1 CELEBRATING 12YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Triad Chapter - American Singles Golf Association March 2005 A Pitch Shot from the President by Steffany Drozdo I would like to welcome our new members, of which there have been several, to the Triad Chapter of the ASGA. I hope that you find both friendship and many opportunites to play golf as I have over the past two years. As my interim presidency nears the halfway point, I would like to encourage any member who is interested in taking the role of president to contact any members of the executive board. It truly is not an overwhelming task but serves a vital purpose. We look forward to our second-annual trip to the Legacy on behalf of Norma Hall and Kady Carruthers this month and will have the privilege of seeing the Village of Pinehurst in pristine condition as it prepares for this year's U.S. Open. Sherrian is a Wilmington ASGA member who may also be relocating to the area, so she wanted to check out our chapter. Steffany reminded everyone that someone will need to step up and serve as president after her marriage to Paul Gamsby later this year. There was no guest speaker but Steffany noted that we don't need to have speakers at every meeting, that we can just mingle, but that guest speakers are always welcome. Social Chair Carole Olson read some funny jokes from two books. From The Official Exceptions to the Rules of Golf, she read that if you "whiff" the ball, as long as you don't act like you whiff it, you should be able to consider it a practice swing. We agreed. Also, any absolutely new ball you pull out of the sleeve and put into play doesn't know the rules. So, if it should go into a water hazard or out of bounds, you should not count strokes against you since the ball didn't know the rules. We agreed again. She also read from Chicken Soup for the Golfer's Soul about the brand new golfer. Golf Director Randy Jarvis told us about some of the many courses he's trying to line up for the Spring outings, including Meadowlands, Pine Knolls, and Jamestown, along with the already announced Olde Homeplace, Holly Ridge, and Pinehurst. Starting in April we will have two outings per month in addition to the informal play at. Randy also reminded us that on the weekends of informal play at, be certain to verify the time we play when you sign up. Norma Hall announced that the weekend at Pinehurst at the Legacy April 9 & 10 was full. A St. Patrick's Day party is in the works. More information will be coming on that via . Del Louder ran the 50/50 raffle and Gary Price was the winner. Next meeting is back on the regular schedule of the 2nd Monday of the month, February Chapter Meeting Recap Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 by Carol Brooks We had a good turnout of 21 members and guests after a balmy February day. President Steffany Drozdo called the meeting to order. New members present were Carol Christine, Sandra Creech, Rex Galusha, Sherrian Robinson, and Mary Anne Utley. Guests were Steve Lineback and Marc Stokes. Steve is a former member from 4 or 5 years ago who is thinking about rejoining. Sandra is a charter member of the Raleigh ASGA chapter, but has moved to Clemmons. NEXT MINGLING - Monday, March 21st The Triad chapter meets on a regular basis on the SECOND MONDAY of each month. We will meet at OutWest Steakhouse, 1185 Highway 66 South in Kernersville, at 6:30 pm. Prospective members are welcome. Remember to call a friend today and invite him or her. Know someone who d like to join? Have them call and an information packet along with a current newsletter will be mailed to them.

Any time you play a course and want me to add your scores to your Triad ASGA handicap, give me the scores, slope, and rating and I'll take care of this. If more than one ASGA play together, then only one person should take responsibility for this. Valentine's Outing On Friday, Feb. 11, ten single golfers met at The Fox and Hound in Thruway Shopping Center, Winston-Salem, for fun, fellowship, food, and a little billiards. We had to move the tables twice as little by little all arrived. Joyce, Jim, Curtis, Carole, Judy, Kevin, Ray, Sherrian, Carol, and Randy enjoyed a good meal even if the smoke was thick from some nearby cigar smokers. After the meal a few jazz lovers went to the Speakeazy Jazz Club for drinks (Valentine's martinis) and some good progressive jazz by AirStream from Charlotte. From the Social Committee by Carole Olson A Saint Patrick's Party is in the works for March at new member Sandra Creech's place at in Tanglewood Farms in Clemmons (across from the entrance to Tanglewood). Information was not available for this newsletter so check your . We're always interested in exciting ideas for non-golf social events, places to go, things to see, parties, etc. The problem is finding things that a large number our members would be interested in. We don't want to plan an event that only a few people would be interested in attending, although we do encourage you to arrange small group get-togethers among yourselves. So, if anyone has any ideas, let me know and if you're interesting in serving on the Social Committee, also let me know. Triad ASGA on the Radio Ray Wallace and Carole Olson represented our club on Winston-Salem State University radio (WSNC FM 90.5) on Fri- day, Feb. 11, before the Fox & Hound outing. The NPR station was having a broadcast about being single in the Triad and asked if we could furnish representatives. Radio personality Victoria Waterman asked why Ray and Carole joined ASGA, if they had on-line dating experiences. Carole said that she joined to meet