1 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA The Villages Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - August 2011 The harder the sand, the slower the swing Message From The President Is it warm enough for everyone? It seems like the temperatures from the West, Mid West through the Southeast are hitting record highs right now. This makes it essential that all of us who are out on the links be prepared for the heat/humidity. Drink lots of fluids (nonalcoholic, non-caffeinated) frequently. Start frontloading those fluids before you get to the course, make good use of the ambassadors cart and the frequent water stations that are available and assess how you feel frequently. Also, keep an eye on your playing partners. If you or someone in your group is not feeling well, STOP playing and get to a cool environment. As much as we all love the game of golf, there is no match worth putting yourself at risk for heat injury. In spite of the heat, we still have a number of golf and social events scheduled for the rest of summer. Orange County National is just around the corner and sign-up for the Daytona trip is brisk. In addition to those two out-of-town events we also have our usual Executive golf, Nine and Dine, Priority and 18 Hole events. I encourage you all to participate in as many events as possible but also know your limitations with the heat. This month s General Membership Meeting is going to be a little bit different. We are not really going to have a meeting, just a good old summer cookout with all the fixins. It will still be at Hibiscus Recreation Center and outdoor games will be available. Indoor seating will also be available for those who want to get out of the heat, or rain, if that s the case. Come out and enjoy old friends and meet new members. Finally, we have heard concerns from several members not receiving the ASGA Bulletin. The National ASGA office initiated a policy where if you want a hard copy of the bulletin you must go to the web site and select that option otherwise you only get an online bulletin. I have asked the National office to reverse that option, where you get a hardcopy unless you opt not to get one. We just have too many members who either don t have a computer or had rather not use one to do away with the hardcopy. I have high hopes that the National office will support us in this change. As you will see throughout the rest of the bulletin we have a lot of activities going on. If you have thoughts for changes to any of these events or you want to try some new activity please let me or any of the event coordinators know. If enough members want it, we will do everything we can to make it happen. Now LET S GO PLAY GOLF AND HAVE FUN. ~Lee Banister General Membership Meeting Minutes - July 26, 2011 The meeting was called to order by Lee Bannister, President, at 6:00 p.m., July 26, Membership: Carol Sexton introduced the nine new members and guests who were in attendance. Meeting Adjourned by Lee Bannister at 6:30 p.m. ~Respectfully submitted by Marilyn Wright, Secretary. Happy Hour A typical Florida afternoon downpour didn't keep everyone away from our Happy Hour at "The Pub". This first time venue allowed us to meet other singles from another club as well as good food, drinks, and live music provided by Amy Reece. Another fun day in The Villages for all attendees. Our August Happy Hour will return to The Pub for 5:30 pm August 17. Hope to see you there! ~Happy Hour Coordinator, Barbara Bonney Sunshine Person Eileen Batchelor is our Sunshine Person. Please contact her to advise her when you know of a member with serious health problems, entering the hospital or of a person passing, sunfun101@ embarqmail.com or Meet & Greet Membership Activities I hope you all have taken the time to read the Welcome Brochure that was put together by some of our board members. Keep this brochure nearby and check it every so often. It should help you better understand the workings of our chapter events. Do you realize just how unique our chapter is? We play golf approximately 14 to 16 times a month, 12months of the year and we have 30 to 60+ players at each event. At our last meeting we had 4 guests and we are now a chapter of 213 members. Please welcome our newest members: Steve Eynard, John Hall, Roger Johnson, Jan Morison, Fordyce Searles and Dottie Kilmer when you meet them on the golf course. Just remember, Life is Good! Golf with a SMILE! ~Carol Ann Sexton, Membership Chairperson Upcoming Golf Events Just a reminder that we are always looking for significant events to publish in our monthly newsletter. These maybe anything from a hole in one, eagle, friendly meeting with an alligator, or anything you feel should be recognized for club consumption. This is your club and we would like everyone to become more familiar with all club members so take the time to drop any of the officers a note on anything significant you feel should be put into the monthly newsletter. I must stress once again that once you have signed up through a web site to play in a particular outing you should not cancel your name from a reservation being sub-

3 mitted or if a tee time has been assigned by the tee time system DO NOT CANCEL YOURSELF FROM THAT RESERVA- TION. Many times there are people who wish to play and were not able to register in time. Rather than losing the tee time give the outing coordinator a call/ and let them know you cannot play. They will try to replace and, if not able to, they will pull your name from the reservation. Please help us help everyone have a great time golfing with other club members DOUBLES TEAM SCRAMBLE May thru August Results are in for the June scramble played at Oakleigh are in and it appears there was a tie for low total with 3 under par. Prize money will be shared equally amongst Terry Gallagher, Diana Carter, Arne Rotne, Toni Millar, Gene Ricca, Phyllis Kaplan, Ed Manson, and Midge Maddison. Congratulations to the winners and good luck to everyone in their matches for the months of July and August. As a reminder we will start a new four month competition in September and sign up web site has been published in an to all club members. Come and join in the fun. Just a reminder, that those playing each month should turn in your results via to Bob Miotke at rmiotke04@comcast.net and hold onto your score cards until the winners have been announced for the month. Card verification maybe necessary and you will be contacted as needed. IMPORTANT!!!! I am looking for someone to handle this event going forward. Since the next 4 months events are already set up and are already being played there will be little to do except learn what needs to be done to get the last 4 months