1 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Hartford, CT Chapter - American Singles Golf Association May 2009 President s Letter for May Well, our golf kickoff Happy Hour was a rousing success!! We had more people than we had room on Friday, April 17 th at Saybrook Fish House, but somehow that lent to the feeling of camaraderie. Two new members joined on the spot, Joyce Hynes and Linda Carillo welcome!! Many other people decided we were so much fun that they signed up for the tournament AND became new members. All in all, a fun time was had by all. Of course, opening day, April 25 th at Westwoods, was picture perfect perfect weather and a perfect job by the hard working Golf Chair, George Duffy, and his Committee!! A standing ovation to them for the efficient way in which everyone got paired, the prizes awarded and all those cards marked!! Be sure to attend our May meeting at Sorrento On The Green at Rolling Greens Golf Club at Century Hills in Rocky Hill on Tuesday, May 19 th at 6 pm. Once again we will have free appetizers and a very special speaker, Tracy Indomenico, this year s Travelers Championship Chairman! Having volunteered at many of these PGA tournaments, I can tell you that it s lots of fun AND you get to see the players up close and personal. I strongly encourage everyone to look at our website frequently!! It will be most helpful in knowing what, where and when golf and/or other events are happening!! Golf Joke of the Month Two women were put together as partners in the club tournament and met on the putting green for the first time. After introductions, the first golfer asked, "What s your handicap?" "Oh, I m a scratch golfer," the other replied. "Really!" exclaimed the first woman, suitably impressed that she was paired up with her. The other woman replied "Yes, I write down all my good scores and scratch out the bad ones!" ~Betsy Schwartz, Hartford ASGA President Hartford ASGA Monthly Member Meeting MAY 19, :00 p.m. SORRENTO ON THE GREEN 600 Cold Spring Road, Rocky Hill (860) Check out our new venue for the monthly meetings at Sorrento On The Green, located at Rolling Greens Golf Club in Century Hills! Norma asked Barbara if they should even try to beat that shot and Barbara said emphatically YES! Barbara proceeded to hit her ball onto the green further than Dave s ball went! On #16, Norma, Margaret or Barbara had the opportunity to put the ball in the cup and get a score of 0! All three missed, however Barbara came through with the next shot for a net 1. It is HASGA CUP time again! For the newcomers, the HASGA CUP is our version of the PGA s FedEx CUP. Points are awarded to all current Hartford ASGA members for participation in ALL golf events. Extra points are given if you win or are on a team that wins an event. We even give points for closest to the pin, longest drive, closest to the line, hole in one whatever the special shot is! This will be our third year giving out this prestigious award! JoAnn Bryant was the first winner and last year George Duffy won it. Their names were engraved on the club trophy AND each received greens fees to a Hartford ASGA event of their choice the following year! All ASGA golf events, both local and in other states, qualify for award points. I will keep track of points, and have access to who has played in our big events. However, if you play in out-of-state event, you need to let me know so that you are given credit for your participation! This is a fun contest that is not totally based on skill! The more you play, the more points you are given and the better the chance to win GOOD LUCK!! ~Nancy Hammond, HASGA Coordinator Membership Committee Report Our recruiting efforts have paid off with a record number of new members! We put an ad in The Hartford Courant on Easter Sunday along with the Rare Reminder for the April 17 th Open House, the yellow flyer distribution to golf courses and area businesses, and the weekly free ad in the Rare Reminder has also helped get the word out! We also have an ad currently in the CT Contacts newsletter and brochures will be at all their singles dances held in May and June, along with the ad in their website, A big thank you goes out to everyone for their help and support, however we cannot stop here! I am suggesting that everyone take some brochures and put them in your golf bag, so when you meet someone who is single and plays golf, you can give them the information. Tom Woods, Membership Co-Chair, will have them available at the May 19 th Monthly Member Meeting. A big welcome goes out from Hartford ASGA to our new members! ~Barbara Wysocki, Membership Co-Chair Golf Committee Report Golf season is well underway with some great action coming up! Remember we are at Tunxis Plantation Country Club in Farmington for Friday Night Golf (FNG) and Portland West Golf Club for Sunday Night Golf (SNG). You don't need to register online for FNG or SNG, but major monthly events do require registration online. Some major events coming up are a Sunday Golf Outing on May 17 th at Topstone Golf Course in South Windsor. Then our Memorial Day event on Monday, May 25 th at Hawk's Landing in Southington. The major event for June is on the 13th at Simsbury Farms! We will soon be announcing the location and date for the 2 nd Play Hooky Day in June! This is another event that doesn t require a reservation just show up and pay at the golf course where someone from the Golf Committee will take the payments. So get your summer schedule lined up and register for some or all of these fun events! The Golf Committee always welcomes input for tournament formats that you would like us to play, so chime in with your suggestions! Hats off to the Membership Committee, who are bringing in lots of new members all handsome guys and gorgeous ladies! We are also delighted to see some previous