1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association September 2010 President s Corner The BIGGEST golf event on the Seattle Chapter s 2010 calendar is just days away, or already underway as the September newsletter goes to press. There is nothing left to say about the Multi-Chapter Event in Central Oregon. Now it is time to create memories. Looking back on August, we had a busy month on the golf course with four sponsored events and several informal outings arranged by members. The hosts for all of the events did a marvelous job organizing the events and pulling them off. Kudos to the Whispering Firs participants who donated over $700 to the fund to expand American Lake Golf Course to a full 18 holes. For those who may not have heard about American Lake, it is a nine-hole golf course reserved for military personnel and it is designed to accommodate severely wounded service personnel. Government (taxpayer) money cannot be used to expand the course to 18 holes, so a private fund raising effort is underway. The details for the October golf events were not available at press time. An Orange Ball event is being organized for the last weekend in October. At the August membership meeting, there was a rumor that a golf event is being planned for the first weekend in October. Hopefully, both of these events will be on the calendar that appears elsewhere in this newsletter. Perhaps the most important event on the club calendar also occurs in October. At the October membership meeting, those in attendance will be electing a president, golf committee chairman, membership committee chairman, social committee chairman and communications committee chairman for The presidentelect will then appoint the remaining officers- vice president; secretary, treasurer; webmaster; newsletter editor and handicap chairman. The president-elect will also need to appoint people to monitor the telephone hotline and coordinate the chapter s electronic mail. Beginning in 2011, the members serving on the board, monitoring the hotline and coordinating the electronic mail will earn credit toward the Participation Award that will be given out at the November 2011 membership meeting. Did you forget about the Participation Award? At the 2010 November membership meeting one of our chapter members will be recognized for being our most active member. For 2010, the decision will be based on attendance at golf events, the hosting of golf events and the hosting of social events. The determination will be based on participation through the Orange Ball event. In preparation for the all-important October elections, there are two jobs that remain to be profiled: chapter president and electronic mail coordinator. President The president: a) presides at all regular and special meetings of the Association; b) supervises the affairs of the Association; c) appoints the committees authorized by the Board of Directors; d) is an ex-officio member of all committees of the Association; e) prepares an annual budget to be presented to the Board of Directors at the 1st quarter board meeting; f) reports to the membership on the Association plans for the year by February; g) presents an annual report to the membership on the state of the Association in December; h) works for a smooth transition of the incoming administration; i) acts as a liaison with the National organization; Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) - Sacramento and Seattle's Eagle Crest Resort Weekend - September 10-12, Location: Bend, Oregon - Asheville's Mountain Fall Weekend - October 15-17, Location: Lake Lure, NC - Battle at the Beach - November 11-14, Location: Myrtle Beach, SC Office Hours: 9:00am to 2:00pm, M-F (Eastern) National Office: or GOLFMATE Regular Meeting Date: SECOND TUESDAY of each month Next Meeting: September 14th, 2010 Meeting Location: The Big Fish Grill Northup Way, Kirkland, Our Website: seattle.singlesgolf.com Our Hotline: (See next page for list of officers and board members.) To join, renew dues, make a change of address, phone, etc., call National Hotline at left or go to

2 Seattle Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association President Tim Witthauer Chairman of the Board Mary Jo Eland Golf Chairperson Steve Mills Social Chairperson Sandy L Allier sandylallier@aol.com Membership Chairperson Brenda Eggimann b.eggimann@comcast.net Bruce Bondy Communications Chairperson Janice Sheridan janicesheridan@aol.com Secretary Pat Walsh Patricia4835@comcast.net Treasurer Evie Falkin eviebmw@hotmail.com Newsletter/Hdcp Wayne Mulholland Wayne5117@hotmail.com Webmaster Rick Frodsham rickfrodsham@gmail.com Vice President Kent Christenson Kentc2@mac.com j) performs others duties as assigned by the Board of Directors. The president is elected by the members in attendance at the October membership meeting. Once the president has been elected, he or she must find people for the appointed positions and provide a list of the persons who comprise the incoming administration to the National organization, usually by December. Electronic Mail Coordinator. I have left the most important job for last in this series of columns. Electronic mail is the lifeblood of the Seattle Chapter. We use electronic