1 CELEBRATING 21 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Triad Chapter - American Singles Golf Association April 2013 Message from the President The Board met on to explore ways to make tournaments more user friendly, increase our membership and create more social opportunities within the chapter. The following is a brief explanation of our work: 1. We have decided to make the Christmas party a potluck thereby saving the money spent for other purposes such as advertising. 2. We authorized Tish Stidman to use $375 for advertising our chapter in the Golf Triad Today magazine. We will run three ads in April, June and September respectively and will request an article to run about our chapters activities in conjunction with the ads. 3. We authorized $50 to be spent for an Alumni/Member BBQ at Maple Leaf Golf Course on June 8, This will cover the cost of meat/buns and members will be asked to bring other dishes. 4. We will have future board meetings on Sunday afternoons. We will have one open board meeting each year in the autumn so members can bring their issues to the board. Of course, members can always call board members during the year to ask that specific issues be addressed at the next board meeting. 5. We will continue to have the social gathering meetings the second Monday of every month at The Out West Restaurant at 6 PM. This is a great place to welcome prospective members. 6. Tournament payments will be made to the clubs by members as they check in unless the tournament is at a country club in which case the members will send their checks to the host in advance of the outing. We strongly urge members to pay in cash/check which saves the clubs credit card fees and makes them happy with us. Prize money will be given to the host at the beginning of the outing and should be in cash, preferably exact amounts. 7. Dave Jacobson has created a list of ready-play rules that he hopes we will use to keep our play to within the 4 hours 15 minutes most clubs request. 8. Kathy Giba is creating a list of social events, one per month, and lining up members to sponsor them. We hope all the members will join us in making this a social AND golf club per our national rules and regulations. 9. Cindy Green and Tish Stidham are working on brochures and banner to advertise our club especially when we are playing a course. If you have any questions about these decisions or want more specifics about them, please call any of the board members. We are eager to hear your thoughts and ideas! ~Jeanne Peters, President Message from Golf Chairperson As you can see our golf schedule has filled out nicely. A number of new courses and a few new hosts have been added! Steve is still working on the details for the July 4 th weekend outing and should have things nailed down in a few weeks. We still need hosts for Meadowlands 6/29 and Stony Creek 7/20 so if you have not hosted an event you may want to consider one of these dates. Any member who has hosted an event in the past will be glad to help you. ~Dave Jacobson, Golf Chairperson From the Communications Chairperson Make sure you pick up a copy of Triad Golf Today to view our ad! We will run it in April, June and September. If it brings in new members we may keep it part of our marketing plan for our chapter. In addition to the ad published in April June and Sept Triad Golf Today will pub- Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Sacramento's Wine Country Classic - May 17-18, Two nights, two rounds of golf, dinners and much more. Our ad will be in the printed and electronic version of Triad Golf Today. ~Tish Stidham, Communications Chair Summary: Triad ASGA Golf Outing Our 2013 kick off golf tournament was held at Jamestown Park golf course on March 16 th hosted by Ms. Carroll Jennings. Complimentary cold bottled water was distributed as mother nature greeted us with 74 degree temperatures which was quite a sudden warm up from the cold wet winter days before. By mid afternoon her gusty March winds would began to add a little more difficulty to the already challenging championship course. Before play, we welcomed our newest member Ms. Judy Paige to her first official golf outing. Sixteen Triad ASGA members attended and were divided into four teams for a two best ball contest with handicap. First place team awards went to Steve Motsinger, Jeanne Peters, Judy Paige and Jack Szydlowski with a total of 105. Second place team awards went to Ralph Pitts, Kathy Giba, Landon Wood and Dave Jacobson with a total of 124. With a little Irish luck and skill, closest to the pen awards on the final par three hole #17 went to Frank Dorn and closest to the pen for the women went to Carroll Jennings. Congratulations to all the winners! Fun, food and fellowship were enjoyed by all following the outing at Ham s restaurant. 3 Golf Quiz: Fellow Golfers here are a few questions and answers from the USGA advance rules test. Next month we will conclude with question and answers Hooray! QUESTIONS: 1. In foursome match play, player A, whose turn it is to play, plays first from the tee. Then, his partner, B, plays from the tee as though it is a four-ball event. What is the ruling? A) There is no penalty; B's ball is disregarded and the side must continue with A's ball. B) There is a one stroke penalty; the side must continue with B's ball. The next stroke will be the side's fourth stroke. C) The side incurs the loss of hole penalty. 2. If a person is standing near enough to the flagstick so that he may touch it, then he is deemed to be attending the flagstick. True False 3. In stroke play, a player thinks that his tee shot is out of bounds and plays a provisional ball. On reaching the place where his ball lies, he is still in doubt about the status of his original ball and announces that he will play a second ball under the Rules. What is the ruling? A) He should play both the original ball and the provisional ball, which will be the second ball under the Rules and report the facts to the Committee. B) He may play a second ball from the tee since the Rules provide that a provisional ball may never be a second ball. C) If he plays another ball from the tee, it becomes the ball in play, lying three, and the original ball is lost. 4. In stroke play, a player putted while his caddie stood on the fringe of the green on an extension of the line of putt behind the ball. What is the ruling? A) There is no penalty since the caddie was not standing on the putting green. B) There is no penalty if the caddie inadvertently stood on an extension of the player's line of putt behind the ball but not to assist or advise him. C) There is a two stroke penalty regardless of the circumstances. 5. In match play, a player's ball lies in a large fairway bunker. He makes a stroke at the ball and it comes to rest in the same bunker, a great distance from its previous spot. His caddie rakes the area where he played his stroke. What is the ruling? A) There is no penalty. B) There is a two stroke penalty. C) There is a loss of hole penalty. 6. In stroke play, a player holes a putt with a club in one hand, while holding the removed flagstick with his other hand. What is the ruling? A) There is no penalty. B) There is a one stroke penalty. C) There is a two stroke penalty. 7. In stroke play, a player positions his golf cart so that he can stand on it to play his ball that was resting in a large bush just beyond the reach of his club if he were to stand on the ground. What is the ruling? A) If he stands on the cart and plays the stroke, there is no penalty. B) If he stands on the cart and plays the stroke, there is a two stroke penalty. C) If he removes the cart before he plays the stroke, there is a penalty. 8. In stroke play, a group of players arrive at a teeing ground and find one tee-marker missing. They determine the area of the teeing ground based on the existing tee-marker and the shape of the tee and play from the place they judge to be the teeing ground. What is the ruling? A) If the Committee is satisfied that the players did not gain an advantage from where they played, their scores should be accepted without penalty. B) There is no penalty; however, the error must be corrected or they should be disqualified. C) Each of the players incurs a two stroke penalty and the error must be corrected or they should be disqualified. 9. In stroke play, a player strikes his ball into a water hazard. He finds two balls where he expects his ball to be, neither is identifiable, and the position of either ball interferes with the play of the other. One ball is likely to be his and the other could be that of a fellow-competitor or an abandoned ball. What is the ruling? A) He must select one of the balls and play it according to the Rules. B) He must discontinue play and call for a member of the Committee.