segment set up in a couple of months. If you are interested please contact me at my address shown above. NINE AND DINE All outings through the summer for Nine and Dine will be on Tuesday s at the Hacienda Hills Course and will start somewhere between 3:15 and 4:00 pm. You will register and pay at the pro shop. You will form your own foursomes and play whatever format you desire on the outing. We will finish and eat and drink at the Hacienda Restaurant or Gators Dockside. You will be signing up on a published web site which will take entries until Monday noon. IMPORTANT: Jack Parker has taken over the running of the Nine and Dine effective immediately. Jack can be reached at jacpar4105@aol.com. While Jack is assuming duties from Molly. I would like to take this time to thank Molly for all her efforts over the last two years and look forward to having her now become just another golfer! Thanks, Molly. Jack and I will be working to see if we can get Nine and Dine over the fall/winter months and will let you know once we have gotten something concrete to announce. PRIORITY GOLF Since we have added a number of new club members we might point out that this is a group of golfers who are The Village Priority Members. If you wish to join you may contact either Bill Breadon or Barb Richardson for more information. While all outings have been 18 holes on each Thursday of the month, with the warmer weather Bill will try to schedule 9 and 18 hole groups based on whether the heat might be a little too much for 18 holes. The group is also looking for those who would be willing to step in at the last minute as a sub, contact either Bill or Barb (listed below) as you will be held in a sub list in the event someone is unable to play or another person is needed. For more information contact either Bill Breadon wbreadon@gmail.com or Barb Richardson babsonfive@comcast.net. In light of recent events in Orlando the following probably is well timed! When you go into court you are putting yourself in the hands of 12 people who were not smart enough to get out of jury duty!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember during this hot time of the year to make sure you are well hydrated prior to as well as continue to drink while on the course. And to wait for the alcoholic drinks following the last whole of golf since the alcohol accelerates dehydration. Remember; keep it in the short grass!! ~Bob Miotke, Golf Committee Chair Week End Outing: Orange County National We are now almost ready to go to Orange County National for a great visit, 2 rounds of golf and a delicious dinner. We are 18 strong with (as of this writing) 2 spaces available so call me at right away if you want to join us on August 21st. 6 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2011 Return to the Meadowview Resort Event Date: Thursday, Sept. 1-Sunday, Sept. 4 It s been several years since we held our Labor Day weekend event in Kingsport, TN. Kingsport is geographically located in a part of our country where many members can drive-in from all directions. As a consequence, we re looking for a good-sized crowd of over people. With gas prices the cheapest they ve been in several months, it s time to get with a friend or two and load-up the van. The Marriott Meadowview works perfectly for our group. We ll play Graysburg Hills GC and Crockett s Ridge GC. The standard package price is $379 and includes three nights stay (you ll have a roommate), two rounds of golf, welcoming cocktail party, cookout at Graysburg Hills after the round, two full buffet (hot) breakfasts and a final night dinner at the Marriott. We ll also have a deejay for the first and final nights. If you want to play some additional golf, you can sign-up for day-of-arrival (11am, Sept. 1) golf at the Cattails course at the resort, or the same course for day-of-departure (9am, Sept. 4) for only $30. It s a great rate, however, we ve been told the greens will have been aerated about a week earlier. You re welcome to stay additional nights, so see the registration form for details. In addition, we ll have our 50/50 raffle on our final night and you can pre-pay for those on the registration form as well. Full details of the event are at SinglesGolf.com/LaborDay and if you d like to check out the hotel, go to SinglesGolf.com/ Meadowview. Meet More Singles at Multi-Chapter Events ASGA, through its member chapters, offer other events which allow you to meet singles from other chapters. All members are invited and encouraged to attend these Multi-Chapter Events. There s nothing like meeting up with a bunch of other singles for a weekend of golf. Each package is basically the same but there are differences, so we suggest you visit the website for the event. And, if you re chapter s interested in hosting one of these events, prepared to put a lot of work into it. But the reward of having singles play in your city and play your favorite courses is a life experience, well, hopefully! Contact ASGA to clear the date and then get your Board of Directors to give local approval. Then, start putting it together! The website for all events is really, really simple: Here are our multi-chapter events for the rest of the year: Jacksonville's World Golf Village Weekend - August 26-28, SinglesGolf.com/WorldGolfWeekend has all the details you ll need. Labor Day Weekend Event September 1-4, Kingsport, TN. Deets at SinglesGolf.com/LaborDay Sacramento ASGA's High Sierra Weekend in Reno, NV - September Go to SinglesGolf.com/HighSierra The Battle at Hilton Head - November 11-13, Details to be announced soon. New Year's Weekend Event 2011/ December 29, 2011-January 1, Location TBA. Golf Cruise - Details at ASGA in Ireland - Summer, Details at Elections for New Chapter Leaders Start Soon! It s been said that the greatest thing about being a chapter president is that some day, you get to be a past president. I can vouch for that myself having served as a chapter president years ago. Chapters should never become stagnant, that s why our bylaws require a change in leadership once each year. New minds, new ideas. We elect our chapter presidents for 2012 at the October meetings and the committee chairs in November. All new officers take their position effective January 1, leaving ample opportunity do make plans for the upcoming year. What s involved in being a chapter president? Check out the site SinglesGolf.com/leaders for some perspective on what each position entails, along with some great ideas. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone or GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com P. S. It s painful turning 60 this month. My only good feeling about it is that a lot of you beat me to the punch!
