2 Hartford, CT Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association TM President Betsy Schwartz Golf Co-Chairs Nancy Hammond Mary LeBel Membership Co-Chairs Tom Woods Patty Landry Communication Co-Chairs Cathy Duncan Jerry Maxwell Secretary Ellen Gregory Treasurer Jean Cooper Webmaster Rhonda Idleman Social Sue Rand Handicap Jerry Maxwell October General Meeting Once again we were blessed by nice weather for our General Meeting and the Putting Contest that preceded it. It was cool and crisp, just like the air on a mid- October evening should be. Not a drop of rain spoiled the scene. As the contest began the sun was starting to slide behind the horizon, but there was plenty of light left for putting a golf ball. The putting green was set-up with seven putting cups, so to have a ninehole contest; we played the seven holes and then played holes one and two a second time. It must have looked like we were having a good time as two civilians who'd come to the green for some practice asked if they could join us. And they did. It should be noted that Patty Landry did have a putt-in-one, and it came after she declared she was playing under protest because three of the cups were about one-third standard size. Patty says they were "baby cups." Linda Woodruff of the Fairfield Chapter rode into town with her putter and took first place and its prize, a fine bottle of Greg Norman Shiraz, home with her. Ouch! Harry, any chance we can recruit Linda for the 2011 Ryder Cup team? Ellen Gregory and Jerry Maxwell tied for second place, and Jerry won the one putt, putt-off. It's amazing how well Ellen putts wearing a winter coat. She also putts lights-out (Torza's miniature golf event) when wearing high heels. Think Nike would be interested in a new line of women's golfing apparel? The Whinstone had the front room set-up for us; and there was a lot of laughter and gayety as we ordered food and drink, and the contest's prizes were presented. Pat Sullivan received a table-top miniature putting green "putting game" - it came from the Christmas Tree Shop; need I say more? From getting the Friday Night Golf Championship trophy to a Christmas Tree Shop putting green "putting game", success is such a slippery slope, huh Pat. One day you're at the pinnacle and then.! Pat Sullivan, Harry Mackenstein, Jerry Maxwell, Ellen Gregory, Tina Muzzy, Linda Woodruff, Patty Landry, George Duffy, Mary LeBel and Dmytri Kolaczenko were putting contest participants. Unable to make the putting contest, but joining us for the General Meeting were Tom Woods, Barbara Wysocki, Bob Layman, and newcomers (and now members) Jim Seagrave, and Terry Mason. ~Jerry Maxwell Have Drinks - Food On The Way
3 Ryder Cup The Ryder Cup Tournament took place August 21st, at the Townsend Ridge golf course in Massachusetts. We were graciously greeted by our hosts, the Central Mass ASGA Chapter at the course. This was after most of us had a hardy breakfast at Rein's deli in Vernon. After breakfast we car-pooled-up and departed for Townsend, a two hour drive. Our team co-captain, Harry Mackenstein gave those at Rein's a post-breakfast pep talk and gave another pep talk to the entire HASGA team just before the individual teams headed to their assigned tees for the shot gun start. Before the competition started there was plenty of time for talking, planning strategy, practicing one's putting, and picture taking before the match's 1:00pm kickoff. Both chapters were lucky enough to have volunteer photographers accompany the teams (Sharon Viveiros for HASGA, and Bob MacDonough for Central Mass). It was a beautiful sunny day, as compared to last year's competition, which took place in brutal heat. Kim Tartarini, the Central Mass Ryder Cup team captain did a great job coordinating the event. After the competition there was a nice buffet dinner, and lots of raffle prizes were handed-out at a drawing held after the dinner. Although HASGA wasn't able to win the Ryder Cup trophy, the HASGA team put forth a valiant effort with team spirits high, and everyone enjoyed the event. Next year it's our turn to host the Ryder Cup competition here on Connecticut turf. We've already started doing some preliminary planning for the event, and we'll do our best to be sure that Central Mass leaves our state empty handed in HASGA members by team were; Nancy Hammond - Jim Roy, Margaret Doyle - Tom Woods, Judy Biernat - Dave Walstrom, Patty Landry - Harry Mackenstein, JoAnn Bryant - Chris Spence, Andrea Wilson - Jack Curtiss, Diana Swenhall - Russ Avery, Pat Sullivan - Les McCoy, Shari Romano - Joe Fasi, Mary LeBel - Dmytri Kolaczenko, Linda Carillo - Jerry Maxwell, Barbara Wysocki - Dave Swingle, Pat Rondinone - George Duffy. A sad note. Bob MacDonough, the photographer for Central Mass, passed on October 23, He'd suffered a heart at- tack and had been hospitalized for a number of weeks. HASGA has made a $50 donation to the Special Olympics in his name. ~Barbara Wysocki, Ryder Cup Team Co-Captain Friday Night Golf Championship The sky was cloudy, but the atmosphere wasn t. 22 players signed up to play golf at Portland west, on FNG Championship party night, September 10, 2010; and the cloudy skies didn t dampen the mood one whit. The couples group had ended their season the previous Friday, so both nines were open for us. Play the front was the consensus, so off we went in search of a Ryder Cup: The Team - (Photo - S. Viveiros) Two More Names For The Plaque good time and a good round. And for most of us a good round it was. The pond on number 6 ate a few balls as is the norm, but the course also gave up a lot of pars; maybe trying to lure us back for a few more FNG rounds before the wind, leaves, ice, and snow arrive. So we played the nine and tumbled into the warmth of the Portland West restaurant and bar. And there the mood was one of joviality; whether from the completed round of golf, the libations being consumed, the expectation of prizes to come, or the knowledge of free cake and coffee; well, that s an unanswered question. When people were pretty much finished eating, the cake and coffee bar was
