1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Hartford, CT Chapter - American Singles Golf Association December 2009 President s Message Wow, can you believe it s the end of the year already! I hope everyone had a wonderful and peaceful Thanksgiving and can still fit into your golf shorts. So far, we have been lucky with above normal temperatures and I have spotted quite a few golfers out and about well into November. So, enjoy it while we can and let s look forward to next April once more!! Many, many thanks to all the hard working Board Members and their committee people. Without them, we could never have had all the wonderful and smoothrunning events that we did. Special thanks go to George Duffy, our Golf Chair extraordinaire, and all his committee members. From Opening Day, with the spectacular weather we had, especially for the end of April (some have said it was too hot), to the Ryder Cup, it was a pleasure and a privilege to work with him. Please remember to check our website, frequently. There are still lots of fun events happening, even though we can t play golf right now. Any input for some more events would be heartily welcome, as our Social Chair position is presently vacant (any takers???). A special thanks, as well, to the Membership Chairs, Barbara Wysocki and Tom Woods, who brought in 24 (yes, count em, 24!) new members this year. Our little chapter increased by almost 20% in one year and Barbara Wysocki (Tom Woods couldn t make it) won a National contest for increase in membership, allowing her to attend the ASGA National event, New Year s Eve in Orlando, free!! And who says volunteering doesn t have its rewards? So, now with winter arriving, instead of dreaming of sugarplums, a lot of us will be dreaming of holes-in-one, and lush fairways and greens in the 2010 golf season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all HASGA members. Golf Joke of the Month: Question - What are the four worst words you can hear during a round of golf? Answer - It's still your turn. ~Betsy Schwartz, Hartford ASGA President HARTFORD ASGA MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING January 19, 2010 BILLY TEE S 150 Sebethe Drive, Cromwell Join us for the Monthly General Meeting, where everyone has the option to purchase food from the menu (everyone is on their own for payment) and enjoy the cash bar! After some socializing and libations, the group moved into our 'private room' for dinner, drinks, and the business meeting. Luckily, the room's inside wall has lots of glass, as some members maneuvered to ensure they would be facing the big screen TVs for the UCONN men's basketball game. At dinner, the pumpkin raviolis entrée was one of the more popular items on the menu, and was, those who had it agreed, delicious. The Billy Tee's garlic bread (warm and tasty), also was enjoyed by many in the group. At the business portion of the meeting, Betsy Schwartz identified the people who had been nominated for the 2010 board, and asked if there were any additional nominations. No 'new' names were nominated, and the previously identified nominees were elected by voice vote. Those elected were: President Golf Betsy Schwartz Nancy Hammond and Mary LeBel (co-chairs) Communication Cathy Duncan and Jerry Maxwell (co-chairs) Social Membership VACANT - Help, Help, Help! Tom Woods and Patty Landry (co-chairs) Nancy Hammond and Mary LeBel were unable to attend the meeting, so Barbara Wysocki and Jerry Maxwell talked about some 2010 golf season items. Barbara related that Nancy and Mary are still in the process of forming the 2010 Golf Committee, and are looking for volunteers. Barbara said that Nancy and Mary intend to have golf committee members volunteer to Chair or Co-Chair the individual golf events. The Event Chair/Co-Chairs will handle the entire event from 'soup to nuts' or maybe in this case, 'tees to greens.' Details will be worked-out at upcoming Golf Committee meetings. Barbara also said they hope to have a golf outing on the 'Cape' in 2010, with invitations going to other local ASGA chapters. Jerry said that arrangements have been made for Portland West to be the 'course' for Friday Night Golf for all of Gerry D'Amora of Portland West has guaranteed Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

3 us that we will have 'nines' available, on an alternating basis, from the beginning of May to the end of September, Specific details will be in future newsletters. Cathy Duncan reminded us of the Holiday Party on December 5, and also talked about an upcoming Middletown fun event. Cathy said that additional information will be distributed in Tee Blasts and/or Event e- mails. With all the good news and some of the excellent food and drink digested, the meeting was adjourned. The following members were in attendance: Jean Cooper, George Duffy, Cathy Duncan, Dennis Franta, Ellen Gregory, Patty Landry, Robert Layman, Jerry Maxwell, Shirley Monk, Betsy Schwartz, Chris Spence, Tom Woods, and Barbara Wysocki. ~Jerry Maxwell Hard Work Rewarded Kudos to Tom Woods and Barbara Wysocki, HASGA 2009 Membership Co- Chairs. As an ASGA membership drive initiative, ASGA National offered one ORLANDO NEW YEAR'S EVE package 'free' (travel expenses not included) to any Chapter that gained at least ten new members and also had ten more members than were in the chapter at the beginning of the year. And thanks to the hard work of Tom and Barbara; along with strong support from many other HASGA Chapter members, we've done that! At the November Board meeting, Betsy suggested the package be awarded to Tom and Barbara, and the attending Board members concurred. A prior commitment prevents Tom from attending, but Barbara will be spending New Years in Orlando; and she won't be traveling alone. Jan Rusczyk - our newest HASGA member and a Barbara Wysocki recruit - will, at her own expense, also be attending the Orlando event. So, at the next HASGA gathering, we should have a round of applause for Tom and Barbara; and then a second round for all those members who've worked to increase and retain HASGA membership. ~Jerry Maxwell October Haunting October is the month for pumpkins, witches, ghosts, and goblins. On October 30, HASGA members were invited to the Newington Fire House on Main Street to tour the "haunted house" that was created at the fire station. They did a great job and proceeds went to a local food share, along with