1 CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association March 2014 President s Corner I have always said that there has to be golf in heaven or it wouldn't be heaven. Obviously though, God didn't invent golf. He probably wonders how he created people that can be taught by their mistakes and learn from certain lessons but insist on forcing this contradiction we call golf. We can take the winter off from riding our bikes and get right back on them with no problem, but why not golf? Our season has just begun and at Legion most of us proved that our anxieties were justified. We definitely need to play more golf. Whoever said practice makes perfect never saw me practicing deceleration, slicing and sculling. How are we supposed to keep our hands soft and our heads still if we forget we were supposed to do that? I'm sure it's only an equipment problem. I wonder if there are more golf clubs sold in the spring just like gym memberships on January 1st. Well, roll up your sleeves and roll out your day timer and start scheduling some springtime events. Yeah, I know you'd rather play in July when it's 80 but I also know you'd rather play well in July when it's 80. Remember the old saying a sailor doesn't learn his skills on calm seas. We have the perfect climate here in Seattle. Remember our chapter meetings are the second Tuesday of each month and in March we should have Chris Aoki teaching us a thing or two about course management. We may have forgotten some tips about execution but shooting a better score due to better judgment around hazards and club selection has to reinforce our determination to find our game. We won't be having the dessert auction this year but bring a dessert to share at our March 11 meeting. See you there, ~Lynn Johnson, President The First Golf Outing of the 2014 Season Even though the weather on Sunday, February 16 th was cold and somewhat rainy, there are always those intrepid golfers who start and finish and have a great time in spite of the elements. These are the results of the two competitions. Pat Bonner and Bob Strom tied for lowest putts at 33. Karen Kohler, Carletta Barnes and Brian Lucarelli shared second place with scores of 35. The women s KP s were won by Pat Walsh and Andi Hudson. Brian Lucarelli took the men s KP on the 4 th hole. After golf, the gang went to the Tulalip Resort Casino for dinner and socializing. It was a great start to ~Mary Jo Eland A Day in the Life of Golf Lessons By Chris Aoki Now is the time to get ready for golf season. Feet and ankles can become tight and lose their ability to rotate during the winter. Do a few simple and easy ankle rotations. Be careful to avoid forcing a stretch or moving too fast. Your feet and ankles are the part of your body that will help move your torso, shoulders and arms. If you kept your feet flat on the ground and tried to twist your torso, you have limited mobility to turn. Even moderate movement of the feet and ankles increases body turn. When prepared, you will avoid stiffness on the first tee, tired feet while walking to the green and possibly a chance of avoiding some back pain. The issue of homelessness is one that continues to impede the progress of the most vulnerable folks in our community, particularly those with children. When families cannot afford housing or lose it because of other crises, the kids suffer the most uprooted from their schools, their friends, and moving from place to place each night. Kids who are homeless now are 75% more likely to be homeless as adults. Our mission at Solid Ground is to end this cycle of homelessness by providing the support and resources that families need to increase their income, learn new life skills, and recover their independence. We recently opened a brand new complex of affordable housing at Magnuson Park, where we now house 74 formerly homeless families and 75 single men and women. Your contribution of $ in December makes that work possible. We were able to assist four families with items they needed to furnish their nes homes beds, towels, school clothes, kitchen supplies and of course, toys for the kids. One of these families, the Johnsons and their three teenage boys, moved into one of our beautiful affordable new apartments shortly before the New Year. Dad has worked for almost twenty years as a carpenter, and was badly injured in a fall two years age. As a result the family lost their home in south King County and spent the last 9 months in a shelter because they didn t have enough income to rent another apartment. He is still recovering, but is in a re-hab program that will allow him to do other work. Mom is now working part-time, and the kids are enrolled in their new schools. Mom and Dad have a chance to breathe again, knowing that they are safe, able to afford their rent and utilities, and that they will get the help they need to get back on their feet. The gifts and gift cards from your organization allowed them to celebrate the new year in a very special way. Thank you again, and have a very good year--- full of hole-in-ones, and birdies! 5 ORLANDO S SUNSHINE FLING MARCH 21-24, 2014 We are returning to the beautiful Mission Inn Resort for the 2014 ASGA Orlando Sunshine Fling. Come enjoy the SUN and temperatures in the low 80's and evening lows in the 70's. We all had such a wonderful time in 2013 we decided to return for all the fun. We also added a second night of dancing in the lounge and pool deck area with games and pool tables. 6 ASGA WESTERN REUNION May 30-June 1, 2014 Every year we have a May golf outing and National has one back east over Memorial Weekend. They annually call theirs The Reunion. So this year we have tabbed ours The Western Reunion. We have also picked a location that most of the members of western chapters of ASGA can get to easily. It s Carson City, home of The Devine Nine, located 30 minutes south of the Reno-Tahoe Airport in Nevada s Capital City. We have scheduled golf on Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st allowing those to travel home late on the 1st or take Monday off and travel then. Golf is scheduled for Dayton Valley on Saturday and Sunridge on Sunday, both beautiful layouts. We have a two night, two golf day package with a dinner on Saturday night plus breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday. The standard package includes lodging, golf, two breakfasts and Saturday dinner. We have both single and double occupancy available. We will be staying at the Gold Dust Resort Hotel and Casino.
