1 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA The Villages Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - September 2009 Message From President I am catching up on the happenings and trying to meet the new members that have come into our group since the first of July. I was disappointed that only a couple of the new members were at the meeting on August 11 th. I ll keep trying. The Tuesday Nine and Dine event is thriving. I understand this week s expected turnout is again very high. Hope to see you there. Please help me welcome new members and guests at this event. We do not try to establish groups ahead of time due to the chaos that is caused when an expected participant does not show. However, this leaves new members and guests needing to find a partner from a group of people they do not know. Please try to team-up with a new member or guest, so they are not left out. It is important that these people have a good experience at this event. Please help them get that. The semi-weekly executive golf event has not been well attended this summer, amid complaints that members have re- quested to be included but are not put in. Let me explain how this works so everyone can operate in a way that lets them be included. Marge enters names into the Tee Time system, 7 days before the event so she can get everyone together. She can only put in the names of people she has on that date. She cannot go back two days later and add a single position. It s too late!!!!! Additionally, it is best to send her an so she has a written record of your request and she is not overwhelmed by phone messages. If you do not have access to , then you must phone her. If you have requested to be included in this event and are not successful, please let me know by sending me a copy of your and explaining that you did not get included. If we have a problem here we need to fix it. We will be looking for a few good people to keep this group working well in We re taking inventory of positions we need to fill and it would be helpful to know who those members are that will help us do that. Please let me, or any Board member, know if you care enough about this group to make sure it remains active and fun. We can t all be the takers without being a giver, and I guarantee that you ll get more fulfillments from your membership if you participate in keeping it active and viable. My thanks to the volunteers that are helping the committees, to lighten the load. If you d like to help, please let any board member know. The board members and upcoming events are included on our web site golf.com. Special thanks to Dick Gaskill who took over for Bob to run the Harbor Hills event. We need more help like this. Don t worry that you aren t capable of doing it. It s almost as easy as falling off a log, and Bob is a great teacher. This is not a job to be left to the men. As of today, August 18 th, we have 137 members. So far in 2009, we have welcomed 46 new members, 11 since July 1 st, and had 31 members, 6 since July 1 st, let their memberships expire. As you can see, new members are our lifeblood, to keep the club from getting smaller and making it more difficult to arrange events. Please help me welcome all new members and guests, and help them enjoy their membership, by being a friend at meetings and these events. Upcoming Events Include: Myrtle Beach in November - Details in newsletter & at Singles- Golf.com/BattleAtTheBeach New Year's at ChampionsGate, Florida. Dec. 29-Jan. 1 - Details at SinglesGolf.com/newyears We're Going to Scotland - August, Details at Singles- Golf.com/scotland National Website: ASGANational@aol.com Office Hours: 8:00am to 4:00pm, M-F (Eastern) National Office: or GOLFMATE Regular Meeting Date: Second Tuesday of the Month Next Meeting: September 8th, No Meeting, instead we will be playing Nite Golf at the Saddlebrook Executive Golf Course Meeting Location: Saddlebrook Executive Golf Course Our Website: (See next page for list of officers and board members.) 2 The Villages Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association President Larry Arps TM Golf Chairperson Bob Miotke Communications Chairperson Pat Songer Social Chairman Linda Ooms Membership Chairman June Bouffard Secretary Carolyn Reichel Treasurer Myra Crosby Please use a paper name tag located at the back table in the meeting room if you have elected not to order a permanent one. It is very useful for all our members to see your name. It makes it much easier to remember. I ve noticed some of our members wearing name tags at golf events. What a great idea. Call Judy Lander if you would like to order a permanent name tag. ~Larry Arps General Membership Meeting Tuesday, August 11, 2009 The group enjoyed an Italian meal including baked ziti, meatballs, bread and salad provided by Pauli s Pizza. Leftovers were donated to the Wildwood Soup Kitchen who is always appreciative of donations from the community. The meeting was called to order by the President, Larry Arps, at 6:20 PM. New members and guests were introduced and welcomed. Mona Rubenstein, past president, reminded the group that members and guests can still sign up for the Daytona Beach golf week-end, September Other event listings were available on the sign-up table for member s signatures. The limit of 36 golfers was met for the September general membership meeting which will be held at Saddlebrook Executive Course. Lucky golfers will play night golf at dusk, after a box dinner at 6:00 PM. Those signed up who have not paid are reminded to mail your $15.00 for dinner and prizes to Linda Ooms. Bob Callings spoke to the group about the USGA Women s Mid-Amateur Championship to be held at the Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala, Florida in October. Bob provided interested volunteers with applications with the promise of a free round of golf at Golden Hills if you volunteer for two sessions. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:05 PM. The evening continued with Mexican Train Dominoes. Those arriving with this unique skill formed into groups to play, while others were enlightened with lessons prior to assembling into groups. Respectfully Submitted, ~Carolyn Reichel Meet And Greet We would like everyone to have name tags on, as some of us can't remember everyone's name. It also helps the new members to identify with the previous members sooner. For newcomers without tags yet we have some temporary ones on the back table. For more permanent name tags these can be ordered from Judy Lander for $7.00. She is at the front table checking in members who have paid for their dinner. The following members have ordered name tags (which Judy paid the printer in advance) and have not picked them up as yet: Mary Anne Courter, Joe DeMil, Mary Anne Kerr, Jackie Lewis, Mary Lewis, Trish Miler, Sarah Mistic, Wally Mitchell, Barbara Page, Bruce Pahaly, Carol Secton, and Lorraine Sulkows. SO please bring your $7.00 to the next meeting and pick up your name tags. Thank you. ~June Bouffard, Membership Chair Upcoming Golf Events As August ends we will look forward to a very active last few months of the year. September will hopefully begin to moderate in temperatures and allow us to be more comfortable as we pursue our games of golf. Here is what we have planned for you for the next couple of months. Executive Golf outings currently scheduled for September are for the 23 rd and the 30 th. For the month of October events are scheduled for the 14 th and 29 th. For any of the above dates get your requests into Margie Margo via at dmmargo@ embarqmail.com. By the way, Margie has been making much progress since her operation and expects to be at our September meeting. September 8 will be our Midnight Golf outing. All 36 slots have been filled but if you are interested in the event someone cannot make it please send an to Linda Ooms at myyanks46@aol.com. Hopefully, the weather will be good and the night a very dark one! Cheryl Pignoli has reported that the win-

3 ners of the Couples Scramble for July, although 3 groups tied at 1 under par 26 and required a card match off, were Greta Fadden, Heath Reeves, Peg Remy, and yours truly. Any questions on this can be directed to Cheryl at mcpignoli@ comcast.net. On the championship course outing at Harbor Hills, which Dick Gaskill ran for the club and did a great job, the team composed of Linda Ooms, Myra (5 iron) Crosby, Arne Rotne, and Howard Patrick were the overall winners of the first place prizes. Second place went to Barb Richardson, Michael Sandler, Ellen Scott, and Dick Gaskill. There was an additional award, and we won t publish for what position, that went to Carol Sexton, Cathy Crouch, Molly Sielatycki, and Barbara Bonney. Congratulations to all of you. Coming up in September and October are outings on September 5 at the Country Club of Mt. Dora starting at 11:00AM (this is a change from earlier publication) that will cost $27.00 and includes prize money. Those interested can register with Bob at his address shown below. September 19 will see us visiting Cane Gardens here in the villages. Based on how many we register, the course has committed to sending us off on all three courses so we can finish closer together and then enjoy some food and drink. Again, anyone interested in this outing should Bob at the address shown below and make sure to include your village id# in that . Mark you calendars for an October 10 th outing at Spruce Creek that will start at 8:30AM modified shotgun. The cost for this outing will be published at a later date but the course cost to us will not exceed $22.00 and may go as low as $ If you are interested in this outing send your request to Bob at the address published below. Last event for October, and we ll talk about whether we should go as witches and warlocks, will be at Eagle Ridge (Del Webb) on the 24th. We will have a 9:00AM shotgun start and the total cost, including prize money, will be $ If you are interested in this outing send your request to Bob at the address listed below. All championship outing requests should be sent to Bob at rmiotke04@comast.net, and checks made out to ASGA mailed to Bob Miotke, 1439 Crestwood Lane, The Villages, Fl Nine and Dine. We have had really fine attendance at all of these outings but would love to see some more join us for golf, drinks, food and some dancing. Contact Molly Sielatycki to register for any of these regular Tuesday outings (which have been starting a bit earlier this year, and the most recent outing before 3:00PM tee offs!), her is msielatycki@yahoo.com The cost for the golfing is $8.50. ~Bob Miotke, Golf Committee Social & Upcoming Meeting September 8, 2009 At our August meeting we played Mexican Train Dominoes. Those that were familiar with the game formed their own groups and played their way through an abbreviated game. From the sounds coming from their tables they were really getting into it. Those that had never played were given a quick lesson by Loretta Cantwell, Jane Smith and I. They learned their lessons well and played a fun game of dominoes. Many thanks to Loretta and Jane for all their help. Also on the schedule was Bob Callings who spoke briefly to the group about the upcoming USGA Women s Mid-Amateur Championship to be held at the Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala in October. They re looking for volunteers to help with this event. He gave an overview of the volunteer opportunities available and passed out applications for the positions. There seemed to be a lot of interest in the