mail to advertise golf and social events, distribute pairings, and arrange things such as carpools to out of town events. The goal is to have someone checking the club s in-box at least twice a day, so the coordinator must have access to a computer. The coordinator is also responsible for maintaining the group s electronic distribution lists. We have found that this is a job that can easily be shared by two people, so anyone who may be interested shouldn t be discouraged by the effort required- simply find a friend to share the burden with you. The electronic mail coordinator is appointed by the president-elect and is not a voting member of the Board of Directors. If you have any questions about this job, please contact either Pat Bonner or Karly Kniffin. Anyone having an interest in any of the administrative jobs required for the club to function should let me know of their interest via electronic mail, preferably before 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 10, The only requirement for any of these jobs is that a person has been a member of the chapter in good standing since at least June 30, Don t be shy- volunteer to serve your club by October 10, 2010! ~Tim Witthauer, President Past Events WHISPERING FIRS You guys are the best! We raised $735 for the Wounded Warrior Golf Fund. Thank you everyone for contributing to this worthy cause. Also, thanks to everyone for your perseverance with the rain, especially the last groups. We ordered sun, but we all know how that goes. WINNERS: Most Fairways Women: Adrienne Brown with 13 Men: Brian Lucarelli with 12 Long Drive Men: Joe Mitchell Women: Renee Marshall KP# 5 (Women): No winner KP# 8 (Men): Ben Watson KP# 12 (Men): No winner KP# 15 (Women): Pat Walsh 35 9 Since there were only three other names on the competition cards, we used the no winner money for a second place prize for LD and KP. They were: Long Drive on # 17 (second place): Jan Friesen KP on # 15 (second place): Adrienne Moe 41 8 Because of the rain, we were unable to have a straight drive so save those straight ones for another time! Many of you donated your winnings to the Wounded Warrior Fund and we thank you. ~Marty Thielemann and Adrienne Moe, Coordinators Camaloch Casual Golf Event We had 20 golfers for our casual event at Camaloch on Sunday, August 22. The sky looked threatening as we started out on Sunday morning, but the clouds parted and we had good weather after about five minutes of light rain. Woohoo! Camaloch is a fun course and in good shape but can be challenging with their narrow fairways and undulating greens. After we finished our round of golf, we met back at the clubhouse for beverages, a light meal and to announce our competition winners. The following people won prizes: Lynn Johnson for men's longest drive Mary Jo Eland for women's longest drive Margaret Lai for closest to the pin on hole 9 Jann Sheridan for closest to the pin on hole 11. We also had a "blind" putting contest. Everyone was asked to keep track of their putts on hole 2. The "team" was randomly selected after completing our round of golf. They were asked to add up their total putts on hole 2. The winning team members of the "blind" putting contest were

3 Ron Voss, Mary Jo Eland, Arlene Davin, and Stu Boyd. Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to everyone for coming out! ~Margaret, Carol, and Mary Anne Druid s Glen Our Druid's Glen event, which was billed as a chance for former members to join us, resulted in only a few alumni coming out to play with us. But we had forty-three players who enjoyed what turned out to be a nice day, weather-wise, with Mt. Rainier clearing off enough to see it by the time we socialized on the patio after golf. The contest for the day was low gross for all the even numbered holes and Terry Mead and Gary Fox tied with 43 for the nine hole gross score for the men. Carol Whelan's guest, Carolyn Cortez beat Carol by 1 stroke to win, with Carol coming in 2nd. KP's for men were won by Terry Mead and Bob Foxall. KP's for women were won by Mary Hawes and Connie Manchester. There was also straight drive (closest to the line) won by Roger Wilson for the men and there was a women's winner, but the person writing this report up (Sue Haley) regrettably can't remember who the winner was. So congrats to all who took home the prizes and thanks to all who attended and kept up a good pace of play. ~Sue Haley, Coordinator Avalon Event On August 21st, the 2nd Annual Big Lake Event had 44 enthusiastic golfers show up for Avalon. Cassie Jacobson and Adrienne Brown organized the events. A handicapped team competition was held and 1st place went to Ben Watson, Pat Walsh, Brian Lucarelli, and Cassie Jacobson. Second place went to Mary Anne Garvich, Britt Cole, Sorrel Fischer & Kent Christianson. KP and Squiggly line winners were Carletta Barnes, Pat Bonner, Pat Walsh, Brian Lucarelli, Britt Cole. Dinner and dancing was enjoyed by all at The Big Rock Gas Station. Adrienne & Cassie once again arranged for "Zazzos" to dance to. After an evening of dancing, a group of die hards went on to The Big Lake Bar and Grill to dance some more. Then on to Cassie's for Campfire, Smore's and hot tubing. ~Cassie Jacobson, Coordinator Adrienne