2 Hartford, CT Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association TM President Les McCoy (423) Golf Chairperson Dave Walstrom (203) Social Chairperson Linda Carillo & Patty Landry (860) (860) Communications Chairperson Martey Rhine (860) Membership Chairperson George Duffy (203) Newsletter Editor Les McCoy (423) Treasurer Diana Swenhall (860) Secretary Maureen Viele (860) Webmaster Diana Swenhall (860) Handicap JoAnn Bryant (860) Golf Update The 2012 golf schedule is posted on the new website Please check it out. It is in the box titled Chapter News & Activities. Pequabuck Golf Club was the venue for the June 23 rd A & B player handicapped best ball, C & D player shamble/scramble format. This was the 1 st time that we have attempted this style of play and the general reaction was very favorable. It gave the A & B players the chance to play their own ball from tee to green, but with the best ball format which made it less intimidating. This format also gave the C & D players the best drive option and from there they played a 2 person scramble to the hole, allowing them to often score better than the A & B players ( this would be my group, by the way, but I was my usual horrible self on this Saturday :-). We had 36 players for this event. 1 st place went to Peter Folta, Gene Allard, Cheryl Woodin, & Barbara Wysocki. 2 nd place was David Walstrom, Pat Rondinone, Joe Pacheco, & Barbara Metzen. We were able to award 3 rd place prizes due t the excellent turn out & they went to Joe Fasi, Nancy Hammond, Donna Ewen, & Fred Jackson. Closest to the pin contest for women was won by Beth Rotko & was won for men by Tim Vellrath. Special thanks to the Pequabuck for staying open so we could all sit & kibitz & enjoy the after-round festivities. Portland West was 4 th of July event and in celebration of the holiday we were all enticed by this; With special thanks to Cheryl Woodin for making the arrangements to bring this for us. Also of note was a special guest, Tammy Gavin, from the Philadelphia Chapter (pictured here with Hartford member Chris Spence). We were glad to have her as our guest and hope we didn t scare her too badly so that she returns to play with us in the future.

3 Outcome was; closest to pin women, Judy Biernat, scramble winners by matching card, Joe Pacheco, Marilyn Drew, Linda Woodruff and Pat dewolfe, Ladies Division #2, 2nd place Claudia Skarvinko and 1st place Diana Swenhall, Ladies Division #1, 2nd place Judy Biernat and 1st place Pat Sullivan, Men's Division #2, 2nd place Tim Vellrath and 1st place Rick Avery, Men's Division #1, 2nd place David Walstrom and 1st place Joe Fasi. No closest to the pin men winner. We all stink!!!!!!!!! Finally, we had our 1 st Las Vegas Manchester Country Club on July 14 th. The Las Vegas format means that every team was given one dice (one die, dye, big thing with dots on it) and after everyone on the team had teed off, a player would roll the die & the number determined which drive your had to use, (which teed them off even more). Numbers 1 thru 4 matched to players a, b, c, & d. Rolling a 5 meant you were allowed to choose the best drive, & a 6 meant you had to take the worst drive. Special note and thank you to Ed Brown shown here missing a putt, but with the rest of his group who finished 2nd. After playing in this his 1 st event, he then joined the ASGA. Welcome aboard Ed. So with 7 teams the phrase of the day was that dam dice seemed to roll exactly what you didn t want to happen. 1st place: Tim Vellrath, Judy Biernat, Diana Swenhall and Jean Cooper 2nd place: Ed Brown, Pat Rondinone and Tom Woods. Closest to Pin Men: Ed Brown Closest to Pin Women: No winner