event and hopefully we can provide some assistance. If you volunteer for two sessions you ll get a free round of golf at Golden Hills. There s incentive for you!!!!! Dinner was catered by Pauly s Pizza. The meal was Baked Ziti, Meatballs, Garlic Knots, Salad and dressings. Everyone chowed down and there was still plenty left over. The leftovers were donated to the Wildwood Soup Kitchen which was very thankful for the donation. Our September meeting is being replaced by Nite Golf at the Saddlebrook Executive Golf Course. The event was limited to the first 36 golfers who signed up due to the shot-gun format. The cost is $15.00 which includes the Nite Golf equipment, box dinner and prize money. The event is full with several golfers on the alternate list. It should be a really FUN evening!!!!! UPCOMING EVENTS SEPTEMBER Nite Time Golf at Saddlebrook Executive Course OCTOBER Game Night (assorted card, dice and board games TBD) NOVEMBER BINGO Night DECEMBER Annual ASGA Christmas Party **** As always, please feel free to provide feedback (positive or negative) on our meeting activities and meals and suggestions for future activities and meals as well. Rules and More Rules Larry's ball landed in the sand hazard next to green number 7. His ball came to rest within inches of a pine cone that was in the bunker. Before chipping his ball from the hazard, and so as not to be distracted, Larry picked up the pine cone and tossed it under the adjacent pine tree. What penalty, if any, does Larry incur? A. No penalty B. One stroke penalty C. Two stroke penalty D. No penalty, but Larry must return pine cone to bunker and replay his ball The correct answer is C, Two stroke penalty. The more exact answer is two-stroke penalty in stoke play and loss of hole in match play. When both a loose impediment and a golf ball lie in the same sand hazard, the loose impediment may not be removed before playing the ball. (USGA Rule 13-4c applies) Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY AC- COUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

6 CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION SEPTEMBER 2009 In a matter of a few weeks, over 70 people have registered for the Battle at the Beach so far, which will be held at the Marriott Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, SC. This hotel is a AAA Four- Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. Date: November Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf (including cart with GPS & range balls), enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and Friday night s themed Cheeseburgers in Paradise, where the best dressed parrothead will get $100. So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/ BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register for the event over the phone, call us at or toll free at GOLFMATE. Scotland Was Great One of the tough aspects of this job is having to check-out places for future events. Anyone who knows me knows that we would never head to a certain locale without the place being thoroughly vetted. So in mid-august, I got my first opportunity to visit St. Andrews, Scotland and a variety of venues. It s amazing to think before you go that you are going to do x and upon departure from their country, you ve ruled-out x and start planning for y. Then, a week later, you re looking at z. I know that ultimately, going to Scotland is one of life s great experiences and my purpose for going there was to find out what we needed to provide to you that would be over and above your expectation. I also realize that the better the value, the more we ll have in attendance. Playing the Old Course: We ve all thought about going there and the feeling we d have playing the Old Course, you know, coming in on the eighteenth hole and tens of thousands cheering us on. You could play at midnight and have the same feeling. I had a last moment opportunity to play the Old Course only because it was at 5:30pm. We d probably not finish but at least you could say you ve been there, said Charles Head, the Fairmont General Manager, who managed to get us on. I can t remember the last time I walked a golf course. But it didn t matter if I had to walk, ride a mule or whatever; nothing was going to keep me from playing. This place speaks to you. You step-out on the first tee box and you feel the history, you feel the ground almost talking to you. You feel the presence of all the greats who have preceded you. On every hole, something big has happened at some point in time in history. My only regret was in not reading everything I could about past championships, memorizing those relevant events in my head and re-living them as I played the course. I ll know next time. A large, 61% of you, in our Scotland survey, said that if you went to Scotland, playing the Old Course would be a must play. It s 100% impossible for a group our size (projected to be players based on the survey) to play it, so playing the Old Course will be something you ll have to handle on your own (see Singles- Golf.com/scotland for annual or daily-ballot information). But in the meantime, we re lining-up some great courses, some courses you ll be happy to tell your friends, kids and grandkids about. This will simply be a great trip and you ll meet friends you never thought you had. Details forthcoming. We promise you ll be impressed with the venue and price. When the final package is completed, we ll you and post to SinglesGolf.com/scotland. So... stay tuned! New Year s Will Be at the Omni / Orlando! Go to SinglesGolf.com/newyears for details of this event. We re very happy to return to the Omni at ChampionsGate! - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone or GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com -
