1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA The Villages Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - April 2011 Aim to the left as the ball will have a tendency to go right for right handed golfers Message From The President Hard to believe April is already here. With that brings good and bad news. First, the good news. We are over the cold weather and the golf courses are looking great. As we move into spring, we will be coming back on Campus for more golf events. In May we are moving 9 & Dine back to Hacienda Hills Country club. We are also having The Masters party there as you will see later in the bulletin. If you haven t signed up already, do so soon. Space is limited!! We will also continue all of the other regular golfing events that offer so many opportunities and options for everyone to enjoy. The Happy Hour outing at Mallory Country Club has been very well received and I hope to see more of you there. The bad news is that so many of our good friends and golfing partners, who live here seasonally will soon be leaving. We have enjoyed your participation and will await your return whenever you get back. Please travel safely and stay in touch. We will miss you. Now, let s talk about golf, which is why we all belong to this great Association to begin with. Golf is played on several different plains. One is in the air (drives, approach shots, etc.). One is played on the ground (putting). However, the major part of the game is played within the 5 to 6 inches between the ears. That is the hard part about the game. Just ask any professional on the tour. OK, so where am I going with this? We are a large group at any golf outing we play. What I would ask is that all of us think about our next shot ahead of time. If waiting for someone to hit, plan what you are going to do while they are hitting. Don t interfere with their shot but don t wait until they hit to plan what you are going to do. If we all do that, it will speed up the pace of place greatly. If we all can decrease our shot time by 10 seconds that is forty seconds per hole for each group. Now multiply that by 18 holes of golf and about golfers. You get my point. Hope to see you all on the course soon. Now, let s go play golf and have fun. ~Lee Banister General Membership Meeting Minutes - March 8, 2011 March meeting was a social event no meeting was held. ~Marilyn Wright, Secretary Happy Hour A bright clear sunny day brought out thirty club members to our March Happy Hour on Mallory patio. Swing dancing, line dancing, and the electric slide challenged the best skills of our members that enjoyed the afternoon. We have been fortunate to enjoy Terri Torres' music that offered a variety of songs and we plan to be there next month. Let's hope the clear weather follows us in April! ~Happy Hour Coordinator, Barbara Bonney Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Wilmington's Beach Blast - Dates: April 1-3, Details at Memorial Day Weekend Reunion - See attached flyer. The grass has finally turned green and the flowers are blooming. And with that, our chapter is blooming also. As of now we have 205 members. Our newest members are Linda Letendre, Christina Miller, Steve Windle, R. James Brown, Anne Bloete, Diana Carter and Judi Corcoran. Now that we are growing, it is becoming harder to get to know some of our newer members. Do you remember when you first came to an ASGA function? Was it a little daunting? Was it a little confusing? I would like to ask each of you to reach out to our newer members and introduce them to others at any event. Reach out and help them understand some of the workings in our chapter, whether it is how the executive golf is managed or how to sign up for any event or why 9 & Dine is not always held in the Villages. And, to our newer members please, if you have any questions come up and ask. I know that any and every board member or chairperson would be happy to answer all you questions. Also, remember, I am only as far away as your computer or phone. Contact me at:casexton954@ gmail.com or Leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. See you on the golf course. Life is Good! Golf with a Smile. ~Carol Ann Sexton, Membership Chairperson Sunshine Person Eileen Batchelor is our Sunshine Person. If you have golf clubs, bags, balls or any golf equipment to donate, please bring them to Fort Knox Storage (across 441/27 from Lowe's) any day between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Upcoming Golf Events As many may have noted I have been altering the types of competitions we play on the championship courses. I hope those who have played will share their comments on what you have enjoyed as well as anything you might not have enjoyed. There were several motivations in my changing things periodically. First, to give us a fresh look and feel for the competition. Secondly, I have also tried to move the group along in pace of play. This is essential, especially at the peak period of the season, so that the courses can serve as many golfers as possible. That is why we have tried the two putt rule in both shambles or scrambles (where you really only putt once and then pick up and move to the next hole), as well as the step aside golfing that allows everyone to tee off and then plays to complete the hole with only three players hitting (the one who has had their shot taken to play from effectively steps aside and does not play the next shot). Both of these have seemed to move us along a bit faster and I thank you for your response on this. Keep in mind as you play in any of our outings, or any other rounds of golf that you might play, that for every minute you manage to lose on a hole, or holes, that can add up to nearly 20 minutes per round and in all probability will not be made up and elongates everyone s playing time for a round of golf. Enough on that. If you have any suggestions for us to try I would much appreciate hearing from you? As well, I am still looking for items to place in the monthly newsletter about individual accomplishments or funny things that may have happened during a round of golf. Here is what has been happening as well as what will be happening over the coming months DOUBLES TEAM SCRAMBLE February results are in and the team composed of Barb Sobel, Jim Preston, Molly Sielatycki, and Dick Skinner came in with a very fine score of 24, four under par. There were three teams tying for second place and splitting the prize money. These were Dave Lewis, Jean Pridemore, Eddie Manson, and Midge Maddison,