members coming back to be with us again! A word or two about our 2nd annual Reunion Tournament slated for July 18th at Tunxis Plantation... at this event we invite back all former members, who we are able to locate! Last year we had a great turnout and saw some of our former members, who were a big part of the early success of the Hartford Chapter of ASGA. We ask that anyone, who has an address...or home address or phone number of any former member, please let the Golf Committee know, so we can extend an invitation! I think we should call this the Annual Nancy Hammond Reunion Classic, because she had the idea as President last year Nancy is so bright! So get to the driving range, practice your golf game and come out and enjoy playing golf with Hartford ASGA..And if you decide not to practice...we still want you along with us! ~George Duffy, Golf Committee Chairman
5 HANDICAPS In golf, "handicap" is a common term; but with the USGA handicapping system, we actually have a Handicap Index and a Course Handicap. Your Handicap Index is computed by the handicapping system used by your golf group. The handicapping system uses the best 10 of the last 20 scores that you turned in, to calculate your handicap index. USGA approved handicapping systems require a minimum of 5 scores to calculate a handicap index. A handicap index will frequently be a decimal number: 7.4, 19.6, 28.1, 39.2, etc. A Course Handicap is determined by; using your handicap index with a Course Handicap Chart, or Course Handicap Calculator (you must know the slope of the tees you'll be playing), or doing the calculation manually using the following formula: Handicap Index multiplied by Slope Rating of the tees you'll play, divided by the Standard Slope Rating (113) = Answer. Round the Answer to the nearest whole number; 4 or less rounds down and 5 or more rounds up, and the result is the Course Handicap. ~Jerry Maxwell, Handicap Chairman About Our Members Happy Birthday to these members: John Czepiel - 06/01 Marilyn Drew - 05/25 Chris Kennedy - 06/06 Steven Lynch - 05/14 Cathy Morway - 06/09 Martey Rhine - 05/16 Bob Richards - 05/03 David Walstrom - 06/04 These members are up for renewal: (date shown is last day of membership) Jean Cooper - 05/31/2009 Carol DeBerry - 05/31/2009 Mary LeBel - 05/31/2009 Norma Spring - 05/31/2009 Welcome newest members: Richard Bowers - Joined 04/22/2009 Linda Carillo - Joined 04/24/2009 Emil Demikat - Joined 04/22/2009 Joe Fasi - Joined 04/28/2009 Joyce Hynes - Joined 04/24/2009 Dmytri Kolaczenko - Joined 03/26/2009 Cathy Morway - Joined 04/03/2009 Bob Richards - Joined 04/08/2009 Shari Romano - Joined 04/01/2009 Charles Thomas - Joined 04/20/2009 These members recently renewed: Steven Buckley Margaret Doyle Richard Lee Kathleen O'Sullivan Patricia Rondinone Chris Spence Judy Unsworth Elizabeth Washington HARTFORD ASGA 2009 GOLF SCHEDULE SUN. 6 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION MAY, 2009 Event Dates: May 22-25, 2009 A Great Weekend Planned at Homestead Resort And We re Looking for a Few Good Men We cannot complain, we re living the lives of professional golfers, touring beautiful cities and playing courses only the rich and famous could afford to play then we wake up...oh, we re back to dreaming again Homestead Resort... is this a dream or a reality? It s totally up to you. You can hang with your friends this Memorial Day Weekend or you can make new ones at one of our nation s premier resorts. Countless U.S. Presidents have visited this historic venue in the rolling hills of Virginia and countless ASGA Chapter Presidents have teed-off there as well. Why Homestead? It s convenient to our membership base to the extent that probably 50% of our membership can drive there but most importantly, we feel home there. It s just our kind of place. Are you man enough to attend? It seems we ve got ourselves into a bit of a predicament. We know women love these spa resorts but when do we SCREAM out loud and tell the MEN to sign-up as well? Women tend to register in pairs and the men register alone. But we re definitely seeing a shortage of men for this event. So men, we ask the question again: Are you man enough to attend? If you joined this organization to play golf, okay, we ve taken care of that. If it was to meet women and you haven t done it yet, what are you waiting for? We don t roll out the red carpet, that s why we re at the Homestead. You ve got to take it upon yourself and stop second guessing yourself in front of life s mirror. Pick-up the phone, give us a call. Register now before another woman registers! We can t tell the women they can t register any longer simply because they re a woman (we like staying out of jail!). So guys, tell your friends, tell your father and your son. We need more men to attend this event. Said enough? BTW, details at SinglesGolf.com/homestead. Details on the registration form enclosed with this newsletter. Other Upcoming Multi-Chapter Golf Weekends Can t make it to the Homestead this May? Here s a list of other upcoming events... Save the dates: December 29, January 1, Got a Friend Who d Like to Start an ASGA Chapter? You are who you are and where you are in life because of ASGA. Well, probably not. But you do have to realize ASGA s been good for you. Why else would you join and have fun with the fellas on the fairways? So if you like ASGA so much, can you help us grow a little? We d like to start some new chapters. Know a business associate or friend or relative in another city where we re not (see List of Chapters link on our homepage at SinglesGolf.com)? If they re successful in getting at least 20 members signed-up, we ll pay for your registration fee at any upcoming ASGA multichapter event! Let us hear from you! - Tom Alsop, President / Founder American Singles Golf Association (GolfASGA@aol.com)