other active singles who didn't want to just sit in front of the TV. Ray said that he thinks the Triad is a great place to be single, but Carole didn't agree. Unfortunately, the two never got a chance to plug ASGA other than a quick mention of the Myrtle Beach trip over New Year's. They were only on for about 5 minutes but Victoria Waterman expressed interest in inviting them back in the future. Communications Committee Update by Carol Brooks If anyone has organized an ASGA outing that is not on our regular schedule, write it up and send it to me. We always encourage our members to get together outside of our scheduled outings. We want pictures! If you have a digital camera, take it to the course and shoot your partners! Be certain to follow golf etiquette and don't snap in a backswing and putt! the pix to me with a short explanation and I'll try to get them in the newsletter. Remember my alternate address to send club info. Sometimes North State does not allow to come in to my regular address at: cab1@northstate.net. So, if you get a message back saying that the message won't go thru, use cab1hp@yahoo.com. Please try the northstate.net address first. Watch every ball until it comes to rest, then mark the spot with a distinctive tree or nearby landmark. - Park your cart on the side of the green that's nearest the next tee. - Fix at least one pitch mark on each green. - Tend the flag, and do it right. Stand as far from the hole as you can and on the high side of the hole, above the break, so that balls roll away from you. Hold the flag so it doesn't flap. - Pickup after double par to speed up the game. Don't be ashamed. - Know when to play first. (To keep the pace of the game moving, ASGA plays "ready golf" - if you're ready, then play golf.) - Never offer anyone swing tips. If anyone asks, give the old Sam Snead line: "You've got just one problem - you stand too close to the ball after you've hit it." - If someone has just hit out of a bunker, but is still the farthest from the hole, offer to rake the bunker so they can go ahead and hit.
4 March Birthdays Frank Dorn - March 15 Nancy Bramlett - March 30 Tony Piparo -March 31 National ASGA Needs Volunteers by Tom Alsop, Founder, American Singles Golf Association Hello, Fellow ASGA Members: I know what you're thinking - - uh, oh, the word "volunteer" is in the headline so they must be asking me to do something. Well, yes, absolutely! You're a member of the American Singles Golf Association and you have a vested interest in seeing things work for not only your future enjoyment, but for everyone else's as well. We're setting up some NATIONAL COMMITTEES - six of them, in fact, and we'd like for you to direct your enthusiasm about ASGA in a very positive and helpful way. We have looked at our organization and determined there is a need for these committees: Website, Public Relations, Multi-Chapter Events, Member Benefits, Advisory, Awards & Recognition. A NATIONAL COMMITTEE works with the National Office to set-up guidelines and policies for how things should work within our organization. And if you work this year on a NATIONAL COMMITTEE, we'll REWARD you with some free trips, free golf, etc. All volunteer positions should not require more than 2-4 hours of work per month, depending on the degree you wish to become involved. Our Feb national newsletter outlines these volunteer positions in more detail (or contact Tom at GolfASGA@aol.com or website). Please get back with me if you are interested. Thanks for your participation in ASGA,the greatest singles organization on the planet! Address Change? Change? To help us communicate with you, let us know if you move or if you change your address or phone number. Just notify the new Membership Chair, Marilyn Skertich, of the changes. Golf Tip Get Real on Club Selection The next time you play, put your ego aside and take one extra club on every approach shot. Then chart your round, noting where each approach comes to rest. If you find you re leaving most of your irons short, change your strategy. Before hitting any approach shot, ask yourself which club on an average hit will fly the ball to the middle of the green. That s smarter than hoping for perfect contact. If you miss the shot slightly, it ends up on the front of the green, catch it superflush and it will probably still stay on the back. You ll also pay less for directional mistakes, because most greens are wid- est in the middle. With one more club, your pulled or pushed shots are more likely to carry front bunkers and catch a piece of the dance floor. The Topped Shot How to Prevent that Ugly Shot! Shift your weight to your front foot before impact. This will keep you from falling away from the target or back onto your heels the two main causes of topping the ball. To groove a good weight shift, practice hitting 5 irons with the ball teed up a half inch. Try to take a divot after impact without hitting the tee. With a sharply descending blow, you ll get your weight onto your front foot and make contact below the ball s equator. Golf Chuckle "The fundamental problem with golf is that every so often, no matter how lacking you may be in the essential virtues required of a steady player, the odds are that one day you will hit the ball straight, hard, and out of sight. This is the essential frustration of this excruciating sport. For when you've done it once, you make the fundamental error of asking yourself why you can't do this all the time. The answer to this question is simple: the first time was a fluke." April 2004 Newsletter Deadline March newsletter articles are due to Carol Brooks by March 20th.
