1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Triad Chapter - American Singles Golf Association October 2009 Chapter News OutWest Steakhouse Monthly Meeting, September There were seven in attendance; let s have a full house in October! The chapter amended the bylaws to indicate that the President may serve a second term. In addition, there is no limit on the number of years the Treasurer may serve. Alumni Outing will be held at Olde Homeplace on October 10 th. It will be hosted by Tom Loughlin and the cost will be $37.00 for golf and $12.00 for the meal. Call Tom to see if there are any vacancies left ( ). Need to know so food can be ordered! New Year's Outing: As you know in past years, we have sometimes struggled to get a minimum of 20 participants. Recently, we were approached by the Raleigh chapter to join us, but this apparently went nowhere. We have now been approached by Larry Hollifield, Hickory Chapter about joining our group. He feels that he can get some people to join us. Here is a point to consider. Larry is not a current member of the Hickory Chapter Board. However, he has been in the past and has been successful in getting 12 people to go to Myrtle Beach for New Year's before. He has given me the impression that he may transfer his membership to us due to some feelings about their choice of golf courses in the Hickory area. This is one of the reasons that he chose to play with us yesterday. We decided to open it to the Hickory Chapter. We also voted to play and stay at Village at The Glens at 2110 Hwy 17 S. North Myrtle Beach. Free replay at course after 1:30pm September s results The weather was perfect and the competition was keen. Sixteen golfers enjoyed Oak Hollow Golf Course and had a great meal at Liberty Grill afterwards. We all saw the ball bounce once and thought it went behind some trees. We had two new names to play with us. Welcome to Amy Farley, the newest member to our club. She is from Chapel Hill, but works in Haw's River just outside of Burlington. The other person was Larry Hollifield. Vertigo sets in when I change a ceiling light. I remember standing at the top of a ski slope 15 years ago and wondering how I'd get down. I can't even do down escalators. Why was I going up in a blimp? Because it was there. I applied to visit the MetLife blimp, Snoopy One, during the Wyndham Championship at the airport where it was moored and to talk to the pilot. When officials called to confirm the date, they asked if I wanted to go for a ride. Duh. Here are some facts I learned: The blimp flies from event to event. Snoopy One has flown all the way to California. Two weeks before the Wyndham, Snoopy One was at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The next stop is a pre-season football game in Atlanta. The blimps cover more golf events than anything, followed by NFL football. Top speed is 52 knots (about 60 mph) and the average is 30 knots (about 35 mph) Blimps could fly miles a day between events, or around 50 miles per day. It can fly at night. While at the Wyndham Championship, it was moored at little Causey Airport near Liberty. PTI airport is too crowded. There are two pilots who alternate in Snoopy One, Jeff Capek and Mandy Scott. They work for The Lightship Group, which leases the blimps to Met- Life. It takes two days to inflate with 69,000 cubic feet of helium and then has to be checked and certified. There is no framework inside the envelope. When deflated, it folds relatively flat. The envelope is replaced every two years or so. It is powered by two engines which use gasoline, just like in our cars. It can fly about 8-10 hours before refueling. From bottom of gondola to top of inflated balloon is about 46 feet. The gondola is very bare bones, with seemingly thin sheet metal walls. No restroom or other creature comforts. It will seat four, plus the pilot. The gondola is not air-conditioned but that's not needed since the windows are open and the air is cooler. You can stick your arm out of the window. The blimp takes off and lands just like an airplane, comes in for landing on the runway, touching down on only two wheels. A ground crew guides the blimp with ropes while on the ground. You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

3 hand signals to the pilot on lift-off and landing. The pilot uses rudder pedals to steer left or right and wheels on either side of the seat to control altitude. It may seem that the blimp is stationary over an event, but it is really moving at all times and the pilot is constantly correcting direction or altitude. The pilot is in communication with local airports (PTI) and is aware of upcoming storms like plagued the Wyndham. The blimp returns to its base in enough time to avoid the storm. A camera is mounted to the nose of the blimp, controlled with a joystick in the cockpit by the photographer. The ground crew can handle almost all repairs themselves. They carry an extra mast in case something happens to the main one. 5 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION OCTOBER 2009 We have three national events headed you way, November's Battle at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, SC, New Year's in Orlando and St. Andrews in August, Registration for the New Year's event has just opened (online), about 100 are registered for Myrtle Beach already and 195 are registered for our Scotland trip. It always helps planning events when we know how many are coming, so please register early if you can. The beauty of this is that you can arrive as many as three (3) days early and stay up to three (3) days late and it will only cost you $64 per person (based on dlb. occ.) to stay an additional night, or $128 to room by yourself. Scotland is Headed Toward Sellout As of late September, nearly 200 people have signed-up for our trip to Scotland, July 31-August 8, We originally set a limit of 128 players but we've secured additional rooms and courses to accommodate our needs. St. Andrews, Scot-land is no doubt the most special place on this planet for golfers. We'll stay at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel on the outskirts of St. Andrews and on the edge of the North Sea. We have room for about another people. At this point, you'll only need to put 10% down.
