1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Nashville Chapter - American Singles Golf Association October 2009 OCTOBER 31ST: GOLF AT HARPETH HILLS From the President I m thinking about this year s golf outings and what makes them especially fun. Of course, the golf itself is fun (unless you re having a particularly bad day) and it s great to socialize afterwards at the 19 th hole. But one good way to get to know our members is riding in a cart with them for 18 holes. As a man riding in the cart with the ladies, I ve learned a lot. Some are chatty and tell you their life story. Some are quiet and reserved (I think I met two since I ve been in the group) and some are a combination of the two. I m sure the ladies will say the same thing about us men (imagine that). The bottom line is diversity is good and that s what social golf is all about. The opportunity to meet different people with different backgrounds which broadens our experiences and makes us better people. In a world of communication gadgetry that relies more and more on text messaging, let s never forget the importance of social interaction to build lasting relationships. One final note at the October membership meeting we will elect the President and Vice President for At the November meeting, an election will determine the Committee Chairs: Golf, Communications/Webmaster, Membership, and Social. The new President selects the positions of Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, and Legal Advisor. If interested in any of these elected positions, please notify any member of the Nominations Committee (Bob Blaylock, Judy Cummings, Pat Collins, or me) and we will ensure you are included on the candidate list. Please consider volunteering as an officer or Committee Chair position. We have been successful because of the exceptional work of volunteers who are willing to commit their time and energy to sustain our growth as a fun and vibrant association. ~Gary Carson Golf Chair Rain, Rain, Go Away! If you ve been playing golf at the time of this writing you re a hardy golfer. All I know is it s been very wet lately and not very conducive to an enjoyable round of golf. Hopefully, the weather has improved by the time you receive this newsletter. We probably will have played our outing at Oak Hills by the time you read this, hope you were in the group! Coming up is Nashboro on Saturday, October 10 th with tee times beginning at noon. Contact Jim Lazenby to sign up, format is a scramble and cost is $ Tommy James will be coordinating our Harpeth Hills outing on Saturday, October 31 st. This too will be a scramble, tee times beginning at 11:00 a.m., cost is $41.00 (this outing will not have prizes). We have rescheduled Montgomery Bell for Saturday, November 7 th. More info will be coming on this outing. If you can t wait please contact Dick Kell. I appreciate your continued support of responding to my questionnaires and surveys. Hopefully, your responses will help who ever will be running our golf events next season to gain some insight on your preferences on how our golf outings should be organized. It's a great social event and you'll find out what's going on with our group. Amanda Faulk has had some tests run on her lately and we hope she's on the mend. Amanda was in the hospital for a couple of days. Donna Loden is getting out more since her surgery. Understand she's been to dinner with Ann and Pat a few times. The picture of Colin Martin in his wheelchair was good. We're glad to see him a little more mobile. We love having new people in the NSGA. Please bring them to our next meeting. ~Ros Beard, Membership Chair Out of Town Events We were traveling thru a heavy rainstorm Friday morning on our way to Chattanooga with forecast of rain for another weekend event. But, upon our arrival at Valleybrook Golf and Country Club, the rain let up and after a couple holes of light drizzle the weather was dry for the rest of the day. The remainder of the weekend was overcast, but dry, giving us a delightful weekend of pleasant golf. We were also rewarded with an outstanding buffet dinner at the Valleybrook Clubhouse at the end of the day. Those attending the Palms Friday night were again entertained by an unusual mix of dances and dancers while others were relaxing with their choice of drink by the pool. Bart's Lakeshore Restaurant pro- vided great food and a beautiful view of Lake Chickamauga for Saturday evening. The band played some very good music although there was a limited dance floor for dancing. Overall, thanks to everyone for a great weekend in Chattanooga. Our lone Closest to the Pin winner Friday was Claude Pass. Rules and More Rules How many clubs are you allowed in your golf bag? A. A maximum of 13 clubs. B. A maximum of 14 clubs. C. A maximum of 15 clubs. D. A maximum of 16 clubs And the answer is... The answer is B. A maximum of 14 clubs is allowed. USGA rule 4-4 stipulates that the maximum number of clubs a player is allowed at the start of a round is 14 clubs. A player is limited to the clubs he/she starts with except that if they started with less than 14 clubs, they may add any number of additional clubs up to a maximum of 14 total clubs including the clubs with which they started. The addition of a club or clubs must not "unduly" delay play and the additional clubs added can not come from the bag of any other person playing on the course. Partners may share clubs, provided that the total number of clubs carried by the sharing partners does not exceed 14. 4 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION OCTOBER 2009 We have three national events headed you way, November's Battle at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, SC, New Year's in Orlando and St. Andrews in August, Registration for the New Year's event has just opened (online), about 100 are registered for Myrtle Beach already and 195 are registered for our Scotland trip. It always helps planning events when we know how many are coming, so please register early if you can. The beauty of this is that you can arrive as many as three (3) days early and stay up to three (3) days late and it will only cost you $64 per person (based on dlb. occ.) to stay an additional night, or $128 to room by yourself. Battle At The Beach, Myrtle Beach, SC In a matter of a few weeks, over 100 people have registered for the Battle at the Beach so far, which will be held at the Marriott Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, SC. This hotel is a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. New Year s and Golf in Orlando We were here last year and it's just the perfect venue for our group. Open to all ASGA members. Scotland is Headed Toward Sellout As of late September, nearly 200 people have signed-up for our trip to Scotland, July 31-August 8, We originally set a limit of 128 players but we've secured additional rooms and courses to accommodate our needs. St. Andrews, Scot-land is no doubt the most special place on this planet for golfers. We'll stay at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel on the outskirts of St. Andrews and on the edge of the North Sea. We have room for about another people. At this point, you'll only need to put 10% down.