Brown, Coordinator Editorial Once again I have suffered another computer disaster. This time it was Windows 7. No one knows what happened but also no one could fix it. I spent a total of 7 hours with my ear to the phone while talking with 3 people in India. Over a 3 day period they couldn t figure it out. The final result was re-installing Windows 7. If any of you know what a nightmare is with a computer try that once. I lost a lot of my notes and programs and especially things for this newsletter. I m 4 days late getting it on it s way but hoping everyone gets a copy before the meeting. Just a few short days now until the extravaganza in Bend and we re really looking forward to that one. A hundred plus people coming from all over the US of A and John Sweeney did most of the work. Kudos to John whatever that is. Coming back from that we have the Walla Walla event. Too bad it filled up so quickly but snooze ya lose don t ya see. The Orange Ball is just about finalized and will take place on Halloween. I feel like I just had the 4 th of July and here it is rocketing into Christmas. That s about it. My jokes went with the rest of my stuff but by next month we should be back to normal. Yeah, right! ~Editor Wayne About Our Members Happy Birthday to these members: Carletta Barnes - 10/01 Sheila Dwyer - 09/28 Janice Gronenthal - 09/09 Mary Hawes - 09/08 Ann Hinken - 10/14 Kathy Jendrick - 09/29 Katy Jusenius - 09/15 Hal Lettice - 10/11 Susan Mayon - 09/26 Alvin Ney - 09/15 Agnes Spadafora - 09/21 John Sweeney - 09/24 Lis Weller - 09/07 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Greg Brace - 09/30/2010 Gary Fox - 09/30/2010 Karen Kohler - 09/30/2010 Maureen O'Brien - 09/30/2010 Stephen Swihart - 09/30/2010 Lis Weller - 09/30/2010 Welcome newest members: Kathleen Auld - Joined 08/18/2010 Moshe Genauer - Joined 07/19/2010 Michael Givens - Joined 07/06/2010 Joan Lasersohn - Joined 08/04/2010 Mary Sichko - Joined 07/27/2010 These members recently renewed: Mary Baebler Jan Holt Jeanette Kelley Patricia Walsh These members did not renew their dues: (date shown is date membership expired) Bruce Bondy - 07/31/2010 Bill Gauthier - 07/31/2010 David Neils - 07/31/2010 Anita Riksheim - 08/31/2010 Our chapter currently has 109 members. ONLY A TRUE GOLFER WILL UNDERSTAND THIS... Don't buy a putter until you've had a chance to throw it. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot. It's not a gimme if you're still away.

5 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION SEPTEMBER 2010 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, we ll return to the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up some great courses nearby (Meadowland Golf Course and Farmstead Golf Links) and have arranged for 10:30am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. In addition, there is optional day-of-arrival golf at Burning Ridge and dayof-departure golf at Arcadian Shores. Date: November Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf, enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and a Friday night cookout. In addition, if you purchased one of our packages and attended this event last year, you ll have a $25 loyalty credit working in your favor! So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. A recent poll was made asking members to give us input for a location. Results: 52% wanted to support the folks in the Florida panhandle (i.e. Panama City with Gulf Shores / Sandestin suggested), 28 percent wanted Daytona and the the final 20% went to returning to Orlando. Other suggestions were south Florida (Naples area), Sarasota, New Orleans, and a few other southern cities. ASGA looks at a number of elements in putting together a New Year s event such as nearby airport, available courses, weather, hotel accommodations and proximity to where the attendees come from. If we can have it in a location where percent of the attendees can drive to the event, we ll have a much larger turnout than if it s a location where 90% of the attendees would have to fly. Stay tuned! Denver ASGA Up and Running Congratulations to Dawn Lindsay and all the volunteers who ve helped put Denver ASGA on the map. The new chapter hit 45 new members in no time flat. Denver s a great golfing area, plus you have the extra benefit of your ball flying an additional 100 yards! Thank you, Dawn, for your efforts. We hope ASGA has a positive impact on many lives in the Denver area. We re Starting New Chapters The national office is on a mission to start new chapters anywhere there s a need - - and golf courses. We re working on New Haven, CT, St. Louis, MO, Columbus, OH and Buffalo, NY, Virginia Beach, VA, Omaha, NE, Des Moines, IA, Springfield, IL, Boise, ID, Portland, OR, Pittsburgh, PA, Boston, MA, Harrisburg, PA, Davenport, IA, Wichita, KS and Salt Lake City, UT. We ve set-up a full section on our website dedicated to starting a new chapter: SinglesGolf.com/start If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc. in a distant city and think they d be an ideal candidate for getting a new ASGA chapter started, please have them contact us. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone or GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
