1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Raleigh, NC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association September 2010 Message From the President Hello golfers: Board members of the Raleigh ASGA chapter met August 10, 2010 and there is concern about the number of people who are not renewing their membership with the ASGA. Yes, the economy is hurting everyone and $70.00 may be a hardship, but realistically it is only two rounds of golf somewhere. So, what is the problem that people are not renewing their membership. Is it that National and the Raleigh chapter do not offer a welcoming golf schedule and social activities, or is it that people just don t want to come out and play golf in a relaxed atmosphere and meet other single folks? I enjoy both the Raleigh chapter and the National outings and have made some great friends because of ASGA golfing events. I want to strongly encourage the people that are still on the membership roster, to seriously look at participating in the I-40 Challenge with the Wilmington Chapter, on September 25, at the Timberlake Golf course in Clinton. We are the host chapter this time and want to make this a fun filled day for both chapters. The golf chairs, myself, and the board would love to see more than the usual 8-12 people playing that we have been averaging lately. The next great offering for our Raleigh chapter will be the Annual Tournament to be held October 9. This is also a fantastic golf outing. Again, I want to really emphasize that this is your annual tournament and is always lots of fun. Lee Thayne and Mary Kershaw have done a tremendous job this year getting the golf courses for us to play, and also extra courses on the off weekends. There is always a core group of golfers, and we love to see others coming out and especially welcome new members looking at the chapter. Let us support the golf outings for the remainder of the year. Fall golf is coming when the weather should be absolutely perfect for the events scheduled. I take this opportunity to thank Pam Gobel (Social Chair) for her work during these past months as she is not renewing her membership at this time due to other commitments. I remind everyone that shortly we will be looking for nominations to the Board for the 2011 season. Mary Ann Gracely will be heading up a nominating committee for the October elections. We did not have good attendance for the regular chapter meeting on Aug. 17 at Foster s, and I hope more members will be able to gather with us on Tuesday, September 21 at 6:00 p.m., where the food is good. ~Margo Acomb, President Golf News August 14 brought us to Riverwood Golf and Athletic Club in Clayton the site of our Annual Tournament coming up in September. Ten members teed off and played the Deer Run and Riverview nines and had a great day. We played both Ladies and Men s Low Net. Betsy Durchuck won the Ladies Low Net and Rich Bradley won the Men s Low Net. Both winning $5.00 in hard cold cash! Bobby Jones and Lianne Thayne won the closest to the pin awards of a sleeve of Titleist golf balls. Eight members of the group retired to LaCocina Mexican Restaurant for some great food and liquid refreshment and to award the winners. On August 28 six members along with two alumni tackled Tot Hill Farm in Asheboro, NC. It was a particularly humid day and didn t lend itself well for us to burn up the course with our scoring abilities, although I heard several players say they wanted to come back. The fall is a beautiful time to play Tot Hill Farm. We were glad to see them and renew old acquaintances. There were no competitions in this event. The entire group then dined at the Carolina Brewery in Pittsboro. Big events coming up in September and October: September 11 Keith Hills Country Club 216 Country Club Dr., Buies Creek, NC Tee Times begin 11:00 AM Greens Fee - $35.00 Ph.(800) This golf course is home to the Campbell University Golf Team is always a popular course for us to play. Come out and join us. September 25 I-40 Challenge Timberlake, Clinton, NC This is an annual event for our chapter with the Wilmington Chapter. This is a new course that we have located midway between us. It s a great course! We need to field 20 players to oppose the 20 players that Wilmington will be bringing. We have a catered dinner afterwards with prizes and the infamous trophy awarded. Please return the registration form in this newsletter with your check ASAP so that we can plan accordingly for the dinner and carpooling. This is a really fun event and gives us a chance to meet other North Carolina folks in ASGA. The $45.00 fee covers the golf/ dinner/ prizes. That is hard to beat these days. Deadline: September 18, 2010 October 9 Annual Tournament - Riverwood Golf and Athletic Club - Clayton, NC Tee Times 11:00 Greens Fee/Prizes - $40.00 Dinner on us. What a deal!! This event is partially subsidized by our treasury so members come on out and enjoy it. Instead of a caterer at the course we will travel to LaCocina in Clayton and enjoy dinner compliments of our chapter. It will be a cash bar so plan accordingly. Look for the registration form in this newsletter and watch for the deadline. October 23 Crooked Creek - Fuquay Varina Time/Cost TBD This will make up for the earlier weather cancellation on our schedule at Crooked Creek. Details will follow. If anyone wants to play a course that we have not scheduled please let Mary or me know so that we can try to schedule it on an off weekend. 6 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION SEPTEMBER 2010 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, we ll return to the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up some great courses nearby (Meadowland Golf Course and Farmstead Golf Links) and have arranged for 10:30am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. In addition, there is optional day-of-arrival golf at Burning Ridge and dayof-departure golf at Arcadian Shores. Date: November Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf, enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and a Friday night cookout. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. A recent poll was made asking members to give us input for a location. Results: 52% wanted to support the folks in the Florida panhandle (i.e. Panama City with Gulf Shores / Sandestin suggested), 28 percent wanted Daytona and the the final 20% went to returning to Orlando. Other suggestions were south Florida (Naples area), Sarasota, New Orleans, and a few other southern cities. ASGA looks at a number of elements in putting together a New Year s event such as nearby airport, available courses, weather, hotel accommodations and proximity to where the attendees come from. If we can have it in a location where percent of the attendees can drive to the event, we ll have a much larger turnout than if it s a location where 90% of the attendees would have to fly. Stay tuned! Denver ASGA Up and Running Congratulations to Dawn Lindsay and all the volunteers who ve helped put Denver ASGA on the map. The new chapter hit 45 new members in no time flat. Denver s a great golfing area, plus you have the extra benefit of your ball flying an additional 100 yards! Thank you, Dawn, for your efforts. We hope ASGA has a positive impact on many lives in the Denver area.
