1 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Triad Chapter - American Singles Golf Association March 2009 From Our President In our meeting last night, there was a lot of talk about the good weather the weekend before and future golf outings. Details will be in other articles. I know there is concern about golf courses surviving and concern for our personal well being. Despite setbacks, you still can't beat a good game of golf with friends. We had a good turnout last night! We hope to have more meetings like this one. Harold Kincaid, General Manager of Reynolds Park brought us some good information, more speakers to come thanks to Eddie Sparks. Everyone had a chance to pick up promotional ASGA material. We hope to attract more single golfers. It will take each one of us spreading the word. It is like the corny joke about the hacker that hit his ball so bad, it ended up on a huge ant hill in the woods. The golfer proceeded to try and hit the ball off the ant hill to no avail. Each time he swung, ants would fly everywhere, but the ball would still be there. One of the remaining ants said to another one, "What can we do? We are going to be next!" The other ant replied, "Get on the ball!" That's what we have to do as a club. Get on the ball and get the flyers posted in various public places. Start handing out business cards to prospects. For the record, there are a few corrections for January s newsletter. On January 1 st at Brunswick Plantation, dinner was wherever a group wanted to go. Friday night we met at The Boundary House in Calabash for great tasting food, drink, and laughs. Men s Low Net on Saturday was won by Ken Mabe ~Tom Loughlin, Triad ASGA President February Meeting On February 9 th, twenty-two members met at Out West Steak House in Kernersville for our monthly meeting. Guest speaker was Harold Kincaid, General Manager at Reynolds Park in Winston-Salem. His background included a degree from Appalachian State where he lettered for four years. Managed Libby Hill Seafood and other restaurants then went on to own Grandview Golf Course for seventeen years. When the golf course was annexed by Winston-Salem, taxes became too much for the course to bear. He found a home at Reynolds Park where prices on food have been lowered and work on the course has begun by rebuilding the ladies tees. New furniture has been purchased to alleviate the gloominess of the club house. Prices at Reynolds are twenty-nine dollars on weekends, twentyfive dollars on weekdays, and twenty dollars for seniors sixty years old and up. He spoke on golf etiquette. Make sure the group in front is out of range when advancing your ball, stay out of each other s putting line, don t drive carts beside a teeing group, play ready golf, and take care of the course by raking traps and replacing divots. Signup sheets for upcoming events were placed on the table. Pinebrook CC deadline is March 28 th for April 4 th play, price $39.00, contact Frank Dorn. Due to popular demand, The Legacy outing is filling up fast. We have 23 players signed up as of this February 9th. Norma has called the course and arranged for one more tee time, so we have room for 5 more players. If you want to be part of this great weekend (April 18-19), please reply to Norma Hall ASAP. Cost will be $44/day and tee times are at 12:00 each day. If you will be signing up, don t forget to make a reservation at The Best Western Pinehurst Inn prior to March 17. We have a block of 12 rooms for our group. Be sure to mention you are with the Triad ASGA golf outing when you make your reservation. Arthur is 90 years old. He's played golf every day since his retirement 25 years ago. One day he arrives home looking downcast. "That's it," he tells his wife. "I'm giving up golf. My eyesight has gotten so bad that once I've hit the ball, I can't see where it went." His wife sympathizes and makes him a cup of tea. As they sit down, she says, "Why don't you take my brother with you and give it one more try?" "That's no good," sighs Arthur. "Your brother's a hundred and three. He can't help." "He may be a hundred and three," says the wife, "but his eyesight is perfect." So the next day, Arthur heads off to the golf course with his brother-inlaw. He tees up, takes an almighty swing, and squints down the fairway. He turns to the brother-in-law. "Did you see the ball?" "Of course I did!" replies the brother-inlaw. "I have perfect eyesight." "Where did it go?" asks Arthur. "I don't remember." 3 For Golfers who like to travel: Our club has been invited to participate in a joint outing in the Atlanta area the weekend of April This is an open weekend on our chapter s schedule. Peachtree City Chapter of ASGA Spring Fling 2009 April 24, 25 and 26 th 2009 Burrrrrrrrr... we are ready for warmer weather, golf and the Peachtree City Annual Spring Fling. This year our golf events will take place at three different courses. We invite you to join us for lots of fun and fellowship the weekend of April 24, This event will be limited to 72 participants. 5 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION MARCH, 2009 Event Dates: May 22-25, 2009 Just Announced Over 60 Signed-Up Already! In 2005, 300+ ASGA members attended our annual Memorial Day Reunion at The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA. We haven t been back since. After three great years at Pinehurst, members felt it was time for a change. (Isn t this the year of change? ) Choosing a location for this many golfers always presents its issues. We can t simply take any hotel in any city and move 300 folks from golf course to golf course. But once you re in Hot Springs, you ve got everything within arms reach: a beautiful hotel with a bunch of your friends, food, fun, fellowship and fairways. The Homestead is a unique venue in itself. It s difficult to think of a president of the United States who has not visited or stayed there. Calvin Coolidge and his wife celebrated their honeymoon there. It s history goes back ten years prior to when our nation was founded (1766). The Old Course, on property, has the longest continuous operating first tee box in the country. If you like history, this place is historical. If you like hanging out for 3-4 days with fellow members and having more fun than you can imagine, you need to look at what we have to offer. We announced this via a national broadcast recently, and within two weeks of the announcement, 60 people had already signedup. There s no need to wait. You can register now and the hotel will not charge the package price until April 22. We have many other events scheduled for you this year as well. All events are posted at SinglesGolf.com/events Want to Go to the Homestead Free? Well, as you know, nothing in life is really free. But this is pretty close to free. Here s the deal: you know people. We know that. Simply get a friend, relative business associate to start a new chapter in a new city and if at least ten folks join the new chapter by May 20th, your registration for the Memorial Day event at the homestead, a $539 value, will be paid. We re not talking resolutions here, but your chapter. Hopefully by now, your new Board of Directors is operating in full fashion and all positions are filled and your chapter management folks are fully trained. In late January, we held training webinars for incoming chapter presidents and each of your four committee head positions (golf, social, membership and communication) so everyone ought to know their duties and responsibilities. The first job, of course, is to have fun. If you missed any of the leadership webinars, just go to the Chapter Management section of SinglesGolf.com and there s plenty of information there to help you do your job a little better. If at anytime you believe your chapter needs a little advice or you re just concerned about anything, you re welcome to use the CONTACT US form on the website and we ll be back in touch usually same day. Never hesitate to contact ASGA about anything! Is Your Website Updated? Golf season is officially open by declaration of Mother Nature. She s also asked that you update your website with a lot of new and exciting information. Why? Because those new folks checking us out want to see a whole-lot-of-things-goin -on and if you ve only got one event planned for the Spring, well... think about it... would you join? Your golf and social committees should be hard at work putting together an agenda, so get that stuff posted right away. In February, the national website got 621 unique visitors EACH DAY. And just like all politics is local, people join SinglesGolf to see what s going on locally. So give your website a run-thru and see it for the first time through the eyes of a new person visiting your organization for the first time. Make sure all the links work and that there is ample contact information and your chapter looks EXCITING! Did you know your chapter can get a free website?