canned goods that were collected. Ellen Gregory and Barbara Wysocki along with several of her guests witnessed the "haunting". Afterwards they went to Joey Garlic's for yummy eggplant french fries, salads, and pasta dishes. Comedy Show The VFW in Rocky Hill hosted a comedy show on November 7. Three comedians were featured that night. We laughed a lot and some of us fell "victim" to the comics' jokes, but it was all in good fun and we had a great time. Those who attended were Jean Gowdey and her friend Maureen, Margaret Doyle, Pat Sullivan, and Barbara Wysocki with several guests. Happy Hour at Chuck's A social night took place on Friday, November 13 at Chuck's in Rocky Hill. It was great to be back at a favorite, local restaurant that has half-price appetizers until 6:30 p.m. during the week. Linda Gamache, Bob Wimler, Tom Woods, Jan Rusczyk, and Barbara Wysocki with several guests, enjoyed potato skins, shrimp cocktail, nachos, clams casino, and crab cakes; just to name a name a few items that were ordered along with our favorite beverages. We sat and talked for hours about the kind of season it was for all of us (the highs and the lows) before we departed about 9 p.m. Third Friday at the Carousel Museum The Carousel Museum in Bristol held a Third Friday Social Night on November 20. The museum is in an old brick building where many carousel horses are on display. It was fun to view them and to read about their history. Upstairs there is a "fire" museum with real bells and alarms you can ring. Light refreshments were served; and a local band played a variety of songs that we enjoyed listening to. Those who attended were Brian Stere, Jan Rusczyk and two guests, and Barbara Wysocki with two guests. Some went to Pazio in Glastonbury afterwards for a late dinner. Holiday Party Our annual holiday party was held Saturday, December 5 at the Hawthorn Inn. It

4 was also the night of our first snowfall of the season, so getting there was a little tricky at times, but everyone arrived safely. The evening began with a cocktail hour, and then our dinners arrived. Our selections were stuffed shrimp, prime rib, or chicken valencia. The prime rib was the most popular selection and is what the Hawthorne is known for. A raffle took place after dinner; and at least half of those who attended the party won a prize thanks to the efforts of Mary Lebel, Nancy Hammond, and Barbara Wysocki. The nice array of prizes included restaurant gift certificates, a golf lesson, wine, golf goody bags, and a driving range pass, just to mention a few items. Nancy Hammond announced that Judy Biernat won the HASGA Award, and Mary Lebel talked about a golf weekend at the cape that is being planned for the last weekend in September, Our chapter will host the event and Central Mass and Albany will be invited. It was announced that Margaret Doyle will host a New Year's Eve party this year at her home in Middletown. Then we went to the lounge for dancing where a twopiece band was playing. Those who attended were Margaret Doyle, Shirley Monk, Linda Carillo, Joe Fasi, Barbara Metzen, Cathy Duncan, Shari Romano, Nancy Hammond, Mary Lebel, Dymtri Kolaczenko, Karen Skog, Sue Rand, Pat Rondinone and guest Peter Folta from the Central Mass chapter, Karen Young, Barbara Wysocki, Paul Figura, Jan Rusczyk, Marilyn Drew, Sherry Lowe, Maureen Viele, Bob Layman and guest, JoAnn Bryant, Patty Landry, Barbara Banville, and Ellen Gregory. Rules and More Rules Larry's ball landed in the rough adjacent to a tree line, which this time of year is covered with leaves. While helping Larry find his ball in the search through the leaves, Bob, one of the other members of the foursome inadvertently moved Larry s ball. Scott, a member of the foursome said, "That's a shame Bob, but no good deed goes unpunished, moving Larry s ball will cost you two strokes. Is this correct? What is the correct ruling? A. No penalty. The accidental movement of an opponents ball while helping him look for his ball results in no penalty. B. One stroke penalty, the rules know no mercy. Bob moved an opponents ball that was at rest, one stroke penalty. C. Two stoke penalty, the rules are even tougher than Scott thought. Bob moved an opponents ball that was at rest, two stroke penalty. Answer is. A. No penalty and the ball must be replaced. While searching for a player's ball, if an opponent, causes the ball to move, there is no penalty. If the ball is moved it must be replaced. The applicable rule is USGA rule 18-3 and Larry and I were playing golf on a course we had not previously played. We both mistakenly teed off on what we thought was the 5th hole. We immediately noticed that we were actually on the hole number 11. Is there a penalty for mistakenly teeing off on the wrong hole? What should we have done? A. No penalty. This is an honest mistake. Re-tee on the correct hole. B. One stroke penalty C. Two stroke penalty D. Finish playing the hole. Later play the correct hole. No penalty. What is the correct answer and why? The correct answer is C, a two stroke penalty. The penalty for teeing from anywhere outside the tee box is two strokes, under USGA Rule Clearly teeing from the wrong tee box is outside the tee box from which you should have teed off. After taking the penalty, you should re-tee on the correct hole (in this case hole #5). You will be hitting 3. Don t Let Your Membership Lapse... In October, chapters should have elected their chapter president for the 2010 calendar year beginning January 1. At the November meetings, chapters are suppose to elect their committee heads. All of this is according to your chapter bylaws ( If you have not elected your leaders for next year, please make sure you do it by the end of November. As soon as you have completed your elections, please inform the national office by submitting the new names to: A Time to Give a Little Thanks Thank you s are something we should and probably do hand out daily. At this time of the year, we do look back and can be very thankful for all of the folks who ve made this year a success. But special thankyou s go out to our chapter presidents. These are the folks on the front line who accept as volunteers the burden of anything headed their way. When someone else doesn t do their job, it s the chapter president who fills in. So take a little time this year to thank your president and other chapter leaders who ve made a difference.