3 GayMarie Odden, Pat Greene, Barb Bonney, Jack Parker, Carolyn Reichel, Gene Ricca, Hazel Caswell, and Bob Miotke. These three teams finished with a respectable 2 under par. Congratulations to you all. Just a reminder, that those playing each month should turn in your results via to Larry Arps at laarps@gmail.com and hold onto your score cards until the winners have been announced for the month. Card verification maybe necessary and you will be contacted as needed. NINE AND DINE For the month of April we will publish the web site for this outing along with cost and the time we must start. By and large, the tee times will fall between 1 and 1:30 and Molly will publish foursomes for the day. To allow more than 32 golfers it is necessary to submit our list 5 days in advance. The result is that you must sign up no later than the 6 th day before the event. And as a reminder, for the Nine and Dine you will pay at the pro shop each week. Starting in May, the first Tuesday, we will be switching our outing to every week except the Tuesday we hold our monthly club meeting. This will be at the Hacienda Hills Course and will start somewhere between 3:30 and 4:00 pm. You will register and pay at the pro shop. You will form your own foursomes and play whatever format you desire on the outing. We will finish and eat and drink at the Hacienda Restaurant. They will be expecting our group and have kept a space separate for us to dine together. You will be signing up on a published web site which will take entries until Monday noon. Any questions on Nine and Dine should be directed to Molly Sielatycki at msielatycki@yahoo.com. 18 HOLE CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE EVENTS for 2011 The March 12 outing at Summer Glen saw 56 players participate in the scramble. The day was great as was the golf. First place went to the team of Mary Burtchell, Hazel Caswell, Arne Rotne, and Bob Miotke with a net score of 55. Coming in second was the team composed of Vickie Langkam, GayMarie Odden, Linda Letrende, and an ASGA visitor from Nashville, Gary Carson. They finished with a very fine net of 56. Three teams tied for third and the winning captain who drew high card for third place was Tom Anzalone, Carol Stewart, Linnea Urben, and Harry Lewis. Closest to the pin winners were Bill Breadon, Jerry Vogel, Molly Sielatycki, and Carole Mosbaugh. Congratulations to all the winners as well as all those who participated in a fun day. March 26 saw another 56 players attending the Eagle Ridge outing. This was the first time we tried a scramble with a step aside, that being whoever had their shot taken could not take the next shot. This proved interesting and allowed us to finish the round in about Treasurer's Summary Report - February 2011 ~Myra Crosby, Treasurer

4 4:15, which is fast for our group. Congratulations to everyone who played and moved along in an organized and rapid manner. Awards were made for closest to the pin for Jerry Vogel, Bill Breadon, Lydia Merriweather, and Hazel Caswell. First place in the team event went to the team composed of Becky Jones, Rick Lorton, Hazel Caswell and myself with a team net of 58 which was tied by Jerry Vogel s team but lost in a draw. Jerry s team was composed of Pam Schau, Barb McHenry, and Carrie Croswell. Third place was a tie with the draw going to Tom Anzalone, Lucy Kelly, John Kuyper, and Carol Sexton with a net score of 59. Bill Breadon s team shot the same score but ended up 4 th with the draw. Bill s team was composed of Barb Morin, Myra Crosby, and Jerome Duguay. Congratulations to everyone on the great scoring and we will try this again in the near future. Hawaii Trip Was Fun, Relaxing Our group had not been to Hawaii in a couple of years and it was time for us to go. Twenty-eight of us ventured to Maui-land for seven days of fun, fellowship and beautiful fairways. We played the Wailea courses located near the Fairmont Hotel. Generally, the weather cooperated and so did the seven men who accompanied the 21 women. (Hey, we had a man in each foursome, who can complain?) Kay Reisz had a two-inch closest-to-pin. It was, without a doubt, the shot of the week. Members snorkeled, rode bikes down the side of the volcano, went whale hunting, oops, I m sorry, whale watching, a authentic luau and did many other things to make their daze. As our wheels left the runway, the seven-foot tsunami hit the island. Everyone made it back home safely. We ll head back to Hawaii, most likely in February, 2013, so start saving those beads! Newsletters - - Did You Get Yours? In the January and February issues of ASGA National, we indicated we were going green. New members joining ASGA who have addresses on file with us will automatically receive their newsletter in electronic form (e-newsletter). You will get an with a link to your just-released newsletter from your chapter. Existing members, up through March 31, 2011, will also receive the e- newsletter unless they opt for a printed version of the newsletter. The printed version contains a roster but shows up at your door 5-7 days later. For more details on this policy, please visit SinglesGolf.com/ newsletters. Ever Been to Ireland? We re looking at bringing a group to Ireland in the Summer of Have you been there? The internet is loaded with places to play and see, however, we want your take on what you think would work well for the group. Contact us and we ll be sure to investigate. We hope to have an announcement within the next couple of months. Tom Alsop, President / Founder GolfASGA@aol.com