4 Afterwards we were invited to Tom Woods s house for food, beverages & relaxation. Tom, thank you very much for offering your home as a place to meet & relax after a fun day of golf. A special thanks also to Cheryl Woodin, Tim Vellrath, Bill Reilly and Sandra Hackett for putting all the food together & David Walstrom for manning the grill. Great job by all of you. Now on to the next golf event!!!! Next scheduled event is a Hooky Tradition's Golf Course of Wallingford, on Thursday the 26 th. The format will be your choice: Play own ball or scramble. The cost is $47.00 including carts. The 1st tee time is 10:30 AM. You must sign up thru Diana Swenhall to play in this Hooky Day event. After that we have a tentative Ryder Cup Practice round scheduled for Cyprian Keyes ( on August 4 th with tee-times starting at 1:00 pm. There will be requests for players interested in going to this fabulous golf course & also this will be where the actual Ryder Cup will be played, so it gives us a chance to preview what we will be up against. Just need to be sure we have enough people interested. Watch for s about this shortly. And remember about the upcoming Ryder Cup matches are August 18 th at Cyprian Keyes. Central Mass is hosting this year & has begun their team selection. They are confident that they will have 8 teams, and are hoping for more. So we will be soliciting for players very shortly. Participation in the Ryder Cup is a difficult process. You need to commit to the cost (approximately $100), as well as time & travel for the event. Preference will also go to those members that have participated in our other events. But most importantly, we want to have players & teams that will enjoy the day, the people & have FUN. ~Davis Walstrom, Golf Chairman Membership Update First a change of venue is coming up: FRIDAY NIGHT GOLF... Friday the 13 th, was our last official gathering at the Apple Nine. Hopefully, being a Friday the 13 th didn t bother anyone s ability to score well. In the meantime, we have polled our members to see if they wish to return to Portland West or continue at the Apple Nine. The "ballot" was sent to all members. RE- SULTS OF THE VOTE WAS THAT WE WILL BE GOING BACK TO PORTLAND WEST FOR FRIDAY NIGHT GOLF starting July 20th. This will be very informal, so check our Meetup site & use it to leave info. NOW SOME REAL DRIVEL Pat Sullivan and George Duffy are off to Ireland on a 10 day golf trip on July we will play some famous courses including Old Head, Portmarnock, and Ballybunion. 62 or so ASGA members (Including several of our friends from Fairfield and Central Mass) will be in search of a pint or two along the way. MEMBERSHIP STUFF... Please send me interesting info about yourself or other members that we can share with the group. Stuff like; Harry Mackenstein is ski racer, and Pat dewolfe has a daughter is a ballerina, anything along these lines that you wish to share. Non-golf stuff... I came across a great website "Live from Daryl s House" (Hall of Hall and Oates) where he hosts various artists for jam sessions, great stuff, fun and free. Also Chicago and Doobie Brothers coming to Hartford in August at the Meadows. Send us your ideas for social events, Rick Avery submitted a great idea to go to a Connecticut winery for eating and wine tasting. That's it for now... send me some interesting drivel. AND WE STILL WANT TO SEE YOU MEMBERS WHO HAVEN'T BEEN VERY ACTIVE... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE come out and join us... we are having a great year. But if you come it will be even better. In the meantime get involved play, play, socialize, socialize and just enjoy each other. Bye for now... and be nice to each other. ~George Duffy, Membership Chairman Hartford ASGA Meetup site We are now on Meetup... check it out at; We are tracking Friday Night Portland West, so signup & put in what time you will arrive so you can join other members of our group. We are also using this for Sunday Afternoon Tunxis, thanks to Paul Silverio for keeping track of the players & making sure we have teetimes. Thanks to Ken Maher for the work he is doing to keep the information current. From the Editor Several things I still need to mention. June s Social Gathering was at Stanley s Whinstone Tavern on June 19 th. We had a Chipping Group Lesson 5:30, cost was $5 and with over 20 participants showing up. The Lesson helped to make for one of the biggest social gathering we have had. Ryan, the pro, who gave the lesson, is will to do a putting & green reading clinic in August if there is interest. Contact me if you are interested, so I can make the arrangements. Next Social Gathering is scheduled for August 21 st at Stanley, mark your calendars. HASGA CUP 2012 Update: through July 4th, the top ten point getters are as follows: Les McCoy = 62, Judy Biernat = 53, Nancy Hammond = 48, Diana Swenhall = 44, Joe Fasi = 43, Bill Reilly = 42, George Duffy = 41, Pat Sullivan = 41, David Walstrom = 39 & Cheryl Woodin = 39. Don t forget to let us know if you play on Fridays or Sundays and anytime you play with another Chapter. Just JoAnn Bryant at bryantjdb@comcast.net. Also, feel free to her if you want to check your own totals against what she has. If you have more events, she will be glad to adjust your score. Tracking Handicaps: Reminder, HASGA uses handicaps for team events in order to make the foursomes competitive with each other. Depending on who is playing, you may be designated as an A, B, C or D player for that day. Having a handicap is also a good way to measure your own progress. Only rounds where you play your own ball are used. You can give me actual score cards, copies of scorecards or you can me at (bryantjdb@comcast.net) with the information. Also check your status on our website, to make sure that your handicap is correct & that it can be accessed for updates. Pace of Play: be aware of the group behind you & clear the landing area quickly so they can hit their shots. Park

5 golf carts or pull carts on the exit side of the green to get out of the way quickly. Write down the score at the next tee box, not at the green. And remember they make golf balls every day. Chances are if you hit it so badly that it was hard to find, then when you hit it again it will try to get away even further into the woods, water or poison ivy underbrush. As always, a club is as good as its members, and the entire membership make the group what it is & contribute to the good times we have, and the emphasis is on FUN. ~mor or Les About Our Members Happy Birthday to these members: Carol DeBerry - 07/22 Linda Gamache - 07/19 Sandra Hackett - 08/01 Harriet Haslett - 07/25 Bernadette Jones - 07/02 William Reilly - 08/08 Christopher Spence - 07/28 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Dennis Franta - 07/31/2012 Linda Gamache - 07/31/2012 John Guandalini - 07/31/2012 Harriet Haslett - 07/31/2012 Sue Roy - 07/31/2012 Rules and More Rules Recreating ball lie in bunker Recently I played a shot into a bunker where my ball came to rest touching my partner's ball. Subsequently I marked my ball a club length away with a tee in the sand and allowed my partner to clear her ball out of the bunker first. Before replacing my ball and playing my shot, I raked the sand to flatten the surface. I placed my ball back on its original spot (not dropping it from shoulder height) and then hit my shot. I wonder whether in doing so I have improved my lie, as the sand was wet and hard until I raked it, which helped to loosen the sand and gave me an easier shot to handle. Did I breach any rules and would there be an appropriate way to resolve such a scenario? Answer When you lift a ball out of a bunker because it interferes with another golfer s play, and his shot subsequently alters your lie, you are required to re-create that lie as well as you can and place the ball in that lie [Rule 20-3b (iii)]. It would appear from your narrative that you improved your lie. The penalty for doing so is two strokes (loss of hole in match play). When it is clear that another player s shot is going to alter the lie of a ball you were asked to lift, you should make careful note of your lie and request that a fellow competitor or opponent observe your procedure. In your situation, you should have filled in the hole made by your partner s stroke, tamped it down to restore the hard surface, and placed your ball on the spot where it originally lay. If the two balls had not been in a bunker, then you would place your ball in a similar lie within a club-length and no closer to the hole. Logic should dictate that the Rules of Golf would not permit you to improve the lie of a ball that you were required to lift and replace. You should also know that this is a situation where you are not permitted to clean the ball. Lift and hold it carefully between two fingers and do not drop it into your pocket.
