed a sunny round of golf. What a great way to end 2012! The round will be remembered for years to come. Each game was completed by the group gathering at the club house for lunch and libations boasting about our adventures during the round. We enjoyed 2 great meals in town. The second night we had a wonderful meal at The Sea Merchant. This was recommended by member, Kathy Giba and resoundingly seconded by several other members. Fresh Sea food and fellowship was enjoyed by all. The group ended the year by having a delicious and elegant meal at Rossi Italian restaurant. It was nice to see everyone in their dinner wear. The ladies of the group hosted a movie and game night in their condo. Not all the members attended but will make sure they do next year! This was a great way of ending 2012 and welcoming Several members have already expressed an interest in bringing in 2014 in the same manner. ~Robin Pinnix Super Bowl Party Our 1st social event for 2013 was a Super Bowl Party at David Jacobson's house. It was a huge success! Nine of our member came and everyone had a great time. The menu consisted of wings, meatballs, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, various dips, brownies, and fresh pineapple. Thank you David for your warm hospitality and for hosting this event. The next social event will be a St. Patrick s dinner. We can either have it on Saturday March 16 th or on St. Patrick s Day March 17 th. I am open to suggestions. Please let me know your thoughts as far as the day and any Restaurant you would prefer. Lastly, anyone who wants to host a social event is more than welcome. Let me know and I will be glad to help and make it happen. I have listed the events which our members would be interested in the survey section of this newsletter. Your Social Chair, ~Kathy Giba Our host Dave Jacobson Some of the gang enjoying the game/party
3 Survey As you know Kathy Giba is our new social chairperson. In an effort to make participation in social events more appealing she would like to know how you feel about the following: 1. What types of Social Events would you participate in if the club offered them? 2. Would you attend the Monthly Meeting if: It was at a different location. It was on another day or different time. Not Interested Other 3. What would you change about our Singles Golf group if you could? 4. Would you be willing to play some Sundays instead of all Saturdays? 5. Would you like to see earlier tee times in the Summer? Please fill out and return to Kathy Giba 5841 Cardinal Way, Greensboro NC She will be collecting these until March 15 th. Survey Results I want to thank all of you who took the time to fill out the 5 Question survey. I really appreciate it. I received 13 responses back with a lot of good feedback. A special thanks to Louis Marusik for so many great suggestions. I have summarized the answers below along with comments: 1. Social Events - Barbeques, movies, concerts, art exhibits, horseback riding, dinners, grasshopper ballgames, bowling, stock car races, pool parties, festivals, wine tastings, get together at someone's house, dancing, Halloween party, live music downtown. Once again, anyone wanting to host one of the events above, please let me know. 2. Monthly Meeting - 3 of the top answers were - change the location, make it a later time as it is hard for some people who work to make it that early, change to meeting to be after play on Saturday at Maple Leaf. 3. Change in no particular order - More non-golf activities, more members, updated website, photo's in newsletter on social events, speed up play, re-name the chapter to Triad North Carolina since the National people ask were the Triad is, announce rules prior to play, acknowledge birthdays, get rid of the click, better turnouts at outings, include the alumni in more outings, play captains choice or have competitive team play, flyers advertising the amenities/features of the courses where we are having an event and lastly mix up play between players. 4. Sunday Play - All 13 members said that they would play on Sunday. 5. Earlier Tee Times - 12 members said yes, they would like earlier tee times in the summer and 1 said no. As all of you already know, our organization is only as successful as what we as members put into it. If you have never sponsored an event in the past, please consider putting together at least 1 this year. I hope that you find the above information useful as far as hosting an event. I will work with the board as far as the monthly meeting and newsletter. REMEMBER - You can't expect different results if you just keep doing the same thing over and over again. Respectfully, Your Social Chair, ~Kathy Giba

GOLF ETIQUETTE 101 The Spirit Of The Game Unlike many sports, golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players and to abide by the Rules. All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be. This is the spirit of the game of golf. Safety Players should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by the club, the ball or any stones, pebbles, twigs or the like when they make a stroke or practice swing. Players should not play until the players in front are out of range. Players should always alert greenstaff nearby or ahead when they are about to make a stroke that might endanger them. If a player plays a ball in a direction where there is a danger of hitting someone, he should immediately shout a warning. The traditional word of warning in such a situation is "fore." Consideration For Other Players No Disturbance or Distraction Players should always show consideration for other players on the course and should not disturb their play by moving, talking or making any unnecessary noise. Players should ensure that any electronic device taken onto the course does not distract other players. On the teeing ground, a player should not tee his ball until it is his turn to play. Players should not stand close to or directly behind the ball, or directly behind the hole, when a player is about to play. On the Putting Green On the putting green, players should not stand on another player's line of putt or when he is making a stroke, cast a shadow over his line of putt. Players should remain on or close to the putting green until all other players in the group have holed out. Scoring In stroke play, a player who is acting as a marker should, if necessary, on the way to the next tee, check the score with the player concerned and record it. Pace Of Play Play at Good Pace and Keep Up Players should play at a good pace. The Committee may establish pace of play guidelines that all players should follow. It is a group's responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group. Be Ready to Play Players should be ready to play as soon as it is their turn to play. When playing on or near the putting green, they should leave their bags or carts in such a position as will enable quick movement off the green and towards the next tee. When the play of a hole has been completed, players should immediately leave the putting green. Lost Ball If a player believes his ball may be lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds, to save time, he should play a provisional ball. Players searching for a ball should signal the players in the group behind them to play through as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. They should not search for five minutes before doing so. Having allowed the group behind to play through, they should not continue play until that group has passed 2013 Golf Schedule Date Course Time Call Contact/Course Fee Players Deadline 2-Feb Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 11:00 Call Course TBA Feb 9-Feb Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 1:00 Call Course TBA Feb 16-Feb Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 11:00 Call Course TBA Feb 23-Feb Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 11:00 Call Course TBA Feb 3-Mar Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 11:00 Call Course TBA Mar 9-Mar Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 1:00 Call Course TBA Mar 16-Mar Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 11:00 Call Course TBA Mar 23-Mar Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 11:00 Call Course TBA Mar 30-Mar Maple Leaf (Informal Play) 11:00 Call Course TBA Mar
5 and is out of range. Priority On The Course Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, priority on the course is determined by a group's pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. Care Of The Course Bunkers Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others. If a rake is within reasonable proximity of the bunker, the rake should be used for this purpose. Repair of Divots, Ball-Marks and Damage by Shoes Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not made by the player himself). On completion of the hole by all players in the group, damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired. Preventing Unnecessary Damage Players should avoid causing damage to the course by removing divots when taking practice swings or by hitting the head of a club into the ground, whether in anger or for any other reason. Players should ensure that no damage is done to the putting green when putting down bags or the flagstick. In order to avoid damaging the hole, players and caddies should not stand too close to the hole and should take care during the handling of the flagstick and the removal of a ball from the hole. The head of a club should not be used to remove a ball from the hole. Players should not lean on their clubs when on the putting green, particularly when removing the ball from the hole. The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole before players leave the putting green. Local notices regulating the movement of golf carts should be strictly observed.