4 opened; and Jerry Maxwell and Nancy Hammond took the floor to announce winners and hand out prizes. FNG Championship prize winners were: Friday Night Golf prize winners: Most rounds played - Linda Carillo; Harry Mackenstein Most improved golfer - JoAnn Bryant; Jack Curtiss Note: Harry Mackenstein received a Cart Cop award (see photo above) in recognition of his outstanding direction and management of players and carts to achieve "zero error" tee times at numerous HASGA golfing events! FNG Championship Tournament Prize Winners: 3rd place low gross - Margaret Doyle; Joe Fasi 3rd place low net - Debbie Macht; Jerry Maxwell 2nd place low gross - JoAnn Bryant; Jack Curtiss 2nd place low net - Margaret Doyle; Jack Curtiss 1st place low gross - Pat Sullivan; Jim Roy 1st place low net - Pat Sullivan; Jim Roy Attending were Susan Ammann, JoAnn Bryant, Jack Curtiss, Margaret Doyle, Joe Fasi, Nancy Hughes, Patty Landry, Debbie Macht, Harry Mackenstein, Merry Maxwell, Jan Rusczyk, Pat Sullivan, Maureen Viele, Sharon Viveiros, Tom Woods, Barbara Wysocki, Nancy Hammond, Les McCoy, Pat dewolfe, Marilyn Drew, Dave Swingle, and Karen Skog. Rolling Meadows Our last scheduled non-hooky day golf event took place October 9th at Rolling Meadows golf course in Ellington. It was a beautiful, crisp and sunny autumn day; and the views were spectacular. Being the event coordinator, I got there early as did Rhonda Idleman to sell mulligans. As an added treat players got a baggie of brownies if they bought mulligans; and Andrea Wilson also came with a bag of goodies. The two formats were play your own ball or scramble; and twenty-nine golfers signed-up for the event. Prizes were awarded to the foursome with the lowest team net score for play your own ball, and to the team with the lowest Trophies And Cake - Plenty Of Reason To Smile Ready To Scramble (L to R) Marilyn Drew, Pat dewolfe, Bill Reilly, Margaret Doyle, Martey Rhine, and Jerry Maxwell (other side of lens) gross score for the scramble format. The foursome of Mary LeBel, Dmytri Kolaczenko, Les McCoy and myself won the team low net score prize. It had to be the coaching we got from Les, because all day he kept saying, "hit it hard!" It's a wonder we finished at all as the day was filled with laughter. The team that won the low gross scramble score was Bill Reilly, Margaret Doyle, and Pat dewolfe. I got lucky and won the closest to the pin prize for ladies, and the closest to the pin prize for men was won by Brian Jefferies. He had an incredible shot that landed on the green nineteen inches from the cup. Outstanding!! The closest to the line prize was won by Andrea Wilson.
5 All of the players, who stayed for the post-round festivity, received a free raffle ticket, and lots of prizes were given out. It was a great closing event and was attended by Joe Fasi, Nancy Hammond, Andrea Wilson, Debbie Macht, Brian Jefferies, Pat Sullivan, Tom Woods, Peg Mechanic, Harry Mackenstein, Betsy Montgomery, Pete Matthews, Judy Biernat, Les McCoy, Mary LeBel, Dmytri Kolaczenko, Barbara Wysocki, Russ Avery, JoAnn Bryant, Sue Roy, Barbara Mertzon, Glenn Veer, Rhonda Idleman, Joe Pacheco, Bill Reilly, Margaret Doyle, Pat dewolfe, Jerry Maxwell, Marty Rhine, and Marilyn Drew. ~Barbara Wysocki Simsbury Farms Hooky Day The last Hooky Day event of HASGA's 2010 golfing season kicked-off about 10:30 in the morning, on the first tee at the beautiful Simsbury Farms golf course. The pricing was unique. Simsbury Farms was running an 18-holes of golf and cart special; so, it was $32 to play 18 and ride, or $32 to play 18 and walk. Just for the record; there were no walkers. That might have in fact been a bad thing, because, I think, only by walking the course could one truly appreciate the beauty of the autumn foliage. During the round Mary LeBel commented, "The colors in the sunlight are perfect, not that dull brownish color that we'll see in a few more days." The leaves were beautiful, and the greens were too; if, in fact you like hard, steeply-sloped, fast greens. All agreed, they were challenging. After the golf we stopped in the clubhouse for warmth and a bite to eat. Playing were; Chris Spence, Linda Carillo, Mary LeBel, John Guandalini, Dave Swingle, Bill Plawecki, Jack Curtiss, Andrea Wilson, Dmytri Kolaczenko, Bill Reilly, not in photo; Diana Swenhall, Sandra Hackett, and Jerry Maxwell. ~Jerry Maxwell Fall Foliage - Frog Rock - Food, Drink, Fellowship HASGA's Annual Holiday Party - Members & Non-Member Guests When: Saturday, December 4th, 2010 Time: 6:00pm to???
